What Was Lost

Next to the river, a gray pup sat alone.

Humphrey wasn't thinking. His mind was blank, and he wanted it to stay that way. He didn't even think to ask himself why he was there.

He suddenly caught the scent of something in the bushes behind him.

Alerted, he jumped around. Whatever it was, it was way too close. His sharp senses had saved him more than 10 times, but his senses weren't strong enough, not at his body's age.

He tried to find out what it was from the scent, but he couldn't tell what it was.

He was only sure of one thing. There was something there.

It's not an enemy. He thought, analyzing the situation. It definitely doesn't have killing intent, and it's definitely not a rat or a rabbit.

The, he noticed something else.

It's approaching me from downwind. It has to be another wolf. It's well-trained too. He thought again.

He just stood at there, waiting for it to emerge. However, he was prepared to jump in the river, for that would be the only route of escape if his instinct was wrong.

While it was approaching, he decided on another method. He slowly grabbed a twig in his mouth and hid behind the tree that he was sitting next to.

Then it appeared. To no surprise, it was a female wolf, poised for attack.

Humphrey moved the twig from his mouth to his paw. Once she lunged, he would poke her eye with the twig.

In realization, Humphrey dropped it.

Anne was lurking in the tall grass behind Humphrey. She had just come back from that nightmarish Training, or the 'Training Playground' as she dubbed it, and was on her way to pick Humphrey and Katherine up from the kindergarten.

Then, she saw a pup sitting alone on the river bend. Without a doubt, it was Humphrey. Any normal pup would've gotten caught sneaking away.

She moved ahead a little bit. Practicing all she had learned from her training.

It's no big deal to scare my own son right? She chuckled to herself. But what in the world is he doing here?

She moved inch by inch, absolutely sure that Humphrey had not detected her.

"HAAA!" she yelled as she jumped to pounce on Humphrey.

"Eh?" was all she could say when she didn't see Humphrey where she thought he was.

"Mom? what the hell are you thinking?" A small voice yelled.

Anne turned around and saw Humphrey glaring at her.

"Oh! There you are!" Anne said, with annoyance showing on her face. "When did you notice that I was there?" She asked.

"I almost..." Hurt You! Humphrey mumbled.

"Hmm?" Anne queried.

"Why can't you…"

Humphrey was furious… or rather, he was scared to death. If he didn't realize it was his mother in time, who knows what might've happened?

"...Never mind."

Anne was really surprised to see Humphrey's temperament. She just wanted to play around.

"Are you Ok? Did I scare you?"

Humphrey turned his head to the river.

"I scared myself..." He said in a voice so low, only he could hear it.

No wonder Kate doubts me...

"What did you say?" Anne asked.

"Nothing...I just need some time to myself." Humphrey said. He just remembered why he left the kindergarten.

"Please, leave me alone." He walked to the edge of the water and gazed at his reflection,

"My name is Humphrey, but… Is that who I really am? Am I still Humphrey the Omega?" he asked himself. "Damn it… We've changed too much…"

"OK! kids! Line up now!" A red male wolf yelled as he walked out of the forest. "Time to sign up for Alpha School!"

"Wait, Sam!" Jan, the Omega wolf nanny came running out from the crowd of pups. "I thought the registration was next week!"

"It was." Sam said. "But we've decided to put it ahead of schedule."

"Why? They're too young for that!" Jan objected.

"Too young?! Nevermind that. Just shut up and do as I say." Sam said sternly. "It's only sign up. The Alpha school will still be held when autumn comes around." Dian, Sam's mate who was also red furred, walked up to them

"Sam...I'll talk to her." She said.

"Good...Winston wants the list tonight." Sam said, and left without another word.

Jan cast Dian a glance. Sam was known for his bad temper, but today… well, let's just say it wasn't pretty.

"Don't ask.. .He's under a lot of pressure." Dian said. "It's really a mess."

"I know...But is it that bad?" Jan asked.

Dian almost glared at her. ...I need to tell her… but I can't… Oh well, it'll be announced tonight anyway.

"I shouldn't tell you this now, but the death toll will be announced tonight." She said.

"The Eastern pack was almost entirely wiped out...only twelve remained, and four died later due to blood loss. As for us..."

Dian continued, while Jan covered her mouth with her paws.

"Let's just say… See these pups?" Dian asked. "Some were lucky and didn't lose any of their parents. But,almost half of them have lost one of the parents in the fight, and the rest are orphans."

There were tears forming under her eyes, but she didn't dare let them run down her face. Alphas never cried.

"I don't know the exact number of deaths, but… be prepared… perhaps even some of your friends were victims..." She said solemnly.

"How..." Jan asked. Technically, She is the only wolf who didn't play any part in the war. She was sick and bedridden back then.

"There's no point in asking. What's happened has happened, and nothing can change that. Here, let me help you sign up the pups. They want the list tonight." Dian said, facing them "Originally, their parents would decide for them, but now… they're gonna have to decide for themselves."

"You know, Humphrey," Anne said. Humphrey told her the whole story after some persuasion.

"There were two wolves who had a similar problem, or situation." Anne said.

"You see, she went on a journey to find her mate who had left for, who knows what reason."

Anne looked down at Humphrey as she was about to continue.

Humphrey was smart enough to know that Anne was talking about herself, and he was also smart enough to not interrupt.

"She had lost her direction and her hope. That's probably the epitome of being lost. of . She was so lost that she finally started to consider giving up..."

"But I didn't get lost!" Humphrey interrupted her. "...mom...I was just..."

"You are lost. You're panicking. You haven't a clue as to what to do." Anne shook her head. "Just as I had felt at the time."

Well… at least she said it.

"I almost gave up, but do you know who kept me from giving up?"

"My dad?" Humphrey asked. He almost forgot. Of course he had to have a dad. This is going to be a long story… he thought

"No, it was You." Anne said. "That night...Without any warning...You were born..." Anne said with a peaceful, happy look on her face. "And with that, I had hope again. I had a reason to keep on and never give up"

"Wait.. YOU WERE PREGNANT?!" Humphrey yelled in surprise, completely destroying the mood. "And Winston didn't try to stop you!?"

"He did… But I sneaked out. Can I finish my story?" Anne asked

"No...no need to I already know what you're trying to say...I will go to Kate and tell her everything..." Humphrey said and started to walk back.

"What...?" Anne was extremely confused. "What was I trying to say?"

"To make up with Kate...right?" He answered. He actually didn't know what it was that she was trying to say, but he figured that It had to do something with making up with Kate...

What? Anne questioned in her mind and looked at Humphrey with wide eyes.

"No..." She said.

"No?" Humphrey was confused. If that wasn't what she was trying to say, then what was the point of the story?

"I just wanted to let you know that I know how it feels to be in such a situation!"

Hearing this Humphrey tripped over his own feet. Of course his mother wasn't smart enough to give him advice with this kind of stuff.

At least, not everyone around me talks like a freaking psychologist. And I finally know why I became an Omega back then… with that kind of a mother, WHO WOULDN'T BE?! HAHA!

He was giddy. He wasn't quite sure why, but he was definitely not feeling down anymore.
