A/N: So this chapter comes to you from the very long road between Adelaide and Melbourne Australia. I am currently on my way to Melbourne to attend Oz Comic Con once again. In store for me this weekend is RDA, Torri Higginson, Gary Jones and an array of other wonderful people. I am hoping to get quite a bit of the story written on my long drive to and from.
The noise of the machines next to her and the calming sense that she always got when she was with Sam was nearly enough to send her to sleep, nearly. It had been days since she had gotten any sleep between all of them, they had been keeping a constant vigil at Sam's bed side since she got out of surgery two days ago. Doctor Lam wasn't expecting any sign of consciousness from her for at least another couple of days, but the doctors have been wrong before, and this was Sam they were dealing with. Cassie knew she was always to stubborn to do what was expected.
She was struggling to keep her eyes open, despite having just started her watch she hadn't slept at all in the sixteen hours since her last stint in the same hard, plastic chair. Daniel was just as bleary eyed as her when she got thereto relieve him. Even the nurses were starting to look worse for wear. This mission had taken its toll on everyone. Just as her chin started to journey towards her chest she saw movement out of the corner of her eye.
Despite her lack of sleep she kept a keen eye on Sam and something had changed enough for her to notice. "Sam honey can you hear me?"
Cassie grasped Sam's hand and started rubbing slow circles on the back of it. She noticed Sam's eyes were moving beneath her eyelids and she was starting to stir in the bed. Although she still wasn't breathing on her own but she was showing clear signs of waking up.
Her eyes shot open, cloudy and unfocused from all of the pain killers running through her system. It took a few seconds before both women overcame the shock of Sam waking up. Sam starting to writhe on the bed trying to grasp at the tube down her throat but with her injuries she wasn't doing much except causing herself pain.
"Whoa! Sam, you need to calm down it's alright you're back at the SGC. You're safe!"
Her breathing was coming quickly and harshly, she was fighting with all of her will, just like always. Cassie was doing her best to calm her but she wasn't having much luck. The alarms were going off and the nurses couldn't be far away. She tried desperately to get Sam to focus on her but it was useless.
"Sam! Sam please you need to calm down before you hurt yourself. Shhh you're very brave, please."
Those were the only words she could think of that would ease her panic, for both of them those words had such meaning. Cassie was practically begging her to calm down now, she grabbed Sam's face on both sides and forced her to look in her eyes.
"God Sam please you are so brave, shhh. You have to remember how brave you are Sam, we all need you, Jack, Grace, Me. We all rely on you, shh! You are very brave, very brave." Finally Sam was starting to calm now and the nurses ran in with Dr Lam in their wake.
"What happened?"
"I.. I don't know she woke up, she's terrified."
Carolyn checked the various read outs on the machines. "Her heart rate is coming down, keep doing what you're doing. I would prefer to not have to give her any more sedative if I can help it."
Cassie just nodded and refocused her efforts with Sam.
"Hey you're alright, you can go back to sleep I will stay here, you're not alone. Shh you're very brave."
Sam's eyes had focused on Cassie's and she was significantly calmer now but still she was moving her arms around.
"I think she wants your hand."
Cassie looked down and it did seem that Sam was trying to find something under the blanket. She took her hand from Sam's face and found her hand under the blanket. Instantly Sam squeezed it as if her life depended on it, by now her heart rate had nearly returned to normal.
Her eyelids were growing heavy and her eyes were becoming clouded now that the adrenaline had run its course. Cassie could see sleep was closing in on her.
"Shh. Sam go to sleep, you're safe we won't let anything happen. Shh."
Slowly the nurses filed out until it was just the three women in the room. Sam was very much fighting to stay awake, Cassie was completely focused on Sam and Carolyn was writing in Sam's chart.
"Shh Sam it's alright, you can sleep."
Cassie continued to hold Sam's hand and talk to her soothingly even after unconsciousness had claimed her.
Cassie looked up finally from Sam's face to Carolyn. It was a silent conversation but Dr Lam went to fill in everybody about this latest development in Sam's condition. Jack and the others would want to know that she woke up.
A/N: Okay so I haven't had that much of a chance to write this weekend. I have had a great time though RDA is AMAZING and beautiful and lovely and did I say amazing? All of the other guests were amazing and I got heaps of great photos of all of the different Cosplay's including some great shots of my friend and me in our Stargate Cosplay. Also I have started the prequel to this story, the first chapter is already written and I am yet to name the story. I would like to run a competition for all of my readers, submit a suggestion for the story name (I would like it to relate to 'Coming Together' in some way) and whoever my Beta and I decide comes up with the best name will be sent the completed first chapter to read before it is published. To win you must either be a FF member or if you are a guest, you must PM me and include an email address that I can contact you on. Good luck Gateheads!
