Chapter 27: Snow day
"Speech"
'Thoughts'
Roy Pov
"One of the very best reasons for having children is to be reminded of the incomparable joys of a snow day." – Susan Orlean
'Joys of a snow day, HA. Nothing says joy like having to shovel tons of snow in cold weather. Not to mention the colds you get with runny noses and high temperatures.' I thought as I finally completed shoveling the driveway. The first freak storm of the year had hit some point last night. Work was cancelled on account of the blocked roads and school was out as well. I wanted nothing more than to sit and relax but if I didn't shovel Riza would shoot me. So I did. I pulled off me wet clothes and changed into something more comfy and proceeded into the kitchen. Riza was drinking her morning coffee, I sat down next to her. Black Hayate was curled under the kitchen table, 'Dogs are lucky they have fur to stay warm,' I thought. I grabbed my own coffee and looked out the back windows. Al was outside with his friends doing what kids do with snow. From the looks of it, I'd say they were having a hard core snow ball match. The only thing missing was Ed.
"Where is Ed, I thought he'd be out playing with Al?" I asked.
Riza took a sip of his coffee, "He's in his room, I asked if he wanted to go out but he wouldn't answer me. Maybe he'll talk to you."
I sighed, I took the hint and got up and went upstairs. Sure enough Ed was in his room staring at his bed. I walked in and sat next to him, he didn't look up. "Hey kido you ok?" I asked.
He didn't look up but he did nod his head slowly. He began picking at the fuzz on his bed.
I frowned, 'Something's wrong.' Al outside playing and having fun, don't you want to go have fun to?" I said, he still didn't look up. "Sara said it didn't snow much in Risembool, don't you want to try, it can be really fun."
Ed looked up at me, "Cold hurt, no feel good."
'That's right the cold must not feel good for his automail.' But that shouldn't stop him. "Well we can get you some warm clothes, that way so the cold won't hurt you. I'm pretty sure we have some of Al's old snow stuff somewhere you can wear those."
Ed grabbed on to my arm, and looked up at me, "You go out with me, not go alone." He asked.
CRAP! 'I just got in from the cold now Ed's asking me to go out with him. I can't say no though, the poor kids probably scared.' I sighed, "Alright, I'll go with you, but first we got to get you warmer clothes."
It took me a couple minutes to locate Al's old snow wear but I did none the less. I helped Ed out with most of his clothes. We got on his snow pants, and boots, then a very puffy coat. Then a hat and scarf and to complete the outfit gloves. It was cold out so I wasn't taking any chances. After I helped him get dressed I got my stuff back on. They weren't too wet so I should be fine.
We were finally ready and so headed out into the back yard. Ed grabbed onto my arm and I lead him out into the snow. The first thing we did was build a snow man. Ed made the head while I did the body. Al and his friends also joined in and built their own so we had a whole snowman village in the back yard. We managed to find branches for arms and rocks for the eyes and buttons. We didn't have any carrots so we improvised what we could. I have to say the snowmen looked great.
Al and his friends started up another round throwing snowballs. This time they made forts to protect themselves. Ed joined in which made me a little nervous at first but he seemed to enjoy it so it was ok. I stayed out of the fight and watched, I didn't feel like getting hit with snow.
Eventually the forts were forgotten and it became an all-out battle in the back yard. I even got dragged into it though I don't remember how. At some point I became the main target and I have to say it was kind of fun. It was a little while later that making snow angles became the new activity and I was grateful for that. 'I swear I have snow down my shirt.'
I was sitting on the porch watching Ed and I have to say it made me smile. He was laughing and smiling, 'I don't think I've ever seen him this happy before.' The more I thought about the more I came to realize that yes, snow days weren't so bad. Seeing Ed laughing and smiling like that it makes it worth it.

The rest of the day was spent inside, it became too cold to stay out any longer. Riza made hot chocolate for everyone and they all gathered and talked in the living room, warming themselves by the fireplace. Al's friends eventually went home and it was almost bed time for everyone else. Roy was sitting in the bathroom with Ed while he took a bath. Ed was going to get his automail checked by Sara tomorrow so Roy made sure that Ed cleaned it good. After the bath Roy helped him dry off and then get ready for bed. Finally Roy checked over Ed's automail for loose screws which he didn't find any.
"Did you have fun today?" Roy asked Ed.
Ed got comfortable on his bed and nodded. Black Hayate jumped up and snuggled with him. "It fun, had fun."
"That's good, it's almost winter so we'll be having a lot more snow at some point." Ray said.
Ed nodded, "More snow. Dad play with Ed in snow again?"
Roy chuckled, "Of course, just try to take it easy on me next time. It's not fun getting snow in your clothes."
Ed laughed. "Ok." He bundled up under his covers and sighed. "Night daddy."
Roy smiled, "good night kido." He got up and turned off his light and headed to his own bed. Hopefully tomorrow would be a good day as well.
Location: Somewhere in central
Two people sat in a dark room, one was sitting at a desk the other standing by a door.
"What do you plan to do?" the one by the door asked.
"I'll have to get rid of his guardian first, it won't be easy but we must if we want to be able to get at the boy," the other man said.
The man by the door smiled. "I think I know what to do, just leave it to me. I'll have him out of the way soon. You'll see."
"You better, It's been far too long, and I'm not about to let this fail anytime soon. Now go, do your job, and don't get caught."
"Please," the guy in the doorway said. "Who do you think I am?" He smiled viciously. "Roy won't know what hit him."
Boom how was that for a chapter. Tell me cause I want to know. I figured since there has been a lot of snow here I would do a chapter about playing in snow. I personal hate snow, only cause I have to shovel it But hey when your a kid its fun. ( stupid kids -~- ) haha jk. Lots of stuff coming up in later chaps so try to keep up. and if you have questions don't be afraid to ask. Remember review and I'll see you next time.
