A/N: I really hope you guys enjoy this chapter! AdmiralKirk! Thank you for helping me. I appreciate it!
Damien was strapping up his rollerblades on and checked to make sure they were secure on his feet. It was a warm April Friday. School was out for Spring Break and he wanted to have some fun in the park. He told Sly and the crew about his plans earlier; they gave him permission to be at the park, so long as he stayed out of trouble. Still, they knew the little meerkat was well-behaved, so they weren't worried. Murray was going to pick him up in about two hours so he was going to make the most of his time.
Damien skated down a path for a little bit, just to loosen up because he wanted to be ready to teach his pupil how to rollerblade. He was disappointed that Basil couldn't come but it was okay because he was now going to be alone with Femi and plus that meant no teasing from the lemur.
He skated backwards with ease, it was so much better than ice skating. He had much more control skating on the ground than slippery ice. Damien turned on his walkman and did his thing. He was gliding further down the pavement and even jumped over a box that was for some reason in the middle of the path.
After warming up, Damien sat on a bench nearby and waited until he saw a car pull up and Femi and her mother stepped out. He got up skated over to the mother and daughter.
"Femi!" the boy meerkat shouted in glee.
"Damien!" She waved.
The boy gave her a hug and then greeted her mother.
"Hello Mrs. Kanu. It's nice to see you again, ma'am." He shook her hand.
"It's nice to see you too Damien. Femi has told me and her father a lot about you."
The meerkat giggled nervously.
"Oh mummy!"
"I'm sorry dear. I didn't mean to embarrass you. Where's your father my child?" She asked.
"Oh he had some errands to do. He knows I'm here. My Uncle is gonna pick me up."
"Oh ok, dear. I'll be back soon. I'm sure Femi will be good at rollerblading as she is ice skating." The adult meerkat smiled.
"Me too, ma'am! Goodbye!"
The two waved at Mrs. Kanu as she hopped back in the car and drove off.
Damien turned to her and smiled.
"Ok, get your skates on because our lesson starts right now."
Femi lost her balanced fell forward. Luckily, she didn't get hurt. Damien pulled her up to her as he tried to steady her.
"Wow, this is pretty hard. It's definitely not like ice skating." She admitted.
"Don't worry Femi. I got ya, girl."
She smiled.
"I like the way you talk Damey. It sounds a little funny sometimes but I like it."
His face turned every shade of red anyone could think of. He cleared his throat.
"Umm…t-tthanks…Let's try again."
She nodded and then continued their lesson.
He showed her how to glide a little and then how to brake. Although there was more than one way to do it, he didn't want to confuse her. So, he showed her the brake on one of her boots in the back and told her to extend the one with the brake while the other was a little behind. Then bend her knees and prop her toe up to stop.
After a several attempts, she got the hang of it, but like Damien was with ice skating, she still had a lot to learn.
"This is so much fun!" She said.
Damien took her hands into his and started skating backwards, pulling her with him.
"Be careful Damey. I don't want you to get hurt."
"I'll be ok, trust me."
He pulled her even further along and then the two of them twirled around, still holding each others' hands. Femi got a little dizzy and almost lost her balance. He caught her in time.
"Sorry." The boy meerkat apologized as he held her.
She just smiled. Damien couldn't stop staring into her hazel eyes.
"It's fine. I like going in circles."
"You want to take a break?"
"Yeah, I am a bit tired."
He led them to the bench close by and sat her down.
He took his walkman out of his back pocket before he too sat beside her.
"What kind of music do you have on there?" She pointed at the device.
"Ever heard of Immature?"
She shook her head.
He put the headphones on her and turned the walkman on.
"…I wanna know u that way, that way
I wanna know u that way, that way
I wanna know u that way, that way
I wanna know u that way…"
She was bopping her heard in tune with the lyrics and instrumental.
"I like this song! You have good taste in music."
Damien let Femi listen to a few more songs until her mother's car pulled up from afar and signaled for Femi to come.
"Well, I have to go. Thanks for teaching me how to rollerblade and letting me listen to your walkman." She thanked him as they both took off their blades and put their shoes back on.
