Chapter 28

"Hello." As the male voice spoke in a friendly tone; I nearly died of two heart attacks. I dropped my flashlight and went into a defensive stature quickly turning to my left using my elbow as my weapon and made connection to the voice's face. He grunted in pain as he fell backwards. I faced him, with my fists ready to give him another go when I noted something.

"Doctor?" I asked, seeing a fez resting on the ground. He wore a green pea coat, his suspenders/bracers and a red bowtie. He got off the ground grunting in pain and held his left cheek.

"Oww… that hurt… Packed a good punch though." He rubbed his check as he looked at me. I slapped his right arm.

"Don't scare me like that Doctor! Jesus! I was freaking out and then you come out of know where scaring the living daylights out of me!" my voice was a bit shaky and I glared at the Doctor. He now rubbed his right arm a looking at me with sadness. I picked up the flashlight and began to look around.

"Anyway Doctor, what are you doing here?" I asked him looking for the path Sherlock would have taken and looking behind to see if John would show up. He must have been left behind as well only because he was behind me and if I stopped he would have made me kept going.

I looked at the Doctor's face for a split second and noticed complete sorrow on it. But he quickly hid it with his usual cheeky smile.

"Ah, right, someone told me you would be here and I thought, 'hey why not tag along?' so I did. And here I am." He smiled and bent over to pick up his fez. Friend? Who would know that I'm here? I then become suspicious of his actions. Something was wrong. The Doctor stood up and placed the fez on his head. "Oh! And I have a fez. You like it?"

Before I could answer him we heard a loud howl near us. The Doctor's eyes froze looking behind me. I froze and spun around, flashlight in hand and pointed it at the path a head of us. A stray dog stood there snarling at us.

"He doesn't look very happy…" the Doctor said. I looked back at him with a glare.

"No shit." Saying it as sarcastically with a blank look. I looked back at the dog and realized it was gone. Nothing. I didn't even hear it walk away. "…Where did it go?"

I looked to the Doctor whose eyes were wide. I saw fear in his eyes as he stared out to where the dog used to be. He looked down at me and grabbed my hand. "We need to go." Without arguing I let him lead and we took off, running into the woods. I wasn't sure where were going, probably the TARDIS but where the location was, I had no idea. Hopefully not too far.

After a few long running moments, we made to the TARDIS. He opened the door and we both stepped inside and the door shut behind us. The Doctor still had a grip on my hand and dragged me up the steps to the console. I could feel the Doctor tighten his grip on my hand, I winced a bit. Realizing what he did, he let go and looked at me surprised.

"Oh, sorry Alex. I didn't mean to, I was just-"

"Doctor what's wrong?" I cut him off. I had a general idea what he was afraid of, but I wanted him to tell me.

"Nothing's wrong," he smiled, masking himself again. "I'm okay, I'm the king of okay." He placed both hands on my shoulder's leaning in for a hug. I put my hands up against his chest pushing him away. I looked at him with concern and a glare.

"No you're not. You're not the king of okay; you're the king of pretending you're okay. Now tell me what's wrong." He went silent and looked away from my gaze. After a few silent moments I spoke up. "… Are you afraid I'll disappear?" he tried to walk away from me but I grabbed his arm.

"Doctor." I said sternly. "Answer me." after a few seconds, he finally looked at me giving me a small sad smile.

"You have always been able to read me like a book…" he spoke in a soft tone, the one I knew he would tell me the truth. At least most of it. "…Yeah… I don't want you to disappear… not you… you're the last one, I don't want you to go…" he got out of my grasp and turned toward the TARDIS console, looking up. "I don't think I'll be whole if you're gone."

I smiled kindly at the Doctor walking up to his side and looked up to the ceiling. We were quiet for a little bit when I finally turned to him, smiling still.

"Doctor, I promise you that I'll never leave. I think it's a lot harder to get rid of me, I've known you for how long now? Well for me it's been about… nine years. But you've known me for… give or take…two, three hundred." He looked at me and turned his body so it faced me. "Even if someone took me away, or even if I vanished, I promise," I raised my right hand. "That I will always find my way back to you, no matter what. Scouts honor." He smiled, not just a fake smile. No. This was my Doctor's smile. His real one.

"Can I give you a hug?" I asked him.

"Do you really have to ask?" he spread his arms open, waiting for my request. I wrapped my arms around him, giving him a hug. We stood there for a few moments, then let go. I smiled at him and walked towards the exit. He looked at me as if I were going to disappear at any moment.

"Seriously, I'm not going anywhere. I just need to send John and Sherlock a text to say I left with you and are heading back to the inn." He nodded as I went out to make my text.

