Chapter 26
Later that evening after dinner Kurt and Blaine decided to find Trent again. He hadn't shown up to dinner so Kurt insisted on bringing a sandwich.
When they arrived to Trent and his roommate William's dorm they went in without knocking, knowing better than that. They had become impatient.
When they entered, though, they only found William sitting at a desk with a book in his hands, looking up at them bewildered, when the door opened. When he saw Kurt stand in the doorway with Blaine behind him, he sighed and gave them an exasperated look.
"Look, guys," he started, "I know that you wanna kick Trent's ass, and honestly I have no idea if he deserves it, because I have no freaking idea what's going on, but I'm under the impression that Trent's scared of you. He told me to tell you off whenever you would ask about him. Give him a break, dudes, he really is a good guy, he's just-"
"Will, shut up, we know," Blaine said, cutting him off. "And we don't want to hurt Trent, okay? We just want to talk-"
"Code for beating, Blain-"
"No, we seriously just want to talk," Kurt cut in. "We think that he has been manipulated into doing something he didn't want to. We want to help him."
"So we need to know where he is," Blaine said impatiently and Kurt gave him a stern look.
"Look, how do I know you're not just playing me and are going to beat him up when I tell you?" William said.
"We brought a sandwich?" Kurt tried, holding out the wrapped bread. "Would bullies give their victims food?"
"You know, that could be used as bait or something, you know he hasn't eaten in forever?"
"Will-"
"We just want to talk to him," Kurt said, giving his boyfriend a heated look when he became pissed. "Do we honestly look like someone who would beat someone up?"
Will cast a hesitant look at Blaine behind Kurt. "Well… he does seem kinda angry to me, yeah?"
Blaine rolled his eyes in defeat and banged his head against the door.
"Okay. Will, right?" Kurt said pushing his boyfriend away and stepping further into the room. For a moment the boy almost looked scared up at him. His eyes were very blue, Kurt discovered, when he nodded. "Look, he is kinda mad. Trent, he did something, said something to me- it messed me up pretty bad. What he told me is his business only, so don't ask," he added when the boy opened his mouth. "So yes he's mad. When people do things to me, he tends to get pissed," Kurt said pointedly now turned to look at his boyfriend, who just stood flippantly with his arms crossed. "But trust me, I know him, he would not hurt Trent. I'm there to soothe him anyway," Kurt remarked with a slight smile. "Look, we're serious, Will, we just want to talk to him. We know he's miserable and he doesn't have to be."
A few seconds of silence. "You know he loves him, right? He talks about him in his sleep. Not- that kind, but- you know what I mean," Will said awkwardly and gestured to Blaine behind Kurt.
Kurt inhaled at the confirmation, but then nodded. "We had a suspicion. And the only reason I'm bothered by that is because he's hurting. We actually owe him an apology."
"So you're not bothered that he has feelings for your boyfriend?" he asked dubiously.
"Why would I be?" Kurt asked simply. "I'm very sorry he has to suffer, and we feel very bad we've been so obvious while he was present, but I don't see why else I should be bothered. I trust said boyfriend, Will."
Blaine had remained quiet while the two of them talked but now he came forward slowly and placed a careful hand on Kurt's shoulder. "He has good reason to," he said quietly, though his voice was still rather impolite.
For a few seconds William looked at them uncertainly, but when Blaine's features softened as Kurt stepped closer to him, he sighed and nodded.
"Fine," he said. "He's in the library, aisle four, that's his spot. But please," he said when Kurt and Blaine hurried to make a move. "He's been- bad. Don't-"
"We won't," Kurt said and took Blaine's hand. "I promise. Thank you!"
"Yeah, yeah," Will just said.
"Hey," Blaine said, just when Kurt had made a move for them to walk. "I'm sorry about that. He's just- I get defensive when he's…" he gestured to Kurt, but then shook his head. "I'm sorry. I really never meant to hurt him. If I knew how he felt sooner…" Kurt's hand squeezed his gently as he talked. "I just- he's," his gaze flickered to Kurt shortly but quickly focused on William's again. "He's the love of my life. And… I can't-"
"I know," Will nodded and for the first time his mouth twitched in a smile – a rather sad one, but one nonetheless. "I think everyone can see that. And I think that's the main reason he's upset."