"You're welcome. We have to do this again."
"Maybe Basil can join us."
"Or maybe not."
The two of them giggled.
"Bye Damey."
Just as she was about to walk away, He realized something and quickly caught up with her.
"Hey Femi."
She turned to face him with a shimmering smile.
He took out his Immature tape and put it in her hands.
"I want you to have this."
Her face lit up in surprise.
"Are you sure?"
The boy meerkat nodded.
She grinned and gave him a peck on the cheek.
"Thank you. I hope you have a good Spring Break. Bye." Femi waved.
Damien waved and kept doing so even after she left. He couldn't believe what just happened. She kissed him. He touched his cheek and blushed uncontrollably. It was such a strange sensation. He never thought something like that would happen.
He stood there and daydreamed until he heard the sound of horn honking several time and someone calling his name. He thought it was Femi but reality slapped him hard in the face when the voice turned out to be Murray who was in the van.
"Hey Damey! Hurry up kid!"
The meerkat blinked out his trance. He didn't know how long he stood there looking stupid. Yet, he snatched his bag and blades and ran to the van. They drove off.
"Hey Damey are you okay buddy? I was just about to go and haul you over my shoulder and toss you in here." The hippo joked.
"Uhh…yeah. I'm ok. Sorry about that." He felt so dumb staring off into space.
"It's ok. You had fun with your little friend?"
Damien smiled when he thought about Femi and the kissed.
"Yeah, it was cool." He wanted to change the subject so he asked. "When are we going to Panama?"
"We're leaving on Sunday. We still have a few errands to do and have to gather more information on that crook Bino Blue so we can stop him."
"Sho you right!"
"Yep. Other than that, we're gonna have some fun little man! The beaches, the food, the parties, the food, the clubs, and well the food." Murray laughed out loud.
Damien was excited. His adopted family was going to stop a big bad criminal and go on vacation. The anticipation was killing the little boy. Other than France, this was going to be the first time going anywhere outside his home country, the U.S. Could his life get any better than that? He didn't know but he wasn't going to over think it.
He looked out the window and saw the reddish-yellow sun was descending as the clouds darkened and filled the sky.
Spring Break was going to be a wild ride for everyone.
The Cooper Gang was outside the Panamanian airport. It was Sunday April 20th, 1997 at 11:13 A.M. and the skies were clear and the sun was neon yellow, which was scorching hot and burning their bodies.
"Woo, it's hot out here!" Sly commented as he fanned himself.
"Very true." Murray agreed and swiped the sweat off with a wet towel.
"Don't pass out you two." Bentley jested.
"Trust me I won't."
"I can't wait until we get to the beach and swim in the water." Damien was hopping in circles. He barely slept the night before due to excitement. He already had everything planned out to do.
"Hey little Dame, slow your roll. We have to get to the hotel first. Don't you want to see where we're staying at?"
"Oh yeah! Silly me, we gotta do that!"
The gang arrived at the hotel after being dropped off by the taxi cab. With their stuff in hand, they headed to their hotel room.
"Here's our place you guys!" Murray belted and unlocked the door.
The lock clicked and the hippo opened the door.
The room was very decorative. It was a calm blue and ocean green hue. There were two beds with white and light blue sheets, a navy blue couch and lounge chair, a TV, mini refrigerator, microwave and a marbled bathroom.
Damien's eyes widened and zoomed pass the three adults and pounced on one of the beds.
"This bed is soft and I can jump real high! I can almost reach the ceiling!" Damien was bouncing on the bed and then bounced from one bed to the other.
"This is nice Murray." Bentley wheeled inside and turned the TV on.
"Good choice pal!" Sly plopped down on the sofa. "It feels so good in here."
"No problem."
"Sly catch me! I'm gonna jump." As soon as the meerkat sprang off the bed, Sly expertly got up and grabbed him in a nick of time. The little boy couldn't stop laughing. The Raccoon loved seeing the child so content.
