Sorry this is late, I went to camp for three weeks and then...yeah. Stuff.
How eloquent, I know.
"Mama, I'm hungry!"
Esperanza Valdez looked down at her son, who pleaded with wide brown eyes. She smiled. In many ways he was so much like his father. "I'm cooking dinner now, mijo. It will be ready in a little bit."
Leo frowned. "What are you making?"
"Cheeseburgers."
His eyes lit up. "Okay." He left the kitchen, humming to himself.
Esperanza sighed. Leo was a growing boy, and she was not always here to make him dinner like she was tonight. She sometimes worked late into the night, her mind completely wrapped up in whatever project she was currently working on. It had been easier when Tia Callida had babysat him but now…
She shut her eyes. She would not think about Tia Callida, about the horror she had felt when she had found her son sitting on the picnic table, hands burning deep prints into the wood.
Leo, her child, was immune to fire. He was the son of a god, and he had a great destiny in front of him. But Esperanza didn't like to think about that. He was still only five years old. For at least a few more years, he would still come and tug on her shirt and say "I'm hungry."
She flipped the burgers over. Had she remembered to get cheese the last time she went to the grocery store?
You and Leo cannot eat bolts and gears, she told herself. You must…
She felt a tug on her shirt.
"Mama, I'm hungry!"
Next theme is Fast Food, which is one I've been looking forward to for a while. It's long and does indeed involve chicken nuggets.