Blaine swallowed at that and nodded sharply. "Thank you, Will." The boy nodded and let them leave.
When they were out in the empty hallway, Kurt stopped up for a moment throwing back his head against the hallway wall. Blaine stopped up as well and took the hand that weren't holding the sandwich in his. "I'm sorry I was such a jerk, Kurt," he said.
But Kurt just shook his head slightly. "Do you think there's anything worse than unrequited love, B? I mean… in the small perspectives? Besides war and famine and, you know, dying kids in Africa?"
With a slight frown Blaine shrugged slowly. "I don't- I… don't know?"
"Poor Trent," Kurt said quietly, looking down his hands in Blaine's now, seeing the glinting of his ring.
"I know," Blaine said and let go of his hand to stroke his cheek. "But Kurt we have to focus on how lucky we are then, don't we? Aren't that what we prefer? That instead of putting themselves in our positions and pitying us, people are just grateful?"
"I know, but," he hesitated, leaning into the touch of Blaine's thumb against his cheek. "But imagine-"
"I can't," Blaine just said and shook his head stubbornly. "I've tried. I can't."
"Me neither," Kurt whispered sounding utterly broken. "Poor, poor Trent. We've practically been shoving it in his face all along."
"But the thing is, Kurt," Blaine said soothingly. "I don't believe Trent feels as strongly for me as you do – or as strongly as I feel for you."
"But what if he does?"
"Then he doesn't love me, Kurt," Blaine said. "Then he loves an idea of me. Because you can't love someone as much as I love you, or the other way around, if you don't know the person like we know each other. That's why we can't put ourselves in his position, because we've already tried being loved back, we already know each other so well, it wouldn't be comparable."
"But does it make such a difference if is he's in love with you or the idea of you?" Kurt asked, his voice still quiet and devastated.
"I think it does," Blaine nodded. "I think that that makes it easier to get rejected. Because you can't have an idea like you can have a person. And even if you think you're convinced that your idea is a person, deep down you know you're lying to yourself."
"Do you really think it works like that?"
"No," he shrugged. "I have no idea. But that's how I cope."
"You're good at finding ways to cope, you know?" Kurt said quietly and wrapped his arms around his neck, hugging him closer. "People always say I'm strong," he shook his head slightly, and Blaine felt it on his shoulder where he had placed it. "They haven't met you."
"That's not true," Blaine said hugging him back, his arms around his slim waist. "I'm very good at lying to myself to keep calm and coping. You always deal with the facts, the truth."
Kurt pulled back slightly to look him in the eyes. "Does it really matter how you do it? Isn't life just about surviving? Everything goes, right?"
Kurt's lips cut off Blaine's huff, swift but meaningful. When he way too soon pulled away, Blaine grabbed the back of his head and pushed him closer again, kissing him deeply. Kurt hummed into the kiss and his arms tightened around his neck. The sandwich fell to the ground with a bump, but neither noticed.
For multiple moments they got lost in each other. Blaine's tongue felt so soft against his, yet so strong, and his lips tasted so familiar and sweet.
"You two should get a room, you know?" someone said as they passed and they jumped apart.
Kurt blushed madly and Blaine laughed silently against his lips. Though they were big on PDA, they kept it PG, mostly just pecks if anything.
"We should-" Kurt breathed.
"Right. Trent," Blaine nodded and kissed him one more time before pulling away completely. "Low on PDA, right?"
"Right," Kurt nodded, taking the – luckily tightly wrapped – sandwich from the ground, and together they walked to the library, both feeling odd not to have any physical contact at all.
When they reached the library, they indeed did find Trent sitting at the end of aisle four at a table, hunched over a book. Even from the distance his miserable demeanor could be felt. Kurt moved instantly, holding the, now slightly damaged, sandwich in his hand as an anchor. He felt odd not being able to hold Blaine's hand to ground him.
