Ch. 26: Informing
Paul sighed as he got out of bed. One month. It had been one month since Lizzie had been unconscious and Orion Pax was with the Decepticons. Thanks to his company and the supplies that both agent Fowler and nurse Darby had been able to get supplies to keep Lizzie alive in her coma state. This day, though, he was doing something that he had put off for the longest time. He was going to inform the bots on the Harbinger about Lizzie. He had been holding off in hopes that she would wake up but, now that it had been a month, it was time for them to know.
"I really don't want to do this alone." Paul muttered to himself as he got ready. But, if he wasn't going alone, then he would have Lizzie with him and he wouldn't have to go and do this in the first place.
As he cooked breakfast, Paul suddenly was waiting for Lizzie to come bounding down the stairs. He had become so accustomed to waiting for Lizzie that his morning routine almost depended on her coming down for breakfast that he cooked.
"Frag it. Why did she have to get hurt? I don't understand." Paul grumbled.
As he ate his breakfast, he wondered about why this was happening. Since they were changing things, Primus could not confidently tell the future and that meant that he was just as blind as most were. He would see possible snippets at most but, besides that, there wasn't much to tell.
Once he finished, he cleaned up before heading to the car. Getting in, he felt a wave of sadness hit him. Being in this car just reminded him of Lizzie and how she had been so excited about being able to drive this against Knockout for the races. It had made him happy that she was enjoying this.
"Well, I might as well go get this over with." Paul sighed before pulling out of the drive and heading out to the Harbinger. He had told the Autobots that he was going to be taking the day off since they had picked him up each day to go and check on Lizzie and stay by her until she woke up.
Glancing up at the sky, Paul saw that the moon was shining. Again, the moon made him think of Lizzie. It shined brightly and, as she said, it had a nice glow to it. It wasn't like the sun that glared at you. The moon caressed you and that made it more comforting. When Lizzie woke up, Paul decided that he would take her to the moon, no matter how what he had to do to get the necessary equipment. She had said it was her dream to go to the moon and he was going to make that possible.
When he drove up to the Harbinger, Paul had a sense of guilt wash over him. He should have told them earlier that this had happened. But, he had so wanted Lizzie to wake up that he had held it off. Hopefully the bots would forgive him.
When he drove past the entry door, Jazz pulled up in his alt mode next to him. Jazz was a sleek sports car because Jazz wouldn't have anything else.
"Hey Paul, didn't expect you here today. Do you have Lizzie with you?" Jazz asked over the radio.
The mention of Lizzie had Paul flinch. She was the reason he was there but it wasn't good news at all. He wasn't sure how the others would take it. "Have the others meet us on the bridge. I have something I need to tell you." He didn't answer the part about Lizzie because he felt like he would only be able to say it once before he broke down. Everywhere he went it seemed like he was constantly reminded of her.
"Alright man. But, I hope everything is okay." Jazz said before the line went quiet. Paul figured that he was calling the others.
Paul gave the cyber-ninja a few minutes to talk to the others before he asked, "Jazz, I see that the ship is looking great. How much longer do you think it will take for the ship to be completed?"
"Well, things are going smoothly and on schedule. If we continue this was, we should have it done within the time period you and Lizzie set for us. Prowl's been making sure we all stay in line. I swear he likes this working and being the one in charge way too much. He wouldn't even let me have a party. Not a single one. He says that we have to stay on task and can't get distracted." The smile in Jazz's voice cut into Paul even deeper. He was here with news that would cut into their good mood like a chainsaw into ice. It was going to hurt.
When they pulled into the bridge, Paul saw that the others were standing there and waiting. Paul knew that the time to tell them was coming and he was dreading it. It almost made him wish that he was going to be fighting his brother instead of doing this. But, they needed to know about Lizzie.
"So Paul, why are you here?" Prowl asked as Paul got out of the car.
Paul sighed. "I've been keeping you bots in the dark about something. Something important."
"What?" Lockdown asked with a raised optic ridge.
Paul let out a shaky breath. Frag it he was a deity and yet he felt nervous about saying this. Of course, Lizzie seemed to make people become attached to her after their first meeting. "A little more than a month ago, Lizzie was attacked."
"What?" They all yelled.
