He ran the tip of his fingertips along the curves of her shoulders smiling as her skin accused the soft touch, as he came down between her shoulders he trailed the wrinkled skin all the way down to her lower back.
Caroline trapped her bottom lip with her teeth. "Is there a plan in the near future to replace that touch with your lips?"
He smiled resting his palm completely against her skin now, he caressed all of her curves so gently and slowly that Caroline suddenly became really grateful for having them.
"Are you taking measures for another Princess dress? Or maybe you're planning on drawing me butt naked…" she teased him with a blunt smirk.
He responded with a lazy smile that matched the pattern he was making with his hand over her naked body.
"I'm totally ruining the erotic moment by talking nonstop…" she looked at him from her pillow with a set of blazing blue eyes.
He lifted his from the body he was worshiping and this time he smirked deliciously mischievous enough. "You tend to talk additionally when you are tremendously nervous or exceptionally blissful."
"Simmer down your ego lover..." she teased him carelessly with a giggle.
Klaus smiled lowering his head to leave a soft kiss on her shoulder before he moved to rest on his side, he faced the ceiling with a look that came off as reminiscent to Caroline and she lifted her head a little warily.
"And in contradiction you become so quiet when you are happy… why is that?" she asked him quietly while her hand gently moved to stroke his features with love. "Why do you always retrieve to this place of solitude?"
By now he should be used to the jarring ways of Caroline and yet here she was again, probing into his soul like she had any right to it. "Because I've taught myself to believe that that's where I belong."
Caroline gulped down a surprisingly shocking reaction to his blunt words and used the back of her hand to caress his cheek. "Like you convinced yourself that you were nothing but pure evil and that you were unworthy of love?"
There was a shuddering wave of vulnerability crossing his features and then he slowly took her hand away from his face, before Caroline could deal with the real shock he was already leaving the bed.
She knew him by now, she knew that there was still a chance that he might close up as she tried to make him talk about the things he kept too guarded and to himself, like the human years that she knew to be heavy on him.
Caroline got dressed as he did, it was clear that their night was over and there was no need to make things more complicated, having Klaus with his back on her getting dressed was raw enough to stay in bed wrapped in a sheet while naked and pondering how she just ruined an amazing end to their night.
There was a sudden sadness towards the direction that things were headed and Caroline decided to remain as quiet as possible while getting the first pieces of underwear that she found and it wasn't until she was picking up a random pair of Jeans from her closet that she felt the idiotic warmth that came to her eyes, she was about to cry.
In reality it was a silence of only a few short minutes but to her it felt like an immeasurable amount of time until his voice echoed inside of her bedroom again.
"Every single time that my father left me for dead after another heavy beating, I have wished that he would just finish the job but he seemed to know exactly when to stop, when to pull back the whip just so that I survived to endure another one of his rage fits…"
Caroline looked back at him aware that she wasn't even breathing, Klaus was closing the wrists of his shirt but instead of moving from the buttons he seemed to be going back in time and recalling the ways he was restrained during his painful human life.
"The blood and the scars healed but not that one assurance that his words were accurate, because no one ever stepped in to stop him and certainly not to contradict all that he ever told me." his voice dropped so much that for a second he thought Caroline wouldn't listen to his words, which was wiser considering how much he already hated himself for even uttering them.
But her soft, caring and dangerously addictive touch startled him as she laced her arms around him.
Caroline rested her face on his back and her hands on his chest. "I'll fight for you, I won't let him win because your parents were the unworthy ones."
She couldn't see his smile but it was there, sad and dancing around the notion that she was simply saying it to make him feel better, which was a novelty in his life but still a biased one.
However Caroline Forbes did not settle easily and she went around him so that she could face him. "You don't believe me."
"I find you prejudiced." he was honest with her.
She merely shrugged at him. "So what? You are my mess now and I'm allowed to be biased with you. I'm not saying that I agree with the way that you rebelled after given the chance to never feel again, I'm not making excuses for the things that you've done but I am saying that I can look past it now that I know from where all of it comes and I want you to share them with me nonetheless."