~~ A Skip brought to you by Me!~~

The Doctor moved his TARDIS to the inn, putting it in the back of the inn, we exited the TARDIS and headed for the building. As the Doctor and I walked to the entrance, John stormed out of the pub and stopped outside, breathing heavily. He looked up at the two of us then he looked up to the sky and took a deep breath. I noticed he looked past me at something but he relocated his gaze back at us.

"You alright?" I asked. He just looked at me with a glare, not intentionally at me but I'm pretty sure Sherlock upset him.

"Yeah. I'm great." he was clearly not.

"I'll talk to him, Doctor you go with John." I pushed the Doctor towards John, both of them looking at me with confusion. "It's better to not go alone," I smiled at them, "and I really don't want to be outside any loner, so, I'll talk to the sociopath and you two go look into whatever it is you," pointing to John, "were glancing at a few minutes ago."

I motioned my hands for them to get moving, eventually they left and I walked into the pub/inn. I didn't see Sherlock in the lounge so I moved to the bar area and saw him sitting at a table looking at his phone. I sighed, hoping he wouldn't snap at me, and sat down at his table.

"Hello Sherly~" I teased. He looked up from his phone, giving me a glare. I smiled at him as he looked back at his phone. While we sat in silence I ordered a beer and some chips. Hoping he would be the one to speak and tell me what was up with him and John, I waited in silence.

My order arrived and I gave a thank you to the barman and turned my attention back to Sherlock.

"You going to say anything?" I finally asked, being impatient.

"About?" he said still looking at his phone. I sighed.

"You and John. You clearly had some sort of fight, judging by the way he stormed out of the pub a few minutes ago." I grabbed a chip, dipping it in the pub's special sauce and I threw it in my mouth. "You wanna' tell me about it?"

"There's nothing to tell you." I sighed knowing I was walking into a wall. But Sherlock looked up at me at that moment and I saw something I never thought I would see in Sherlock. Fear. As soon as I saw that, I knew what had happened between Sherlock and John. At least the general idea of it. He couldn't understand why he was so afraid.

"Are you okay, Sherlock?" I asked worriedly as I put my hand on top of Sherlock's unoccupied one. As I did that he pulled his hand away, straightened his posture and looked at me.

"Where's John?" he asked.

"He went to check on something and I sent the Doctor with him." I watched Sherlock as he glanced around the bar. I took a few sips of my beer as Sherlock began to text someone. He then took a picture of something. I turned around to see a woman at the bar, around John's age, and looked back at Sherlock with a confused look.

"Need John to do something for me." I replied with an 'oh' and took another sip of my beer. We were quiet for a little bit, I ate my chips and drank my pint of beer.

"Why don't you travel with him?" Sherlock asked out of the blue as I was about to take another mouthful of beer. It took me a few moments to figure out what he was talking about.

"You mean with the Doctor?" he grunted and made that 'obviously' look. "I used to, while I went to school, but once I graduated… being with the Doctor you realize, he's all alone. No family to visit, no home to go back to. And that's what I want to be. A place the Doctor knows he can to return with open arms." Sherlock linked his hands together and placed them under his chin.

"Why bring that up?" I smirked. "You jealous?" he glared at me. "I'm kidding." I teased.

Sherlock stood up and placed some bills on the table. "It's on me." he said as he left the bar and probably off to his and John's room. I drank the last of my beer and stood up walking to my room.

~~~~In ze bedroom~~~~
I shut the door and pulled my black coat off draping it over a chair. The room was rather small; a queen sized bed laid in the middle of the room, the bathroom was to the left and a small dresser lay in front of the window. I opened my luggage and grabbed my PJ's which contained of an dark green tank top and black basketball shorts, grabbed my under garments and headed to the bathroom to take a shower.
After I was finished I stood in the bathroom for a little bit and looked at my reflection. My emerald eyes seemed darker and I looked tired. after a few moments I decided to go to bed and opened the door the room.
River sat on my bed. She wore a loose white gown with gold accents. She looked rather lovely.
"R-River?" I said completely shocked.
"Hello sweetie." She said and patted the place next to her for me to sit. I sat down and looked at her confused.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"Well it's good to see you too." She joked and smiled looking forward. "I came to give you a message."
I looked at her and cocked m head to the side. "From the Doctor? He's here, why doesn't he ju-"
"No, not from the Doctor. It's from the girl he loved, before me." my eyes widened and my heart stopped. She knows about Rose? River still looked ahead of her at the door to the rest of the inn.
"Here," she handed me a folded piece of paper, "it's better if you read it yourself." I slowly took the paper from her grasp and put it on my lap. Opening it, I read:
Your time is coming to an end. I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry.
I looked up to talk to River, but she was gone. I gripped the paper tightly and furrowed my brows. Why? Why now? Why have I been told? I don't want to know… No one should know. How come I get to? I laid on the bed turning on to my side and went in the fetal position. I clutched the paper to my chest as some tears weld up in my eyes.
I don't to go… I can't, not yet…
