A/N No your eyes don't deceive you! It's an update!
Look… writers block is a bitch and fight scenes are hard. I'm sorry.
I own nothing
Scarlett's POV
Scarlett sighed. "In three… two… one…" turning on her heal she grabbed Reid's fist before it could impact with the back of her head. Opening her eyes she raised an eyebrow at him. "How do you plan on sneaking up on the enemy if you can't even sneak up on me when I have my eyes closed?"
Reid snatched his fist free in annoyance and frustration; they had been training for the last week. The longer they had to train the more on edge and picky Scarlett became. It was like she was trying to cram her life's worth of training into a week. "Scarlett we've been at this for hours! Can't we just take a break already?"
"No! You guys wanted to fight but unless you can actually get to the point where I'm not going to be freaking out that you're going to get killed we train!" Scarlett snapped back at him, eyes slowly but surely turning silver.
Pogue put his hand on her shoulder, "Babe, maybe a break wouldn't be such a bad idea? And during the fight we'll be using out power as well so it isn't like we'll have to be going hand to hand the whole time." He tried to reason. To preserve their power as much as possible they had agreed not to Use during the training or before the fight in general.
Flicking her ponytail over her shoulder Scarlett sighed and glanced at the others, Caleb and Tyler were sparring, Caleb occasionally calling out tips or encouragement but it was clear they too were getting tired. "Alright," She relented, "An hour break but that's it."
Pogue kissed her forehead before the four boys headed over to where their bags were to grab a drink. They were out in the field near the remains of the burnt down barn, it was out of the way and no one would be passing by anytime soon.
"How is the training coming?" A voice from behind her made her jump, turning quickly and relaxing when she saw it was Balthazar.
"Admittedly they're a lot better than I'm giving them credit for." She told him, glancing back at the boys, Caleb watching the angel wearily.
"Then what's with the anxiety I can practically taste in the air around you?" He asked with a smirk that made her glare.
"They're good, but I don't know if they're good enough." She said simply.
"Modesty really isn't your thing is it?" He teased.
"No it's not," Scarlett could just about see the contempt the angel had for her, "It takes away from my eyes."
Balthazar continued to smirk as he locked eyes with her, staring at her as though he was looking through her, past her soul and to her heart and her darkest fears. "You're eyes tell a story you know… they tell a story about where you've been, where you're going, who you are and who you wish to be. Yours though… they change. They're always changing. It makes me wonder… who are you Scarlett Ledger?"
Scarlett held his gaze, refusing to back down. "Right now? A fighter."
"Is that so? Well then show me." The angel's voice remained teasing, almost mocking, but there was a tension in his body that showed he meant what he said. He was calling her out, to see if she could back up all her talk.
Subtly Scarlett took off her represent ring, slipping it into her pocket. With a pleasant smile on her lips as her eyes turned a milky white she put her hand on the angels stomach.
"What are you-" Balthazar's question was cut off when he was pushed backwards but a violent blast of wind that seemed to come from her palm. The angel didn't fall though, despite clearly being caught off guard. Balthazar's teasing façade faded as he drew two short swords, pure silver and sharp to the touch.
Pogue moved to get up but Caleb shook his head at him, "Wait, let them settle this."
Scarlett drew a dagger of her own and slipped into a fighting stance, readying herself for whatever retaliation he could throw at her. She didn't expect him to literally throw something at her though. With a speed that caught her off guard, the angel threw one of his short swords at her with deadly precision. Scarlett was just able to knock it aside with her own blade before Balthazar charged her.
Reacting quickly and relying on past training and instinct, Scarlett screamed, the sound causing the angel to stumble back as he tried to cover his ears in defence to the piercing sound. Taking advantage of his distraction she kicked his stomach, again using the air to push him back.
Seeming to have had enough of the wind being used against him the angel spread his wings, using them to blast her back with a wind attack of his own. Scarlett nearly fell but caught herself by raising the earth as a support. With her balance caught once more Scarlett threw the rock at her opponent, the angel in turn using his other short sword to block them.
