A new reality hit Olivia that Sunday morning. The sun peaked through the drapes of the master bedroom. She felt the warmth on her face. She paused for a minute to look over to a sleeping Fitz. Hair mussed on the pillow and mouth open while he snored. He was always such a sight to see when she got the chance to spend the night. She hated to stir him, but did it carefully . Pulling a robe around her, she drew the drapes to see the Washington skyline. The snow actually made a pretty picture on the ivory buildings, it almost brought an innocence to a town that was usually filled with dirty little secrets.
Looking down at her hand, she thought this was all a dream. She was ready to wake up in her little bed and find out that Mellie and Fitz were still married. Was this all really possible ? Was she engaged to the President of the United States and poised to be First Lady? Following her reverie, she moved her hand to the now flat stomach and the baby inside. Life, it was good.
Continuing her gaze, she felt two masculine hands on her shoulder. Turning around, she smiled and touched her lips with his.
"That was quite a night." Fitz grinned.
Olivia knew how easy it would be to fall back into his spell. But she knew she had work to do. The world would need to be informed that the first standing President was engaged. She also had to make them not hate her. She also knew that before the world knew, certain people had the right to know , that included Karen Grant and Cyrus.
"We have to stay focused. We have quite a precarious situation, Fitz."
"You sold the nation a President, twice. What is so hard?" he queried.
"Not everyone is going to see me the way you do. There are going to be people who will see me as a gold digger, after your money. There will be others who will say I used you to further my own ambition, and then there will be those who will just see me as a plain old home wrecker who broke up your marriage. I don't have an easy job ahead of me." She sighed.
Fitz sat her down on the bed to let her relax. She was stressing too much for his taste. "Take a breath, Liv. This isn't good for the baby.
"It's my job and I its what I do. Fix scandals. You have no idea what we are in for?" she panicked.
He put his arms around her and stated. "This is not your problem. It's ours. Remember, we're in this together now. We need a game plan and between you and me , we have some of the most brilliant minds in Washington. Everything is going to be fine."
"I think I need to talk to Karen first, no sense in putting it off." Fitz walked over to the dresser and put on a t shirt and sweats. Olivia had to keep herself from salivating as she viewed the large biceps that the blue shirt showed off. She thanked her lucky stars that this beautiful and intelligent man was hers now.
"Should I come with you?" Olivia asked curiously.
"Call your people and start working on the press release for tomorrow. I have a feeling it is going to be a long night. Also get ahold of Cy as well. We will need to schedule interviews with the media as well. He can bring Ella to keep Teddy company. I'll be over later." He leaned over to kiss her on the cheek. In a flash , he was out the door.
Standing in the door, he blew a breath and pushed his hand through his hair. He stared at the door for a minute before he knocked.
"Kare, it's Daddy." He yelled over the music. "Could I talk to you Pumpkin?"
Karen opened the door with the most innocent look. "Sure Daddy, come in." He entered the room to see the mélange of stuffed animals and One Direction posters on the wall. It looked like the typical teen age girls room. It pleased him because this is what he wanted all along. His eye caught a photo by her bed of her and Jerry at school. He still couldn't believe it. Gone.
He picked up the picture and looked at it. "You still miss him don't you?" he thought that this would be the best way to start an adult conversation with her. She took the frame from him. "We were like a team Daddy, the Grant kids. We stuck together because we thought everyone was scared of us being the President's kids. Not every kid was constantly being followed by the Secret Service."
He started to feel guilty for now offering choices to his kids for their lives. He had imposed being in the public eye on them without asking them. Now he was bringing another child in the world with the same restrictions. Add to that fighting parents, strangers constantly taking care of them, no permanent residence, and it was quite a life for a child.
He took his little girl in his arms and brushed her hair with his arm. "I am sorry honey for the kind of life you've had. I know constantly being watched isn't fun. But unfortunately for the job I have, there are a lot of people who think they can force me to do something by hurting someone I love. I know you would love to go to the mall and hangout with your friends without a detail tagging along."
"I know , Daddy. It does suck sometimes. But I am kind of used to it. I have had it for most of my life when we were in the Governors Mansion and then here." Karen admitted. She had sensed that her father was a little bit happier and less tense than when her mother was around. "I noticed that you are a bit happier now than before. Is that because of Olivia?" she curiously asked.
He knew this was the perfect time to break the news. "Well now that you mention it. I am happy Karen. Happier than I have been in quite a while. Olivia and I have been spending a lot of time together and I proposed to her last night. She will be moving into the Residence within the week." He braced himself for the explosion to come.
Karen broke her embrace and walked away. "Congratulations Daddy. I'm sure that she will make a fine replacement for Mother. She is intelligent, well educated, and beautiful." She said with no emotion and her head down.
"How do you feel about Olivia sweety?" Fitz asked point blank.
A smile did come to her face. "I like her, Daddy. She was so much fun when you were running for President . We would play games and eat junk food and watch chick flicks. Jerry actually had a crush on her and said he wanted to marry her. The only time I had a problem with her is when some dumb kids at school said that you were sleeping with her and cheating on mom. I knew that you and Mom weren't getting along but I didn't think you would ever cheat on her." Karen said emotionally.
Fitz knew he had to do some damage control of his own first. "Karen, you have to understand something . I never ever thought of cheating on your mom until Olivia. She just turned off her emotions to me and pulled away from me."
Karen asked point blank "Is that why she is with Uncle Andrew? Did she love him while we were in the Governor's mansion?"
Fitz knew he was getting into dangerous territory now. He had to choose his words carefully. "Apparently he has always had feelings for her. Their affair was fueled further when he joined the reelection campaign. When people are on the campaign trail, they work together and get very close. Relationships develop and…."
Karen stopped him "Oh my God. You fell in love with her during the first campaign didn't you?"
Fitz' face gave her all the answers she had the saddest eyes she had seen in a while.
"Your mother and I 's marriage had been dead for quite a while. She chose to seek affection elsewhere and I did as well. Now Mom has Andrew and I have Olivia. Mom is returning to politics and I am going to be a father again."
Now Karen couldn't believe any of this. "Why! Any other of my friends parents has a mid life crisis and it's the family secret. My father does and it's on the national news."
"I'm out the door, Liv" Cyrus said as he grabbed the bag and his briefcase. "We will handle this." He assured her as his phone beeped ."I've got another call coming in,Liv, I'll see you in a while." He clicked over to answer, "Cyrus Beane." He said. Ella was holding his hand.
It was a very ominious call. "Mr Beane, he's not dead." Then the call ended. Cyrus stood and pondered who had called him and who did they mean wasn't dead.
