"Remind me again why we're here," John said as he and Meg watched a Madonna-clad Aurora sing Material Girl.
"My lab partner is in the band," Meg repeated for third time since they arrived an hour ago.
"You said that already."
"And you asked me that question already," Meg snapped.
John frowned. "Why are you being so snippy with me?"
Meg ran her hand through her hair. "I'm sorry."
Despite all of Flynn's convincing that everything was going to be fine, Meg ended up getting caught ditching when the principal called George at work. He and Mary were waiting for her when she got home. George yelled, Mary said over and over how disappointed she was in Meg. But, in the end, they didn't punish her. In fact, they lifted her grounding. Mary was convinced that Meg was just rebelling after being punished in the first place and if she didn't punish her, then maybe she'd stop acting out. Meg thought it was a trick. She didn't tell them she was going out tonight and she half expected them to show up at Bar Line and drag her back to the house. She's been on edge all night, paranoid that she's about to get in trouble, and John nagging her was only making her frustrated.
John grabbed Meg's chair and pulled her closer to him. "Don't worry about it," he told her before kissing her head.
Everyone around them started cheering when Aurora finished her performance. She bounded off the stage to where Flynn was waiting for her. He wrapped his arm around her and kissed her. It made Meg sick. If she wasn't his girlfriend, why was he being so public with his affection towards her?
Meg watched them make their way through the crowd. When she realized they were heading towards her table, she reached over and took John's hand. She immediately realized how childish she was being. Why did she care what Flynn was doing with another girl? They weren't dating. And why did she feel the need to try to make him jealous?
"Hey, Meg," Flynn greeted.
"Hi."
"You look great."
Meg shifted uncomfortable in her tight skirt. "Um, thanks."
"Hey, I bought you something." Flynn reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small plastic bag.
Meg took it. "What is it?"
"Just open it; it's nothing special," Flynn told her. Meg reached into the bag and pulled out a pair neon pink, large square-shaped, plastic earrings. "I noticed you've been wearing mismatching earrings lately, so there's also a pair of pink dangling earrings in there, too."
"You bought her jewelry?" Aurora demanded. "Isn't that a little inappropriate?"
Meg glanced back and forth between Flynn and Aurora as she put on one of each of the earrings. "It's just costume jewelry, Aurora. They're not diamond earrings," Flynn finally said.
"Still. I think it's rude to give another girl jewelry- especially in front of her boyfriend and your girlfriend," Aurora huffed.
"I'm fine with it," John said.
Flynn smirked at her. "See? John's cool with it. Besides, Aurora, you're not my girlfriend."
Aurora gaped at him for a moment, but recomposed herself. "Whatever. I'm gonna go find Odette and the girls."
Flynn nodded. "You do that." Once Aurora was gone, he turned back to Meg and John. "Hey, it's supposed to rain tomorrow night, so I'm having a small party at my house instead of having the bonfire; you guys wanna come?"
"Sure, man," John said. "We'll be there."
"All right, everyone!" Jim announced from the stage. "That was Esmeralda singing I Love Rock n Roll. Next up is Flynn Rider!"
Flynn winked at Meg before running up to the stage; slapping a few high fives on the way as if he was some famous rockstar. He took his spot at the mic and motioned at the band that he was ready. As soon as the music for Waiting for a Girl Like You started, Meg's heart sank. The lights dimmed and some couples gathered at the dance floor. John put his arm around Meg and kissed her cheek. But, Meg didn't notice any of this. She kept her eyes on Flynn until her vision blurred and she flashbacked to the night before he left the orphanage. This was the song that was playing when Eugene first told her he loved her and when they lost their virginity to each other. Was he trying to tell her something? Or did he not remember this was the song and it was just a coincidence?
When Flynn was done, he headed over to the bar. He was instantly surrounded by girls from school; every one of them was flirting with him, and he went along with it. Meg tried to convince herself that his song choice meant nothing; Flynn was over her and she was over him. They weren't the same people from that night anymore. But, it didn't work; she had to talk to him.
"I'll be right back," Meg muttered absently to John.
"All right, babe."
Meg made her way through the pack of girls vying for Flynn's attention. Her heart was racing and she suddenly felt nervous. When she came face to face with Flynn, he smiled at her.
"Hey, Meg."
"Why that song?" Meg demanded.
Flynn looked at his adoring fans. "Let's not talk about this here. Excuse us, ladies." He took hold of Meg's arm and led her out to the parking lot.
Meg shoved his hand off her and put her hand on her hip. "Of all the 80s songs you could have chosen, why that one?"
"I think it's obvious, Meggie."
"Stop it!" Meg jabbed her finger at his chest. "Stop calling me that, stop telling me how you feel about us and then taking it back. Stop asking me to sleepover and stop bringing up memories of our last night together. I can't do this, Flynn. I have a boyfriend, whom I really like."
"Like?"
"Yes, Flynn; I like John."
Flynn stepped closer to her. "There was a time when you loved me, Meg."
