Blood Sharing

Chapter 28- You+Me

Song: You+ Me "You and Me"

A:n: Well, when this fic started it was the beginning of season 4 and now here we are at season 6. I think the end is in sight and I've planned out the next bit of chapters to help wrap the fic up. I hope you'll keep reading and I hope you'll enjoy it. I've been getting frustrated because a lot of stuff in my fic keeps happening on the show. I was floored with how many 'coincidences' there are and them bringing in the Salvatore Mom just killed all my ideas and inspiration. I'm trying to stay original with my ideas so you'll have to forgive overlap. For new readers, a lot of my chapters came out before different plot points in the show. Anyway, that's my rant.. let's get to it. Thanks for reading along with me this far! Please stick with me until the end. Hard to believe Elena is leaving the show. It'll give me good ideas for future fics I bet.

It had been two weeks since the incident on the street. The little girl who had been rescued had taken up residence with Caroline's mother. Caroline had intended to wipe the child's memory so she wouldn't be traumatized but the little girl had asked her not to. Caroline was sitting now, with Stefan, lost in thought over the evening and how the events played out.

The little girl was 9 and her name was Trinity. She'd explained to Caroline and Stefan that the vampire had stolen her from the foster care home where she'd been staying. She'd had a really rough life up until that point, and had been in foster care because her father was a werewolf. Stefan has suspected from the tone of the conversation that he'd killed Trinity's mother. Trinity didn't want to forget the supernatural world. Because she was a part of it, and wanted to remember the events so she could stay safe. Caroline had protested but after some thought; Stefan agreed it was for the best. They'd enlisted the help of Liz to find the girl a place to stay, but in the two weeks since everything went down Liz had been temporarily fostering Trinity. Caroline and Stefan would make visits; even Damon did at one point though Trinity didn't much remember him on account of being so weak. The one Trinity really wanted to see- the angel- thought it best to stay away.

Caroline had been getting daily updates from her mother. Trinity was now in school, healing well, and adjusting. Liz had put her on the list for fostercare but it was a long wait and it was expected Trinity would be staying with her for at least a month.

"What do you think Caroline?" asked Stefan.

Caroline snapped out of her haze momentarily. "Huh? Sorry… I was.."

"…lost for a second?" offered Stefan. "Yeah, you've been like that a lot these days."

"Yeah. I'm just worried about… well.. everything." Caroline admitted. "Elena has become a recluse hiding away. She won't even let Damon sleep in the same room anymore."

"Which is why we need to keep looking for answers." Replied Stefan, motioning to the book in his lap. "Elena is scared to hurt anyone. She lost control-"

"She didn't lose control." Came Damon's voice from the doorway. Caroline and Stefan looked up. "It was taken from her. It's like there's two different Elenas. Ours. And the angel who wants to take over. The angel took control and Elena is terrified it will again." He joined their powwow on the couch adjacent to them. "Look at you two all cute and cozy."

"Get real Damon." Groaned Caroline tossing a pillow at him. He dodged with a smirk.

"You really think it's like two people in there?" asked Stefan.

"I'm 99% sure. If she'd just blood share with me I'd know for sure. But she's too afraid." Explained Damon cautiously, watching their reactions.

"You haven't blood shared in this whole two weeks?" asked Caroline a bit surprised.

"No." Damon cast his eyes down. "She doesn't have much of my power left to draw on anymore. It's driving me crazy but I can't exactly force it on her." He'd waited for Elena to be ready to blood share before, back when she lost her memory. But this seemed different. He'd been more hopeful back then. "I think she's afraid to let me speak to it. She's afraid it'll take over and she's afraid of what it might say." He admitted.

Stefan nodded thoughtfully. "According to the research we've done on angels, they have the power to create or destroy. I think that explains how she was able to bypass our daylight rings along with killing that vampire… but still heal Trinity."

"Trinity… how is the little scamp?" asked Damon.

Caroline raised an eyebrow. "Damon, caring about someone who isn't himself or Elena?" she teased.

"Elena worries about her. She wishes you would have erased her memory." Damon explained.

"Listen we talked about this-" started Stefan but Damon interrupted.

"I know I know.. and I agree. I just wish Elena could see it. I think she feels like more of a monster now than she ever did as a vampire. She feels like one of Klaus's hybrids sort of. Two creatures in the same body. All she wants is the angel side out."

