WE ARE JUST THE SAME PART 2 - CHAPTER 24
It was a little after 4am when Arizona Robbins came walking in the front door of the home her family had long been sleeping in. She locked the door behind her and dropped her keys on the table before hanging up her bag and slipping off her shoes. She looked down and smiled to herself as she noticed the pile of little shoes on the floor, as long as now her own and her wife's. The small things like that made Arizona smile to herself.
She looked at the clock on the wall, and knew that Callie should be up any minute because she had to be at the hospital for a surgery by 5:30. So instead of climbing the stairs to shower and retire to her bed, she pushed the sliding door open to their kitchen and walked over to the coffee pot. She quickly started a fresh pot and pulled a coffee cup and a thermos down from the cabinet and moved over to the refrigerator. She pulled out a few things to make breakfast, hoping to sit down and have a little conversation with her wife. Just as she expected, she heard her wife's footsteps upstairs, signaling that she was awake.
Arizona flipped the omelet over in the pan and sipped on her orange juice just as her wife came walking into the kitchen.
"Mmm, something smells amazing. Especially the coffee. How long have you been home babe?" Callie asks while walking up to wrap her arms around her wife's waist and placing a soft kiss on her cheek.
"Good morning. I have been here for about 20 minutes. Thought we could have breakfast together before you head out. Hopefully the kids sleep in a little today. I had one hell of a night."
"Well how about you let me finish up here, and you run upstairs and put on something comfortable. At least for while we eat. You can shower after we eat." Callie says, and she doesn't receive any arguments from her wife. Arizona disappeared from the kitchen and returned a few moments later with a pair of shorts, a tank top, and her hair pulled up into a messy bun on the top of her head.
"Do you want to sit out on the deck? It feels amazing outside." Arizona suggests.
"Sure. You want to take the plates out? I'll grab our coffee and be right there."
The two women sat on their deck and enjoyed light conversation and the time seemed to fly by and before they knew it, Callie looked down at her watch and let sighed.
"As much as I am enjoying this, I better get going. I'm probably going to be late already, and I have that football player surgery today. The chief would kill me if I were late for this one. It's pulling in a ton of publicity for the place, and he is already pumping out interviews. He even wanted me to do a press conference but you know how I am about those. No way."
"I'm going to head up and shower, hopefully catch a few hours sleep before the kids get up. Text me later. And have a good day. I know you will rock that surgery."
"I will. See you this evening. I love you." Callie says, leaning over to give her wife a kiss and turning to walk into the house to get her bag and head to work.
Once Callie was off to work Arizona did exactly as she said. She took a quick shower, and threw on her pajamas before letting out a moan of pleasure as her body collapsed into their bed. It only took a matter of minutes before she was completely dead to the world. It wasn't until roughly 3 or 4 hours that she woke up to the sound of little whispers coming from the foot of her bed. Her eyes slowly opening, she let them adjust to the light that had been coming through the bedroom window. Cursing herself for the lightly colored curtains she had insisted on putting in their bedroom as it let in the morning sun much more than the ones Callie had suggested.
"Mommy we hungry." Hunter says, placing his hand on Arizona's face, giving her a big, dimpled smile.
"Do yall want to have turkey bacon and eggs, or cereal?"
All three kids agreed on cereal, and their mommy was perfectly happy with that. Usually Callie and Arizona were the type of parents that didn't allow their kids to have very much processed foods, or sugary cereals, but every now and then they would let the kids have a treat and cereal was one of those treats. 3 very happy and anxious Robbins kids disappeared from her sight and down the stairs in route to the kitchen.
Arizona threw her legs over the side of the bed and stretched her still tired muscles. Wishing she could have had a few more hours of sleep, but her children made the lack of sleep worth it. So she pushed herself up and walked towards the kitchen to make them breakfast. Once they were all silent and busy shoveling their cereal into their mouths, Arizona pulled out her laptop to check some emails she had been unable to check and listened to her kids talk about their night with their mama. Just listening to the way they carry on a conversation between one another made her kind of sad. It seems like time has just flown by and the kids were growing up entirely too fast.
Arizona was pulled from her daze as she heard the house phone ringing and excused herself from the table to answer it.
"Robbins residence. How may I help you?" Arizona says into the phone.
"Hey baby. You're up. How is it going?" Callie asks on the other end.
"It's fine. The kids are eating some cereal, and then I'm going to get them dressed and take them outside to play. It looks like it's going to be a nice day, and they have been cooped up in the house and daycare too much. A little playtime outside will do them some good. How did your surgery go?"
"Awesome. Of course. You are married to a rock star remember?"
"How could I forget? And what time will my rock star wife be home?"
"Well, that's what I was calling for actually. I might have to stick around a little longer. The chief doesn't want me leaving our high profile patient in the hands of an intern. But once things look good, I'll be out of here."
"That fine. I will have these rug rats bathed and in bed before you get home, and then maybe we can watch a movie in bed. I'll make sure to have dinner ready when you get here."
"Ok, tell the kids I love them, and I'll be home as soon as I can. I love you."
"Love you too Calliope. Bye."
Arizona hung up the phone and turned to face her now finished kids.
