Chapter 26: The Witch Forest
The Phantomhive household has arrived in Germany on the outskirts of Nuremberg. The Phantomhive servants are sitting on the luggage as they wait for Ciel and Sebastian to come back with a carriage. Ciel was called to Germany on a mission given to him by Queen Victoria. Ciel took the servants along with him for reasons only he knows.
Sunshine sat next to Snake as they and the rest of the servants watched the Germany kids around them playing a game. Their was lots of laughter and the city was busy as people went along with their daily lives. The servants were dressed in warmer clothes as the weather in Germany was cold at the moment. Sunshine was sitting next to the bag she bought Snake to keep all his friends in. She was trying to keep them warm so they wouldn't freeze to much in the bag.
Sunshine looked up to Snake who suddenly took her hand in his as she felt him shaking a bit. "Oh you're cold Snake." She took off her scarf she was wearing and wrapped it around his neck nice and tug to keep him warm. Snake blushed saying nothing else as Mey-Rin watched adoring the scene of the lovers.
Bard stood up exclaiming "AAAARGH my butt hurts!"
Mey-Rin turned to him shocked "Bard! That's indecent!"
Bard just continued on "But we've been doing nothing but sitting for a whole day!"
Sunshine laughed a little "But it's pretty rare that even we get to come. It's an adventure!"
Suddenly a ball was kicked over to Finny's feet as the boys who kicked it were speaking to him in German. Everyone looked confused at what they were saying but probably thought they wanted to ball back. Finny got up and replied back to the boys in German as they all looked at him amazed.
*Sorry could you throw the ball over here?*
*Okay! Here it comes!* Finny threw the ball back to the boys a little too hard as they ran away. *Sorry! Sorry!*
Snake looked to Finny "You speak German? Says Dan."
Finny gave a nervous laugh "Ahhh...Yeah. A little."
"Everyone," They all turned to see Sebastian standing in front of two carriages as Ciel sat in one "We've procured a carriage. Please put on the luggage."
Sunshine sat next to Snake as he drove the servants carriage following Sebastian as they drove through the dark forest around them. Sunshine held onto Snake's arm as they went through the forest.
The others were looking around scared. "S-So this is the werewolf forest...it's creepyyyyy..." Mey-Rin exclaimed.
"I get why people says it's cursed" Bard added in.
Sunshine looked out into the dark forest feeling something out there pulling her in. The feeling scared her as she hung onto Snake tighter which didn't go unnoticed by him. He took a hand off the reigns and patted her head to comfort her. "I'll protect you my Sunshine." She knew he meant that himself as he didn't add one of his friends names into the sentence. He seemed to let his true self show around her, something that just made their bond grow.
In the carriage ahead of them, Sebastian and Ciel were talking about Witches and Sunshine. "But Witches are really just humans who have been falsely accused at rubbish trials. It's not like they really flew through the air or summoned storms. A curse is a kind of supernatural power... It's more of peculiar to believe in such things." Ciel told Sebastian as he smirked.
"I wonder."
"So have you ever met a real witch then? Were they like Sunshine?"
"Yes, in the past I have met with many people who called themselves Witches."
"Like you've been summoned and worshiped at the Witches Sabbath?" Ciel asked thinking it nonsense.
Suddenly they were interrupted as Sunshine called out pointing "Master Ciel, I can see buildings over there!"
They stepped out of the carriages looking at the village. "There really is a village inside the forest..." Ciel muttered. The village looked a century's old from their time and the walkways were empty with no people in sight.
"There's no one here...was it abandoned?" Finny asked.
Sunshine held onto Snake's hand tighter feeling the pull again as a vision came to her. In the vision women were surrounding them with pitch forks and weapons shouting in German.
Sebastian commented "No. The house's have been taken good care of. It's certain there are people living here."
"There are people living here...Women..." Sunshine muttered as Ciel, Sebastian and Snake looked to her with curious looks.
"Heeeeey! Anyone heeeere?" Finny suddenly called out to the village.
Then as in the vision, Women came out with pitch forks and weapons yelling at them in German as they surrounded them. *EVERYONE AFTER THEM! INTRUDERS!* The women were dressed in gowns from centuries ago.
"Well this sure is a big welcome." Bard commented holding his hands up.
Sebastian looked to the windows to see women with weapons at the ready. Ciel looked to Sunshine shocked that she was right as he looked back to the women. *Who are you? How did you get in here?*
Snake thought to himself "There only women in this village...could they be related to Sunshine somehow? Could they be Witches too?" He looked to see Sunshine looking at them with shock in her eyes.
"Tell them I wish to speak to the lord of this land." Ciel told Sebastian as he began speaking to the women in German.