When Trent heard the movement he looked up, and when his gaze caught sight of the two boys his eyes widened in shock and dread, and his face scrunched up miserably. For a moment Kurt was scared he would cry.
"I-I'm really sorry, please- please don't," he stuttered and his eyes glazed with tears. At that Kurt came closer, sitting down beside him, placing the sandwich towards him and taking his hand in his soothingly.
"We brought you lunch," he said with a reassuring smile and he felt Blaine sit down beside him, making him relax slightly.
For a moment Trent just looked at them as if he literally did not understand what Kurt had just said. With his mouth agape and his eyes wide, now more in confusion than dread, he said, "I- don't… understand?"
"You haven't eaten in forever," Blaine said and gave him a small smile. Trent efficiently did not look at him. "We've noticed."
"Hey?" Kurt said, still holding the boy's hand. "Trent, we just want to talk to you. We're sorry we just came unannounced like this, startling you, but we couldn't get in touch with you any other way."
"You're," Trent looked just as confused as before. "You're not gonna… beat me up?"
"No, we're not," Kurt said. "We just want to talk, Trent. We know what happened."
"I'm so sorry, Kurt!" Trent then exclaimed his face still scrunched up, as if he was keeping himself from breaking down. "I'm so sorry for what I said to you. I know it was wrong, I just- I don't- I'm so sorry." He looked down and the way his breath hitched in the end of the sentence made Kurt positive he couldn't hold back the tears anymore.
"I know. We know, Trent," Kurt said, his voice gentle. Beside him Blaine nodded and smiled as well, but Trent still stubbornly kept his eyes off him.
"How?" he asked drying his tears with an angry finger. "I don't- understand."
"Sebastian made you do this, didn't he?" Blaine then asked, and for a fraction of a second Trent's eyes flickered to his face, shock settling in them as he looked away instantly again.
"He- how do you know…?" Trent stammered.
"Did we ever tell you how Blaine and I got together?" Kurt asked softly, still hating to put the boy through this.
"Please don't-"
"I'm really sorry, Trent, I really am," Kurt said, "but you have to understand this." Trent looked up at him again, looking bewildered again at Kurt's apologies. Kurt smiled crookedly. "I know you love him, Trent. He does, too."
At that Trent inhaled deeply, and his eyes became frantic for a second.
"It's okay, Trent," Blaine said. "It's fine."
"I'm so- how do you-?"
"Just- let us explain?" Kurt said, his hand squeezing Trent's. The boy looked at him for a second, as if he had never seen him before in his life, then down at their hands, then nodded slightly. "I'm sorry, but we have to explain how we got together for you to understand. I promise we're not doing this to hurt you."
Kurt looked at Trent, waiting for him to respond. When he nodded stiffly, Blaine spoke.
"I guess it all started around regionals," he said with his calm, soothing voice, and Kurt felt an urge to reach out and take his hand as well. "Sebastian approached me and at first he seemed nice. I had heard about his reputation, but I decided that people hadn't even given him a chance, so I chose to be the first. We became kind of friends, I guess you can call it." Blaine grimaced slightly. "I saw how he would flirt with me all the time, I noticed his comments, but I just figured that was his way of being. I made a big mistake and told him a lot of things that I shouldn't have. I accidently allowed him access to my head and heart. And it was all cool and innocent until Kurt came to Dalton." Blaine looked to his boyfriend, his eyes soft, indicating.
"Sebastian didn't like me," Kurt continued, a cold smile on his lips. "I saw how he looked at me instantly. Of course Blaine didn't, he's the single most oblivious creature on this earth, but I did. And I became worried. Blaine and I were only friends then, and though I hadn't confronted him with my feelings yet, I think I knew I loved him even then. Sebastian knew that, he used that. You see, Trent, that's what he does; he uses people, he manipulates. He told me that Blaine and himself slept together." Trent's eyes widened. "He even told me about a birthmark on Blaine's chest, and of course I had to believe him. We got into a pretty big fight then. We believe- or well, know, that Sebastian's intention was to break us apart. And believe me, Trent, we have no clue why," Kurt assured looking into the blue eyes sincerely. "I don't know what we ever did to him."