The meerkat wiggled out of his grasp and headed towards the window. It was a lovely view from their room; the gang was about six levels up, so they were pretty high. The tropical trees were everywhere and the sidewalk was crowded with laid back people, not having a care in the world. It was paradise.
"So when we gonna go to the beach Sly?" He focused his attention to the Raccoon.
"Damey, we have plenty of time to have fun. Me and the guys have to rest, grab lunch, and then to the beach we go. How's that sound?"
The meerkat thought it over and smirked.
"Ok, that's fair. I'll go watch TV with Bentley until y'all are ready to go." He sat on the floor and watched The Goonies.
Murray was already asleep and snoring. Sly didn't even notice that until just now.
Sly lied down to take a little nap. He wanted to be well rested because the gang was going to be out for the rest of the day.
Sly and the gang had splendid lunch. Panama had some great cafés. They all went to a little spot and had a glorious meal. It consisted of pan-fried plantains, yucca fritas, arroz con pollo, and carimañolas. For dessert they all had arroz con leche.
Damien loved arroz con leche and had been a long time since he had a taste of it.
"My daddy used to make this for me when I was littler."
"I used to eat this too as a kid when the gang and I went to the bodega." Sly said.
After lunch, they walked around the local area. The streets were festive, with people going in and out of stores and markets, the vendors getting someone's attention to get a snack or two, cars cruising down the road.
The setting could have taken place anywhere in the world but it just happened to be in beautiful Panama.
The natives were very friendly and were eager to help tourists to get where they were going. The Cooper Gang even stopped and conversed with the locals, some in which were bilingual (Spanish and English). They learned that some of their origins were from Jamaica, Trinidad, and other Caribbean islands. Many of their families came to Panama during the construction of the Panama Canal.
"You should check the canal out. It's one of the highlights of our country." The local female giant anteater said.
"We will, we're gonna be here for a while!" Murray said.
"Hey, can you tell us where the nearest beach is?" Sly asked kindly.
"Just go down all the way to that clothing store and the make a left and the beach is right there." The anteater's ocelot friend instructed.
"Thanks!" Sly said and the gang went about their business.
Sly and Damien were playing in the water, tossing a beach ball back and forth. They swam for a little while, even surfing although neither of them was good at it. The child proved to be a good swimmer, better than Sly at least.
Damien was enjoying the cool, green-blue water and the feeling of grainy tan sand under his feet. He had been to the beach before but only as a toddler.
"Catch it Damey!" Sly wailed and passed the multi-colored ball to him.
The kid caught it and threw it back as he stomped his feet against the water and sand.
Meanwhile, Murray was lying on the towel with his sunglasses on, smearing sunscreen all over his body whereas Bentley sipped a Pina Colada and read a book. They were under a large umbrella.
"Man this is the life!" Murray yawned. "I kind of wished we lived here."
"It's very pretty but I don't think I can stand the heat enough to live here." Bentley chuckled.
"Yeah and to think that it's only spring, just imagine how summer would be."
"I rather not Murray."
Sly and Damien approached the two, with their fur soaked. Both of them shook themselves off, with saltwater drops landing on the hippo and turtle.
"Whoa!" Murray jumped up.
"Hey!" Bentley yelled annoyance. "I don't want to get wet. Use a towel to dry yourselves.
The meerkat and Raccoon laughed.
"Sorry you guys." Sly apologized amusingly.
"Yeah sorry." Damien wrung out his dreads with a towel.
"You mammals and your fur." The turtle remarked.
"Hey Bentley, some of us mammals don't have fur." The hippo countered, mostly referring to himself.
"You're right but still…"
Sly and Damien finished drying themselves and asked his friends if they wanted ice cream.
"I'll take two scoops of Rocky Road!" Murray said.
"I want strawberry." Bentley said.
"No problem." The Raccoon said. "Me and Damey are getting our favorite, mint chocolate chip. Be right back." The two of them headed to the food stand.
Murray put some more sunscreen on his arms. He noticed two women, a leopard and koala, strolled by, clad in two piece swimsuits.
"Hola!" They said, eying at the hippo and turtle.
