Chapter 28 - Here With Me
After Jim left the pair decided to get as much rest as they could before shift, so Grissom set an alarm for 11:15, and they were soon to sleep. Sara's mind was clear at first, but after a few hours, she was in the midst of a struggle. She began sweating again, and whimpering in her sleep. At one point she jumped and woke Grissom out of his sleep. He shook her softly. "Honey? Honey. It's okay. Wake up. It's just a dream." He pulled her close and held her. "What was it?" She sniffled. "Natalie." Grissom's heart sank. "She can't hurt you anymore." Sara sighed. "I know, I know.. but this time… this time she took the baby."
Grissom sat up and pulled her even closer than before. He put his hand on her belly, and kissed her forehead. "I don't know what to tell you about the dreams. All I can say is that she won't hurt you ever again, and that when you wake, I'll be here. I'll keep you in my arms, and when you realize you aren't dreaming anymore, you'll know you're here with me." "I'm not worried about me anymore. I'm worried the dreams will affect the baby. What if he can see what I see? and feel what I feel? I mean he's already kicking like crazy." "If he can see what you see, and feel what you feel, then I guess he's just in there fighting Natalie off, I don't think you have to worry about that."
After Grissom had successfully reassured her, they fell back to sleep, and this time, all was peaceful… up until the point where the annoying alarm startled them. Grissom reached across the night stand and slammed his hand on the off button.
The two got up and changed for work, and soon they were off in Grissom's Denali, heading to the lab. Grissom couldn't help but notice that Sara looked worried. "Are you okay?" She looked up at him and nodded. "I'm just worried about telling everyone tomorrow." He laughed. "You're too cute. Why are you worried? They're your friends." "I don't know…" The truth is, she really didn't. Maybe because she thought they would think she wouldn't be a good mother… she didn't know.
They walked into the lab, signed in, and Sara headed to the break room while Grissom went to his office for assignments. She was surprised to see Nick already in. "Hey Nicky." He flashed her that Texan smile. "Hey Sara. How you doin'?" "I'm good." Sara nervously put her hands on her belly. "You feelin' sick?" She looked at him confused. "Huh? Oh. No. I'm still feeling a bit full from dinner earlier." "Alright. Just makin sure." She came to the table and sat next to him. "Thanks." A moment later Warrick came in carrying a tray of coffee. "Hey guys. Picked up some coffee on the way here, that way Greg can't complain when we drink his." Greg walked in. "What? It's expensive." Warrick rolled his eyes. "You put it in the community coffee pot, what do you expect?" Greg grabbed a cup, sat down and put his feet up on the table. "Whatever."
Grissom walked into a happy break room wielding a handful of files. "Greg. Feet off the table." Greg dropped his feet to the floor. "Right." Grissom looked around the room. "Where's Catherine?" "Right here," came a voice from behind. Grissom grinned at her. "Glad to see you're punctual." "Oh please, Gil. Like you've never had to take a piss." Grissom raised his eyebrows in disgust. "Oookay. Assignments. Greg, Catherine, Warrick. You have a double murder out in the desert. Sara and Nick are with me tonight. We've got a hit and run on the strip." Everyone started to stand up. "And before you all leave. Remember dinner tomorrow at our place."
Greg and Warrick walked out side by side. "Wonder what's up." Warrick looked back at Sara and Grissom. "You think something is going wrong?" Greg laughed. "Well yea, when's the last time we were all invited over?" Greg waited for an answer. "After Sara came back. I guess. Maybe it's nothing." "When is it ever nothing?"