*We do not wish to harm you. We would like to have an audience with your Lord.*
*What? Lord they say? Could it be...they're after Master Sullivan?*
"Master Sullivan?" Sunshine said looking to them shocked. Why did it sound so familiar? The women looked to her shocked as Ciel started talking and the women began to shout at him.
*Shut up! You lot...you must be rats, right!?*
Finny began speaking in German *A...A rat!? We're not...*
The women began to shout louder *Don't let the rats escape! Don't let them out alive! DEATH TO THE RATS! DEATH TO THE RATS!*
Suddenly a new voice appeared *What are you making such a fuss for?* The gang turned around to see A little girl about 11 dressed in clothes from centuries ago as a man dressed as a butler held her in his arms.
The women turned around *M-Master Sullivan!* They began to bow as the one who confronted them before bowed *We're sorry to have let intruders in!*
Sebastian asked the girl "You are...the lord, Master Sullivan?"
Sunshine looked to her in shock as she felt the pull towards this girl. The young girl replied in English "I am Sieglinde Sullivan. Lord of this forest!" Sieglinde and Sunshine made eye contact until it was broken as the man holding her in his arms went face to face with Sebastian.
"Where did you come from? Huh?"
Sieglinde hit him on the head. "Quit it Wolfram." He began apologizing "I'm sorry! It's been a long time since someone came here and..."
Sieglinde looked to Sunshine once more as she quickly moved her eyes to Ciel as he wondered why she was looking at him. Wolfram began to speak "I don't know how you got here... but our village "Wolfsschlucht" doesn't allow visitors to stay. If you understand, leave right away!"
Ciel whispered to Sebastian "Maybe we should go back and think of a plan."
Sebastian smiled looking to Wolfram and Sieglinde "I see. Well then, we shall-"
Snake noticed the way Sieglinde and Wolfram were looking at Sunshine as Wolfram shouted out "WAIT!" Sunshine froze in her tracks gripping Snake's hand tight as he looked to Wolfram with a glare, ready to attack if he had too. Wolfram continued talking "You know...I don't think you realize how lucky you are for crossing the forest unscathed."
"What do you mean?" Sebastian asked.
"I'm sure you heard about it. The werewolf that protects this village!"
Sebastian smirked glancing to Sunshine "So...you mean that this village is actually a Witches village protected by a werewolf?" Sieglinde and Wolfram noticed how Sebastian looked to Sunshine when he said Witch and how her eyes widened as they looked to her again.
Suddenly the leader women shouted to Wolfram "Lord Wolfram, they are dangerous! We must dispose of them-"
Sieglinde shouted to her "Wait!" As she began to whisper something in Wolfram's ear not taking her eyes off Sunshine.
Wolfram looked to her shocked "Young Lady, That's...She's..."
"Did you hear what I said?" Sieglinde's eyes narrowed at him.
Wolfram looked back to Sebastian and the others "Listen, If you go back now night will come before you can exit the forest. It gets very dangerous at night. I can't guarantee that you'll be able to get home safe. No...better to say you just won't. So... just this time, we're going to let you stay here for the night." Everyone looked to him shocked "We'll give you a place to sleep. Leave as soon as the sun rises."
The women shouted "Lord Wolfram!"
The women leader shouted "Why are you letting strangers into the "Green Manor?"
Wolfram looked to her "Hilde, the young lady requested so." Hilde bit back her tongue standing down.
"What did they say?" Ciel asked Sebastian.
"It seems they will let us stay at the Landowner's manor house for the night."
Wolfram pointed to a manor on the top of the hill "That is the lady's "Green Manor." Follow me!"
They began following Wolfram down the dirt path as Snake and Sunshine held hands. "If this is a Witch village, does that mean I'm related to them somehow?" Sunshine asked Snake wondering.
"I was wondering the same thing Says Dan." Snake said. "Maybe you'll find out more about your powers and the occult that killed your brother here."
Sunshine nodded agreeing "I hope so. My life just keeps turning into one big mystery that sounds like a story someone would read." Sunshine sighed as she smiled to Snake "At least I have you here."
"I'll always be here for you Sunshine Says Oscar." Sunshine looked down to Snake's bag to see Oscar poking his head out looking at her.
"Oh Oscar you flirt!" Sunshine giggled.
"First they want us to leave and then they want us to stay. What's going on?" Ciel asked.
Sebastian replied "I don't know. However...This is surely not a normal village." They all looked shocked to see torture items from Iron Maidens to bat's with spikes on them around the area. A pumpkin head hanging on a cross stood along with them.
"Eeek, what is this place?" Mey-Rin shouted out.
"It's full of torture instruments says Wilde!" Snake looked to Sunshine shocked as she looked at them in fear. Ciel and Sebastian looked to her as everyone else joined in noticing this.
