Chapter 12 The Breaks

Keller

I let out another scream as I try to pull myself back into my wheelchair. I'd needed to go to the bathroom and I was all alone in the house. Galon was at work and I'd promised him I would call Rashel, who lives next door, if I needed anything. Of course my pride had gotten in the way and now I was stuck on the floor. I'd always been strong and fit but the effort of pulling myself around all day was starting to take its toll. I can't even sit up. As I start to cry yet again Rashel bursts in the door and comes straight over to me.

''I heard your scream'' I try to stop the tears, it's one thing to cry on your own but for everyone to see what a pussy I was being was downright humiliating. ''Shhh, it's okay. I'm here, I've got you''

I'm sobbing so hard Rashel can't understand me asking her to bring me to the bathroom. I end up pissing myself, that's right, I piss myself. Rashel has no clue what to do with me. How to you console a grown woman who has just pissed herself? ''Don't worry I'll clean you up''

''Don't tell Galon, please I couldn't bear it if he found out''

''He loves you''

''And I'm a burden to him, I'm a burden to you all''

''That's not true'' I don't bother arguing with her, she just doesn't realize how much I'm draining everyone around me. She still thinks that somehow she can fix this.

Mary-Lynette

''Ash get back in bed'' I mumble, snuggling deep into the duvet.

''I can't, I have things to do''

''You always have things to do''

''I know babe, I'm sorry'' Ash leans over and kisses my forehead. I try to get back to sleep but when I hear Ash leave I decide I might as well get up. Poppy and I had decided to throw Keller a welcome home party. Nothing big, just dinner with the original Daybreak at Poppy's house.

Quinn

''Can you not just go over for a few minutes?'' I plead with Rashel.

''No, I'm not going to see them all tell my sister how sorry they are and how much they wish they could help. Instead of throwing a dinner party they should be doing everything they can to get the son of a bitch who did this to her''

''They're trying. There is no guarantee killing that demon will give Keller her legs back but at least this way she is surrounded by people who care about her''

''All she's going to see is what she can't have''

''And she's going to have to get over it, the way all of us do''

''How dare you, none of them have suffered like her''

''Maybe not but they've had their hardships. Mary-Lynette has to sit there with Iliana and Will beaming over the baby and –''

''Mary-Lynette doesn't love Will anymore''

''No she doesn't, that's not what I was talking about. You're going to have to let go of some of your anger. It won't help your sister move forward''

''Fine, I'll go''

''These people are our friends, I'd keep that in mind''

''No, most of them are your friends''

''Since when?''

''They've always only been your friends!''

''Rashel you've fought with these people, you risked your life for them as they did in return. That wasn't all for me. You worked for Daybreak before you met me''

''I always knew we hadn't won the war. They all thought I was just being paranoid, that I was too afraid to move on and actually live a proper life, that I was desperately attempting to find something to cling onto. If they'd just listened and taken me a little seriously we wouldn't be in this mess''

''Not everyone is a fighter like you Rash, some people want to settle down and live a life''

''And Ash was more than happy to oblige''

''What?''

''Ash had finally gotten his soulmate back, all he wanted to do was live a life with her''

''You have no idea what you're saying. Ash has and would give up everything to save us. Mare may have dumped him but that was because he was always away fighting with us. He took the job nobody wanted and has been as good a leader as any of us could hope for. Don't begrudge him wanting what little time he can have with Mare''

''He's not the only one whose soulmate is going to die of old age''

''Yet he's the only one who might have been able to stop it''

''They've made their choices and now they have to live with them''

''They can't have a full life together. A few months ago Ash came to tell me he and Mary-Lynette had been trying for a baby but their DNA wasn't compatible. Mare had taken it badly and was blaming it on herself. He was so angry. Angry over the fact he could never give Mare a child, but he said he wouldn't take back what he'd done if it meant things would have changed''

''Maybe it would have been for the better'' I know she's stressed and taking it out on other people but I can't take her insulting Ash like that. ''I'm leaving, don't worry about coming. I'll just tell them you were too tired''

''No, I said I'd go''

The ten minute car ride is made in complete silence. We arrive late to the party and everyone is already sitting around talking. Keller looks better than she has in days. She still has a distant look in her eyes and a greyish tint to her skin but she looks interested in the conversation and occasionally whispers comments to Galon sitting beside her. Rashel has calmed herself down know she sees how much better Keller is. I feel like shaking her though, I don't know where her head is at. Ash walks over to me and Rashel walks away, I see the pained look in his face.

''Dont worry about her, she's just overwhelmed''

''It's fine, she's just honest about how she feels''

''I don't think she feels that way though, I think it's just the anger taking over''

''Have you seen Rowan?''

''No, she not here yet?''

''Nobody's seen her all day''

''Really? Has anyone gone over to her house''

''Yeah and she's not answering her phone. I haven't let anyone know yet but I think I'm going to have to break up this party and search for her. Just with the way things are I can't be too careful''

Rowan

The bag is yanked roughly from my face to reveal two men and a woman.

''She doesn't look very like him'' The woman says.

''I'm telling you that's her'' The taller of the two men snaps at her. When I look at him I can see he's quite tall, probably six foot four or five and he looks down at me. Then out of nowhere I feel as if I'm drawn into him, as if I'm being pulled into his mind but then the woman's voice snaps us out of the trance. ''Well she doesn't look like much''

''And you look like too much, now leave us so I can get some answers out of her'' Both leave, not looking too happy, and I'm left alone trapped in this room with a man who looks like he's eyeing me up for dinner.

Let me know what you thought x
