The next morning Mike got up and got ready to head to the gym. He stepped out of his apartment the same time Ryann's door opened and Phil stepped out with his shirt in his hands. He looked at him for a minute and then headed out. He really didn't want to talk to him and he was trying not to think about Phil and Ryann together. Phil smiled to himself as he slipped his shirt on and stood waiting for the elevator. They both stepped on and rode it down to the ground floor.
Mike got into his car and drove to John and Melody's. He figured they could go to the concert. And Alden would enjoy the candy. He knocked on the door and Melody opened it with a smile. But the smile quickly faded when she saw Mike's somber expression
"What's wrong?" She asked him.
"I have two tickets to a concert. I thought you and John could go." He said walking in. "And I have flowers for you and candy for Alden."
"What's going on?"
He sighed deeply. "I went to her apartment last night to ask her about going to the concert and he answered the door. It was obvious what they'd been doing. He even told me she was in bed. I told him to tell her I stopped by. He walked out this morning with his t shirt in his hands and this smug ass smirk on his face that I just wanted to beat off of him." Mike looked at her. "I'm losing her Mel. I'm losing her and it's my own damn fault."
She sighed and hugged him. "You haven't lost anything yet." She said to him. "I believe you and Ryann will end up together. I just know it."
He laughed bitterly. "I wish I could believe that."
She sighed. "I'm sure it will work out like it should."
"Yeah." He said to her. "Well, here is the flowers and candy and the tickets. I'm heading to the gym."
"Alright. Thanks." She said hugging him. He nodded and walked out. She pick up her purse and headed out. She was going to talk to Ryann. Alden was spending the day with John before he left out for the road.
She pulled up in front of the bakery and walked inside. She saw Ryann behind the counter and walked over. "Hey, Ryann. How are you?" She asked.
"Doing pretty good. How are you?"
"I'm good." She smiled. "Can I get a Mocha and a chocolate chip muffin please? And I would like to talk to you. If you have time."
"Yeah, give me just a second." Melody nodded and took a seat at a table by the window. She just had to know what Ryann was thinking. Even though John told her not to get involved, she had too. She smiled at Ryann as she brought the muffin and coffee over a few minutes later and sat down.
"Not that I don't like seeing you but you seem like you have something on your mind. What's up?"
"Mike came to see me today." She said before taking a sip of coffee. "He wanted to give me and Alden some gifts."
"That was nice of him."
"They were originally meant for you. He came by your place last night to give them to you while Phil was there.
"He didn't come to my place last night. The only person who came was a salesman." Ryann replied.
Melody took out the tickets and the note that was with the flowers. "He got you both tickets to a concert. And he hoped you would go with him." She said handing them to Ryann. "He did come by last night but Phil said you guys were busy."
"This doesn't make any sense. Why would Phil lie to me about who was at the door?"
"I honestly don't know." Melody replied. "I just wanted to talk to you. John says I shouldn't meddle but you need all the facts. As for the reason Phil lied, I don't know. But you should ask him."
Ryann nodded. "I appreciate you telling me. I'll get to the bottom of this."
"I just thought you should know." Melody said as she got up. "Call me and Jamie and we can all go shopping or something."
Ryann smiled. "Sounds good. I mean Alden has a birthday coming up doesn't she?" Melody smiled.
"How did you know that?"
"Mike told me when her birthday was. I never forgot. I'll make her cake. Free of charge." Melody smiled again.
"You're an amazing person and you deserve to be happy. I'll call you tomorrow." Ryann nodded as Melody left.
She picked up her phone and called Phil. She had to know why he didn't tell her it was Mike at the door. She left him a message and then she called Mike and hoped her answered.
Mike saw the name come up on the Caller ID. He sighed because he wasn't sure he wanted to talk. But he decided to anyway. "Hello?"
"Hey..I was hoping you could come by tonight. I'll make dinner and we'll talk." She said. "I'll even bring some red Velvet cupcakes home for dessert."
He sighed. He knew she was going to tell that she had chosen Phil and she was cooking dinner and having his favorite cupcakes to cushion the blow. "Yeah, I can come by." He replied. He figured he might as well get it over with.
"Great. Around 8?"
"I'll be there." He said to her.
"See you then." She said hanging up.
Mike sighed when he hung up. He had lost her and now she was going to tell him she wanted Phil. He looked at the clock. He still had a few hours before he had to get ready to go. And he decided that he'd try to sleep since he hadn't slept much the night before.
Ryann left the bakery and headed home. She had hoped Phil would call her. But he hadn't yet. She sighed to herself and closed up and headed home. Once she was there, she started cooking for Mike. She really hoped he showed up and they could talk over dinner.
Mike looked in the mirror as he got dressed. What exactly did you wear to a dinner where the girl you were in love was going to tell you that she wanted the other guy and you had ruined what you might have had. He took one last look and headed over to Ryann's. No sense in putting it off for either of them.
He was about to knock on the door when he heard raised voices from inside. "You should have just told me the truth."
"I didn't really think it was important and I didn't want to interrupt our evening."
"You still should have told me. You didn't have to lie about it."
"I'm sorry okay? Can we just...can we get over this? Act like it never happened?"
"You want me to just forget that you lied to me? I can't do that. I think it's best if we spend a few days apart. And I think you should go. Mike will be here for dinner any minute."
"Mike?" Phil said. "Why are you having him over?"
"Because I like him and I enjoy his company. And because I'm still technically dating you both." She said to him. "Now you should go."
"Right." He replied. "Well, I will leave you to your date." He opened the door looked at Mike before he walked away.
Mike looked at Ryann. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I didn't think I was early."
"No, you're right on time. Please come in." He nodded and walked in. "Thanks for coming."
"It's not a problem." He replied. "So, what did you want to talk about?"
"That's what I love about you Mike, you always cut right to the chase."
"Well, I figured there was no need to draw it out." He said to her. "So, let's have dinner and you can just tell me that you want to be with Phil. And we can get it over with."
She stopped and looked at him. "Is that what you think this was all about? That I planned this dinner to somehow let you down gently that I hadn't chosen you?"
"Yes." He replied. "And I think it's nice that you want to make me dinner first. It's very thoughtful of you."
"It is thoughtful of me but that's not why I asked you to dinner."
"It's not?" He asked. "So why did you then?"
"To apologize for Phil and to spend some time with you."
"Apologize for Phil?" He asked. "Why would you need to do that?"
"Because he didn't tell me that you stopped by last night with the flowers and the concert tickets."
"Oh." Mike replied. "I didn't realize he didn't tell you."
"Well he didn't. And I would have gone with you."
"That's nice to know but I already gave the tickets to John and Melody." He replied. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry Phil didn't tell you I came by."
She walked over to him and kissed him. "Stop apologizing. This time you didn't do anything wrong. Now, you know where the bathroom is, go wash your hands and I'll have dinner finished and on the table in a few minutes."
He nodded and headed into the bathroom. He smiled as he did. Maybe he had misread things and he still had a chance with her. He certainly hoped so.
