Episode 21: Stand By You

In Starling City, Anna and Oliver's Apartment...

"Shit," Anna hissed, leaning into the bathroom counter on her palms. She'd had to take a show as an excuse to keep Drake out of the room for a while, but nothing could keep her recent discovery from her mind. A baby? Really? Right now? These things always seem to happen when you really don't want them to. Anna was inwardly—and semi-outwardly—freaking out. But she recognized that she couldn't exactly do anything to stop this. If she was right, she was much farther along than desirable.

And if she told Oliver, which would be the right thing to do, an abortion would be out of the question entirely. She didn't know if Oliver would be excited or annoyed at this new change. The thought worried her, almost sickening to her stomach. Just face the facts, Anna thought. You're pregnant. Get over it. She finished drying her hair and brushed it out, then unlocked the bathroom to head into the bedroom. She startled upon seeing Oliver sitting on the edge of the bed facing the bathroom, waiting for her.

"Hey. I didn't think you'd been back so soon," Anna said, trying to act as natural as possible. "Is everything okay?" When Oliver didn't respond at first, just looked down, her eyes followed his line of sight. He held the empty pregnancy test kit box in his hands. He stared at it blankly, and then looked up at Anna. "Anna, is there something we need to talk about?" he asked, a certain angst to his tone.

Anna swallowed. "Where'd you get that?"

"Felicity." She sighed. Felicity really couldn't keep a secret, could she? The answer was no. And now Anna would have to explain this to Oliver when she was completely unprepared. Oliver looked at Anna with an expectant and anxious, yet calm expression. Anna walked over and sat on the edge of the bed to his left. She tried to think of how to start. But subtlety was never her strong suit. "I'm pregnant," she blurted.

"You're sure?" Oliver asked, holding his breath. She nodded and he took a deep breath. Part of him was so excited. But the lot of him was nerve wracked. Oliver, a father? On the other hand, there wasn't anyone else in the world he'd want to have a child with besides Anna. She watched him, waiting for an outward reaction. A smile broke across Oliver's face and a small chuckle escaped him. "A baby," he shook his head in disbelief.

"Are you mad?" she asked, too nervous not to ask. He turned toward her, practically bubbling with joy, and shook his head. "No, no...I'm happy," he said, almost not believing that either. "Are you mad?" Anna had to think about that a second. Was she mad? No. Incredibly concerned? Yes. But she shook her head, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "We're gonna be parents," she said, also in a state of disbelief.

"We're gonna be parents," he echoed. They stared at each other a second, then bubbly chuckles slipped out of them. The gnawing anxiousness in Anna's chest instantly dissipated. Knowing he was okay with the change was a lot easier than doubting. Oliver wrapped his arms around her and she held onto him, closing her eyes.

In Central City...

Eddie sighed frustratedly. "Really?" he asked the car. "We're out of gas." Krysten glanced around at the road they were on.

It was beside the ascended highway, on a one way stretch. Eddie sighed and exited the car. "Wha- no! Have you not seen the movies?" Krysten asked. He gave her a look. "I'll be fine. I'm a detective with a gun. We're safe," he said, before shutting his door. Krysten huffed and got out as well. "I think we passed a gas station on the way here," she said, walking around the back of the car. She stood next to Eddie and zipped up her jacket. Crude laughter and feet scrapping on pavement caught her attention.

She looked left and saw two gangster looking guys, both dressed badly, and one held a bottle of something. "I guess we'll have to walk," Eddie said, oblivious to what Krysten was seeing. Keeping her eye on the guys as they approached, Krysten started to hit Eddie's arm until he paid attention to her. "Will you stop that? What?" he asked, turning to her. His eyes widened a little and he suddenly became alert. "Get in the car," he said.

"What?" she asked.

"Get. In. the. Car. Now," he said, trying to look like he wasn't talking. Krysten inched her way around the car as Eddie said, "Lock the doors." She nodded and slid into the passenger seat. She pressed down hard on the lock button and the car clicked. She twisted in her seat to see what was going on. Eddie walked to the back of the car as the guys came closer. They said things she couldn't hear, and then one swung at Eddie. Eddie didn't react in time and fell to the floor from the hit.