"By who?" Blaster asked.
Paul put a hand to his head before saying, "She was changing out of that dress that I sent you a picture of. Well, once she was changed, she and Cliffjumper went to meet up with Bumblebee and Raf, I told you about them, to race. But," Paul then hesitated. This part of the story was hard when he heard it from Cliffjumper and it was hard retelling it to them. "but Megatron came across their paths. Lizzie and Cliffjumper distracted Megatron while Bumblebee went and got Raf out of there. Lizzie didn't want Raf to get hurt I guess. Well, Cliffjumper could only dodge for so long and they were hit with a dark energon blast. Lizzie must have been hit with a decent amount of the blast because she went unconscious almost immediately after according to what Cliffjumper told me."
"Is she...offline?" Eject asked quietly.
Thankfully, Paul could shake his head at that. "No. Thankfully, Ratchet helped her get the dark energon out of her system. But, she hasn't woken up yet. She is currently in a human form of stasis lock, called a coma, and we don't know when, or even if, she will ever wake up for it."
The quiet that filled the air after that was hard for Paul to handle. But, he knew he had to. It was only fair since he did not tell them until now about Lizzie's condition. The looks on their faceplates, though, was very hard. They each looked stricken immensely. Lizzie had really made an impression on them. The worst by far was Lockdown though. He and Lizzie were a lot alike. Neither could take a side in the war and hated it how Cybertron had been ruined because of it.
"Why didn't you tell us about this earlier?" Landmine asked.
Paul sighed. "Well, one reason was because I was hoping that Lizzie would have woke up by now and so I waited until I was certain that she wasn't. I didn't want to have to burden you all. It is already adding to the stress back at base. The base is stressful enough because, to save the Earth from Unicron, Optimus gave up the energy in the Matrix to put Unicron into stasis. But, that came at a cost. He lost his memories from his time as a Prime and Megatron now has Orion Pax, who thinks Megatron is Megatronus, that the Autobots are the aggressors and that it was Ratchet who started the war and is the war lord."
"When I get my servos on that fragger I am going to beat him to a pulp." Landmine said while smashing his fists together. The others had similar angry looks that were obviously directed toward Megatron.
While Paul could understand the angry looks, he couldn't have them doing anything too harsh. "You bots can't go after Megatron now."
"Why?" Prowl asked. It was strange to see the usually passive cyber-ninja so angry.
Paul sighed. This time though, it was slightly out of annoyance and the fact that the normally thinking Prowl was not thinking. "Because, Lizzie wanted this ship finished top priority and that means that every available minute needs to be spent working on this. Now, do you want to waste time in trying to avenge her by going after Megatron now or do you want to follow her wish and keep working on this ship so it will be completed on time? This ship, the Harbinger, is going to play a major role later on and we need it at full working capacity. That means that no time can be wasted."
He knew it was a harsh reminder but he couldn't have them going after Megatron, no matter how much he wanted them too. The ship needed to be repaired in time. Also, events needed to play out correctly for now if he was going to hold onto any chance that Lizzie was going to wake up.
A sigh coming from Prowl had Paul looking up. "You are correct. Our time would be better spent working on this ship, like Lizzie wanted, rather than going to fight Megatron."
Paul smiled at them and said, "Don't worry. She will wake up. We just have to wait it out. But, I swear that you will all be able to have your chance at Megatron for this. Plus, once she wakes up, I'll bring her here to see you all. She as missing you before this happened and I doubt that will have changed once she wakes up."
Jazz smiled and said, "And I can throw her a party!"
Prowl looked like he was going to argue but hesitated before saying, "One party. For Lizzie. That's it."
The bots around then cheered and Paul was glad that they were hopeful for Lizzie waking up. It made his own hope for that even to happen increase. Lizzie was going to have such a welcome back party that it was going to surprise her. Plus, she would finally be able to witness one of the infamous Jazz parties that were told about in fan fictions...Yes, Paul had read been reading more and more of them in his off time away from base to help him keep hope. While he mainly read Lizzie's stories that she adopted out, he had read a few others and found it odd how accurate the writers had been when they talked about Jazz's parties, for the most part. Some of the stuff was a little too crazy, even for him, but most of it was usually spot on.
