Bruce walked down the stairs of the Manor later that night once the police had left. Catwoman had escaped from the grounds, of course. He was furious; she was threatening his personal life now. His children were off limits to anyone. He walked straight to the cave to begin to review the camera footage and to do more research as to how Catwoman had entered the nursery. Mari thankfully had finally gone to sleep; he left Ella and Christian with her. Having them in one room together was easier to keep an eye on over night.
As Mari stirred, the sun began to rise over Gotham City. She could tell Bruce was still up. Natalie arrived to take the children so Mari quietly made her way down to the cave through the music room. She had directed Natalie to get the kids fed breakfast and to keep them in sight due to the break-in last night. She pulled her robe closer around her as the dampness of the cave made her cold. She walked to the elevator and saw him sitting in front of his computers.
He glanced and saw the elevator on the move. Alfred would have made some comments so he knew it was Mari coming to check on him. "Bruce, it's almost 7 in the morning. Did you get any sleep?" She asked as she walked closer.
He turned to face her, "No. I've been too busy trying to adjust the security system to protect you and the kids. She will NOT get as close to you as she did last night." As he said this, she saw his hand ball into a fist.
She gently put her hand on his. "Bruce, I love your determination to keep us safe. But I worry about the man underneath this force. He needs to take care of himself as well as his family. I know, I sound like Alfred. But in this case we are both right. She won't come around during the day. Why don't you come rest, sweetheart? Please?"
"Alright, but let me call Lucius first. There are a couple of meetings that will need to be covered since I'll be here."
"Go upstairs. I'll call Lucius. I'm sure once he knows what's going on he will understand completely that you need your rest." Bruce looked up from his seat and just held Mari's hand for a minute. He then walked with her back up to the manor. She sent him upstairs to rest and she called Lucius on the phone.
"Mr. Fox's office." His assistant Andi answered.
"Hi, Ms. Andi. It's Mrs. Wayne. Can I speak to Mr. Fox?"
"Of course, Mrs. Wayne. Hope to talk to you again soon." Mari heard a click and then waited for the next voice on the line.
"Lucius Fox."
"Mr. Fox, good morning."
"Mrs. Wayne, how are you feeling?"
"My strength is slowly coming back but my nerves are on edge after last night."
"What happened?"
"Catwoman broke into the Manor and threatened Christian. Thankfully, she was stopped but got to the door of the Master Suite where the kids and I were. Nancy and Dimitri protected us but Bruce was not home at the time."
"Did he sleep at all?"
"No, I'm just getting him from behind the computers now. He mentioned that there are a few meetings that will either need to be rescheduled or covered for him."
"I'll take care of it. Make sure he rests and give him and Alfred my best."
"I will, Lucius. Thank you very much for understanding."
"You are welcome, Mrs. Wayne. I hope to see you around the Tower again soon. Enjoy your day."
"I will. Good bye, Lucius." Mari said as she hung up the phone and turned to the stairs to return to her room to rest.
Several weeks later, Mari and Bruce were sleeping better. The security around the Manor had been changed to Bruce's satisfaction, Catwoman seemed to fade into the darkness and young Christian was sleeping quietly now in the nursery. Mari had started taking pieces of her busy schedule back on; Nancy was working closely with her and could tell when she started to get tired. They had been reviewing the activities of the Wayne Foundation for the past few weeks. Answering all of Mari's questions took Nancy and Mari's assistant at work, Mary, about four hours. Nancy could see that Mari was getting tired and needed her rest.
"Mary, I think we need to wrap this up for now." Nancy said.
"Getting to be too much for her, Nancy?" Mary asked through the speaker phone.
"Yeah."
"Okay. We can deal with anything else later. Don't want the boss's husband mad considering he controls the money strings around here." Mary joked.
"You know ladies, I am sitting right here." Mari said looking over to them.
"Understood, Mrs. Wayne." Mary said. "But you know that your husband only wants what is best for you. You told me yourself that Christian's birth took a lot more out of you then, Ella's. We are only trying let you rest, Anna."
"I am grateful for you two helping me so much. Just remember to include me in your conversations when I'm here, Okay?" Mari said to both of them.
"Got it, Mrs. Wayne." Nancy answered.
"Well, time to rest, talk to you later, Mary. See you later, Nancy." Mari said as she stood up and walked out of the morning room headed for the stairs.
Mari was walking through the Garden outside several weeks later. The Doctor had cleared her to go back to a full schedule and begin to exercise again. She was cooling down after going for a long walk in the gym and the cool breeze outside helped her relax. She heard a noise behind her and spun around quickly. Her senses were on alert until she heard a soft giggle come from behind a plant nearby. She snuck around the plant and surprised Ella who had snuck up on her. "Got you!" she called out as she tickled Ella's sides. Mari smiled as Ella laughed and screamed out. They both laughed and ended up in a hug. "What are you doing out here alone, sweetie?" Mari asked Ella.
"Alfred told me you were out here when I got home from playing. I wanted to surprise you Mommy." Ella said.
"Ok. How about we head back inside and check on your baby brother?" Mari said holding Ella's hand.
Mari was in her office later that day reviewing papers when Bruce returned home. He walked in as she looked up. He could tell by her face that she was concerned about something. "What's wrong, Mari?"
"I've been looking over these numbers and something's not right, Bruce. We raise plenty during the year to cover our expenses as well as fund the projects started but the fund for future projects is low. I'm not sure by how much but it seems as if there should be more there based on our recent fundraisers. Our new music in schools project needs $4.5 million to get started. We were close before the last fundraiser and now we are short again. This makes no sense. I've been searching the reports to see if I can figure out where we might be leaking money. I just can't find it here. I need to go to the Tower. I must be missing something here."
Bruce looked at her notes she had made and the papers in front of her. "You're right. This is odd. Where did the funds all go? The last fundraiser should have cleared the mark needed to start the new project. Why don't we go over these all together tomorrow? I'll get Lucius to help us. Maybe he'll find what we are missing."
"I'd hate to think that someone could be taking money. But I don't see where the money might be going. I can't figure it out."
"We'll sit down with everything tomorrow, I promise. We'll find the leak, Mari. But we can't do it tonight or from here, OK?" Bruce said looking at her.
Mari looked up at him and answered, "Alright. I just hate not knowing. Legacies and the work of the Foundation that helps so many people is at stake. How could someone steal that away?"
"I don't know, Mari, but we'll figure it out." Bruce said pulling her away from her desk and out of the room.
Several days later Bruce, Mari, Nancy, Mary, Lucius and David, an accountant with Wayne Enterprises had gathered in the Foundation's conference room and had papers lain out all over the table. Mari sat at one end of the table and held her head in her hands. Bruce stood and went to Mari and placed his hands on her shoulders. "We'll figure this out, Mari."
As she looked down the table, David's eyes suddenly got large. "I've got it. I've found where the missing money is." He said. Mari sprung up as she and Bruce walked to David.
"Where?" Mari asked.
"It's here in the foundation accounts, Mrs. Wayne. It looks as if someone diverted funds into a spending account instead of sending them to the legacy account like they should have been."
"How could that have happened? I have only authorized things to be spent out of the legacy account or directed deposits there so our music programs could start. Who had the power to redirect the funds like that?" Mari said looking to Bruce. Bruce looked from her to Lucius not sure of the answer.
"I am not sure either, Mrs. Wayne, but with a little research and following the paper trail that these deposits would have left behind I am sure we will discover this quickly." Lucius said as he stood to look at the paperwork David had in front of him.