"Hi." Bentley mumbled, too occupied with his book.
"Hello!" Murray waved and as they walked away, he lowered his sunglasses to get a better view of their backside.
"Damn Bentley, you didn't even so much as look at them."
"Because there's more to women than their bodies?"
"Don't try. I don't mind a good-looking woman, but that's not the first thing that comes to mind."
The turtle put his book down and gave his friend his undivided attention.
"Well, what exactly do you look for in a woman, Murray?"
The hippo sat up and smiled.
"I like a woman who can cook, likes racing, has a mind of her own, and likes having deep conversations."
Bentley giggled.
"Deep conversations? I didn't think you were into that."
"Yes, I am. I mean, who wants to be with someone who's dumb and closed-minded?" Murray looked over at the food stand and saw that Damien and Sly were still in line.
"Obviously not me!" Bentley interjected.
"Now it's your turn. What do you look for in a woman?"
"You see…I look for someone that likes video games, science, computes, but most of all, someone who is kind and can accept me for whom I am and not feel sorry for me …" He paused afterwards looking away.
While he has come to terms with his condition, Bentley at times couldn't help but feel a little self-conscious about being paralyzed. He sometimes saw how people, except his friends, looked at him with pity, like there was something wrong with him being in a wheelchair. He hated that very much. He wasn't ashamed of being in a wheelchair. There was nothing that could be done. He wanted to be seen as Bentley, not Bentley the cripple who people should look down upon.
Silence fell between the two friends. Murray knew what his friend meant. He got up and gave him a firm hug.
After he let go, they smiled at one another and Murray finally spoken.
"Bentley, you'll find someone who loves and care for you. You're a good person, remember that."
Just then, Sly and Damien came back to the spot with the frozen treats.
"Who wants ice cream?" Sly asked.
Later in the afternoon, the Cooper Gang was building a sandcastle together. Sly built a moat around their castle. Murray stabilized the four corners. Bentley smoothed the crooked areas while Damien collected water to mix with the sand.
"Man, this is gonna look so good!" Damien shouted as he came back from fetching water and helped Bentley.
"It definitely will Damien." Bentley said. "It's already getting bigger."
"We gonna make it real big right Bentley?" He asked the turtle.
"Sure, of course we can."
"Just as long as the tides don't destroy it." Murray added.
"Then we'll just make a bigger moat." Sly simply said as he got to work digging the ditch deeper.
Everyone continued their tasks in completing the castle. It took them nearly thirty minutes to finish but it was worth it. Sly took several picture of it. The sandcastle was about 4ft wide and nearly as tall as Damien.
"We all did a good job you guys." Sly noted.
Everyone nodded in agreement. They let it stick around until the meerkat had other ideas.
"You know what I wanna do with it now Sly?"
"What Damey?"
"I'm gonna be the monster that destroys it!"
"Me too!" Murray said eagerly.
The little meerkat and the hippo destroyed the castle within minutes, knocking and clawing the towers down. Then they kicked and stomped it down to the ground. There was literally nothing left Sly and Bentley laughed nonstop at the two of them.
"Roar!" Said the child. "I'm a monster, you better watch out!"
"Uh oh." Sly pretended to be scared and took off. Damien was going after him.
"Hey, I wanna chase Sly too!" Murray followed.
Bentley shook his head at the wild goose chase. He went back to reading his book.
Sly and Damien swam some more as the sun started to set. The meerkat went underwater, without Sly noticing and reached for the Raccoon's feet. He grabbed his toe, startling Sly who nearly kicked the kid in the face. He heard him screaming for whatever to get off of him.
Damien went up to the surface and fell into a giggling spell.
"Damien? Was that you?" Sly was a little nervous. Swimming was still relatively new to him.
"Yeah that was me! I was trying to scare you and I did!"
"Oh yeah, I'll get you back for that!" Sly splashed the kid.
"Hey!" Damien shouted as he returned the gesture.
The two of them kept splashing each other with water. Becoming overpowered, the meerkat tried to swim away quickly however, Sly managed to grabbed him by the leg and got a hold of him and began to tickle him.