"There's not much to share sweetheart, terrible people are just that, terrible." he answered somewhat cold.
She adorably gave him a shake of her head. "You spent an entire night digging twelve graves so that I didn't have to deal with the fact that I just killed twelve women. And are we really going to do this Nik? Because I know all the things that I've said and God only knows I still mean half of them but if there is one thing I've learned since I've moved here to New Orleans is that it's not as scary as I thought it would be."
"What isn't love?" he lowered his voice again as Caroline closed the space between them by melting her body with his.
"Falling in love with you." she whispered with a perfect smile.
Her hands were warming his chest and her eyes sparkling in a happiness that he still found hard to believe that it was meant for him, he could not recall a single time anyone had looked at him this precise way, certainly there was no pity in her eyes like the one he found in his siblings after every unbearable beating from their father.
He was used to the hatred, the repulsion, the arousal as he flirted with someone or the sheer panic and horror crossing the stare of those he killed but he was not used to the simple acceptance in her eyes.
Caroline looked at him understanding how easy it was to cave in to the harsh and cruel words that wounded more than the feeling of flesh opening with each strike his father inflicted on him.
His strong hand powerfully traveled to the side of her neck. "I deemed you too smart to be seduced by me sweetheart."
She batted those long lashes of hers once. "I'm taking a chance, I'm getting to know you…" she smiled before slightly tapping his chest. "But you need to let me in without lifting a wall every time that you are not comfortable with me inside of your personal space."
His hands moved to her hair, the wild golden curls that he loved so much and when his eyes landed on hers she noticed how he was visibly struggling with words.
Caroline's breath changed as she slowly saw where this might be headed, he licked his lips so slowly that she actually felt dizzy.
The moment was almost too perfectly draw out and she could barely believe this was actually happening, then as he was about to say what she was sure not to handle properly and with a steady breathing Bonnie's voice harshly interrupted their moment.
"I think that someone broke in…"
Caroline pulled away from Klaus at once and reached for the first top inside of a drawer, she glanced only once at him before exiting the bedroom with unsteady legs and she left him closing up his shirt not even sure how he almost said what he never expected to say to anyone, at least with her awareness and in a language that she could understand.
"I think that we should extend our date…" Jesse held a tie that he just picked up from the floor.
Caroline snatched it from his hand as soon as she reached the couple. "Hi!" she smiled at them with a cute tease. "How was your date?"
Jesse looked at Bonnie waiting for an answer as well.
She handed over Caroline's clutch with a glare. "I found this on the porch."
"That was a very long date, the sun is coming up already." she made it sound like it was Jesse's jacket that she was picking up from the floor instead of Klaus'.
"Jesse insisted on giving me the Haunted tour." Bonnie smiled while giving her date a side-look.
He beamed happy. "I loved her reaction to every ghost story in town."
Caroline pressed her lips hard and hit Jesse with her clutch, the hybrid stared at her stunned with her action.
"My friend was a ghost the entire summer and you took her out on the Zombie tour? Insensitive much Jesse?" Caroline hit him again with clasped lips and an angry snarl that she kept under breath.
"Stop hitting me." Jesse demanded promptly. "Please…" he lowered his voice and attitude as Klaus came into sight with a warning stare.
"Seriously? I should have planned this date to the last detail myself." she huffed a few locks away from her face.
"It wasn't so bad." Bonnie reassured Caroline with a smile.
"Does that mean that I've earned the epic kiss at the end of the date?" Jesse asked carefree.
"No." Bonnie answered with absolute confidence.
"That was… unwavering." Jesse grimaced.
"I think that you are a really nice guy and I like the easygoing attitude but… let's not do this again." Bonnie nodded once before she left to her bedroom.
"Okay… I'm… going to get wasted then." Jesse said pointing at the door and then left a bit defeated.
"I see now why Kol hasn't been whining much about his dead phase." Klaus took the tie from Caroline's hands.
