Chapter 28

Lilly sighed as she sat back in the bed, an IV in her arm. Dr Palmer said that he was on his way and wanted her checked in. Scotty's family wanted to come down to the maternity floor with her but she insisted that they stay up on the surgical floor. She wanted them up there just in case something happened to Scotty.

She was hoping that Dr Palmer would come, give her something to stop the contractions and she could go back up and wait for her husband with them.

The door opened and Dr Palmer walked in "Lilly, I heard about what happened….I am sorry"

"Thank you"

"So let's see if you've dilated"

"Can't you just give me something to stop the contractions?"

"Lilly, you need to calm down….I know how much you want to be back upstairs but I am more concerned about you and the baby at the moment. Just let me check and see what's going on. Alright?" She relented and let him examine her, hoping that it wouldn't take too long "Looks like you're about 5cm Lilly; I think you've been in labour for a while now"

"Can you give me something to stop the contractors, magnesium right?"

Dr Palmer sighed "sure Lil, we can try it but are you sure you want to?"

Lilly frowned "What do you mean? I can't have the baby today not without Scotty here"

"You're at 40 weeks maybe it would be better to let nature take its course?"

Lilly shook her head violently, tears welling "I can't do this without Scotty, please Dr Palmer"

Dr Palmer really didn't like to interfere with a woman's pregnancy, he wasn't one of those doctors that would induce a pregnant woman so he could have holidays, or play a round of golf and he didn't like to stop the natural progression of labour when the baby was almost full term. But Lilly was clearly distressed about Scotty and that wasn't good for the baby at all.

"Alright, I'll draw up the medication but you need to calm down and at least get some rest"

Lilly wiped the tears away from her eyes and nodded, lying back against the pillows.

Dr Palmer returned a few minutes later with a syringe and moved to the side of her bed. She lay back in the pillows and waited for him to inject it into her IV and for her pain to stop. He was just about to inject the Magnesium when Lilly cried out "Of God, I think I am bleeding" Dr Palmer put the syringe down and lifted the sheet and it wasn't blood that he saw.

"Lilly, you're not bleeding, your waters have broken"

"What?"

"Your water has broken, I am afraid there is nothing I can do now….the baby is coming"

Lilly began to panic "No…no you have to do something, please Scotty needs to be here for the birth of his daughter"

Dr Palmer sighed "Lilly there is nothing I can do, once the waters break there is no way to stop the labour….your daughter is going to be alright" Lilly couldn't take it anymore, all the pain she was feeling from her husband being shot, the panic from having to go through labour alone was crashing down on her like a ton of brick. "Is there anyone I can call for you?" Lilly shook her head and reached for her bag, finishing through it for her cell phone and a tissue. "I'll get the nurse to come in here and change the sheets"

Chris's cell phone thrilled and she snatched it up, seeing that it was her sister "Lilly, what's happening with Scotty?"

"He's still in surgery but that's not while I am calling"

"What's wrong?"

"The baby, I am in labour"

"Oh my God, are you alright?"

Lilly moaned "I can't do this without him"

"Do you want me there?" Chris asked "I can get a sitter for the kids"

Lilly took a deep, shaky breath "call cousin Karmen, her number should be in the address book by the phone, see if you can drop the kids off with her and Rico"

"I'll be there as soon as possible Lilly"

Chris hurried into the hospital and over to the reception area "I am looking for the maternity ward" she asked the woman behind the desk.

"Third floor" she said curtly

"Thanks" she was hurrying over to the elevators when she heard someone calling her name, turning she was surprised to see Jack hurrying over to her, now having changed into a t-shirt "Oh Chris thank God, they won't tell me anything that's happening"

"I don't know much myself, Lilly just called she's gone into labour…I am heading up there now"

"Can I come up with you? I want to get an update on Scotty"

She nodded and the two of them stepped into the elevator.

Allie knocked on Lilly's door, pushing it open "Lil, are you alright?"

