Chapter 27: Surprises
*CLARY'S P.O.V.*
I wake up to the sound of rain pounding off the roof. My eyes flutter open and I see rain lashing out of the sky, through the window. It's certainly the weather to be cuddled up in bed. I feel a swift kick from Jack and smile.
"Hey baby, I felt that, I don't know if it was aimed at mommy's ribs or daddy's hand but you got mommy's ribs." I whisper. I hear Jace chuckle lightly and rub my belly. I turn around so I'm facing him and smile at him.
"Morning." He whispers.
"Morning." I say and kiss him.
"Looks like we got a good day for our how I met your mother marathon." Jace says.
"Yeah, I texted mom last night and asked her to bring the DVD's over, she said she would and that her dad would be coming over here at around 1." I say.
"Well its 12 now so how's about I make us some breakfast and we can have breakfast in bed." Jace says. I smile, that would be ideal.
"That sounds great." I say.
"Alright, I'll be back in a minute, is there anything you're craving that you want for breakfast?" Jace asks. For once I'm not craving anything.
"No, not right now anyway." I say.
"Alright I'll be back in a few minutes." He says and softly kisses me.
A few minutes later there's a soft knock on the door and Alec comes in. He smiles softly at me. I smile back and he comes over and sits beside me.
"Hey." I say.
"Hey, how are feeling?" He asks.
"Achy but better than yesterday." I say.
"Good, I was really worried about you; I Just had to come and check up on you." Alec says. I smile at how brotherly he is.
"I think Jack misses his uncle Alec, the second he heard your voice he went crazy in my belly." I say, taking his hand and placing it on my belly. Alec smiles. I suddenly feel a pain stab my back. I gasp in pain and sit forward.
"Clary, what's wrong?" He asks placing his hand on my back.
"My back really hurts." I say. Alec picks a few pillows up from the end of the bed and arranges them in a pile behind me.
"Here sit back; do you need some pain killers or anything?" He asks, helping me lean back against the pillows.
"No, I'll be ok in a minute, thanks though." I say. Alec nods. "So have you and Magnus made any plans for the wedding yet?" I ask.
"No not yet, we're going over to the institute later and mom's going to help us plan some things." Alec says. I nod.
"I'm really happy for you and Magnus." I say. Alec smiles.
"Thanks Clare." He says. I smile. "I've gotta go, I'll be back later." Alec says.
"Ok, I love you." I say. Alec smiles and kisses my temple.
"I love you too." He says and leaves.
I relax my head back into the mountain of pillows and rub my belly. I slept all night but I'm still exhausted. Suddenly the door opens and Jace walks in carrying a tray. The smell of pancakes fills the air and I realise how hungry I am.
"Mmm Jace it smells amazing!" I say as he sits beside me.
"You're about the only one who likes my cooking." He says .
"Aw, Jack likes your cooking too." I say. Jace smiles and kisses me. I see Jace has put chocolate syrup, whipped cream and strawberry's on my pancakes. I smile, he knows me too well.
"Oh thank you so much!" I say as he hands me my plate. Jace smiles.
"Do you want to use the tray to put your plate on?" Jace asks.
"No it's ok, I've learned a trick or two since my belly got really big." I say and place my plate on my belly. Jace laughs.
"This is one of the many reasons I love you." He says leaning over and kissing me.
"Why, because I use my bump as a table?" I ask. Jace chuckles.
"No, because you never fail to make me laugh or smile, and I love your smile, and I love you." He says. Aw, my Jace is too sweet.
"Aw, I love you too." I say and kiss him.
*An hour later*
I groan as Jack kicks my kidneys, making me feel like they're about to explode.
"Jace!" I call. He walks into the room and closes the door.
"You two ok?" He asks sitting beside me.
"Make your son stop kicking my kidneys, it hurts!" I say. Jace frowns and pushes up my top. He bends his head to my belly and kisses it.
"Hey buddy, you gotta stop kicking your mommy's organs, it hurts her. I know you love your mommy so you need to be gentler ok? Do you want daddy to sing to you?" he coo's, resting one hand on my bump. Jack kicks his palm and Jace smiles.
"I'll that as a yes." He says. "Were having a baby, my baby and me
You'll read it in Winchell's
That we're adding a limb to our family tree
We're pushing our carriage
How proud I will be
There's nothing like marriage
Ask your mother and father and they'll agree
He'll have toys, baby clothes
He'll know he's come to the right house
By and by, when he grows
Maybe he'll live in the White House
Our future gets brighter
But definitely
We're having a baby
We're having a baby
We're having a baby
My baby and me." Jace sings. Jack's kicks immediately become softer and less frequent, after a few minutes he stops altogether. I smile broadly at Jace.