Stefan nodded. "From the book it seems like the only way Elena can expel the angel is to do what it wants. When its work is done, it'll go."

"Which is totally unhelpful. Since we don't want her to kill all vampires." Groaned Caroline flopping back in the chair and massaging her temples.

"Married life as great as you imagined?" teased Stefan.

Damon cast his head back and stared at the ceiling. "It's not what I imagined period. But I wouldn't trade it. I signed on for better or worse and I meant it." As if saying that suddenly gave him new purpose, Damon hopped up and headed out of the room up the stairs toward his room. Caroline gave a little head bob and shrug.

"She certainly brings out the best in him." Caroline admitted. "If you had told me a year ago this is what our lives would be- I'd have never imagined it."

"It sure has come full circle." Agreed Stefan.

Damon found Elena sitting in a rocking chair gazing out the window into the afternoon light. "She's doing okay?" asked Elena.

Damon nodded edging his way in through the door. "Yeah, Caroline's mom is still fostering her. She's starting school. Trinity is good. She's good because you were able to be good. You saved her." He reminded her.

Elena looked down and thoughtful. "Only because you snapped me out of it."

Damon took a step closer but Elena put her hand up to stop him. "I'll always be there to snap you out of it." Damon stated, and stopped where he stood.

"Please don't come closer. Every time a vampire comes close I can feel her- whoever she is- prickling just behind my eyes." Elena had taken to referring to the angel deity inside as a 'her'.

"I just told you I'll always be there to snap you out of it. Not just angel taking over rage Elena. I have to snap you out of this funk too. Don't you miss me?" offered Damon.

Elena looked up then, her grey eyes meeting his. He could see all the fear, sadness, loneliness, and resentment swirling and cumulating. He could see the brimming of tears and the spitfire too. "Of course I do." Her voice came out hoarse.

"I'm your husband Elena. I'm here for you. I need you, to let me, help you." Damon said, chancing another step forward.

"Your mother was right. I'm dangerous. I shouldn't be here." Elena answered. Maybe it was something in the way she said it, or a little tremble he detected. But something made Damon consider looking around the room. That's when he saw the suitcase at the foot of the bed.

"You can't leave!" yelled Damon, surprising her enough to jump a little.

"I didn't want to sneak out and have you worry." She admitted. "I've been trying to get up the courage to tell you for a few days. I need to get away for a while. Be away from the people I love so I don't hurt them. " Damon started to speak but Elena held up a hand to silence him. "You told me you'll support me, You asked me to let you help me. The best way you can help me is to let me go right now. Until we learn more about the angel. I don't want to hurt you or anyone else we love. If I go away then we can all keep researching until we figure it out and then I'll come back." Elena explained.

Damon wanted to interrupt again but Elena was looking out the window. "You're my soul mate Damon. You're my home." She turned then to look at him, now standing. "I will always come home." Damon couldn't stand it any longer. He dashed across the room with vampire speed and held her in his arms. At first she resisted but then she gave in and allowed him to hold her. "I just-"

"Shhh…" he said into her hair as she broke into sobs. His poor wife seemed to cry more now that they were married, than any time before. "I understand." He whispered softly. "I hate it- but I understand." He swayed a little; rubbing her back and kissing her hair.

"I'll text you. I'll call. I just don't want the angel to take over. I don't want to hurt anyone again." Elena cried.

"We have eternity." Damon agreed. "I don't want to be apart but it won't take us forever to solve this. I'll solve it as fast as I can so we can get you back." He assured her. "You can stay at the lake house. I'll call you every day. We'll arrange for a blood supply. We can do this right? For better or for worse!" he pulled away and held his hands on her shoulders, forcing her to look into his face. "We can do this Elena. I promise you we'll figure it out." He nodded and she nodded back.

You and me were always with each other
Before we knew the other was ever there
You and me, we belong together
Just like a breath needs the air

Damon had explained the situation to everyone. It didn't take much to convince them this was the best thing for now. Bonnie offered up the suggestion of trying a chant that acted like hypnosis to see if she could speak with the angel inside Elena. They all agreed it was a good idea but they'd wait until Elena was settled. Elena felt like normal Elena around everyone except vampires. Ever since that incident she'd feel energy stronger than even her blood bond flow through her and urge her to give in. She knew if she gave in- vampires would die. Vampires she loved.

