Chapter Twenty Seven

The second Chasity stood up to go use the bathroom she immediately noticed something was seriously wrong. She glanced down and immediately knew she was in big trouble. Her pajama bottoms were completely covered in blood and the sporadic cramping she had been having throughout the day had suddenly gotten much worse. Trying not to panic Chasity did her best to reach across the bed and shake Jon without moving from the spot she was currently standing in. When he didn't respond to the light shaking, and the cramping got even worse, that's when she started to panic. "Jon, get up," she frantically called as she shook his shoulder for the third time, harder than the first two, finally causing him to stir.

Being disoriented from sleep, Jon rubbed his eyes and glanced at the clock sitting on the bedside table. "Chas, it's five in the morning, why are you waking…" he trailed off as he quickly studied her freak-stricken face. Then he glanced down and noticed the blood covering her pants. Nothing else needed to be said. That was all the answers he needed. Jumping up he grabbed the nearest part of his jeans he could find and stepped into them. He had no idea if they were clean or dirty, but at the moment he didn't really care. Quickly zipping and buttoning them, he fastened the belt around his waist and grabbed both his and Chasity's phones and shoved them into each of his front pockets before grabbing the car keys and leading Chasity out to the car. At this point, they both knew there was no need for words, and all their focus was currently on getting to the hospital as fast as humanly possible.

The car ride was just as silent as the quick walk to the car had been. Both of them had a million thoughts running through their mind; the biggest one being what would happen if they lost Kaleb? Up to this point, Chasity's pregnancy had been fairly uneventful. There was no reason to think this type of thing would or could happen, and yet here they were racing to the hospital in fear the baby they'd both come to love in the last several months was in serious trouble.

The blood still soaking the front of Chasity's pants is what scared Jon the most. The fact she was still conscious was a surprise because the amount of blood she was currently covered in showed she'd lost a ton; more than Jon could ever remember seeing anyone lose. And given his past wrestling career path, he had clearly seen plenty of people; including himself, lose a ton of blood before. It wasn't something that usually made him nervous or queasy, for obvious reasons, but seeing the girl he loved most covered in her own blood was a heart stopping, stomach churning fright.

Pulling into the parking lot of the hospital and directly up to the front of the emergency room doors, he threw the car into park. "Has Kaleb moved at all," he asked. He wanted some type of reassurance; something that would reassure him the baby was okay, but Chasity shook her head no as she silently wiped fallen tears off her face. Jon sighed and quickly opened his door. "Stay here, I'm going to get a wheel chair. I don't want you walking anymore in your condition," Jon quickly told her as he hopped out of the car. Chasity didn't answer, nor nod or attempt to acknowledge what he'd just said in any way this time. That scared Jon. He knew it could be a sign she was starting to go into shock from the server blood lose she'd experienced. Deciding not to waste another moment, he ran into the hospital and ran up to the nearest nurse's station. "My girlfriend is seven months pregnant and she woke up about twenty minutes ago covered in blood. I need help! I think she's beginning to go into shock from the loss of blood; she's sitting in the car."

Jon felt helpless as he watched two nurses take off toward the parking lot. Following behind them a few seconds later, he helped them shift Chasity from the car into the wheelchair they had grabbed. "Go park your car so it doesn't get towed. We're gonna take her to the maternity ward and turn it over to the staff more equipped for this kind of emergency. You can meet her on the fourth floor," the one emergency room nurse explained informed him, giving him a quick sympathetic smile before following the other nurse and Chasity back into the hospital.

Jon wasted no time doing as she had told him to. He wasn't usually one for following directions well, or asking for help, but this was all new to him. It felt weird receiving assistance from a third party, but he knew for Kaleb and Chasity's sakes he had done the right thing by turning things over to the doctors and nurses as quickly as he possibly could.

Jon hopped into the elevator after parking the car and went up to the fourth floor just as the nurse had instructed him to do. Approaching the nurse's desk there he gave the nurse sitting there a quick smile. "I believe my girlfriend was just brought up here. I had to park the car, the ER nurse told me to just come up as soon as I was done." The maternity ward nurse gave him a quick smile.

"What's your girlfriend's name?"

"Chasity Gains." The nurse quickly typed Chasity's name into the database and waited a moment for results to pop up.

"She is in room 405. I don't know much information other than that, but you can go to the room and a doctor will be in momentarily." Jon nodded.

"Thank you. Which direction am I going in?" The nurse quickly gave him the directions to Chasity's room and Jon wasted no time getting there. Pushing open the door he stepped inside and saw Chasity lying in the bed. He wasn't away from her that long, but it was apparently long enough for them to get her into a room and hooked up to an IV and a fetal heart monitor. She looked even paler now than she had when he helped the nurses get her out of the car, and that fact alone scared him. Grabbing her hand he sat down in the chair that was positioned beside the bed. If there was any good news to come from any of this so far it was the fact that the fetal heart monitor was registering that Kaleb was alive and apparently doing quite well, judging by the sounds coming from the monitor and what the nurse had informed him of upon his arrival into the room. For now, Jon would take comfort in that.