"Stop Sly stop!" He couldn't stop giggling, the more the Raccoon tickled him, the more water he started to kick up.
"You give up?" Sly asked.
"HAHA…HAHA….N-no!" The kid refused even though he was in a tight situation.
Sly lifted him up even higher and threw in the water. He shot up to the surface and spat the salted water out.
"Man, do that again! Throw me in the water!" Damien urged.
"Ok little Dame!"
Sly repeatedly tossed him in the water until the sun was no longer in sight.
"Ok, I think it's time to go." Sly announced as he and the child emerged from the water and joined the rest of their friends to pack up.
"Man that was fun! I can't wait to come back here again."
"We'll come back Damey, we're gonna be here for a while. We're going to fish, go on a boat through the canal, the mall, and some museums. We have plenty to do." Murray assured.
"Hey, don't forget, you gotta get that bad guy Bino Blue." The meerkat put his towel over his shoulders.
"Of course." Sly chuckled as he patted the boy's head.
"I had enough beach fun for one day." Bentley stated. "I can't wait to go back to the hotel and cool off."
Everyone agreed.
The Cooper Gang was in their hotel room, after taking a cab back. Murray, Bentley, and Damien already took their baths and were settling down. Sly was now in the shower, bathing himself. Everyone else was doing their own thing.
Bentley was on his laptop waiting for more information on Bino Blue from an associate of his on Thiefnet. Murray was on the phone with room service, ordering only god knows what. Damien was on the floor watching music videos.
"I bomb atomically, Socrates' philosophies
and hypothesis can't define how I be droppin these
mockeries, lyrically perform armed robbery
Flee with the lottery, possibly they spotted me
Battle-scarred shogun, explosion when my pen hits
tremendous, ultra-violet shine blind forensics
I inspect you, through the future see millenium
Killa B's sold fifty gold sixty platinum…"
"I like the Wu-Tang Clan, especially Method Man and Reakwon! M-E-T-H-O-D MAN!" Damien pounded his little fists on the floor following the beat.
Just then, Sly walked out the bathroom as the steam from the shower was released into the room. He had on a blue FUBU t-shirt and basketball shorts.
"I feel so refreshed!" He patted his head down with his towel.
"Ahh, glad you're finally done in there Miss Beauty Queen." Bentley joked, making Murray and Damien laugh out loud.
Sly rolled his eyes and smirked.
"I wasn't even in there that long, smart one."
"Anyway, I got some more information on Bino Blue."
Sly walked over to Bentley.
"What's up?"
"Bino, as you already know, is a big-time drug dealer and an illegal arms supplier. He's not the kind of guy you want to be alone with. However, what I found out from an acquaintance of mine is that he was really big in the drug cartel in Miami in the 80s. He later left the States and resided in various places in the Carribbean and Central America, before he stayed in Panama. He's wanted in several countries."
"What else?"
"Well. He also told me that Bino is located deep in the wilderness, somewhere in Colón."
"Colón? That's not too far from where we are. But, what's the exact location?"
"My acquaintance is currently working on that as we speak. Hopefully, we'll know by tomorrow or Tuesday."
Sly let out a booming yawn.
"Fair enough, we'll just take it easy for now."
Someone knocked on the door and called out.
"This is room service."
The hippo hopped out of bed and ran to the door, letting the serviceman in who rolled out a long cart of food.
"Uhh, you ordered fried pickles, a large supreme pizza, three two-liter sodas, BBQ chicken and Ribs with a side of vanilla ice cream, eight chilidogs, five beef patties, a 12 inch sub sandwich, two key lime pies, and a small salad?"
Murray's mouth was watering in hunger.
"Yep, that's me!" He gave the serviceman a $30 tip.
"Gracias sir." Then he left the room.
Everyone just stood there staring at the hippo.
"What?"
"Murray, that's a lot of food you ordered." Sly said.
"Yeah, because there are four of us here."
"I don't even eat that much." Bentley said.