Sunshine explained remembering what her teacher taught her about them "They were used during Witch trials."
Ciel looked to her nodding as he gave a knowing look to her "After all there might indeed be something very occult behind all this." He smirked at her as she looked to him shocked.
"Is that why you brought us here...? Is that why the Queen-" She finally realized "Wait, you and the Queen are in on this?"
Ciel smirked "The Queen sent me here on a mission but, Yes that was part of it. To discover the strange happenings here and find the occult."
Sieglinde looked behind, her eyes narrowing at Ciel *Hey Shorty! What's your name?*
Sebastian told Ciel "She's asking for your name."
"Ciel Phantomhive."
*How old are you?*
Sebastian replied *The young master is 13 years old.*
Sieglinde looked to Sunshine *What about that girl?*
Finny looked to Sunshine *Ah Sunshine. She's 17.*
Sigelinde smiled nodding as she looked at her. *Sunshine, Hmm?* Sunshine and her kept eye contact as Wolfram anounced "We're here!" He opened the gates to the manor as they walked inside. "This is the "Green Manor."
The land to the manor is divided by a very deep and broad moat, and only a bridge links the area to the gate. A fence encloses the entirety of the estate. The path leading up to the manor encircles a fountain swamped with moss. The front lawn is overwhelmed with poisonous plants and trees trimmed in exotic shapes. A circular arch directs to double doors which constitute the entrance. The imposing edifice of the manor consists of towers covered in moss.
Inside the manor there stands a large tree, with candles set by it; as well, its branches are embellished with lanterns. They all looked around in amazement taking in everything. Wolfram holding Sieglinde in his arms walked up the stairs looking to them "This way!"
Sebastian looked to Sunshine, Snake and the others "Please wait downstairs."
"Yessir!" Finny said.
Sieglinde whispered to Wolfram as he spoke "Ah! Young Lady, you come as well!" He pointed to Sunshine.
Sebastian looked to Sunshine "Sunshine, they want you to come as well."
Sunshine looked to Snake knowing they probably figured out who she was as she let go of his hand slowly "Ah Sunshine. Take Oscar with you just in case ok." He handed her Oscar out of the bag as he slithered under her shirt like his usual self. Sunshine followed Sebastian and Ciel leaving the others to wait downstairs.
They arrived to The second floor which contains a capacious dining hall, complete with a long table and an array of chairs. Sieglinde started speaking as Wolfram sat her in a chair *It's rare to have guests. We'll serve you a special dinner.*
Sebastian replied *It's much obliged.* Sebastian began to help Ciel sit in his chair as he went to Sunshine next to him and helped her in her chair.
Sunshine looked to Sieglinde's feet thinking to herself "Her feet look like they've been bound. I remember my teacher telling me that in China they have a custom of binding young girls feet to keep them small. But it made it them unable to walk which explains why Wolfram carries her around."
Suddenly Sieglinde spoke looking at Ciel *Hey you!*
Ciel looked to her shocked "Ah? Eh? Me?"
Sebastian replied *I'm really sorry. My young master isn't proficient in German yet...*
Sieglinde replied *I see...* She looked to Sunshine *What about that girl? Sunshine?*
Sunshine looked to Sieglinde confused as they made eye contact again. "Me?"
Sebastian asked Sunshine "She's asking if you know German."
Sunshine shook her head smiling nervous as she kept eye contact with the girl "A little, I'm not fluent though."
*She says she is not fluent but knows some.*
Sieglinde kept quiet as she kept staring at Sunshine then sometimes looked to Ciel. It felt like she stared at them for an hour until Ciel whispered to Sunshine "Hey, say something to her. You're both girls after all."
Sunshine gulped "But I'm not good at German."
"Sebastian can translate for you." Ciel said. "After all, you must have questions you want to ask her."
Sunshine gulped still looking to Sieglinde knowing Ciel was right. She did have questions she wanted to ask. Just as she began to open her mouth, they suddenly heard a growl coming from Sieglinde.
*My body is trying to tell me that I should take in some food.* Sieglinde said.
Sebastian pulled out his pocket watch "Mr. Wolfram is a bit late. Maybe something happened."
Sunshine noticed how nervous Ciel looked not understanding what Sieglinde was saying as she giggled remembering how he was in the circus. He was still adorable as ever.
Sieglinde responded *Indeed, he's later than usual.*
*May I take a look at the kitchen?*
*Fine.*
Sebastian walked out the door telling Ciel and Sunshine "Well then, please wait a little." Ciel looked to him shocked "What!" He turned to Sunshine "Uh this is awkward."
