Chapter 28

Peter's POV

"Aylee, may I please speak with you outside for a moment?" Caspian says, his face blank. "But I haven't even-" That Aylee girl replies, trying to protest. "Now!" Caspian cuts her off and they both walk out through the double wooden doors. As they leave, we all turn and stare at Lillian, Carter and Jane for an explanation.

"Don't look at me! I thought she was dead." Carter replies, putting up his hands up in surrender to our stares.

"But she clearly isn't." Eustace points out none other than the obvious.

"Well we don't know. The last we heard of her was at her funeral. There is her headstone at the Telmarine castle in the church." Jane tells us and we look at Lillian with a questioning look.

"What do you know, Lil? She came with you here." Edmund asks her.

Lillian looks around and sighs. "It was one of the biggest secrets that has ever come from Caspian's father, the late King. A secret alliance was formed to protect Telermarines and Aylee from Caspian's uncle. I came here when I was five and I stayed here for a year while a negotiation was being made for an alliance, with the marriage of Caspian and myself."

"What?" Susan gasps, a glint of betrayal in her eyes.

"I am not finished, Susan. I left here when I was six. I did not fully understand what was going on and as you can image, I didn't much care about husbands at the age of six, neither did Caspian about wives. We were just playmates for a year. But this alliance wasn't done in secret, it was an arranged marriage that both countries approved of."

"So what happened, why aren't you married to Caspian?" Edmund asks with jealousy in his eyes and she takes his hands and smiles at him.

"I still don't know, like I said it was the biggest secret, why Aylee came to Archenland instead of Caspian. I was supposed to leave for the Telmarine castle when I was twelve and to marry him when I was fourteen. But less than a year after I got back, Aylee arrived at out our door, hiding under a hood with an advisor who left only a day after. I have been pestering her and Xavier, who seems to know well, for years for the answer, but neither of them told me. She never left the castle so no one knew of her. And if she did, it was hidden under a hood. She barely saw the sunlight and Xavier was always so protective of her. It was only after her uncle's fall that she ventured outside again. It was then I found out that they have been engaged since I was seven." Lillian explains to us all.

So Aylee's been through a lot, but that still doesn't explain how a sister of Caspian could hate Narnia so much.

"Why does she hate Narnians?" I ask from the corner of the room.

"I don't really know? She may be my best friend but she keeps a lot of secrets." Lillian replies, a sad look upon her face. Edmund wraps his arm around her and kisses her on her temple. I could see a glint of joy in my brother's eyes that has been absent since Lillian left us.

Caspian's POV

I march out of the room and turn to Aylee, who is standing there with her arms crossed.

"Are you trying to embarrass me, Caspian?" She shouts at me. I grab her by her forearm and pull her down another corridor, so we wouldn't be heard.

"I embarrassed you?" I scoff at her.

"Yeah, pulling me out of the room like that, in front of your friends. And for not telling me in advance who they are."

"I know of your beliefs on Narnians. I have had plenty of letters from you voicing them. You would never have believed me if I told you about the Kings and Queens of Old. And back in the room, don't tell me you weren't thinking of voicing those same opinions to them. Whether you have meant it or not, it would have hurt them." I reason with her as calmly as possible. I have received dozens upon dozens of letters from her, saying how she didn't approve of the Narnians, calling them barbaric and all sorts of insulting things.

"It's true they shouldn't be here, those Kings and Queens are probably just as barbaric as the rest of their people… oh wait, they're not real people!" She mocks with angry in her eyes. I take a step forward, staring her down.

"Aylee, they are my family. Say anything like that again, you will pay." I hiss lowly and quietly.

"Are you threatening me? I am your family, not them! I am your blood! I am your sister! Your little sister! I was sent away from you when I was six, I could barely remember what you looked like! My big brother, the one person I grew up thinking was going to protect me! But I was sent away, and I thought you failed me since I was sent away for protection. I had this dream that you would kill my uncle and come and get me. Then years past and all I got from you were letters and I finally figured out - you really had failed me. I thought you didn't care about me anymore because the mailing stopped 5 years ago for a whole few months. But when you came back, there were Narnian things on your side, and I didn't want to go back to you because I thought you picked them over me!" She yells at me, I could see tears swelling in her eyes and I could feel them in mine too.

"I didn't come and get you when the war was over because I thought you were happy, and I thought you liked Xavier? Besides, you and I both know that there was an alliance to protect you and this country then. But that alliance still stands, that's why Lillian brought armies because of the alliance you and Xavier help hold between the countries."

"I was happy, and I love Xavier, but I didn't have you, my big brother." Her voice is trembling and a tear falls down her face. She looks so vulnerable. It is so out of character, she never used to cry. I remember the time we played tag and she tripped and scrapped her knee. She just gave a quick glance at it, and said, "Cas, can we keep playing? I don't want to see the nurse." She didn't even cry when she left for Archenland, she just nodded and made jokes about being a married woman. I wrap my arms around her, holding her close, I can hear her cry in my shoulder. She hugs me back, she doesn't cry for long and in no time, I cannot hear her crying anymore.

"Well I am here now, Aye. Just please keep your opinions about the Narnians to yourself. Besides, you might find that you like them."

She comes out of the hug with a laugh. "I highly doubt that, but we should go back in. I am sure your fiancé wants to meet me."

Peter's POV

Once Aylee and Caspian walk back in the room, they talk to everyone and we all sat for ages in the library until one by one, people left for bed. I was the last one to leave. I get up to leave and grab a book from one of the many selves along the way. As I turn a corner, I see a shadow at the end of the row. I pull my sword from my side and proceed carefully towards the shadow. I am less than a meter away from the shadow when it turns around and lets out a tiny shriek of fright, making me jump.

"Aylee?"

"Yeah!" She says sarcastically, spotting me as she comes into the light. "And it's Princess."

I raise an eyebrow at her words and she glares at me.

"Could you put the sword away, now? I don't appreciate being killed by an idiot."

I raise my other eyebrow and smirk. "That's no way to ask something of a King. Weren't you taught manners when you were younger?"

"Oh that's right, you're the magnificent one, aren't you? You must really think a lot of yourself, don't you?" Her eyes scanning my body up and down as if implying something.

"Aslan gave me that title." I tell her.

"Right the imaginary Lion friend. You really are as bad as the Telmarine's." Aylee states with a laugh.
"Who are you?"

"What do you mean? I am the Princess Aylee." She stares at me as though I was stupid and I roll my eyes at her.

"I mean, I have never heard of you. Caspian has never said anything. I have seen your headstone at the Telmarine castle. Why did you go to Archenland?" I ask her out of pure curiosity and because I didn't trust her for a second.

Her eyes darken to glare at me. "That is none of your business."

I think it is. After all, it does affect my family and my country." I reply, glowering back at her.

"It isn't your country anymore. It's my brother's, so I don't need to tell you anything, no matter how magnificent you are."

I stare down at her and she stares back. Aylee breaks the eye contact first and gives me a false smile. "Well I must be going now." She says before turning and nearly skipping out the room. I stand there glaring after her back. I certainly didn't trust her a moment ago but I absolutely hate her now.