"Let me guess… he has a thing for strong women." Caroline held back the tie inside of her closed hand and narrowed her eyes at him.
"Don't we all love?" he teased her with a smirk. "Are you planning on giving good usage to that tie Caroline?"
A series of blushing thoughts rushed to her mind but she opened her hand quickly. "I'm making breakfast."
"All right." he answered moving to put away the tie.
She swiftly turned back and snatched the item from his hand. "I'm keeping it…" she whispered not lingering her eyes on his afraid that he would read all the scandalous ideas that she was having right now.
He chuckled and she rolled her eyes angry at herself, of course that he could read right through her good girl wanting to go naughty routine.
"Bonnie, I'm making breakfast." she shouted into the hallway while clearing the table.
"I really could use the coffee." Bonnie showed up in a more comfortable attire, she sat at the table and then looked at Klaus pulling the sleeves of her long cardigan up slowly. "Do you mind the third wheel?"
"Not at all." he answered without looking at her, he had a smile that diminished as he checked the large amount of missed calls on his phone.
"Is everything ok?" Bonnie asked looking at Caroline who neared the table noticing the increasing change in Klaus as well.
He returned one of the various missed calls and they all looked at the door as Rebekah walked inside with Elijah.
"You really need to start keeping tabs on your phone Nik." she waved her ringing phone.
"What's wrong?" Bonnie was the first to really react as her eyes landed on the older brother coming inside of the house with a concerned appearance.
"Kol has been abducted." Elijah placed the family ring that belonged to Kol on top of the table.
Bonnie reached for it with a confused turn of phrase. "Abducted how?"
"When I got home this morning there was a blood pool in the living room and they left his ring right in the middle of it." Rebekah explained.
Bonnie rushed out to her bedroom without another word.
"Who would take Kol, and why?" Caroline glanced back to her friend as she returned with a candle and a map of the city.
"I need blood." Bonnie said while making room for the spell on the table and lightening up the candle even before Klaus closed his hand around the knife.
The blood didn't stop in any geographic area and instead gathered all up at the edge of the map which was not a good sign.
"Is the map madcap or are you just broken?" Rebekah snapped all too soon.
"It means that he isn't being held inside of the city." Klaus answered for Bonnie.
Caroline's phone started ringing which was bad timing but since she was slow to take her cellphone from inside of her clutch she missed the call, she also grimaced realizing the amount of missed calls that she had from Elena.
"I will start searching outside the city." Elijah couldn't stand still and opened his suit jacket. "We shouldn't have left him alone at the house."
"Kol is not entirely defenceless." Klaus felt particularly offended by Elijah's remark.
"He is not immortal." Elijah countered on edge.
"Then perhaps instead of staying at your house lamenting the death of a turncoat you should have been babysitting Kol." Klaus was so fast on his wit that Elijah closed his suit distressed.
"I'm sure you will find a way to pin this on everyone else but yourself." He scoffed.
Klaus mocked him with a fake smile. "I'll have my hybrids searching for him before you decide which car to take and they will find him soon enough."
"This wouldn't have happened if we had turned him like he asked of us." Elijah lowered his head troubled.
"We weren't even sure if he could be turned." Rebekah got in the middle of the heated exchange of words. "And I'm positive that this has to do with your enemies." she accused Klaus at once.
"Yes Rebekah, that was my plan all along, to bring him back just so I could get him killed all over." Klaus said between clench teeth and it wasn't long before all three Originals shot in a heated argument that was impossible to sort out at all.
"Hey!" Caroline interrupted everyone with a commanding shout.
The Originals looked at her with a shared frown.
"This is not helpful at all." she used her finger to cover each of them and then focused on the call as she finally got an answer from the other side.
The siblings looked at each other quietly admitting that she was right but the change in Caroline's features wasn't a good omen.
"What do you mean missing?" Caroline murmured the words searching for Klaus' eyes as she heard the dreadful news from Elena.
Everyone looked at her quizzically as she took the phone down from her ear unable to carry on a coherent conversation with the girl left back in Mystic Falls.