A phone went off saying that there was a text. But, it wasn't his phone. It was Lizzie's. He kept it with him so she could have it once she woke up and didn't accidentally brake it if she rolled over or something else happened.
"Hey Lizzie. Haven't heard from you in a while. Do you think you can come out for a race.-K.O."
Crap. Paul figured that Knockout must not know that Lizzie was unconscious. That meant that he had to tell the bot. Looking at the bots around him, he said, "Hey, I have to go do something. It just came up and it needs my attention immediately. Can one of you help me down?"
They nodded and Lockdown helped Paul to the ground. "Hey, keep us up to date with Lizzie, alright?" Lockdown asked as Paul walked to his car.
Paul nodded and said, "You bet. Talk to you all later." He then got in before leaving.
To say that he was excited about talking to Knockout was like saying that a kid who didn't like history was excited to go to history class. He didn't hate Knockout as much but he wasn't going to be happy to tell the bot the news. Knockout was one of his children after all. But, he was a little crazy about things, like his finish, and Paul wasn't sure how he would take that.
Using a little bit of his god magic crap, as Lizzie once called it, Paul had the phone send a text to Knockout. "This is Lizzie's boss, Paul. I need you to meet me immediately at these coordinates. I need to talk to you about Lizzie. Something has happened." He then drove off of the road and parked in an outcrop. He knew it wouldn't take long for Knockout to arrive.
The sound of a ground bridge powering up next to him had Paul stop the car and get out. Knockout was soon clear of the bridge and did something that Paul was not expecting. The red mech stooped down and picked him up before anything could be said. "What has happened human?"
Paul was surprised that Knockout looked so angry. He could feel the anger ebbing off of the medic's plating and could see that the red mech's optics were narrowed in anger. Thankfully, though, Knockout knew how to handle humans from Lizzie and wasn't squeezing yet. "Neither I nor the Autobots are to blame. It is actually the fault of your leader. She fired upon Cliffjumper not too long after she sent you that picture, about a half hour to forty five minutes later, and she was hit with a dark energon blast. Thankfully, Ratchet was able to get the dark energon out of her. She has been unconscious for just over a month now."
Knockout stared at him in shock. "You aren't lying, are you?"
Paul shook his head. "No."
Knockout sat down on the ground and loosened his grip. Paul took the chance to sit on the mechs hand so he could listen to Knockout for the mech looked like he was going to say something. "You now, Lizzie is a pretty awesome human. Not saying that humanity is like her. She is the exception. She appreciates my finish and the amount of time that it takes to make it look this good. It's strange that she is out for a while."
The 'for a while' did not go unnoticed by Paul. That meant that Knockout already knew that there was hope that Lizzie would wake up. "So, how are things going on the ship with Orion?" He figured that he would call Optimus by his name he was using now.
Knockout seemed startled by the question before saying, "Well he seems like a nervous ninny but Megatron keeps him pretty much locked in a room trying to decode the Iacon database. How are things with the Autobots?"
A sigh escaped Paul's lips before he said, "Stressed. They are starting to lose it without Optimus there. Plus, with the added worry of Lizzie's condition is just making everyone crazy. I'll give it about another month before one of them goes a little crazy." And that was how he felt. The pressure at base was much larger than in the show and he wasn't too confident in their ability to keep it together without Optimus.
Knockout hummed a little before saying, "That is what Megatron assumed would happen. He's hoping that they destroy themselves before Orion starts to question his motives and ways." He then set Paul down. "I have to get back. I sent a video to Lizzie's phone that she asked me for earlier. It was pretty funny to watch." Paul nodded and was about to get in his vehicle when Knockout stopped him. "Hey, Paul, tell me when Lizzie wakes up, will you? I want to get in another race with her."
Paul figured that he could do that much for the mech. So, he nodded. "Sure. I'll have her text you when she gets up." He then gave Knockout a nod in goodbye before driving home.
Once he was inside the house with a chicken pot pie on a T.V. tray in front of him, Paul connected Lizzie's phone to the television and hit play on the video Knockout sent. He smiled when he saw that it was of the fight between Soundwave and Airachnid. Lizzie was going to love watching this when she woke up.
Lizzie: I don't want to be blocked again.