"Then if y'all don't finish it, there's more for me." He grabbed a drumstick and devoured it within two bites.
"Hey! I'm hungry too, let me have some." Damien begged.
"Help yourself to anything you want Damey."
The meerkat reached for a slice of pizza and a chilidog and took a bite out of each one.
The turtle and Raccoon just shook their head, trying not to laugh.
"You're going to eat?" Bentley queried.
Sly just shrugged.
"Why not?"
They went over to join them in the crazy junk food feast.
Hidden within the wild Panamanian jungle was an enormous building, being guarded by hi-tech security equipment and henchmen in every corner. Hardly anyone knew about this place other than associates and customers and every now and then a victim who was dragged and tortured here. Bino Blue, who was a ruthless jaguar, wasn't going to take chances, he didn't need snitches. He needed privacy and protection from potential danger.
Bino was in his board room, sitting in his big comfy chair as he strummed his fingers on the smooth oak table. The jaguar was impatiently waiting for his colleagues to get here because he was ready to get the meeting started.
The double doors separated and in came a crocodile, fox, and armadillo, in that order, and sat in their respective places at the table.
Bino took out his cigar from a box beside him, lit it with his lighter, and inhaled it for a good minute. He blew out a large stream of smoke and spoke.
"I called you all in here for an important reason."
No one said anything. The jaguar got up from his chair and began circling around the three men, their nervousness churning within their stomachs as their blood ran cold.
"I worked very hard for my business affairs to pay off. I started off as a chump changed shorty with a dream and now I have control of the drugs and arms here in Panama and who knows? I might end up taking control of this country soon."
The Jaguar laughed, so did the three men, but only because they were scared.
"Now, I don't want anything to go wrong…especially after that little incident where an informant got in here and nearly fucked us over last week, right Piri?" Bino snared at the armadillo as he hovered over him.
"Y-y-yeas B-B-Bino." The armadillo stuttered.
"Good!" Then out of nowhere, Bino took out his switchblade and stabbed him in hand, with the blade almost penetrating the other side.
"AHHHHH! OH DIOS!"
Bino dug the knife deeper before slowly pulling it out, making his suffering even greater.
The armadillo continued screaming in pain as blood gushed out of his wounded hand. The crocodile and fox scooted away in their chairs, cowering.
Piri the armadillo, tried to stop the bleeding but it kept running down his hand onto his clothes.
"Muthafuckas! I don't want to end up like that bastard Muggshot! Last I heard he was rotting in a jail cell in New York! Do you want everything I've ever worked for ruined!?"
"N-NNo-No sir!" The other two henchmen said in unison.
Bino leaned in and whispered in the armadillo's ear as he applied pressure around his neck with his muscular arm.
"Don't fuck up again or else."
He released his hold on him and gestured the men to leave.
"GO!"
The crocodile and fox immediately scrambled out of the room, with Piri the armadillo following as he desperately tried to stop the bleeding.
The jaguar cleaned off his switchblade with alcohol and sat back down in his chair.
Let's rewind a few hours back (because the time zones in Panama and France are different) and see what happened in France as the Cooper Gang was in Panama…
Carmelita got back to her apartment. It was 10 P.M. and mentally as well as physically worn-out from her long day at Interpol. It took whatever energy she had left to pick up her feet to go up the stairs.
She rubbed her eyes and then pushed the door to enter her bedroom. She began to remove her clothes, the sooner she got in the shower, the sooner she can pass out on her soft bed.
The vixen turned her lamp on and saw that there was a large envelope on the nightstand.
"What the hell is this?" She questioned.
Caremlita flipped it over and saw a calling card attached and knew who it belonged to.
"Ringtail." She mumbled as a smile grew on her face, thinking about him.
She opened it and looked inside.
She saw a few documents about some criminal named Bino Blue, it sounded vaguely familiar to her but she didn't have much of a clue who this man was. Then she found another envelope, which was smaller, and revealed a plane ticket to Panama.
Her eyes nearly popped out their sockets when she put two and two together.
"That damn Ringtail…" She whispered in amusement.
