ROBIN'S POV
Maria was quite unconscious as I checked her over. Her heart was still beating and she was still breathing, which was a good sign. Magic is unpredictable though, so we all knew she could either wake up within an hour, or she may never wake up at all. As soon as Loveday was untied, she immediately ran back to the castle with her husband to get some horses for us all. When they arrived with the horses, I mounted myself and then pulled Maria up across me.
"Robin, maybe one of us should take Maria." Loveday said as she hopped up on her horse and pulled on the reins.
"I've got her." I said quickly and confidently. I put my arm around her and pulled her closer to my body to keep her warm; her skin was as cold as ice within minutes. The horses trotted forward and we all headed towards Moonacre Manor. Cody's horse trotted up beside me and he looked down at Maria.
"I'm really sorry, Robin. I really wish any of this hadn't happened." He said. It made me feel better to know that he was really under a spell the entire time, and not doing it all on purpose.
"You really had no idea what you were doing?" I asked him as I slowed my horse down to meet his pace.
"No. Most of it is a daze. When I could sense what to do next, I would just go into this dreamy state. I had no control over myself at all." He explained. Mrs. Heliotrope and Marmaduke ran outside of the manor to greet us, asking various questions of what had happened. I took Maria in my arms and got off the horse. Up the tower steps I went and through her tiny bedroom door. The ceiling was lit up with mounds of stars. She moaned a bit as I sat her down, but besides that, there was no response from her.
I stayed beside her bed, only frequently getting up to eat and go to the bathroom. Benjamin and Loveday spent most of their time reading through books, trying to find any clue on how to wake up Maria. Every once in a while they would bring me a book, as well, just to make sure they weren't missing anything.
"Robin, you really need to get some rest. She's probably not going to wake up any time soon, and it will take time before we find anything. Go ahead and take one of the horses and go home. Father has already gone back himself." Loveday said as she came up into the room with a candle that next night. I was already half asleep at the time.
"Go home? At a time like this? Loveday you aren't serious." I told her. How could I go home now?
"Robin nothing is going to change from the time you leave to the time you come back. She will still be laying there and still asleep unless we find a miracle." She said. I looked over at the red-haired girl, who had somehow seemed to lose her fire. I refused to go home. In case something did happen I wanted to be around when it did, so I decided to take up residence in a guest room on the second floor. My father had sent Cody back to the manor with some of my clothes and supplies.
"Still no change yet?" He asked as he came into my room to give me my clothes.
"No, and it doesn't look like there will be unless we can find some way to get through to her. She's alive, just in a deep sleep where nothing can wake her up. We tried sending for a doctor, but since this is magic related there was nothing he could do." I explained as I took the bag from him.
"And the books say nothing about it?" He asked. I put the bag over on a chair, and he sat down on the bench in front of the bed.
"We are all still looking. The ones we have checked say absolutely nothing about it. I guess no one ever thought about destroying the pearls so they didn't know what would happen if they did." I said.
"She will wake up soon enough. I just know it, Robin. I will go back to my mother's house and she if she had anything that might help." He said. With that last word, he was gone. I went back up to Maria's tower and found Loveday now occupying the chair.
"Someone needs to take their own advice." I said as I walked in the room. She jerked upwards and looked at me with a smile on her face.
"You needn't worry, Robin. I am not sleepy, just a little run down from all of the shock." She said.
"Dear sister, I did not say I was worried." I said with a laugh. I sat down on the side of Maria's bed and placed my hand on her cheek. Her temperature was not much warmer, and still not even close to normal.
"Well, thank you for being such a supportive brother then. If you will excuse me I think I will join my husband downstairs." She said. I nodded, and looked back down at Maria, where my smile disappeared.
"She will be alright, Robin. Just have a little bit of faith." She said as she placed one hand on my shoulder.
"I will try." I replied. I wanted so desperately to believe her. Loveday headed off to bed, and I started to go myself. There was one last thing I had to do though, something I didn't get to pay back to Maria before she went into this sleep. I bent down slowly and kissed her. Her lips were still ice cold, but I didn't care. With that, I went back to my room and fell into a deep sleep, and in my dreams, she was awake and alive with energy.