Scarlett's hair became engulfed in black flames as she summoned the same night black fire into a ball in front of her, not allowing Balthazar a moment's reprieve as she threw it at him with a snarl.
The angel seemed to be surprised by the attack and narrowly dodged to the side (the fire ball flying past him and setting a small tree aflame behind them which Tyler hurried to put out) before he leapt to attack her once more.
Pogue's POV
As the four watched the fight between the supposed allies the biker couldn't help but worry over Scarlett's safety as the fight intensified. He knew that she could handle herself and that right now if anything she would be annoyed at him for trying to help but it didn't feel right just standing there watching.
Especially when the angel tackled her to the ground, knocking her blade away as they fought for the upper hand. He took a step closer, but again Caleb stopped him by grabbing his arm. "Pogue wait, neither of them have landed a fatal hit yet."
"Yeah but not from lack of trying!" He argued, he had learnt from the accident with Chase (or should he say Gabriel now?) that it wasn't always the best decision to ignore Caleb to try to help the girl but surely this was a good time to step in?!
"Guys we got company…" Reid interrupted, pointing to the sky where two more figures were descending; one was clearly an angel while the other looked to be Demetri.
As they approached Pogue looked back to the two were fighting.
"Yield! You would be dead were this a real battle!" Balthazar declared, he had his blade to her throat and her arms pinned, wincing in pain as the flames hit his skin.
Scarlett had a smug glint in her eye, "Think again!" she told him, and looked over his shoulder to where her discarded blade currently hovered, engulfed in black flames and ready to plunge between his wings and into his back.
"Impressive." The new angel spoke in a voice that oozed authority and immediately Balthazar released Scarlett who took the chance to roll away from him.
Getting to his feet Balthazar seethed his blade and bowed in respect, "Hello Michael."
"Hello Balthazar, at ease." The archangel told him as he turned his attention to Scarlett who was putting the ring back on. The effect was instantaneous, her hair and eyes returning to normal immediately. "This must be Scarlett. It's quite a feat to convince a warrior of heaven that your cause is more just than that of the archangels and yet you have managed to convince two. Come closer."
Pogue and the others stepped closer, the biker getting a weary feeling in the pit of his stomach as he watched the exchange. Scarlett hesitantly did as he asked and looked confused as he placed a finger on her forehead. There was a quiet gasp and a flash of light so bright that the boys had to look away before it cleared and Scarlett dropped to the ground, Pogue rushing forward to catch her. "What did you do?!" he demanded, glaring up at the archangel and trying to use his body to shield Scarlett's.
The angel smile at the act of bravery. "I was seeing whether or not her cause is just. It is. The angels will fight at her side when the time comes." He declared, nodding at Demetri and Balthazar before flying off.
Demetri closed the distance to Pogue's side, checking her over quickly. "She'll be alright. I think it would be a good time to call it a night though don't you? You all look like you could use the rest."
Pogue nodded and stood with Scarlett in his arms. As the other boys started to head back towards the car, Pogue looked back at the half breed. "Demetri I want you to promise me something. Promise me that you'll keep her safe if I can't."
Demetri nodded, "I promise."
It was a quick drive back to the dorms, Tyler driving to avoid any police attention ("Reid…"), once they got back they all headed to their dorms, physically exhausted from the training and silently on edge as they waited for the shit to hit the fan.
Pogue used to open Scarlett's door, slipping inside and placing her on the bed, quickly taking off her shoes and putting the blanket over her. He was about to leave when he heard a quiet voice.
"Stay…"
Looking back he saw Scarlett looking up at him, silver eyes tired and only half open. He smiled and nodded, closing the door and pulling off his shoes and shirt before climbing into bed with her, holding her close as she cuddled against him. He couldn't help but think that he could definitely get used to falling asleep with her in his arms…
A/N Cheesy ending is cheesy I know I know! Still let me know what you think? It's getting closer to the end now.
Also I probably won't be updating again for a while (shocker I know) so have a safe and happy Christmas (if you celebrate it) and a good new year
