A very short update I'm afraid, but I hope you will enjoy reading this one nonetheless. I seem to be apologising an awful lot lately for taking so much time in between chapters... I can only say that I've been extremely busy :(. I will finish this story, the end is not far off now, but it might take some time. I am really grateful to all of you for being so patient and sticking with me. Merry Christmas everyone and a happy, happy new year!
"So you have absolutely no idea where your brother might have gone?"
Provenza asked, disbelief laced through his words. The woman on the other side of the table had calmed down slightly since they informed her why they were looking for her brother, but she still looked rather distressed.
"I'm afraid not. You have to understand I haven't spoken to Robert in years."
Her hands were starting to shake, and she was shifting uncomfortable under their gaze.
"So why is that?"
Flynn was feeling more and more frustrated. It was clear that the woman was withholding some kind of information from them or, at the very least, she seemed reluctant to go into details about the relationship she had with her brother.
"I – You see, my brother and I…" She hesitated for a moment. "We never really got along. And when he finally got out of prison… Well, he was never quite the same."
She placed her hands in her lap, her eyes never leaving them.
"He kept going on about Helen, about how she was murdered, didn't want to hear a word about the suicide. I tried…"
She took a shaky breath, but seemed determined now to continue. Provenza and Flynn exchanged a quick, meaningful look. Keaton had clearly been planning his revenge ever since he got out of prison, if not before.
"He said he knew who'd done it, who'd murdered Helen. I tried to tell him that she took her own life, that no one was to blame, but he wouldn't have it."
Andy glanced at his watch. It was late, much later than he would have liked it to be. Much like the rest of the division, He was painfully aware that time was running out. Every minute that went by could be the Captain's last. Sharon's last.
"I'd never seen him like that. You have to understand, I had my own family to think off… I couldn't help him."
She started crying, just as Flynn's patience finally ran out.
"Look spare me your family drama, we are dealing with a missing police officer here! If you have nothing useful to say…"
He had almost made it through the door, when a small voice stopped him dead in his tracks.
"What about their old house? I heard it is on sale now, Robbie might have gone back there."
Andy abruptly stood up, his chair falling to the ground as he did. The witness startled as he did so. Provenza, on the other hand, just raised his eyebrow. In the past few weeks he'd grown accustomed to Flynn's odd behaviour where the Captain was concerned. He did not claim to understand his partner's sudden interest in Raydor, but even he had to admit he was concerned and he wanted to find the Captain just as much as the other lieutenant.
"Get the address."
Without another word he moved out of the interrogation room, intending to inform the chief as soon as possible.
Sharon had been properly scared before, but it was only when Keaton stated dragging her to the living room by her hair that she truly panicked. She struggled, clawed at anything she could get hold off, but it was no use. Keaton was much bigger and stronger and her own 5'5'' frame seemed to weigh next to nothing to him. With one hand he started untangling the ropes that held together a set of blue curtains. She scratched and bit and repeatedly punched him in the side, but his grip on her hair did not loosen.
"You stupid bitch!"
He groaned when she managed to hit him in the kidney area. Temporarily he stopped his efforts, turned to her and kicked her in the stomach. as she doubled over in pain, he started winding the first rope around her wrist, effectively tying her to the radiator underneath the curtains.
"Scared yet, Captain?"
He sneered, while untying a second piece of rope. Sharon frantically tried to undo her bonds worth one hand, ignoring her nails tearing at the rough material.
"Ahh there we go."
Keaton muttered under her breath when he managed to pull down the second rope. Sharon felt her heart stop momentarily when she realised he was winding it into a noose.
"I promised remember?"
In one swift movement he freed her from the radiator and started pulling her with him, back to the stairs. White hot panic started to overtake her. Wildly she looked around her, idly searching for something, anything, that she might use in her defence. When they reached the top of the stairs Keaton put the noose around her neck and started pulling on the rope. She couldn't breath, the rope was cutting in her skin. Once he was finished tying the end round the banister... Any moment now...
In a last desperate attempt she pulled herself from his grip, only to feel a sharp pull on the rope round het neck. Coughing and gasping for air she fell to the ground where she remained motionless. This was the end. She knew it.
"Move away from her!"
Never had she been happier to hear Brenda Leigh Johnson's southern accent. She felt Keaton's hand grasp her arm, intending to pull her up, but before he could two shots sounded and he fell limply beside her. She tried to get away from his lifeless body, but it was all too much. The adrenaline coursing through her veins had kept her head clear, and her reflexes sharp, but now she felt her legs buckle underneath her. Unable to carry her own weight any longer she fell back to the floor. Dark spots danced in front of her eyes and she began shaking uncontrollably. Suddenly she felt a hand on her shoulder and she flinched involuntarily. Only when someone started removing the rope around her neck she relaxed and instinctively clutched at the familiar frame.
"Shhh I've got you. "
She heard Andy whisper as she buried her face into his shoulder.
