Chapter 28
Gabby lay still in bed with her eyes focused on the ceiling. She was still angry from her conversation with Matt last night. How could he really think that this was a decision base on anything else but love? Or may be he changed his mind and decided he didn't want kids anymore? So many questions ran through her mind, but there was no way to answer them without talking to her husband.
She took a deep breath as she slowly rolled out of the bed. When she opened the bedroom, she saw him sitting on the couch with a bowl of cereal in his hands and flipping through the channels. Just the sight of him looking so relaxed and carefree pissed her off even more. She had every intention of talking to him, but this moment she changed her mind.
"Morning," Matt called out when he saw Gabby standing in the doorway.
She didn't reply to his morning greeting, she went directly into the bathroom. She slammed the door shut behind her and looked at her reflection in the mirror. She knew she was being childish, but she couldn't help it. She just needed them to be on the same page.
Once Matt heard the door, he knew Gabby was still reeling from their talk last night. He had a good idea from her lack of delightful morning banter, but his suspicions were confirmed with the loud bang and the rattle of the walls.
He sat his cereal bowl on to the side table and the wiped his face with his hand. He waited outside of the bathroom with his arms crossed over his chest. He leaned against the wall and waited for her to come out.
She washed her hands in the warm running water and took one more glance of herself in the mirror. The questions still raced through her mind as she reached for the knob and quickly turned it. As she took a step into the dimly lit hallway, her eyes made contact with Matt's.
"Let's talk," he simply stated.
Gabby tucked a piece of hair behind her ear as she leaned up against the door frame. She crossed her arms matching Matt's body language. "Fine," she replied moving her attention to the floor.
"I have been thinking about what you said and I just want us to be sure."
"Sure about what?" Gabby asked with confusion.
"Sure that we are both ready for this step. Baby," his voice began to change into one of a soothing tone, "you have been through so much this past month, and I just want you to heal first."
"There is nothing wrong with me."
"I didn't say there was, but your body has been under so much stress, that I'm worried."
Gabby could tell by the look on Matt's face that he was being honest. She reached out for his hand and gently pulled him closer to her. "I get that you are worried, but I'm fine, honestly. I have never felt better." Gabby took in another deep breath and moved her attention to the floor, "but I need to know is that the only reason?"
"What are you talking about?" Matt asked now looking confused.
She then looked back up at him and made sure that she was clear, "Is my health the only reason you don't think it's a good idea or is there more?"
By the look on her face and the in her eyes, Matt knew what was really asking. He instantly brought his hands to the sides of her face, making her look at him. "When I see my future, I only see you and me with a houseful of kids running around. I see a little girl with your smile, dark hair, and stubbornness. Yes, I want a family and I only want it with you." Matt then brought his lips to Gabby's. He wanted to show her that she was the only person he ever needed in this world.
Gabby immediately responded by wrapping her arms around Matt and pulling him into her. Their mouth's battle for control with each passing second and their hands began to roam each other's bodies. When the kiss became too much, Gabby was the first to pull back. "Damn you Matthew Casey," she breathlessly cursed with a small smile. "You always know what to say to me."
Matt chuckled, "That's what a good husband does."
"Does that mean we should try?"
"How about you make a doctor's appointment and if everything checks out then we will try."
It wasn't the answer Gabby wanted to hear, but she would take it. Her lips found Matt's again. "Alright," she agreed between kisses. She kissed him one last time before walking away.
"Where are you going?" Matt asked.
"To get breakfast," she replied as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Well I thought that we could some practicing before the doctor's appointment."
"Oh, did you?" Gabby smiled.
"Well you know what they say," Matt said as he took a step closer to his wife, "practice makes perfect."
Without saying anything Gabby turned around and ran towards their bedroom, "Come on," she yelled as he began to chase her.
