Note: Okay I ended up splitting this chapter between Mabel and the other Pines, but frankly I think it will work out better this way…hope you enjoy
Please review and I own nothing etc
She had been so excited to see the unicorn that she hadn't even thought about her 'condition' the whole day. It had been a nice reprieve, though she hadn't planned on it instead reemerging with a vengeance. All she could think about was how happy she was to meet a real, live unicorn. Then it scanned her heart.
"Not pure of heart!" it whinnied.
"What?!"
"A unicorn can see deep inside your heart, child, and you are far from pure!"
"You can see into my heart….?" Mabel bit her lip, fidgeting with her fingers.
She hadn't really put much thought into who Dipper kept going on about how they weren't human anymore, she hadn't found it that important. After all, no matter what she was she was still the same person at heart, right? But, then again, Dipper hadn't quite been the same person since all this had happened, had he? She had witnessed that herself, had seen her twin caught up in a fervor of anger and madness, and worse yet enjoy every second of it. But that wasn't his fault, right? He had been turned into a demon and-...and so had she…
Was it then that she was….she was like that now too? Had she just not done it yet? Anything called a 'demon' couldn't possibly be pure of heart, could it?
"Now, be off! Come back when you're pure of heart!"
"Up yours, you judgmental hoofbag! Mabel's a straight up saint!" Wendy shared a lewd handgesture with the equine.
"No- Wendy, it's okay." Mabel hugged herself. "Let's come back later."
The usually chipper girl left with her head hung, her friends following behind her. Mabel mulled over the events of the summer, particularly after she had agreed to Bill's terms. Had she changed? Was she different? Was she….bad? No, she didn't think so but- but wait, at the party she had been thinking 'bad' and when Ford came back and…
"Don't let what that stupid horse said get to you, Mabel." Wendy said, putting a hand on her shoulder. "You shouldn't trust a horse that wears makeup."
"But…"
"Hey, you two." Wendy addressed Mabel's friends. "Gimme a second to talk to her by myself, okay?"
"Uh…sure, Wendy!" Grenda nodded.
"We will be right over here, when you're done." Candy concurred, leaving with the larger girl.
Mabel frowned, watching them leave and then going to address Wendy. The redhead spoke first.
"Mabel, look…you know I know, right?" Wendy knelt down to Mabel's level, scanning the tween's face. "About the triangle guy dragging you into the situation with Dipper, what happened at the mansion, you know I know about it, right?"
Mabel flinched.
"W- what? How did you-? I mean yeah you knew about Dipper and Bill but-" Mabel blurted, ringing her hands.
"Soos." Wendy smirked gently and gave an affectionate roll of the eyes. "After Mr. Pines' brother showed up and you were all laying your cards on the table, Soos called me right after and told me everything. He was sitting right by the window and all."
Mabel sighed and hung her head again, hugging her arms tightly to her body.
"Oh…" she mumbled.
"So, yeah, if you wanna talk about whatever's on your mind right now, I'll understand. Well, I mean," she frowned, scratching her head. "Like I won't understand on a personal level but I should understand enough to make you feel a little better at least, y'know?"
Mabel hesitated and Wendy waited patiently for her younger friend to make up her mind. The budding demoness stared at her wrist, gripping her fingers around it. Light and stardust had streamed from her being at that point, flowing out like it was her own blood- maybe it was? Was that her blood like that? Was that her blood like she was now? She looked normal, she felt normal- for the most part- but did that mean anything anymore? Wasn't it, in the end, just an illusion like Bill himself was so happy making time and time again?
"Hey, Mabel? Are you okay?"
She felt Wendy's hand back on her shoulder and forced herself to take a deep breath.
"I- what if the unicorn's right, Wendy?" she bit her lip. "What if I'm…what if I can't be pure of heart because I'm not human anymore?!"
Her eyes began to brim with tears and Wendy shook her head, attempting to calm her.
"Hey, hey, don't listen to what that stupid horse said, okay?" Wendy smiled gently. "Just-"
"But I'm a demon!" Mabel blurted, tears slipping loose. "I'm a monster thing just like Bill! Well okay, not a monster maybe because a lot of monsters are actually pretty nice but- but a demon!? Wendy that word's only for evil things, right?! Am I evil!? Am I bad?!"
"It's just a word, Mabel." Wendy said more firmly. "It doesn't mean jacksquat about who you are, it's just 'what' you are, and that's nothing anyone can control, right?"
"But-"
"Mabel." Wendy cut her off, locking eyes with her. "Look at me. You are a good person, you always have been and you always will be, no matter what happens. Okay? You are."
Mabel shut her eyes tight, rubbing them with her sleeve to dry her face. After a few shuddery deep breathes she rose her head again and nodded.
"Okay. If you think I am, Wendy, I guess I can't be too bad, right?" she cracked a smile that was
a shadow of her usual grin. "I'll prove it, I'll do so many good deeds that unicorn will have to say I've got a pure heart!"
"That's the spirit, kid," Wendy ruffled her hair. "C'mon, let's get to it."
Wendy walked off and Mabel trailed behind, pausing a moment to glance at her sleeve. It was stained a bit with her tears, tears that had swirls of stardust in them. Mabel clenched her jaw and hurried after Wendy.
Dipper winced, groaning as he woke to the world. The first face he saw was Stan's, his grunkle smiling a bit despite his obvious worried expression.
"Heya, kiddo. You better now?"
The boy grimaced, turning onto his side and holding his head.
"Owww….."
"Honestly I'm surprised that worked, I suppose he is still at least partly human-"
"How about you shut up a second, Sixer?"
Dipper tried to curl up and noted his limbs were longer than usual. Oh. He must've changed again- wait, why did he change? Why was he sleeping? What happened before-…oh. OH.
…Frick.
"Grunkle Ford-!" he jolted upright so quickly he saw stars. "I- ah-! Ow ow-"
"Easy there kid," Stan gently pushed him back down on the mattress. "Don't push it."
"But- I- Grunkle Ford I'm so sorry-"
The aging researcher shook his head, his brow furrowed with his frown.
"You panicked. I should have told you about my past history with Bill but…well, honestly I wasn't certain it was a good idea." Ford crossed his arms, contemplating his actions.
"It's okay, kid, I was freaking out a bit too," Stan smiled, ruffling Dipper's hair affectionately.
Dipper grimaced a bit, slightly embarrassed by the gesture but shifted his focus to regaining his normal body. His grunkles seemed larger abruptly as he became smaller.
"You're gettin' pretty good at that." Stan smirked a little. "How are you feeling, kiddo?"
"My head hurts…"
"Er, yeah, sorry about that."
"I'm still amazed that actually worked-"
"Shut up, Sixer."
Ford sent him a dirty look which Stan pointedly ignored, getting to his feet.
"I'll get you something for your head, Dipper. Be right back."
He walked into the bathroom and began rummaging in the mirror-cabinet for some painkillers, pondering what else the boy might need. Once satisfied with his selection he closed the mirror shut with a click.
Then promptly dropped the bottle in the sink.
His right eye was dimly glowing yellow, his iris and pupil replaced with a dark slit.
"What the hell?!" he blurted.
He leaned in close to the mirror, examining his eye as the color left his face.
Remember, Stanley, this is all your fault
The eye erupted in blue flames and Stan clutched it, biting down to stifle a scream.