"My mom is missing, they found her car with blood but they can't find her anywhere." Caroline tried to steady her thoughts but they were racing too fast for a proper rational plan. "I'm going back to Mystic Falls to look for her."
Bonnie grabbed Kol's ring hesitating when Caroline looked at her and she glanced over to Klaus and the others, they had to split up now but surprisingly she wasn't sure which search team to join.
"Stefan is not picking up." Rebekah informed the small troubled crowd.
Bonnie placed Kol's ring around her index finger trying to understand why she was in such a predicament.
"I'm going with Caroline." Klaus wasn't one to dwell on a decision and looked ready to torture a few answers out of everyone he could get his hands on.
As much as she truly loved him for it Caroline knew that he was divided in his choice. "No... you should stay here and search for Kol, I will keep trying to reach Stefan in the meantime and see if he can go with me."
"That might be a little hard to achieve." the confident and snarky voice took everyone by surprise and Leah loved it, she smiled as she came inside of Caroline's house with a daunting smile. "Stefan at the moment is a little busy fighting wolf venom, I also have your mother and Kol trapped somewhere uncanny." She looked at Caroline but it was Rebekah who flashed crushing her against a wall ruthlessly.
"Where is my brother Kol?" Rebekah asked with very little tolerance, when Leah tried moving Rebekah showed her fangs and scary red eyes. "You will have to write it down because I'm about to yank your tongue out."
"In different circumstances I would be incredibly turned on right now." Leah managed to muse through the menacing grip of Rebekah. "I might still be though."
It confused Rebekah a little and the Original eased her force a little. "Tell me where he is."
"On an island, I think that you have been a guest there once..." Leah flicked her eyes to the other Originals closing in on her. "I would listen to what I have to say before you take turns to collect my life." There was a phone that she took from her coat waving it as she spoke. "In ten minutes someone will call me and if I don't take the call and tell him to wait, Oz is going to kill Liz Forbes. And since you are thinking about it, I can't be compelled." she added for the dramatic flair that she needed.
"What do you want with my mother?" Caroline asked nearing the witch as well.
"Oz is a nice loyal werewolf working for Landon." Leah waited for Rebekah to step back so that she could move but the small witch knew better than to move further an inch from where she was.
"You don't waste any time making alliances Selene." Klaus called for the witch's attention.
"I bend where I need to bend." Leah playfully smirked. "Landon needed a little witch favor and I needed his venom. As for what you will find in the island… I still needed a favor and he wanted revenge for a few nasty words exchanged between the two of you."
"My mom has nothing to do with this." Caroline's comment came mostly to herself, her mother shouldn't be thrown into the mix of a turf battle.
"Good old leverage is a beautiful thing gorgeous." she winked at Caroline before focusing on Klaus again. "They are all being kept on the island where Silas was trapped and where you will be going."
"What do you expect out of this little charade?" Elijah asked awfully too close to her.
In fact after another blink she was faced with three deadly vampires breathing on her face, still she was able to keep a respectful game face. "There is a coffin on that island that I want."
"Be more specific, the last treasure hunt I ensued was not memorable at all but at least I knew exactly what I was fetching for." Rebekah inched closer to Leah.
"Focus on the small detail that your brother is currently bleeding to death and that you shouldn't waste time with trivial questions. The faster you get to that island, bigger are your chances to reach him on time." Leah smiled as her phone started ringing. "What should I tell Oz?"
"How do we get that coffin?" Bonnie asked from where she had been, staring down the table and trying to make anything out of the power oozing from the other witch.
