song inspiration: Next In Line, by WALK THE MOON

The city grows smaller behind them, the blueish lights of smog and street lamps turning orange in the massive swarm of taillights. Blue snaps the mirror shut and curls up tighter in the little car, wishing they had seat-heaters. But it's an old car and a small car — it's a stick-shift; of course Green Oak knows how to drive a stick-shift but has never taken a selfie in his life — and the back windows are taped shut with duct tape and hope.

But she doesn't mind. Doing things this way she gets to snuggle up tighter into her borrowed sweatshirt and listen to the wind shoot by and she thinks she likes it so much better.

"You getting sleepy?" she asks, and Green shrugs without taking his eyes off the road. For a moment, she wants nothing more than to jerk his head towards her like she's done so many times before and get lost in his eyes, lights flickering within.

Of course, she refrains, because that's a really dumb impulse if she's ever had one — she's had plenty, thanks — but as soon as they pull over for the night, Blue will be free to act.

"No," her eloquent boyfriend replies, and she can't help but laugh over the low radio music. She remembers the road trip that she and Green and Red and Yellow all took that one summer, how it was always full-to-bursting with random foodstuff wrappers and laughter that spilled out the windows the same way she blew bubbles out over the freeway once before Green yanked her back in by her hood from beside her in the backseat.

This trip is nothing like that one; they actually have a destination this week and a schedule to boot, but she'll take it happily. Locked in a small space together with nothing more to amuse themselves than gossip and road-trip games? A decade ago, he would have looked her dead in the eyes and told her in no uncertain terms No.

She knows this to be true because it's happened over and over and over again.

But she is nothing if not determined, and so long as his No was about her choices and not her, she was in the clear. It was only a matter of time.

And she was right.

Of course.

She always is, especially when it comes to him.