All of the planning and discussion happened with Elena on one end of the room and everyone else on the other. Even being in the same room was hard for Elena. She wondered If this was how Rick felt. If this was how Jeremy felt. It was taking over everything- even her blood lust.

As Elena moved out to the car with her things, her friends and family watched from the doorway and porch. "Screw this." growled Damon pushing out between everyone and practically slamming into an Elena who didn't even get a chance to argue. He pressed his lips against her hard, and held her tight. She gave into the kiss while their blood bond momentarily over shadowed everything else. It was only when she had the urge from the angel inside pushing her that she broke it off. "We will fix this Elena." said Damon intensely staring at her. She nodded, fighting back the tears and got into the car with her things as quickly as she could and sped off.

Damon stood in the street watching while the car sped away until it was out of sight. Caroline moved to call out to him, but Stefan held her back and silently shook his head. Everyone watched on while Damon spun around and kicked a garbage bin across the drive way.

"We'll figure it out Damon." Said Jeremy.

"No, you'll figure it out. I'm following her." Damon yelled as he leaped into his car and squealed out of the driveway to the protests of everyone, leaving them in the dust.

"Well…" sighed Caroline. "Guess it's time to get to work then."

I told you if you called I would come runnin'
Across the highs, the lows and the in-betweens
You and me we've got two minds that think as one
And our hearts march to the same beat

Elena felt much better after she got away from everyone. A few hours on the road had her feeling like herself. Well, maybe not her human self- but her vampire self. She felt so normal that it was hard to imagine only a few hours earlier she was fighting the urge to rip out the throats of her friends. The only abnormal thing about her was the slight glow- that could be easily mistaken for the beautiful sunshine around her. She reached into the back and grabbed a blood bag while she drove, tearing it open with her teeth. Maybe she could handle this. Bonnie was going to come in a few days and in a careful environment they'd explore what was going on in her mind and maybe make contact with this 'angel' and figure it out. Yeah. She'd figure it out. Now that the urges weren't driving her mad and she'd gotten some air and blood, Elena chanced feeling hopeful.

Elena found herself once again wondering how Alaric and Jeremy dealt with the overwhelming urge to hunt. For her; this was a lot like being a new vampire again. Watching the sunrays peek through the clouds as she drove between the little pillars that reached the asphalt; little tears brimmed at the corner of her eyes. She felt normal. All it took was leaving everyone she loved behind.

She wondered about Trinity. Though Elena was pushing her away out of fear; she felt an overwhelming sense of urgency to protect the child. It was more than just the sometimes gut reaction women could have for young children- that quasi maternal thing. Elena literally felt like she would kill anyone who even looked at the girl the wrong way. She related to losing her parents too young, and being thrust into this supernatural world.

Elena was lost in thought when she pulled into the Lakehouse. It didn't take long to unload the car and open the place up. It was musty from the long winter; but opening a few windows seemed to help. She reflected on how many things had happened in this Lakehouse. She absentmindedly touched the wall and smelled the air. Her eyes narrowed into slits and she turned fast. "Damon." She practically hissed. But before she could react he'd dropped his bags at the door and was holding her face stiffly against his; kissing her hard.

They say everything it happens for a reason
You can be flawed enough, but perfect for a person
Someone who will be there for you when you fall apart
Guiding your direction when you're riding through the dark

Oh that's you and me

When they finally broke apart he pressed his forehead to hers; drawing circles on the back of her hands with his thumbs while he held them. "Did you really think I'd let you go?"

"I'm just surprised I didn't hear you on the road. I was too busy thinking." She answered. "But Damon…" she started to pull away and he wouldn't let her. "You shouldn't be here. I've already got the urge to rip out your throat…" she admitted. "And look…" she held up her glowing hands.

"Mmm I thought that just meant you liked me. I went years wanting to rip your throat out. Different reasons though." Damon winked and kissed the fingers of her hands.

Elena thought he could be annoying s hell when he was stubborn like this. But Damon's relentlessness when it came to being positive about something he wanted was almost admirable. Almost.