"It can only be seen by those who have been on the other side, it's very convenient for me that you and Kol just had the tour and that Landon wanted to make Klaus sweat a little over his brother, I like Landon a lot by the way, he has a vicious taste for revenge." Leah answered the ringing phone. "Oz? There are guests headed your way, tighten up the place and wait for my next call." Leah ended the call and motioned to leave but Rebekah and the others only appeared to short the space that she had left to breathe, she lifted her eyes to the family a breath away from killing her. "Have I mentioned how time is of extreme urgency? Because Stefan doesn't have much time before those awful hallucinations kick in and the humans back at the island are not that durable, unlike me." she took her time looking at each one of them. "I've linked myself to Davina so I have all the power she harvest so far, that makes me a little harder to kill." she daringly smiled again. "Have fun on the island, l'll be waiting for my coffin outside your house with Stefan, don't take too long." she addressed Klaus lastly.
"Enjoy your free day with Landon, I will be collecting your heads once I have my brother back." Klaus returned the smile.
"I'm sure that you will try Klaus and I'm one of those snakes that just keep getting away." she moved away from the wall and slowly they parted enough for her to walk in the middle the Originals but Caroline was waiting for her by the door.
"If anything happens to my mother…" Caroline hissed at her with a warrior's rage.
"Whoever beds someone like Niklaus Mikaelson should be ready for a little collateral damage." she acidly dropped before leaving the house.
Caroline exchanged a quick look with Klaus before he set everything in motion.
"I need a few things from my house." he simply said leaving Caroline's house before everyone else.
"This is a gigantic trap... probably a mistake as well." Bonnie grabbed a few things that she needed as well.
"I'm going to kill that bitch when I get back." Rebekah snarled.
"I will assist you." Elijah said with confidence.
It made his sister smile and that was saying a lot considering how messy things were right now.
"I really don't like this place." Bonnie sighed looking at the dense forest ahead of them.
Klaus looked around the beautiful beach, the white sand and the blue ocean were such a contrast to the things he heard about the place. "Something so ethereal can't be that rough to the touch."
Bonnie chuckled taking the lead into the forest. "This island is one fat lady that will sing until she is very dead."
"Did Kol teach you that one Bonnie?" Rebekah asked with a big smile.
Bonnie smiled as she tried once again to remember the way to the caves. "Last time we were here, I said that he was a walking joke."
"Just to get a few matters straight, were you dead or on vacation together?" Klaus asked with a teasing that was reprimanded by Caroline at once.
"Silas sent us here to free Amara but we found Qetsiyah instead."
"Were you here with Rebekah when she came looking for the cure Caroline?" Elijah asked as they reached a path that was made of dirt.
"No, I stayed back in Mystic Falls." she quietly answered him.
"She was left fondling with Nik's sword." Rebekah muttered the joke just next to a chuckling Bonnie.
Although Caroline could hear it she wasn't even bothered by it.
"We will rescue your mother Caroline." Elijah said with an assurance that made her smile.
"It will be easier to cover more ground if we separate. I doubt that they have kept everyone in the same place so Caroline and I will look for her mother while Bonnie searches for the coffin. You two can look for Kol." Klaus didn't even wait for any reaction as he took Caroline's hand and headed into the forest.
Bonnie opened her arms. "Or I just do a location spell to track Kol." she said aware that Klaus wasn't even going to answer her.
Elijah and Rebekah shook their heads at the same time as they watched Klaus disappear into the thick woods.
Caroline hardly stopped a branch from hitting her face as Klaus literally dragged her along with him. "Can I switch groups? Because I don't trust your mood right now."
Klaus stopped to look at her a bit taken aback, as he released her hand it was clear that she was waiting for a few words, other than the ones he said of course. "I've caught the scent of blood."
"Do I have a minute to prepare myself?" Caroline asked almost blankly, strangely she had been so quiet and wrapped up in an apathy since they left New Orleans.
"Obviously Selene needs that coffin badly so she won't kill your mother just yet."
"You are an expert in mind games and torture so I believe you." she went ahead of him.
He painfully smiled. "I wasn't wrong when I noticed how you were blaming me."
Caroline faced him with a swift turn. "Blaming you? I'm blaming myself for this, for leaving my mother alone in that town, for not being there to protect her from the decisions that I've made." she stroked her forehead distressed. "I'm the one who placed her in danger."
"We should have foreseen that this would happen."