Lilly nodded "My water broke, the baby is coming"

"Is Chris on her way?"

Lilly nodded "I called her she's leaving the triplets with Karmen"

"I am sorry Lilly, about everything that's happening"

Lilly shook her head "don't be, it's not your fault"

"You want me to get you something? Ice chips?"

Lilly shook her head "no, but could you make sure that Scotty's Doctor knows I am here, I want to know the minute Scotty is out of surgery"

Allie nodded "definitely"

The door opened again and Chris walked in with Jack right behind her "Oh Lil are you ok?"

Lilly nodded "yeah, just a little nervous I guess"

"I better get back up to Mike; make sure that he has something to eat"

"Can I go up with you?" Jack asked Allie "He's my partner, I need to know that he's gonna be ok"

Allie nodded "Sure, I'm sure my husband and parents-in-law would like to thank you for saving Scotty"

Jack shook his head "I didn't really do much" Jack insisted "did what any guy would do"

Chris kissed her boyfriend's cheek "you're just being modest baby"

"I just want to know how he's doing"

Allie nodded again said goodbye to Lilly and left the room.

"I bought your hospital bag, figured you may need it"

"Thanks Chris" Lilly said softly, taking the bag from her "how were the triplets when you dropped them off?"

"They were excited about the baby, looking forward to seeing their brother or sister"

"It's a girl Chris, the Doctor that examined me upstairs didn't realise I didn't know the sex and he let it slip"

Chris smiled "A girl, that's great Lilly"

Lilly suddenly laughed as she pulled out something from the overnight bag that Scotty had clearly placed in it.

"What is that?" Chris asked

Lilly grinned "Its Scotty's baseball trophy from high school"

"High school? What's that in there for?"

"When we were at Lamaze classes the instructor said a focus object was a good way to control your breathing and help manage the pain, guess since Scotty's been hoping for a boy he wanted me to think about baseball while I was giving birth"

Chris chuckled, taking the trophy from her sister "maybe one sports crazed kid wasn't enough for him"

Lilly winced again as another contraction washed over her and Chris reached out to take her hand "Just breath Lil, here" she placed the trophy down on the table that hung over the bed

Lilly let out a laugh that was quickly covered with a groan as her contraction intensified and she started to breath and deeply as she could like they practised in Lamaze, only in all their practising had been done with Scotty beside her, breathing with her, rubbing her back.

Lilly fought back tears as the contraction eased off and she leaned back in the pillows "he's such an idiot" Lilly whispered "why did he have to be there today Chris? He could have begged off escorting the witness to the DA's office, his parental leave was starting tomorrow, he could have been home with me and he wouldn't be lying upstairs on a table, fighting for his life"

"I know Lil, but its Scotty we are talking about, he wouldn't have just let someone else bring his case in"

"But he should be here for the birth of his daughter Chris"

"I know, but I bought a video camera. When he wakes up he'll be able to watch it" Chris held up a camcorder and Lilly smiled.

Lilly's labour progressed rather slowly, after an hour and a half of painful contractions Dr Palmer had examined her and told her that she was only at 6cm and she groaned in frustration.

"I know Lilly, maybe if we get you up and moving gravity might help with those last 4cm"

So that's what she did, she and Chris paced around the hospital room, around the maternity floor and at one stage she made a brief trip back up to the surgical floor to see if there'd been any news on Scotty.

She'd found Mike, Allie and Rosa asleep in the lounge leaving Ramiro to wait for any news of his son.

"Where taking it in turns to sleep" he murmured quietly to her as she stuck her head in the room "how is my little neito?" Ramiro asked

"Being stubborn" Lilly replied and he chuckled.

"We better get back downstairs before Dr Palmer sends out a search party"

Ramiro grinned "Let me know when I can meet my new grandchild"

"As soon as she is born, Chris will come and tell you" Lilly replied and Chris nodded.

"Come on Lilly, it's almost time for Dr Palmer to check you again"

Lilly bid her father in law goodbye and returned to her room downstairs