"Either way you'll have to put up with me for tonight. Big rain storm coming in and I wouldn't want to get in an accident." He chimed.

"You're a vampire." Elena rolled her eyes. Even though she really wanted him to stay; she really wanted him to go. She stepped away from him and began unpacking her bags.

"Well let's make a compromise." Suggested Damon. "I'll stay tonight. We go until tomorrow without you ripping out my throat or going angel Elena crazy; and I get to stay another. But if things get dangerous; I'll go home."

"But if things get dangerous I'll kill you." Replied Elena somewhat emotionless.

"No, you really won't." Damon said pulling her arm to make her turn around. "Remember what happened the last time I died? I think the actual pain of our blood bond would keep you from crossing that line. I think it would snap you out of it." He had a point.

"I didn't think of that. But I don't want to hurt you that bad either. It's like turning off my humanity. That's what it feels like. Someone else takes over and I only care about killing vampires." Elena admitted.

"Well, I know you've got precautions in that cupboard." Damon pointed. "I know all your hidey holes. Vervain, stakes… I can help myself if I need to. I won't like it. But I know if anyone can snap you out it's me."

Elena sat on the edge of the couch and her shoulders slouched. She was clearly wrestling with the idea. Damon sat next to her and brushed her hair out of her face. "I'm your husband. I need you to trust me." He looked at her with that curious cat like look he often had. The slightly squinted eyed, furrowed brow, upturned chin. It was his serious face. Elena believed him.

"Ok." She surrendered. "One night. We'll try."

You and me we're searching for the same light
Desperate for a cure to this disease
Well some days are better than others
But I fear no thing as long as you're with me

They sat on the couch for a while chatting. Making small talk. Damon hadn't been lying about the rain. Even vampires jump when thunder strikes unexpectedly and the two ended up giggling. "Come here for a minute." Damon said leading the way to the front door and pulling her along. "The rain hasn't started yet."

He opened the door and pulled her out onto the step. It was pitch black outside but smelled like rain. Lighting flashed in the distance and he pointed it out to her. Then he counted. Then the thunder came again and they laughed. "Use your senses, close your eyes. Listen. Smell." Damon instructed.

Elena did as he said. She stood holding his hand on that front door step in the dark. She closed her eyes. She let all the distractions and stress melt away for a moment. She could feel the dampness in the air. Elena could practically taste the rain and the sweet scent of the wet grass. She could hear birds, bats, and crickets. They were building to a sort of crescendo. Without realizing it she had stepped out further out from under the protection of the door step. Damon had even let go of her hand and was simply watching her as goose bumps trickled around skin. Vampires never really got cold, and goose bumps were usually a sign of heightened senses. He smiled. The chorus of creatures continued to build until they suddenly went silent. It was all of half a second when Elena registered the lack of sound and her face showed confusion. And then: the rain. It came down all at once with a new crash of thunder. It was warm, heavy, big fat raindrops. Despite herself, Elena laughed, raised her arms, and spun in a slow circle. Her husband knew her well. And she was literally glowing again.

They say everything it happens for a reason
You can be flawed enough, but perfect for a person
Someone who will be there for you when you fall apart
Guiding your direction when you're riding through the dark

Oh that's you and me. That's you and me.

"Damon?" Elena asked in a soft voice once she'd stopped spinning. Her light flickered.

"Yes my love?"

"Do you miss being human?" she asked.

"… I don't really remember much about being human anymore." Admitted Damon. His wife would sometimes get nostalgic about her human life. He did remember that when he was a baby vampire he would do the same thing.

"I know it seems like our senses are dulled when we're humans, we're fragile, mortal… but you don't miss it?" Elena prodded.

Damon shrugged. "I really don't care what I am…" he started, moving closer to her and wrapping his arms tightly around her waist. "…so long as I'm with you."

"That's so clichéd!" she teased and laughed as he buried his face in her chest. She stroked her fingers through his hair, finding the odd curl and twisting her finger through it.

"But oh so true." He said muffled through her chest. "If you were a werewolf I'd want to be one."

That said a lot. Damon tended to hate wolves. "If you were a witch that would be what I'd want. Hell if you got yourself turned into some kinda bug I guess I'd want to be that to." He laughed. "It's Stefan who misses humanity. Not me. I go where you go." She knew it was true. If the cure still existed… Stefan was the one who wanted it.