"I think he's asleep you miracle worker." I say. Jace smiles and kisses me.
"Sleep tight baby boy." He whispers to my belly and kisses it. I smile, I can't wait to see Jace with Jack he's going to be purely amazing. Jace sits up beside me and kisses me.
"Love you." He whispers. I smile.
"Love you too." I say.
There's a soft knock on the bedroom door.
"Come in!" Jace calls. The door creaks open and mom and dad walk in holding hands. I smile broadly at them.
"Hey." I say. Mom smiles.
"How are you feeling sweetie, we were so, so worried about you." Mom says hugging me.
"The sooner this little guys born the better, then we don't have to worry about you two so much, huh?" Dad says pulling back from our embrace and gently patting my belly. I smile.
"Yeah." I say.
"Is it true he might have to be born early?" Mom asks. I nod.
"Tessa says if I rest up he shouldn't have to but there's still a possibility." I say.
"I'm presuming you aren't going to let her lift a finger anyway, am I right Jace?" Dad asks smiling.
"She's not allowed to set one foot out of this bed for the next 2 and a half months." Jace says.
"There's overprotective and then there's Jace." I say. Mom smiles.
"You know your dad was even more over protective than Jace when I was pregnant with you Clary." Mom says. I didn't think that was possible. I look to dad to see him smiling.
"It's true, I wouldn't even let her walk to Magnus', I told her it was too far and would be bad for you." Luke says.
"Well Tessa did tell me long walks can trigger labour." I say.
"I knew it, I was right it would've been very bad for you and Clary." Dad says.
"Clary's six months pregnant with severe placenta abruption, of course long walks would trigger labour, anything would trigger labour for her at this stage, otherwise she wouldn't be on bed rest. When I wanted to walk to Magnus' I was only five months pregnant, so therefore you aren't right." Mom says.
"You always have an answer." Dad says. Mom laughs.
"I think Luke was right, even if Clary didn't have placenta abruption I wouldn't let her walk long distances." Jace says.
"Protective dads unite." I say. Dad and Jace laugh.
"When you were born Clary, your dad hardly ever had you out of his arms, everywhere we went he would carry you or push your pushchair." Mom says. I smile, from the sounds of things Luke has been a father to me since before I was even born.
"I can tell Jace will be the same when Jack's born." I say.
"Magnus is gonna be worse. And Raziel help poor Lily when she's born, Izzy and Simon will never let her out of their sight, and of course Alec is never going to have her out of his arms either." Jace says.
"By Alec I know you mean you." I say. Jace smiles.
"Ok you have me there, but Alec is never going to have Jack out of his arms." Jace says.
"That's if he can get him out of your arms." I say. Jace laughs.
"Oh I didn't know Simon and Izzy were expecting! Luke, why didn't you tell me?" Mom asks.
"I forgot, I'm sorry." He says.
"Oh this is great! Simon will be a great father! He's always been such a sweet caring little boy; he's defiantly going to spoil his little girl, worse than you spoiled Clary Luke." Mom says.
"How come you didn't react like that when we told you Clary's pregnant?" Jace asks.
"Because she doesn't know you like she knows Simon, plus she loves Simon a little bit too much." I say.
"I just think he's so nice and respectful, and I've known him since he was five." Mom says.
"In fairness you can't not love Simon." I say.
"I don't love him." Jace says.
"Yeah but you don't hate him." I say.
"True." He says.
"So are you getting nervous about being parents in less than three months?" dad asks.
"A little bit but I'm looking forward to it more than anything." I say rubbing my belly.
"I can't wait any longer! I just want him to be here now." Jace says placing his hand on top of mine.
"Usually it's the mother saying that." Mom says.
"I know but I really want to meet my little boy!" Jace says.
"Luke it's like looking at a young you again, you were exactly like Jace when I was pregnant with Clary." Mom says. Dad smiles.
"It's true, you're lucky I let you marry her Jace, I never planned on letting her date until she was at least thirty." Dad says.
"And now I'm sixteen, pregnant and married." I say.
"Oh stop Clary you're growing up too fast!" Dad says. I smile.
*10 minutes later*
"Clary I have a surprise for you at the institute." Jace says.
"What is it?" I ask sitting up on my elbows.
"Well if I told you that it wouldn't be a surprise would it?" Jace asks. I smile.