Krysten gasped and pushed open the door. "Eddie!" She rushed out and then stopped herself from getting too close. "Well, lookie here," one said. "He's got a girl with him. This could be fun after all." The other guy nodded in agreeance. Krysten's hand began to trembling and at the last second, she turned and darted away. She got several yards. But they caught up to her. "Where do you think you're going?" one of them grabbed her, stopping her, and she gasped in fear.

He put his arms around her and dragged her back to the car, Krysten thrashing against him the whole way. To no avail. Eddie groaned on the pavement, looking up. He saw that they had Krysten and panicked. "Let her go!" he said, trying to get up. The other guy came over and slammed his foot into Eddie's side, saying, "Not before we have our fun."

"What you think, princess?" the first one asked Krysten, tightening his hold on her. "Should we do it right here, or would you prefer-" Before he could finish, a red flash and a gust of wind caused Krysten to close her eyes as the guy holding her flew backwards. The other guy, still standing, freaked. "What the hell?" He reached down and grabbed Eddie's gun, then aimed it at Krysten. Before she could react, or even know what was going on, a bullet pierced Krysten's right side, in her abdomen. She cried out as it did, clutching the wound.

The red flash came back, knocking the last guy to the ground. Krysten tried to focus through the pain. She saw that a man was the red flash. Clad in red from head to toe, a mask covering his face. He knelt to check on Eddie and Krysten fell into the side of the car, unable to keep herself upright as the blood drained from her body. The man in red, Barry, heard the thumping noise her action made and looked up. He saw her and his eyes widened. She'd been shot.

He quickly stood and went to her. "Oh my god," she said, looking down at the blood. "I was shot?" She could hardly focus and she was light-headed from the sudden blood loss. She slid sideways and fell, but Barry caught her and picked her up bridal style. Her head lulled onto his shoulder and he glanced at Eddie. "Guys, I'm coming back with a girl, she's been shot," Barry said, into his mic.

In Starling City, Anna and Oliver's Apartment...

Oliver's plans to stop by, see how Anna was doing, and head back to Queen Consolidated were erased. There was no way he could go back to work today—not with what he'd just discovered. Now, Anna's head lay on his chest while he stroked back her hair softly. The small TV was on but neither of them was really paying attention to it. "Think it'll look like me?" Anna asked, absentmindedly.

"I don't know," Oliver answered, deep in thought. "I think I would rather it looked like you than me."

"I wouldn't mind if it looked like it's father," she smiled lightly.

"You say that now," he said, semi-sarcastic, and Anna chuckled. She propped herself up to better see him. "Well, what are you gonna do about it? So the baby looks like you. You can't change it now," she said.

"I guess we'll just have to have another," he said.

She laughed. "And, what, keep trying until we get one that looks like me?"

"Sounds reasonable, doesn't it?" he chuckled.

"Who says I want more kids?" Inwardly, Anna felt a pang of sadness mixed with anxiety. She was happy, yet so many worries spun around in her head. Oliver noticed her slight drop in tone, and he slid his hand onto her cheek, forcing her to look at him. "What's going on? What are you thinking?" he asked.

She sighed, pausing. "What if...what if I'm not a good mom? I had a really shitty mother growing up and, if this baby has to suffer through even a day of what I went through, how is this worth it?"

"You're not going to be your mother," he said, surely.

"How do you know that?" she questioned, a bit defensive.

"Because I know you, Anna. You are the bravest, kindest, most beautiful person I know," he said, smiling a little as he spoke. Anna was skeptical of his words, but listened quietly. "And it's because you've gone through a terrible childhood with a bad mother that you...will be exactly what this baby needs. Okay?" She nodded, fighting tears at his words, and he pressed his lips to hers in a gentle kiss.

Anna laid back down beside him, flesh against his side, and rested her head on his chest. "Whatever comes next after this, we'll figure it out. Together," he said.

"Together," she agreed.