"Hey!" Sunshine and Ciel turned to look at Sieglinde understanding what she said. The girl continued speaking as the only things they could make out of what she said was Name, Black haired man. They looked to each other asking at the same time "Did you just understand some words she said?"
They both nodded as Ciel said "Name."
"and Black haired man." Sunshine added in.
"Could she be asking about Sebastian?" Ciel asked Sunshine waiting for her opinion.
"Yes I think so."
Ciel pointed to the door where Sebastian left "Sebastian. My...butler. Understand?"
Sieglinde gave a nod as Sunshine exclaimed "It worked!"
Sieglinde asked another question.
Sunshine said "Where, Your"
"Parents..." Ciel said looking sad. "Don't have...died."
Sieglinde looked to Sunshine waiting for her answer as well. Sunshine replied "Same. Died."
Sieglinde replied "Oh..." As she continued keeping eye contact on them again in silence. Oh great, not again.
Sebastian and Wolfram arrived with dinner. "Maultaschen and wiener soup. Ham Hock Eisbein. The desert is Rote Grutze." Sieglinde and Sunshine looked to the food in awe as they held up their forks and knifes.
Sieglinde spoke *Oh this looks good.* She turned to Wolfram *This meal is gorgeous! Good job Wolf.*
*No...well...that butler lent me a hand.*
Sebastian replied *It's the least I can do since you're accomodating us. How could I be a Phantomhive butler if I couldn't even provide some assistance?*
Sieglinde spoke *Lets see...* Poking her fork and knife into the meat as she took the whole thing stuffing it into her mouth. *Yeah it's good. I've never tasted this bread before. So soft!*
Ciel and Sebastian looked in shock as Sunshine smiled "The way she looks at you is intimidating you almost forget she's just a young girl."
Suddenly, Hilde burst through the door *Lord Wolfram, it's terrible! The- The werewolf has shown up! The werewolves have come! She's been badly hurt, Master Sullivan, please save her!"
Sigelinde turned to Wolfram *Hurry! Wolf!* Wolfram took her into his arms as he looked to the others *You wait here.*
Sebastian replied *No. Please let us come too. We would like to learn of the dangers associated with this forest.*
They arrived in the forest seeing a lady with scratch marks in her back. They looked to her shocked as Sieglinde spoke *This has never happened before. Sinking their teeth into one of my villagers...* Sunshine could see the fear in her eyes feeling the pull towards her again.
Wolfram pulled out a vial containing a mysterious substance *My lady, stop the bleeding.* Sieglinde began pouring it on the woman as she screamed out in pain. Sieglinde asked the woman *Where is your tailsman?"
A woman replied for her *She said she'd just be picking herbs nearby so she left it...*
*FOOLS! I told you so many times to always keep the talisman with you...* Sieglinde looked to them worried then to Sunshine.
Wolfram spoke to the women *It might still be near! Make more light!*
Ciel turned to Sebastian and Sunshine "What do you think?"
Sunshine replied "I Don't know...but something strange seems to be going on, that's for sure."
Sebastian asked "Shall I search the forest?"
"No wait. We can't make any suspicious moves." Ciel replied.
Suddenly a ugly, scary looking woman appeared carrying a stick and wearing a black caped hood *The great werewolves have been angered by our letting outsiders disrupt the forest! Outsiders, hurry up and leave!*
Sieglinde spoke to her *It's because she didn't carry her talisman! They won't attack if you have a talisman!* Sieglinde looked to Sunshine *You, Sunshine!* Sunshine looked to her hearing her name. *You're a witch too, aren't you? I can feel it, you feel that pull right?*
Sunshine could only make out a few words as Sebastian told her "They know you're a witch. She's asking you about the pull?"
Sunshine nodded keeping eye contact with Sieglinde as the girl gave her an object from her pocket *This is a talisman, it will protect you.*
The scary woman kept continued talking *Are you protecting the outsiders, Green Witch? Do not forget Green Witch! The cruelties your ancestors have experienced at the hands of outsiders! You cannot trust those from the outside! Don't forget the grudge of your ancestors! Don't forget our gratitude and awe of the great werewolves!"
*But I-*
*Foolish outsiders! You have angered the great werewolves!* The scary lady was now face to face with Ciel and Sunshine *It's all your fault! Yours!* She looked to Sunshine *YOOOOUURRSSSS! KIEEEHHHHH!* The lady stopped looking at Sunshine as she turned away.
Wolfram spoke *In any case, Do not leave your homes until morning! You should understand by now if you value your life, do not enter the forest alone! AT ALL!* Ciel, Sebastian and Sunshine exchanged looks thinking the same thing as they took the hurt woman away. Sunshine noticed the worried look on Sieglinde's face as she wondered to herself "Just what is going on in this village? Could the answers I want be in the forest?"
