Chapter 28
"Carol"
Carol whirled from the blackness surrounding her, to find herself in a small room. She gasped as she took in her surroundings.
A wall of aquariums completed one side of the room. Each filled with fluid as a zombified head bobbed and snarled within them. Drawn to the wall she walked closer. The light in the room cast an eerie blue glow as the heads cast a shadow in the corner.
She knew he was there, hiding in the darkness, afraid of the light even in his own domain. She was drawn towards one of the heads, her fingertips touching the glass in sorrow.
"This man was an innocent." She said to the shadows. "You murdered him and put him on display...why?"
He shifted in his chair watching her. "He had something I needed" the man said, the superficial charm dripping through his words.
"Cut the bullshit Phillip." Carol turned facing him.
He threw back his head and laughed leaning forward so Carol could see him in the light. One eye socket empty. Hideous in the absence of the eye.
"You're threatened, by the light, by those you see it in." She said firmly.
"Now if that were true, why would I want you? Hmmmm? Sweetheart you practical glow nuclear, your auras so bright." He said grinning at her in question.
"Because I'm stronger than you." She said simply.
He laughed sitting back in his chair. Carol walked forward looking in more detail at the heads in the aquariums. "You know it, I know it, I can feel it. You know there so much more that I can do than you. And you want power, control. It's what every man who has something to hide wants." She said harshly.
Phillip was suddenly next to her, his hand menacing at her throat.
"What makes you think you could ever control me?" Carol asked unafraid.
"Well now" Phillips hand trailed down her neckline. "What if I were to add a new head to the wall, how bout that redneck you seem to like so much? What about every member of that group of yours? We could add a new wall. What do you think? That boy would look good over there." Phillip smirked looking at her face.
"Phillip" she whispered sliding her hand up to his neck and tightening her grip on his neck " Phillip Blake 48, insurance salesman, lifelong coward, scared of yourself, what you saw inside you...you got her killed didn't you?" Carol asked queitly.
He pushed back on her hands trying to escape "Shut your mouth." He hissed turning from Carol.
"Penny was the only one you loved and it was your fault wasn't it?!" She yelled in his face.
"Shut your mouth!" He screamed flinging out his hands. "I'll kill them ALL, I'll tear that redneck apart limb from limb if you don't join me!" He yelled
"And I'd die first." She took a gun she saw lying on a table grabbing it putting it up to her temple.
He snorted "That's useless in the midst."
"Maybe so." She grinned biting her lip, "or maybe you have no view of my powers. That's what separates us. If I think at any moment you might win, I wouldn't hesistate ...Would you?" She asked staring at him intensely.
"Come to me, or I'll annihilate that prison, ...the baby." He whispered.
She closed her eyes, Daryl's panicked face coming in to view.
" I've seen your death, in some many ways Phillip. So many threads of time leading to one destination. You can't outrun it. It's coming for you. You see it too...don't you? My power won't save you. Nothing can, you've gone to far, you let evil in. Every path you take will lead to your death." She closed her eyes as images flashed through her head, a movie playing at top speed.
"I've seen all the possibilities. Soon Phillip, your time is soon." She whispered.
"That redneck is dead!" He yelled.
"No" she said softly "But he'll be there when you die."
She could feel Daryl's voice, calling to her suddenly.
"Wake up Angel, come on." He was muttering "Don't leave like this again."
She turned to Phillip "I have to go, don't call me to you again...I'm sorry Phillip, you let it change you." She whispered before turning towards Daryl's voice calling her and opening her eyes.