The blood lose had really did a number on Chasity. They had been forced to give her a blood transfusion as soon as they had stabilized her and made sure the bleeding had completely stopped and that Kaleb was okay. But she was still pretty out of it; other than the tears that continued to stream down her face. Jon spent hours at her bedside squeezing her hand and talking to her trying to get her to snap out of it, but it was like the shock had completely taken over her system and body. A doctor had been in to check her a few times to check her vitals and the monitors monitoring Kaleb's vitals, but hadn't said so much as a word to Jon, and it was beginning to annoy him. The nurses had told him it appeared the blood Chasity had lost was due to the fact she was beginning to go into preterm labor, but they had gotten the contractions to stop and everything was going well as of now. But that didn't comfort him much because she was still totally out of it, except for the tears.

Dropping Chasity's hand he gave her a quick kiss on the forehead and even though he knew she wouldn't respond, he told her he'd be right back. Walking out to the nurse's station, he smiled at the on-duty nurse that was sitting at the desk. "Can you do me a really big favor? Get me the doctor that is currently in charge of Chasity Gains care and ask him to come to her room, please," he questioned. A concerned look came across the nurse's face, prompting Jon to continue. "She and the baby are both fine at the moment. I just want to know what is going on. He's been in her room at least three times since she was brought in, and I've been there every time he's been in, yet he hasn't said so much as a word to me. I'm beginning to feel like I'm being ignored and I don't appreciate it," Jon informed her. "The nurses have been wonderful. They're the only ones that have told me anything, and while I do appreciate that, I want a doctor to explain things to me." The nurse gave him a sympathetic smile and a quick nod as she picked up the phone to page the doctor in question. "Thanks," Jon said, walking back down to Chasity's room as he heard the nurse page the doctor to room 405.

Reentering Chasity's room, he retook the seat beside her bed and awaited the doctor's arrival. He wished Chasity's original OB/GYN was on duty today. It would make things so much easier because she wouldn't be afraid to talk to Jon about whatever it is that's going on; as it appears this doctor is. Hearing a knock on the door Jon turned his head as the doctor stepped into the room with Chasity's chart in his hand again. "Mr... I'm sorry, I never did catch your name," he said realizing Chasity's chart didn't say she was married. Jon rolled his eyes and stood up.

"You never caught my name because you haven't bothered to even acknowledge my presence. But you can just call me Jon," Jon snidely replied. He wasn't about to play nice with this jackass. He was going to try, until the smartass came in and said he never caught Jon's name. "Now, if you could kindly tell me what the hell is going on with my girlfriend, and why she woke up in a puddle of her own blood and is now apparently in a state of shock that for some reason she's having trouble coming out of, despite the blood transfusion she received, that would be great," Jon informed him.

The doctor must have sensed Jon's annoyance and realized what a jackass he had been because from there on out he was as polite as could be. "Well, I am Doctor Stevens in case you should need me later," he informed Jon. "As for the reason I haven't really said much to you since your girlfriend's arrival, it's because I'm not exactly sure what's going on. The one monitor we hooked Ms. Gains up to upon her arrival shows she was having some fairly heavy contractions when she was first brought in, but in the last couple of hours they have lightened, and then completely stopped, so that's no longer a major concern at this point," Doctor Stevens explained looking at the paper hanging from the monitor he was referring to. "As for the bleeding, that was due to the fact she was going into labor, but it never should have been as heavy as it was," he explained as he continued to examine other monitors Chasity was hooked to. "Given that it has stopped and we did give her a blood transfusion to bring her blood count back to normal I am honestly not sure why she's still in a state of shock," he explained, the baffled state obvious in his voice tone. "Although, I'm not sure it's shock. It may have been before the transfusion, but I don't think it is now," doctor Stevens explained. Jon gave him a confused look. "I'm not a psychiatrist, so I can't be positive, but given the fact she has been actively crying since she was brought in, I think she is blaming herself, and she's depressed due to this experience, so she's shut herself down so she doesn't need to talk to anybody or explain herself."

Jon understood what the doctor was saying and he could see what he meant. If that was indeed the case Jon hated it. This wasn't her fault. It just happened. Neither of them could've seen it coming. Or at least, that's what the nurse had told him earlier when he said he should've seen it coming due to Chasity's demeanor change that day.

"I am currently awaiting a call back from Doctor Mitchel to see how she wants me to proceed from here, given Ms. Gains is originally her patient," Doctor Stevens informed Jon, breaking into his thoughts. He nodded in understanding. "For now, we'll just have to wait it out," he said again checking the reading from the fetal heart monitor. "The baby looks perfectly healthy; at least from what we can tell from the heart monitor. Once Doctor Mitchel lets me know what she wants done next we may know more, but until then we just cling to the good news of the fetal heart monitor."

"So in short, as of now you have no idea what's truly going on?" Doctor Stevens nodded.