She searched for his eyes confused. "Are you talking about your rivals going after my mother or are you talking about this?" she moved a finger between them addressing what they had instead.
"There will always be a foe at my doorstep." he sounded just about neutral.
It really ticked her off. "I'm not stupid, I know that. I also know that things won't always be as perfect as they were last night, hell, this morning was a great example of all the things we still need to work on. I didn't get into this thinking that you were my Prince Charming because I know exactly who you are... in case you forgot Klaus, you killed me once."
That was the interesting thing about words, they always cut deeper than a blade. "Well sweetheart, I haven't forgotten."
Caroline's breath left her with a draw, she pressed her hands together and leaned them against her lips for a second. "I just need something from you."
He narrowed his eyes clueless. "Am I not engaged in a rescue when I could have simply killed the witch and be done with it all?"
She threw her head back angry and frustrated. "No Klaus, I need something else from you. I need you to tell me that everything will be ok even if you know that we will find my mother dead, I need you to be there for me, I need to know that you have my back like I will have yours no matter what… I need… something." she pulled back her emergent agony by going silent.
Gently he wrapped his arms strongly around her, Caroline closed her eyes finally finding comfort in his silent and tight hug.
"He is just ahead of us." Bonnie looked at the small arrow in the compass pointing to the caves.
"That is one neat spell Bonnie." Rebekah said impressed.
"I saw it in that party that I went with Kol, the witches were trying to locate someone and they used a necklace, every time they touched the compass with it, it pointed somewhere." Bonnie explained touching the compass with her index, whenever Kol's ring touched the iron the arrow pointed north.
"Rather impressive." Elijah agreed with his sister.
He was following the girls closely but stopped when a blur caught the corner of his eye, there was someone hiding in the woods on the right side of the road and slowly he headed there certain that he knew the hiding shadow.
Elijah lost sight of it once he entered the forest but he could hear it moving not far from where he was. "Who is there?"
Again the blur rushed next to him but he followed it this time and easily caught someone under his hand, he moved along with it and pinned someone against a tree, the sweet mischievous laughter made him gasp and Elijah pulled back from the woman incredulous.
"It's not possible." He murmured.
"Always chasing after me Elijah." Katherine smiled at him while her hand warmed his chest.
"You are dead." his voice came troubled.
"True but not in your mind." she said while her heavy curls changed before his eyes into an intricate hairdo, her outfit became a beautiful long dress filled with embroidery and velvet as smooth as the skin he now touched because the dress revealed a striking cleavage.
"Katerina…" he smiled with pain. "Tell me that you are not a fabrication of my wounded heart."
"I am." she stroked his cheek while her skin started to fume.
There was a sadness in her eyes that he couldn't handle and just like that her body began to crumble in ashes until she vanished from his hand and his eyes. "No." he looked down on the ground full of ashes and stepped back horrified.
"That's what you do Elijah, you curse us all."
Another familiar voice startled him and Elijah turned hastily to find Celeste looking at him with a sad expression as well. "I don't understand what's happening."
"The noble Elijah is confused." Celeste moved around in her white dress that clashed so well with her chocolate skin. "He doesn't understand how his blind love for a brother who doesn't love him back leads to everyone's death. He will kill Rebekah one day as well and then you will be left with no one."
"You aren't real so your lies are deceiving as well." Elijah tried to speak with strength but she was exposing his biggest fear.
"Niklaus will never love you, he never did. The one sibling you protected the most and loved the most feels nothing but contempt for you."
"We have lived together for so long, he is more than a brother to me." Elijah's words stumbled on a few kept tears.
"He doesn't want a father Elijah, unless he is planning on killing him." Celeste stood regal in her white dress and her red lips showed him a smile. "Was it worth it losing all the ones you loved just to grip your brother's soul and pull it back from the fires of hell?" she vanished from his sight leaving her words dancing in the air.
"Mom?" Caroline shouted again into the woods, she banged her fists against her legs upset. "Why is that Leah bitch doing this?"