"I thought I trusted him, too," Blaine said. "He really was convincing. I'm sure he's told you a lot about us, things that'll make you take his side, but-"
"He hasn't even looked at me," Trent said silently, his voice rough. "He-he said that he would- help me."
"What did he promise, Trent?" Kurt asked cautiously but Trent just shook his head and closed his eyes.
"It's okay, Trent," Blaine said quietly, now looking at Kurt's hand holding the other boy's hand, like he wished it were his own.
"I- it's awful, I don't-" he shook his head, this time more as to shake off his thoughts. "Just- know that I don't want anything to do with him anymore, I- I was just so…"
"We know," Kurt said squeezing his hand with a gentle smile. "What did he want, Trent? What did he say?"
"He- he wanted to break up the two of you," Trent said and Blaine's jaw tensed. Kurt just nodded. Both of the two boys were aware of that. "He said that- that he knew how I felt about- about Blaine," he looked at the table in shame, "and that- he could help me. He told me you wasn't good for Blaine, that- the, risks, it's, I'm so sorry, Kurt, for what I said, I didn't mean-"
"I know, Trent," Kurt just smiled soothingly, though inside he was burning with hate for Sebastian.
"So, he..." Trent continued and swallowed, "he said that if I could help break you up… he would help me get together with…" his eyes became glazed again and he couldn't finish the sentence.
"Trent, we're serious, it's okay," Kurt said and moved closer to rub the boy's back. "We know you made a mistake. Everyone does. It's okay."
"I'm so sorry," Trent just mumbled and Kurt kept rubbing his back soothingly. "I've been so unfair and- and stupid, I don't know what's wrong with me."
"Nothing's wrong with you, Trent," Blaine said quietly. "We've all been there. I know you can't look me in the eye right now, but- someday you will. And I'll still be there. That's what friends are for, you see. And, Trent, I'll always be your friend. I'm- I'm really sorry I can't be more, but-"
"You don't have to explain, Blaine," Trent said miserably, still not looking at him directly. "Of course you can't love me."
"But Trent, you have to stop seeing it like that," Blaine said. "You're an amazing guy, you really are. I was just too… messed up before. And-"
"And you love Kurt," Trent nodded. "I know. We all do. And you don't have to feel bad about your feelings."
"Then you have to stop feeling bad about yours, Trent," Blaine said his voice still deep and calm. "I wish I would do something about it, but-"
"I know," Trent nodded.
"Look," Blaine said carefully. "Why don't I give you two some time alone?" Kurt looked up at him and when their eyes locked Kurt saw the flaming anger inside them. He knew it was aimed for Sebastian. He nodded with a small, grateful smile, and Blaine sent one back before going. Kurt felt odd when Blaine didn't kiss him.
"I'm so sorry I've been so angry, Kurt," Trent said after a bit of silence. "I've been- mad at you because I was so jealous, and, it was wrong, but I just couldn't…"
"Trent, you have to stop being so hard on yourself," Kurt said with a sterner, though still very gentle voice. "I would probably act the same way."
Trent just nodded, his face still guilt-stricken.
"I- I'm sorry if we- if we shouldn't have come together," Kurt said hesitantly. "I just- Blaine really wanted to say it was okay as well."
"You don't have to do that, Kurt," Trent just said now with a small smile on his lips. "Calling him 'Blaine'," he said when Kurt looked at him inquiringly. "You never do that. You call him 'B'. And there's never a moment where the two of you don't somehow are physically connected." Kurt looked at him with a guilty expression. "It's okay. I need to get over him, anyway."