"Unfortunately at the moment, that is correct. Without doing further testing I can't be sure and don't want to try to guess because I don't want to guess wrong. That's just asking for a lawsuit," Doctor Stevens joked. "But in all seriousness, I can tell you that given Ms. Gains is only seven months along and her uterus is already starting to contract, I would say it's a fairly safe bet to say the baby will likely be born early," Doctor Stevens said, dropping the paper he was examining again from one of the monitor back down to rest against the front of the table the machine was positioned on. "I'm uncertain of how early at this point because she's no longer contracting. Which is actually a good thing because it's too early for him to be born right now. However, I can tell you he will more than likely end up being an early delivery. If we can hold her delivery off until week thirty-seven it'll be most beneficial to the baby," Jon ran his hand down his face. This was not the news Jon wanted to hear. Not at all.

There was so much more Jon wanted to ask him, but movement out of the corner of his eye caused him to hold his tongue as he turned his head in Chasity's direction. She was still super pale from the earlier blood lose, but her pupils weren't as dilated as they had been earlier, there were no more tears running down her face, and she was looking somewhat frantically around the room. Spotting Jon, she mumbled something incoherent before clearing her dry throat and trying again. "What is going on?" Jon gave her a sympathetic smile and sat back down to grab her hand.

"Nobody is sure. They're waiting for Doctor Mitchel to call so they can see what they should do next," Jon quickly informed her.

"But Kaleb is okay, right," she asked, her free handing going flat against her still rounded stomach as her eyes darted between Jon and the doctor standing at the foot of her bed. Doctor Stevens gave her a reassuring smile.

"I'm Doctor Stevens and yes, as of now, Kaleb is fine," he informed Chasity. "I would like to do an ultrasound, but I want to get Doctor Mitchel's approval before I do it because you're originally her patient. However, she may decide to tell me she wants to do it, as she has the afternoon shift here at the hospital today, so she'll be in to see you at some point soon," he informed her. "In the meantime, get some needed rest and I'll be back in, in about an hour to check your vitals as well as Kaleb's," he said before departing from the room.

It was several hours later when Doctor Mitchel came into Chasity's room. Doctor Stevens had come in once a couple of hours prior to do one last check over Chasity and Kaleb and inform them that Doctor Mitchel decide she'd like to do the ultrasound, so she'd be in to see Chasity as soon as she arrived and got settled. "Hello Chasity, Jon," she said acknowledging both parties. "How are things going?" Chasity shook her head.

"Not so good. Apparently Kaleb wants out too early." Doctor Mitchel chuckled.

"So I've heard. Well, in about a half hour I'm gonna come in with an ultrasound tech and we're going to try to figure out what's going on. Your contractions have stopped thanks to the medicine the on-call doctor, Doctor Stevens, started you on immediately after your arrival, and the bleeding was done before you arrived, but we do still have to figure out why you lost the amount of blood you lost," she informed them. Chasity nodded as Jon squeezed her hand.

"Doctor Stevens told me Kaleb would definitely be born early. Is that true," Jon questioned. It wasn't that he didn't trust the other doctor's information, just that he trusted Doctor Mitchel more. Doctor Mitchel shrugged.

"It's a possibility because Chasity's uterus is already contracting that he will be born early, but there's also a possibility because we got the contractions to stop that he won't be born until he's due," she told them. "But the uterus can always start contracting again. The medication really is only a temporary fix. In all honesty, only time will truly tell. For now, I'm not worried about an early delivery, but I do want to figure out why Chasity lost more blood than she should have," Doctor Mitchel explained. "I'll be back in, in a little bit," she told them as she placed Chasity's chart back on the outside of her door and left the room.

Chasity and Jon sat talking about nothing and everything just to keep their minds off their current situation until Doctor Mitchel walked back into the room followed by an ultrasound tech. "Alright, so let's see what's going on with little Kaleb, shall we," she asked with a smile as the tech set up the machine. Chasity adjusted herself in the bed and lifted the hospital gown they had her wearing as Doctor Mitchel squirted the ultrasound gel onto her now bare skin. The tech used the wand on the machine and spread the gel around as Doctor Mitchel watched the screen for any abnormalities that may show up and be concerning.

But she couldn't find anything. That was both good and bad. Good because it meant there was nothing wrong with Kaleb; he was completely healthy, but it was bad because it also meant they still didn't know why Chasity had bled out as much as she had. Doctor Mitchel even checked for signs of the Placenta Previa – which is where the baby's placenta partially or completely blocks the cervix and can cause server bleeding when the uterus contracts. But there was no sign of that at all, either. It was a total mystery, but because it was one that didn't necessarily put either mother or baby in life threatening danger at the moment Doctor Mitchel decided to let it go unless Chasity had another bout of bleeding in the near future. For now they would consider her and Kaleb stable and just watch for signs of contractions or bleeding in the next several days. That was really all they could do for now. It was just a waiting game at this point.