"There has to be something that she requires Kol's blood for." Klaus was going on in his mind about the same issue.
"Because he is an original supernatural being that was resurrected?" she cutely looked at him. "It crossed my mind that Kol is now the new doppelgänger."
"He might be offended if we call him that." Klaus smiled a little at her.
She sweetly bumped her shoulder against his. "You are all a bunch of touchy hearts under that super villain outfit." Klaus didn't laugh as she expected, instead he stopped her from going any further by grabbing her arm.
"Wait…"
"What is it? Can you hear my mom?" she tried moving but he harshly pushed her behind his back as he faced the dense woods surrounding them.
A pack consisting of ten wolves came leisurely out of the forest and they all looked at Klaus with fiery eyes. "You need to run Caroline, I'll handle them." he got ready to fight them.
"Who?" Caroline tried looking over his shoulder.
"It's not the time to go against me Caroline, you have to go, they will hurt you." he warned her while keeping his eyes on the huge creatures bearing their teeth at him.
"I'm not being cute, I just don't see anything." she moved away from his back seeing nothing but a bunch of trees and plants.
"There are wolves ready to sink teeth into anything that they can find." Klaus grabbed both of her arms strongly. "So start running Caroline."
"There is nothing there Nik." she looked again, this time scared because he was seeing things.
Klaus looked behind her and he could still see the pack closing in on them.
"Nik?" Caroline grabbed his sleeve with her hand.
He shook his head trying to make it go away. "I can still see them."
Caroline used all the strength she had in her and pushed him against a tree. "Snap out of it Nik."
As he hit the tree with the back of his head hard, one by one all the wolves disappeared into the woods but then it was Caroline who heard her mother calling for her.
"Caroline? Honey… I'm here. Help me."
"Did you hear that?" Caroline's eyes went wide and before he was able to hold her back Caroline flashed into the woods following the alluring voice.
He tried going after her but there was a harsh hand pushing him down on the ground without warning, when he tried to move there was a sword against his throat, the tip of the sharp blade scratched his skin and Klaus gulped down looking up at the man holding the weapon.
"I'm sure you've missed me, son." Mikael smiled at him.
"Mom?" Caroline shouted louder, the voice stopped talking to her and she was aimlessly looking for it again. "Mom, are you there?" she asked again feeling that blanket of panic wanting to cover her.
"No, but I am." the blonde smiled as he showed up in front of Caroline.
Immediately she took a step back. "Silas…"
"I missed our encounters feisty Caroline."
"Go away… you are not real." she gritted her teeth.
"Nonsense." he rolled his eyes and came at Caroline with a stake she hadn't seen.
Caroline dodged his first assault and shoved him against the nearest tree, when he quickly recovered with the biggest smirk she clasped her lips and punched him right in the face. "My hallucination, my way."
Silas laughed sweeping the blood from his split lip. "That was very endearing of you Caroline but I have something important to tell you."
She fumed at him with the biggest hatred look on her face. "What?"
Silas was too fast for her and although she tried fighting him he easily pinned her arm behind her back and shoved a stake into her chest, just that close to her heart and Caroline fell to her knees overtaken by pain.
He held her just enough to whisper in her ear. "I'm not a hallucination."
Caroline closed her eyes falling unconscious on the ground.
"We lost Elijah…" Rebekah joined Bonnie at the entrance of the cave. "I can't find him anywhere."
"He knows where we are so he can find us later." Bonnie wanted to go inside at once.
"He left us." Rebekah said in a strange mutter.
Bonnie frowned touching her arm. "Rebekah?"
"Elijah left us, Nik will leave me too and I will be all alone."
"You are not making any sense to me Rebekah."
The blonde simply whooshed away, back to the forest and left Bonnie alone.
"Rebekah?" Bonnie shouted after the blonde but it was Caroline who came running down the path.
"Something in this island is messing with everyone, Klaus saw werewolves and I saw Silas just now." Caroline quickly explained her.
"Not something… someone." Bonnie grabbed Caroline's hand and hurried inside of the caves.