"I'm so sorry, Trent," Kurt whispered. "I can't imagine… I'm just so sorry. If we had known…"
"Kurt, really it's- it's fine," Trent said, now soothing him. "I don't think that- I don't know how this stuff works, but- I think I've realized that maybe- maybe, it isn't Blaine I'm in love with. I mean, he was just nice to me, that doesn't mean he's everything, right?" Kurt chuckled once, looking at Trent fondly. "Maybe I'm just lonely? Maybe I'm in love with an idea? I mean I don't even know Blaine that well."
"That does make sense," Kurt nodded and thought back to what Blaine had said earlier. "But Trent, you don't have to be lonely, okay? You can always come to me. Or B," he smiled. "Though just me in the first place, if you're more comfortable with that."
"I just don't know how you can take this so nicely," Trent shook his head. "I- I was so… Kurt you should never forgive me for that."
"Well, I am," Kurt just shrugged. "You just have to forgive yourself now."
"I know," Trent said, "but I don't know how."
"I know. But someday you will. Time is a wonderful healer," Kurt said with a crooked smile still rubbing his back.
"How do you know you love him, Kurt?" Trent said quietly, looking down at the table again.
"We don't have to talk about-"
"I want to know," Trent insisted. "I think it could help me. I mean I can see how much you love him, but- if I could also know? I think that could help me get over my- thing. And it can make me sure whether this is just some stupid fantasy."
"Feelings are never stupid," Kurt said silently, but gave in, nodding. "I can't explain why, Trent, I... I love everything about him. I love how he's so good to people, always so polite, even when it can be a pain in the ass. I love how he always smiles so brightly when I come into a room and he spots me, like I just made his day so much better just by being there. I love how he always tells me so, because he's the single most cheesy person in the world and he's aware of it." He smiled as kept on. "I love how he smells like- like cinnamon and… honey." How he always makes sure I come first during sex, so he's positive I enjoy every last bit. How he always tells me how beautiful I am, and how he already knows my body better than myself. "How he always knows just what to say to make me feel better, and how he keeps getting new ideas just when you thought he was done, because he never really gives up completely. How he always calls me 'beautiful' or 'love', and never grows tired of it. How he's always been my most supportive, best friend, and he still is. And how my deepest wish in the entire world is to get to live long enough to marry him." He looked down for a second, and he felt Trent's eyes on him. His fingers were playing with the ring around his finger.
"I can't say one thing that explains why I love him," he said, his smile so soft and his eyes sparkling, though he wasn't aware of it himself. "I just do. I love him and all I can do is to come up with things that make him, him."
Trent's face had gone softer, and the corner of his mouth was turned upwards in a small smile. At the sight Kurt's smile widened.
"He's the love of your life, isn't he?" Trent asked quietly, his eyes now aimed at the ring on Kurt's left hand and Kurt smiled wearily at him and nodded.
"Yeah. Yeah, he is," he said in a small voice. "Trent, I don't- I don't want this to sound- mocking or- harsh or anything, but I need you to know that, if- if I were in your situation I- I wouldn't cope. I wouldn't be able to breathe, and I'm so, so sorry you have to go through-"
"Don't-" Trent said, his voice soothing. "Don't put yourself in my position, Kurt, our situations- they're not the same." Kurt looked at him oddly and he slowly discovered that maybe Blaine had been right in that hallway. "I couldn't feel that way about him, I didn't recognize any of those things about him. I don't know him at all like you do."
Kurt smiled a little smile, his eyes wide and grateful.
"You're such a good person, Kurt," he said. "One of the reasons why I was so jealous, actually." Kurt shook his head, a small, sad smile on his lips. "Don't feel bad about that," Trent added when he saw the expression on Kurt's face. "I just meant to say that you deserve him. And he deserves you. I'm so sorry I tried to come in between that."
"Don't worry, Trent," Kurt said with his little smile. "Nothing can really come in between us. Especially not Sebastian that filth."
Trent huffed in agreement. Then his expression softened. "I really appreciate you coming here," he said with an earnest smile, and for the first time in weeks, Kurt saw a glimpse of the old Trent again. "Thank you."
"It's perfectly fine, Trent," Kurt said. "And thank you."
