Floating Before My Eyes
I have looked into your eyes with my eyes. I have put my heart near your heart.
Pope John XXIII
BELLA'S POV
Edward and I had been back in Forks for a few days, and we still hadn't told anyone about our newfound love. When I had woken in his arms during the flight home, we talked about his wish to tell them.
"Bella, love, I don't think it would be wise to keep our relationship a secret," he said, running his fingers through my hair. "The clan knows, so why can't my family."
I averted my eyes. "The clan doesn't know anything, Edward. They think the song was just that, a song, not a confession of my feelings."
He shook his head. "Trust me, Bella, the clan knows the truth."
"How do you know?" I asked.
He pursed his lips.
"The way everyone smiled at us," he answered.
It was my turn to shake my head.
"That's not solid proof."
He blew out a long breath as if he was debating telling me something.
"Edward?" I said.
He sighed. "I can read minds, Bella. It was hard with the language barrier, but I was able to learn a little of the language from you, enough to interpret their thoughts."
I felt my eyes widened as I shallowed. "Can you read my thoughts?"
"No. I don't know why."
I nodded. "To answer your original question, I would like a few days before we let anyone else in. It's not that I don't want them to know, I do…"
He lean down and kissed me, effectively silence me.
Edward hadn't liked the idea but understood.
As soon as we had entered his home, I had been bombarded with questions and had demonstrated a little of my powers. I kept the stranger of my abilities hidden as I was afraid of what they would think if they know I could see the future or tap into the thoughts of others, like Edward, which might explain why he couldn't read mine.
After I had answered their questions, I was pretty much left alone. But every so often I caught Jasper staring at me with a curious smile, but he had yet to say anything to me. His thoughts revealed nothing. Maybe he knew how to shield his thoughts because of Edward.
Carlisle and Esme insisted I continue staying with them until Jacob was found. So, I spent much of my time in the music room alone. I didn't really want to be alone, it just happened. Alice and Rose had gotten me a guitar for Christmas, and I had so many thoughts for songs flowing through my mind ever since.
My fingers stroked the strings, playing the same notes over and over. No matter how many times I strummed the melody, I couldn't figure out how to continue.
When a piano started accompanying me, I thought I was imagining things until I looked up. Edward was smiling worriedly at me.
"You sounded like you could use some help," he said. "Although, no one minds hearing the tune over and over, they quite like it what you have so far." I glared at him. "Where are you going with it?"
"I don't know. Something's missing. Another guitar, drums … I just don't know," I said, giving him a weak smile.
"Hmmm, let's see if Jasper and Emmett will help out."
"Help out with what?" Emmett and Jasper both asked, coming into the room.
"Like you guys don't know," I said, handing the sheet music to Emmett.
Jasper looked at it, too.
"I think we'll need Rose and Alice," Jasper said.
"Need us for what?" Rose said, walking in with Alice.
I groaned.
This is not what I need right now. It's bad enough I am writing a song about what happened in Scotland.
"I'll repeat what I said to Emmett. You already know."
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Edward rub his upper lip trying to hide the fact that he was smirking.
"What you've been playing is good," Alice said.
"If it was, I wouldn't be stuck" I said, sarcasm dripping off my words.
Emmett laughed.
I shot him a glare, and he fell silent.
"Even Edward here gets stuck from time to time," Jasper said. "He drives us all nuts with his foul mood." He looked over at Edward. "What? You know it is true."
My gaze moved to Edward. He was shaking his head.
"Rose, take Bella's guitar. You should be able to play without seeing the sheets," Edward instructed.
I knew what he wanted me to do without him telling me and nodded. He gave me a strange look. Closing my eyes, I listened for a few minutes as the others fiddled around with my music. The music envelope me, and that's when something clicked in my mind. I waited as the simple music started once again. I concentrated on what I was hearing in my mind and soon an electric guitar and drums came in. I opened my eyes and looked over my shoulder to where Jasper sat behind a drums and then to my left where Emmett stood. They both had a look of pure amazement on their faces. There was only one thing missing… words. Like the music, the words entered into my mind. All too soon the music stopped.
"Whoa," Emmet said wide eyed. "What was that? I felt like I knew exactly what notes to play and when."
Rose and Jasper both said they had felt the same. Edward and Alice just kept looking back and forth between the three of them. "What do you mean?" questioned Alice with a confused look.
I caught Edward's eye as I bit my lip.
"I don't know," Rose said. "It was like the notes were floating right before my eyes."
"But there was nothing there," Alice said.
Oh no. Time to explain.
"Alice, Rose is right. There were notes where floating before their eyes, well, their mind's eye. I think what I was seeing was transmitted to them."
Alice stared at me for a heartbeat or two longer.
"Well, I would like to hear it again. It was beautiful, it just needs lyrics."
After that she stood there with her hand frozen in mid-air. The others were frozen, too. The only one who seemed unaffected was Edward.
"Edward, they will know once they hear the lyrics," I said, biting my lip. "You don't think Alice will hurt us for not telling her sooner."
He got up from the piano bench and came to stand before me.
"She'll understand. Although, she might try to do something to me," he said with a laugh. "I'll handle it. Are you sure you're ready for them to know?"
I blew out a breath. "I think Jasper has his suspicions, but yes."
"We should know what," Alice asked, glaring at Edward and me. "Edward, when did you move in front of Bella?'
"Uh," he said.
He hadn't noticed the spell coming to an end.
"I do have lyrics," I said before Edward could say anything. "Now, Edward, let me work."
Jasper counted out the beats and then Emmett and Rose began playing.
I joined in shortly after and couldn't take my eyes off of Edward. I wanted to see his reaction before anyone else's.
His reaction was not at all what I expected. He gathered me up into his arms and kissed me right in front of siblings. "Bella, I love you so much."
"And I love you." We looked around and nobody was in the room. "I guess they know now."
Edward shook his head. "Bella, I should have told you before now. There is no a keeping secret in this family. They knew how we both felt about each other the moment we returned."