Meg took a step back. "I said stop it."
Flynn glared at her. "When did you become so hostile towards me?"
"When you left me!" Meg snapped.
"I didn't have a choice! I had to leave."
Meg took a deep breath to calm down. "I know you did. But you didn't have to tell me you loved me the night before and then sleep with me."
Flynn lowered his voice as well. "You reciprocated, Meg."
"Of course I did! It's just that… God! Why did you have to wait until you were leaving? If you loved me, why didn't you tell me sooner?"
Flynn ran his hand through his hair, planning his response. "I didn't want all that to happen at the orphanage. I wanted it to be special. I thought we'd be leaving there together and we could have this perfect moment together when we were gone. But it didn't work out that way and I took the only chance I was given."
"If you had this special moment planned, why not just wait?"
"Because I honestly didn't know if I was going to see you again."
Meg just stared at him for a moment. Finally she said, "You said you'd come back for me. You promised me we'd see each other again when we turned eighteen."
"I know. But, realistically, that wasn't a promise I was in a position to make."
Meg nodded and turned away from him. "You're right." She cleared her throat. "I should get back inside to John."
Flynn ran after her and spun her around. "Don't be mad at me."
"I'm not."
Flynn studied her face. "You're sad," he accused.
"I'm confused," Meg corrected, lowering her head so her hair covered her face. "I don't know what it is that you want from me."
Flynn brushed her hair off her face. "I just want my Meg back. I want things to be the way they were before."
"I'm with John now."
"So, dump him."
Meg narrowed her eyes at him. "That's not fair."
"Neither is me having to see you with him."
Meg pulled her arm free and backed away from him. "What about me seeing you with Aurora? And Giselle? And Rapunzel? And every other girl in school?"
"Does that bother you, Megara?"
"Of course it does!" she blurted out.
Flynn cocked an eyebrow at her. "Why is that?"
"Because I…" Meg let out a frustrated growl. "Dammit, Flynn! I don't know why. Just forget I said anything. I have to go."
"Meg, wait."
Meg continued towards the door. "I have to go."
She heard Flynn call after her again, but she ignored him. Bar Line was still crowded and it took her a couple minutes to make it back to the table where John was waiting. She half expected Flynn to come after her, but he didn't. She was glad. This was all too much to deal with right now and it was making her head spin.
"There you are." John stood when Meg approached the table. "Are you ready to go?"
Meg nodded. "Definitely."
John took Meg's hand and held it tightly as they forced their way back to the door. It suddenly felt awkward holding John's hand. Not necessarily the act itself, but because Meg was actually contemplating breaking up with him to be with Flynn. In no way, shape or form was it fair to John, but better for it to happen now than later. Meg was almost certain Flynn was the one she wanted to be with.
But, what if Flynn really was the type of guy who would be with more than one girl at a time. She'd witnessed firsthand him asking out more than one girl in the same day; would he be any different if Meg was his girlfriend? What if he wasn't? What if Meg threw away a perfectly good thing with John just to get her heartbroken by Flynn? And if he did break her heart, what would happen to their friendship?
"Leaving already?" Flynn asked when they made it to the parking lot.
"Yeah, this isn't really my scene," John told him.
Flynn nodded. "I'll see you guys at my house tomorrow night, right?"
"I don't know if I can make it," Meg said.
Flynn laughed. "Yeah, right. Smith, make sure you bring her tomorrow night."
John put his arm around Meg and pulled her close. "Don't worry, I'll get her there."
Meg glared at Flynn. "I don't think it's a good idea for me to go, Flynn."
Flynn waved his hand dismissively. "Nonsense. It'll be fun. Oh, and Smith; there will definitely be alcohol, so if you're gonna be drinking, it's fine if you guys want to crash at my place."
"Sounds good, man," John said.
Meg was glaring so hard at Flynn, she was surprised actual daggers weren't shooting from her eyes. "John, can I just meet you at the car in a minute?"
"Sure. See ya tomorrow, Rider."
Meg waited until John was out of earshot before turning on Flynn. "What the hell?" she hissed.
Flynn leaned casually against the building. "I don't know what you're referring to, Meg."
"The hell you don't!" she snapped. "How can you tell me to dump my boyfriend and then ten minutes later invite us to stay the night at your house?"
"I'm just being friendly, Meg."
Meg stared him down, then slowly shook her head. "No... No, that's not it. You have some sort of hidden agenda. I know you do."
"Like what?"
"I don't know," Meg admitted. "But I'm not showing up tomorrow to find out."
Flynn pushed himself off the wall and moved closer to her. "Just break up with him, Meg. He already knows there's something between us."
"But, there isn't," Meg pointed out.
"There was. And we both want there to be again."
"We're not discussing this now."
"Tomorrow night then."
"Fine." Meg spun on her heel, but quickly turned back around when she realized what she had just agreed to. "Wait, no. I'm not-"
"I'll see you tomorrow night, Meg." Flynn turned and headed back inside before Meg could stop him.