"There's no reason at all to thank me, Kurt," Trent said and shook his head as he stood from his chair, taking the sandwich with him with a grateful smile. "Thank you so much for that one, I'm starving." And as a response his stomach rumbled hungrily. At his 'I told you so' expression Kurt laughed and stood as well. Trent seemed a bit startled when Kurt hugged him close, but embraced him back anyway.
"Just… just thank you, Trent," Kurt whispered before letting go and Trent nodded and smiled a genuine smile before taking his bag with him and heading off.
As expected, Kurt found Blaine in the gym, in the midst of breaking his fists as he slammed them against the punching bag. Kurt was relieved to see that he in the least was wearing boxing gloves. For a few seconds he kept still, watching his boyfriend plant punch after hard punch to the bag. He enjoyed watching Blaine box, and not just because of the obvious reasons – he was hot as hell, and his ass simply looked sinful in those shorts – but because after every punch his shoulders would sag a bit more, as if he was punching out all of his frustrations. When he thought back to the flaming eyes he had looked into prior that day, he understood why.
"Hey, you," he said and came a bit closer.
At the voice Blaine stopped immediately and turned to look at him. He smiled that way, that exact way Kurt had just mentioned to Trent before. "Hi," he said softly, taking off his gloves, and unwrapped the white bandages from his hands underneath. "How did it go?"
"Good," Kurt said with a smile, leaning against a locker. "You were right. He wasn't in love with you. At least he thinks so."
Blaine smiled wryly, and came closer. Kurt gave him a stern glare. "You're sweaty," he said with a stern voice.
"I know, I'll go shower in a bit," Blaine said dismissively. Then he cupped Kurt's face with his hands and pressed his lips to his, careful not to touch him with the rest of his body. Kurt smiled slightly into the kiss as he reciprocated and closed his fingers around Blaine's wrists.
"You're amazing," Blaine said when they broke apart. "I had such a hard time keeping calm about that with Sebastian, and you just did."
"Trust me, I want that thing to be his face just as much as you do," Kurt said and gestured at the punching bag. Blaine chuckled and nodded bitterly. "Hey?" he continued and traced a finger down his cheek that was slightly damp with sweat. "Just ignore him, okay? Don't punch him or lose your temper around him or anything, no matter how hard he tries to make you. 'Cause he probably will."
Blaine nodded and closed his eyes for a second. "I need to shower," he then just said. "Come with me?" His voice weren't hinting anything, it merely sounded like he wanted to be close to him, as if those moments apart had been hard on him.
Kurt smiled and nodded, grateful that so few had the energy to work out after a school day, and the gym was empty.
"I still don't get it," Blaine said against Kurt's neck in the shower. Kurt held him a bit closer, enjoying the feeling of the hot water against his skin along with Blaine's bare body pressed against his. "What does he want?"
"I don't know, honey," Kurt said quietly, kissing his temple. "I don't know."
Blaine pulled a bit back smiling at him crookedly. "I'm glad now, though."
Kurt looked at him with mild confusion.
"Now we can get to enjoy tomorrow," he explained and opened the shower gel, rubbing in Kurt's body with the nicely scented gel.
"Yeah, we can," Kurt said, smiling at the act and took the bottle from him to spread the soap onto his boyfriend's body as well, loving the feeling of Blaine's muscled chest and arms under his palms. He let his thumbs stroke the V-shaped hip bones when done, and smiled seductively. Blaine rolled his eyes, chuckling, and kissed him deeply for a few seconds.
They took turns to massage the shampoo into each other's hair as well and though Kurt felt silly about it, he couldn't help but love the feeling of his boyfriend's magical fingers massaging his scalp and how Blaine would always moan in that silly, hot, way whenever he as much as touched his hair. That of course resulted in a rather long make out session, and Kurt almost felt bad for the water bill that had to come.

I know this was short, but I'll make sure to not be too long with the next chapter :) Whatta you think? Anyone other than me that thinks Sebastian is a douche?