"Hey guys, mama has to work a little late, but she will be home as soon as she can. So how about we get dressed and head outside to play?" she suggests, quickly getting 3 smiles and cheers from her children. Quickly getting up they each placed their bowls in the dishwasher and ran as fast as possible up the stairs to get dressed for their day with the mommy.
Back and the hospital, Callie hung up the phone, and her eyes stayed looking at the picture that was here wallpaper. It was a photo of Arizona and the kids at the beach on their vacation. Her arms around all three kids, and 4 huge smiles on each of their faces. She ran her thumb across the screen, thinking to herself how beautiful her family is. Placing her phone in her pocket she let out a sigh, and picked up a chart. Silently telling herself that the sooner she got finished, the sooner she could join her family at home.
While she was adding the notes to the chart, one of the lab technicians came walking over to her.
"Dr. Robbins?" the man says nervously.
"Yes David? How may I help you? I don't remember ordering anymore tests this morning."
"Oh, these aren't for your patient. They actually belong to your wife. And since the nurses on the Peds floor tell me that she is off for the next few days, I figured I could give them to you and maybe you could pass them along. I know she would want these and probably have my head when she came back and found out we had the results for 3 days." the man said.
"I'm sorry, I'm confused. Arizona got her results the other day. What results could these possibly be for?" Callie asks, totally confused by this point.
"There was a problem with the computers the other day, and as embarrassing as it is, Dr. Robbins results were mixed up with another woman. We only found this out today, and I made sure to print these straight away."
"Ok. Well, things happen. But I do appreciate you bringing them to me so quickly. And I will take them home to her."
"Thanks Doctor. Have a good day." David says before turning and walking back towards the lab.
Callie placed the envelope in her lab coat, and proceeded to walk towards her patient for a final follow up. Her game plan was to head to her office afterwards and knock out all her charting so she could get out of the hospital in time to have some sort of evening with her wife left. Once inside of her office, she shut the door and kicked off her shoes before taking a seat at her desk. She had just taken off her lab coat and was fixing to toss it on the couch when she saw the envelope with Arizona's lab results in it. Instead of just opening it up like she wanted to, she decided to call her wife and see if she wanted her to open it. So for the second time, Callie picked up the phone and dialed the one to her home. An out of breath Arizona answered, and the sound of their children laughing and playing in the background made Callie smile.
"Hello?" Arizona says.
"Hey baby! Sounds like you guys are having a good time."
"They are wearing me out Calliope. I don't remember being this tired even after a long day of surgeries. Is everything okay? You rarely call twice during a shift." Arizona asks. "Not that I mind hearing your voice, because I don't."
"Everything is fine. I wanted to call you because David from lab came to find me today. He informed me that there had been a mix up in the lab, and your results were mixed up with another patient. I have the envelope with me, but I wanted to call you first." Callie explained.
"You didn't have to call me. You're my wife. Why would I mind you opening the letter? Go ahead and open it so you can read it to me." Arizona began. "Hunter, don't go down the slide head first. You could end up hitting your head son!" She yelled across the yard, causing Callie to laugh.
"Ok, let me see." Callie said while the sound of the envelope being torn open filled the receiver. Callie's eyes scanned over the numbers on the paper and suddenly she felt as if she was going to be sick to her stomach.
"Well? What does it say?" Arizona asks, anxious for the results.
"Arizona…"
"I can't get pregnant can I?"Arizona says, knowing that Callie would have read the results out loud and clear had it been good news.
"Baby we can try to—"Callie said, trying her best to keep her wife from doing what she does best. Closing every one off.
"No. No trying. If I were meant to have a baby, then I would be able to get pregnant. But no, I have to have a defective body that doesn't want to reproduce."
"Arizona. Stop."
"No Callie. It's fine. Really. Let's just drop it though. The kids are waiting for me to push them on the swings, so I will see you this evening." Arizona said. After quickly cutting Callie off, Arizona disconnected the other end of the line.
Callie sat there. Extremely confused as to why she was able to get pregnant so easily, but the way things looked, her beautiful wife would never be able to experience that. Glancing over the paperwork once more, she put the results back in the envelope and pulled her chart back out.
"Hey guys, why don't we wash up and head to that burger place we love so much. Maybe we could even take mama some food. I'm sure she would love that. What do you say?"Arizona asks her group of tiny humans.
It didn't take much convincing to get the kids inside to wash up and change. They were 'hospital babies', as their co-workers said. The kids spent as much time there as the surgeons did. They knew their way around the hospital better than some of the inters did and sometimes Callie and Arizona felt like horrible parents. And that feeling she had right now was enough to help her breeze through the rest of her day so she could join her family.
A little before 10:00pm, Callie entered the house to find It was silent. When she walked further into the house she noticed candles lit around the living room and a few along the staircase. Callie honestly wasn't expecting all of this. When he heard a n noise from the living room, she looked up and saw Arizona standing there, looking like a beautiful. Arizona gestured for Callie to join her in their bedroom.
Callie knew they needed to talk about the results. She knew that she needed to know how Arizona was feeling about all of this, but she knew that tomorrow would be another day, and that she planned to find out how Arizona really felt about this.