They were a known maze to her by now and she easily reached the main cavern where they had found Silas' body the first time, if the other time the image had left her uneasy, today what she found left her horrified.
There were two heavy chains strapped to the ceiling holding Kol's arms stretched apart from his body, he was kneeling and his head was hanging down, he was in the middle of a circle made of black candles and black salt symbols that were now all smeared in red from all the blood that was leaving his wrists and dripping to the ground.
"Oh my God!" Caroline exclaimed, she pulled her hair behind her ear and concentrated. "He is still alive, I can hear his heart faintly beating."
"They used him on a ritual…" Bonnie was careful not to knock any of the candles as she went inside of the circle.
"A ritual for what?" Caroline asked attentively watching her.
"There are a lot of symbols that I don't know but I think that he tried fighting what they were doing to him and somehow his magic took over, which he probably didn't even realize until it was all out of control."
"Are you saying that Kol is the one playing with the mind of everyone in this island?" Caroline asked dropping her voice.
"Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying Care, he is taking everyone's biggest fear and using it to hurt them." Bonnie explained as a black smoke appeared in front of Kol, slowly gaining shape and forming a dark figure. "Do you really want to fight me now?" she asked The Shadows with the slightest move.
The dark figure made of smoke smiled at her and changed appearance, she couldn't make anything out of it, just that she was scared of it.
Bonnie lessened her eyes and opened her hand channeling her magic and when the dark smoke came at her ready to hurt her she pushed it back with her hand, stopping the agonizing figure that had an open mouth going wider, ready to devour all of her until there was nothing left but her fear and compliance.
But she had other plans today and she pushed her palm forward hitting the powerful smoke with bigger force this time, it was enough to get past the troubling obstacle and to reach Kol.
Bonnie could feel the smoke daunting her, nearing her from behind, ready to swallow all of her magic and senses, to paralyse her into excruciating pain and she closed her eyes as the smoke reached her hand, still bravely she fought that first sting of pain crawling up her arm and she knelt in front of Kol taking his face into her hands. "Kol, it's me Bonnie. I need you to listen to me."
There was not the faintest reaction from him at all but she stroked his damped features with her thumbs gently and her voice became soft and caring.
"You need to find an anchor, something that will keep you grounded and connected to this world, that's the only way you will be able to control your magic and not allow it to control you. Find something that is meaningful to you and bind yourself to it."
He briefly motioned his eyelids struggling to open his eyes but after that first attempt he went dormant again.
She kept talking to him. "Take back your control over it Kol." she demanded from him before softening up. "Before it kills you."
He kept his eyes closed but the light in all the candles flicked around them and the creepy smoke started fading until it dissipated completely in the air.
"You never cease to amaze me Bennett." Caroline said with the coldest voice.
"What?" Bonnie frowned glancing back.
Caroline was nothing but eerie in her smile as she flashed and laced an arm around Bonnie's throat choking her.
Bonnie only had one good hand and of no match to a vampire, she began to dither on precious air while punching the arm cutting her life short.
"If it makes you feel any better during these last seconds, I'm Silas not Caroline and I need Kol just that bit off the rails so you can't help him right now. It's time to go back home my precious ones, you don't belong on this side. After all we need to balance nature and all that." he sounded mocking and disrespectful enough.
Bonnie's arm slid down limp to the ground and she closed her eyes drifting into the most soothing give in.
Silas could feel her life fading and he smiled, however it was an emotion that didn't last for very long because the softest growl echoed inside of the cave, at first Silas thought that it was coming from somewhere else but all the lights around them went out at once.
Silas narrowed his eyes and looked at Kol, there was no sound or movement coming from the Mikaelson but something was undeniably dissimilar.
Out of nowhere and with a single motion all the candles lit up again around the circle, Silas kept his eyes on the chained man stunned and a bit doubtful of all the power brewing in front of him.
Slowly Kol lifted his head releasing another guttural noise while his eyes were black as coal.
To be continued.