Elena was quiet as she held on to him in the rain. "Why all the thoughts my love?"

"It's the thing inside me." Elena admitted.

"You feel her?" Damon asked looking up at her from her own chest.

"Yeah, I do." Elena said softly again. Her voice above a whisper- like someone might over hear. "She wants all vampires to be gone. Scourge of the earth type thing. She's just below the surface because you're here. I feel her."

"Let me talk to her." Suggested Damon.

"She'll kill you. Well rather, she'll make me kill you. I'll become the world's worst wife. If I'm not already." Elena explained.

"Then don't let her come to the surface. Blood bond with me. Share with me. Let me in. I can handle her. She can't harm me there. If she does it'll kill you too. She's like a parasite and you're the host. She won't do anything that will harm you. Please Elena…" Damon insisted.

Elena was quiet as she considered it. "I just…" she stammered out and then looked at Damon with tears brimming in her eyes. "We've almost lost each other so many times now. I just can't lose you Damon. I can't be responsible for it."

"I've got a heart of stone." Damon reminded her, by pounding on his chest like Tarzan. "We've been over this. Maybe if we figure out more about her we can get her out and you and I can have our happily ever after." He cupped her face and brought his to her level. "We owe it to our future happiness to try."

Elena nodded. "Ok… but you restrain me. Vervain ropes. The whole deal."

Damon nodded. He knew when his wife was set on something, she wouldn't back down on that.

"Just remember, if you hurt me you feel it. The shared pain will snap you out of whatever hold she has on you. I'm sure of it."

"How sure?" Elena asked

"About 90%" Damon grinned with a waggle of his eyebrows. Elena narrowed her eyes and let him lead her inside where he pulled a chair into the middle of the room.

"You sure you aren't just going 50 shade on me?" he teased. Elena groaned and slumped into the chair.

"Make them tight."

"Oh, you are going 50 shades!" grinned Damon widely.

The Gilberts were ready for anything. Damon found all he needed in a storage closet, and was back in moments with a long sleeve shirt, gloves, and arm loads of ropes. He was still wet from outside… so was Elena. He didn't even think of changing. Blood sharing always made them warm. There was no point if they were just going to sweat anyway.

"This is going to sting." Damon said before kissing his wife's forehead and wrapping ropes around her wrists.

"50 shades is starting to sound appealing." Teased Elena through a wince.

Once she was secured as best as he could get her, Damon pulled a chair up next to her. He ran his fingers along the pale of her cheek. "You ready to do this love?" he asked, brushing her bangs out of her eyes.

"As ready as I'll ever be." Replied Elena as Damon sunk his fangs into his own hand to draw blood.

"That's my girl." Said Damon as he pushed the hand to her mouth.

Elena looked at him for one heavy second before her eyes darkened over and she pushed her lips against the blood. Damon already felt the rush and his canines ached for contact. He didn't waste any time latching on to her neck.

It was instantaneous. Like being sucked through a black hole. All the air came rushing out of Damon. He couldn't even feel Elena. He was just surrounded. Surrounded by light. Burning light. While every cell of his body screamed and felt like it was being torn apart. He was on fire.

"Damon?" he thought he heard Elena's voice but his ears were ringing now. Where was he again? He had no idea. Everything was spinning. "Damon!" it got louder now. He tried to lurch forward. Tried to remember what he'd come for. And then suddenly, everything burst and he was pulled back out. Panting on the floor, looking up at Elena who had clearly broken free of her bonds and was burning so brightly he had to shield his eyes.

"Damon. You were gone for hours. What happened? What did she do?"

It Damon a moment to remember what had happened and in those moments Elena pulled a blanket around herself blocking out some of the glow. He was disoriented but something came back to him fast. "Was I really gone that long?" he asked in a raspy voice.

"I couldn't get you to let go." Elena explained, he could hear the fear ringing in her voice. "I didn't even feel you. It was like I was in another room. Sound proof. She locked me out."

"It seemed like seconds…" Damon said pulling himself up to his feet. "It doesn't matter. None of it matters."

He staggered a bit and Elena put her arms out to brace him. He leaned against her.

"I know what she wants. I know what you can do."
