DreamWorks Dragons: Defenders of Berk
A Banished Beast
Chapter 26
Gobber gazed over at Hiccup; surprisingly to him, he knew exactly what the boy was talking about. He turned his body fully to face him and pointed at Hiccup with his prosthetic, which was his hammer.
"Hiccup," he said with both syllables of his name stretched. "Don't you go doing what I think you're planning on doing." He warned, taking a step or two forward.
"It's the best possible solution to our problem, Gobber." Hiccup argued back calmly.
"There are many other options, and they'll all less dangerous than that one."
"Yeah well, they're also less fair then this one."
Another hiss echoed down through the tiny cracks within the wooden ceiling. Gobber and Hiccup glanced up, Hiccup backing up a bit closer to Toothless who met him more than half way as the dragon began growling again. Gothi stood calmly in her spot, holding her staff and gazing up at the ceiling.
All was quiet save to Toothless' consistent growling.
"Do you think it left?" Gobber questioned with a whisper.
Suddenly, the door burst open, the Banshee shoving itself into the house. Gobber stumbled back from surprise while Hiccup gasped and fell back against Toothless. Said Night Fury roared at the other dragon, the two of them just seconds away from gnawing at each other's throats. But the Banshee also had its eyes set on Hiccup; however, it wasn't because it was thirsty.
Gobber took a few steps back and twisted his upper body around to face Hiccup momentarily.
"Hiccup, stay back!" he shouted quickly, raising his hammer-prosthetic up at the Banshee. The beast narrowed its eyes and glared at the Viking, lowering its head like a panther ready to snap forward at its prey. The dragon roared in protest as a staff was smacked against its face, the culprit being none other than Gothi. The Banshee roared at the small old Viking lady before getting another smack in the face. It ducked half its body back out the door only to stumble a little, scream in pain and pull itself the whole way out.
The Banshee peered up into the sky and sneered at the one responsible for the fire blast to its back.
"That a girl, Stormfly!" Astrid cheered, applauding her Nadder's well-aimed hit.
The Banshee roared furiously at them before having to jump onto the wooden pegs and climb up onto the roof to avoid the fiery blast from Hookfang as he and his rider swooped down.
"How you like that?! Hahaha!" Snotlout yelled with glee. The Banshee roared in response, turning to look out at the others that were now surrounding the house; a Deadly Nadder, a Monstrous Nightmare, a Gronckle, a Hideous Zippleback, and a Thunderdrum.
Hiccup stood up and gazed out the door, his eyes wide and his mouth ajar. He quickly hopped onto the saddle and clipped in his prosthetic.
"Hiccup, don't you—" Gobber said before his words were ignored.
"Sorry Gobber!" Hiccup shouted as he and Toothless ran out the door, Hiccup ducking close to Toothless' back so he wouldn't get hit by the frame.
"Hiccup!" Gobber shouted after them, but it was too late.
The shout of his name caught everyone's attention, even the Banshee. The beast glanced down to see the Night Fury and Hiccup on the balcony. The two of them looked up at it, Hiccup and the beast exchanging silent, interpersonal messages before Toothless jumped off and zoomed downward. The Banshee dashed after them, flapping its wings a couple of times to pick up some more speed.
"Hiccup!" Astrid shouted.
"What's he doing?" Fishlegs asked.
"Son!" Stoick yelled.
Toothless folded in his wings, now diving at a near ninety degree angle with the Banshee following. Hiccup narrowed his eyes, the ocean coming up fast. He pulled on the reigns and Toothless opened his wings. The two of them slowed their speed only enough to curve smoothly so that they were now flying horizontal to the ocean's surface. The Banshee followed their example, both strike class dragons maneuvering skillfully.
Hiccup looked over his back at the creature before looking forward again. Up ahead were the sea stacks, and Hiccup readjusted the tail fin to precisely maneuver through them. They turned left while the Banshee veered right, the two dragons barely crossing paths as they switched directions. Obstacle after obstacle passed in Hiccup's peripheral as they zoomed in, over, around and under the many rock forms that littered the ocean area.
The Banshee kept its eyes on Hiccup and Toothless, narrowing them before swinging right and coming close beside them. By this time, they were out of the sea stacks, now flying freely through the air with nothing to slow them down.
Hiccup led them around the island, Toothless tilting sideways to better angle himself for the sharp turns.
Berk's forest was coming into view, and Hiccup glanced behind him again. He nodded when he saw the Banshee hot on their tail, it and Toothless' speed practically matching. He looked forward and put pressure onto the reigns, Toothless diving down toward the trees in response.
The Banshee and the Night Fury weaved in and out through the forest, flying out into a large area and flying down along beside the rushing water that fell off of the cliff edge.
Toothless roared, now understanding what Hiccup was trying to do and, despite the fact he was a bit confused as to why he'd even bother, he was enjoying himself. This was the same thing they would do during their morning flights.
Hiccup glanced back one more time, the Banshee following them, but keeping the same speed as Toothless. They weren't going fast now, and the Banshee could have easily caught up to them. He smiled and turned back around.
"It's working," Hiccup stated.
The two of them zipped past the tree tops and zoomed back toward the village. But before they reached it Hiccup and Toothless flew up. High into the clouds they soared, twisting and twirling about as the Banshee flew just behind them. The beast did a few curves to its flight pattern, still too stubborn to let go of its ego.
As soon as Toothless reached high above the clouds, Hiccup unfastened his prosthetic from the stirrup and balanced himself on the saddle. The next thing anyone knew, he jumped. Toothless dived down alongside him, the two falling beautifully towards the ocean far, far below them.
It would have been a perfect moment to snag him, the Night Fury won't have been able to do anything about it; it can't fly without the Viking boy. He was vulnerable to attack, such an easy capture; the boy was powerless; all the power was given to it, the Banshee.
The beast's eyes widened at the moment and quickly dived down, flapping its wings to pick up speed. Faster and faster it fell, getting closer and closer to Hiccup. Any minute now it could swoop in and dart off with its food again, no one could stop it. Except itself…
The Banshee folded in its wings as soon as it caught up, falling right beside Hiccup and Toothless, nose diving straight down through the puffy white clouds. It didn't look when Toothless narrowed his eyes at it and it didn't bother to do anything to escape with Hiccup. Instead it roared and did a little twirl before dashing ahead and leveling off only to dart forward toward the village.
Hiccup turned himself around and repositioned himself on the saddle, clicking in his metal leg and bringing out the tail fin. Toothless and he slowing a bit, wings spread fully out and catching wind. They too leveled off, flying smoothing as they watched the Banshee.
The dragon zipped up to the docks, flying speedily past them and veering around the houses. It made wide turns and many twists, soaring up then down, over and in between. It flew with smooth curves, and effortless speed; expertly maneuvering throughout the village and the surrounding area.
Hiccup and Toothless landed down in front of the Haddock house, their heads moving along the path the Banshee took. Hiccup smiled as his planned worked and his theory was correct. It seemed the Banshee was trainable after all. And it seemed they still had a lot to learn about the new dragon.
To be continued…
No the story isn't over yet, don't you see the "To be continued…" right above this sentence?
Alright, so I was working on my English homework along with this chapter and you all know that work comes before play. I had to finish that before finishing the chapter, so that's the reason why it's so late in the night. This story has one more chapter left, the explaining chapter that practically sums it all up and answers questions. So if you do have any questions, tell me so I can make sure to answer it in chapter 27.