"I guess not." I say. Jace smiles and helps me up.
Five minutes later we arrive at the institute and Jace leads me up the stairs.
"Close your eyes." He says.
"Why?" I ask.
"Because it's a surprise." He says.
"Fine." I say and close my eyes. Jace guides me down the hall for a few minutes before we stop. I hear him open a door and we step inside.
"Ok, open them." He says. I do and gasp at what I see in front me. It's a nursery for the baby. I smile broadly. The walls are painted a warm baby blue. Against the wall with a window is an oak crib with the Herondale crest carved into it. The sheets are white and the little quilt is blue, as is the pillow. It's patterned with little stars. Above the crib, on the wall is the Herondale crest. On the opposite side of the room is a changing station and beside that a rocking chair. Beside the crib is a chest of draws for Jack's clothes and whatnot.
On top of it are a few stuffed animals and a little rectangular black box.
"Oh Jace." I whisper.
"Open the black box." He says quietly. I walk over and pick it up. When I open it I gasp. It's a golden necklace with 3 pendants on it, also gold. On the first pendant 'Clarrisa Adele Herondale' is inscribed. On the second 'Jace Christopher Herondale' is inscribed, and on the third 'Jack Stephen Herondale.' is inscribed. I gasp and look at Jace.
"When Jack's born I'm going to get his day of birth and weight inscribed on it. Then in a few years when you're pregnant with our next baby we'll put another pendant on there with their name and then when their born their date of birth and weight and we'll do the same when you're pregnant with our third baby." Jace says. I am at loss for words. This is the most amazing gift I've ever gotten from Jace.
"Oh Jace, this is perfect, thank you so much! I love it so much!" I say flinging myself into his arms.
"I was thinking, we could think of a name for the baby we lost a few months ago and inscribe their name and the day we lost them under Jack's, it would be a good way to remember them." Jace says. Tears well up in my eyes at the thought of the baby we lost.
"But we didn't know if it was boy or a girl." I say.
"A few day after we lost the baby, I asked Magnus if he, by any chances could tell the sex when he checked you over, and he said he could." Jace says.
"What was it?" I whisper.
"A girl." He whispers. Tears pour down my face, a daughter, we lost our little girl. Jace wipes the tears off my face. I look up and see he is crying as well.
"I'd really, really like that." I whisper. Jace takes my hand and leads me to the rocking chair. He sits down and pulls me into his lap. I rest my head on his chest and think of names for the little girl we lost.
"What about 'Annabelle'?" Jace whispers. I smile, I like that name, a lot.
"I love it." I whisper.
"Now we need a middle name." Jace whispers. I can hear the sadness in his voice as we think of names for our lost baby girl.
"What about Imogen?" I whisper. Jace looks at me with tears swimming in his gold eyes.
"Annabelle Imogen Herondale, I love it." Jace whispers. I smile and softly kiss him.
"When did we lose her?" I whisper.
"The 23rd of November 2006." Jace whispers. Tears are rapidly streaming down my face.
"We'll inscribe it on the pendant tomorrow." I say. Jace nods.
"Let's go back to Magnus'." Jace whispers. I nod.
*that night*
Jace and I are still crying as we lay in bed in each other's arms.
"I thought we were done crying months ago." I whisper.
"It's gonna get easier, it'll always be hard, but not this hard, it was worse when we first lost her." Jace whispers. I nod, he's right.
"I love you." I whisper. Jace smiles softly.
"I love you too, and Jack." He says rubbing my belly. He then looks up to the ceiling.
"I love you too Annabelle, I hope you're taking good care of her Raziel." Jace whispers. Oh my Jace! How sweet and perfect he is. I start crying and rest my head on Jace's chest.
"I'm sorry; I didn't mean to make you cry." Jace whispers.
"No, its ok you didn't, I'm crying at how sweet you are." I say. Jace rubs my back and kisses my head.
That night I fall asleep in Jace's arms and have the most beautiful yet saddest dreams of my life.
I first dream about Jack and Annabelle lying in their crib when their a few months old, they're gurgling to eacother and attempting to hug eacother. I wake up crying tears of joy and sadness. When I tell Jace he also starts crying.
After that I dream about Jack when he's 3, running around the garden chasing after a little boy with bronze hair and gold eyes flecked with green, the little boy is about 1.
I then realize that the little boy with bronze hair is Max. Our Max, Max Herondale. I wake up from that dream with a huge smile plastered on my face. Jace and I have the future with Jack and our other babies to look forward to.
