Chapter 28: The Day My World Came Crashing Down

That did it, I tore out of my seat and ran to the nearest bathroom ignoring both Alice and dad screaming after me. I didn't even have time to close the stall door before puking up everything I had ate. I clutched the sides of the toilet gasping and dry heaving. I stood up slowing wiping my mouth, I felt the world spin and only one person came to mind before I collapsed to the ground...

Bella.

"Your blood pressure is a little high, but with some rest it should go down." The doctor said.

"Should we be worried?" Edward asked holding my hand.

"Nope, unless you are in a stressful situation nothing bad should happen." She said.

"Okay." He said.

"Are we curious to see what you are having before we stop?" She asked.

I looked up at Edward, he gave me the 'it's up to you' look.

"I want it to be a surprise." I said.

"Okay. Then, I will set up an appointment with you in a few weeks." She said smiling.

"Thank you Dr. Reid." I said.

"Please, it's Sarah." She said.

Back at the house

"Edward, stop worrying. I'll know if something is wrong." I told him.

He sighed sitting down on the edge of the bed.

"I was so scared when I heard that you were in the hospital. I didn't know if you would lose the baby, or if something terrible would happen to you." He said rubbing my stomach.

"Well, the good thing is I will know if something is wrong." I said trying to reassure him.

"What is on the list that Sarah gave you?" He asked.

I reached over to the side table and got the list, I read over it before reading some of the things aloud. It was just stuff like: Bed rest as often as possible if blood pressure gets high, little to no salt diet, drinking plenty of water, make frequent doctors appointments, and if needed medication to lower blood pressure.

"Thankfully you haven't had to be put on medication yet." He said.

"Yeah, especially if they are horse pills." I giggled.

After talking a bit more about the complications of my pregnancy we decided to head downstairs to join the rest of the family.

"Hey Bella! We were just about to go enjoy the outdoors! Maybe kick your husbands ass in some football?" Emmett said winking.

I laughed, "Sounds fun."

Edward groaned as we all headed outside. It was actually a gorgeous sunny day here in Forks Washington which, as you know, didn't happen very often. Most of the yard was cleared out for the football game, but there were four of those long chairs where you can lay down in for the girls. I took a seat in between Rose and Esme.

"This is the life girls." Alice said putting her hands behind her head and closing her eyes.

"It is." Rose agreed.

"LET'S PLAY BALL!" Emmett yelled.

Edward ran over to me, ignoring the "Come on man!" from Emmett.

"You okay babe?" He asked.

"Edward, I'm fine." I said.

"Okay." He said smiling before running back to the guys.

I wasn't quite sure how they were going to play foot ball with three people, but I guess they would find some way. Before I could finish my thought, Jake, Charlie, and Sam walked into the backyard.

"Hey Bella!" Jake said waving.

"Hey Jake! Hi dad, and Sam!" I smiled.

Sam and Charlie waved before getting into their teams. Jasper, Emmett, and Sam were in one team, and they were playing against Edward, Charlie, and Jake. I had to hide my laughter because Charlie and Jake didn't always like Edward and Edward was stuck playing with them, but I guess it was better then against them.

"Be careful!" I shouted.

"So Bella, when do you want a baby shower?" Esme asked.

"You guys don't have to plan a baby shower." I said.

"WHAT?! You're telling me that you DON'T want a baby shower?!" Alice screeched making everyone stop what they were doing.

"I don't to be too much trouble!" I said.

"No no no no, I have been looking forward to planning your baby shower since you told us that you were pregnant! There is no way you are not having one! I have already started to plan! I have an ENTIRE binder full of ideas! You can't just NOT have one!" She said freaking out.

"Okay! Okay! You can throw me a baby shower!" I said putting my hands up.

"Good, because every girl deserves a baby shower. Plus, you don't have much so this is a way to get a lot of free stuff! There is also the subject of the nursery which also needs to be planned soon because the baby is going to be here in less then three months and where is it going to sleep? The couch? No no no, my niece or nephew needs a crib, the best crib money can buy and-"

"Jesus Alice! Take a freaking breather!" Rose said.

I laughed.

"How can I?! There is so much to do!" She said.

"I am the one having the baby, right?" I asked.

Esme and Rose laughed.

"Laugh all you want, but when you realize just how much preparation comes to having a baby you won't be laughing at all." She huffed.

I wasn't quite sure what to say, I just laughed and laid back to enjoy the sun.

So far, Emmett's team were winning, but it was a close tie. The boys were getting all angry and sweaty, they were getting into the game and to me it was a bit much. I mean, why would you get angry about a game where you throw a ball around? This would be the part where Emmett would go into full detail about how football isn't just a game where you throw a ball around and where I would space out.

"Bathroom break." I said hoisting myself out of the lounge chair. I was walking across the field when I heard.

"BELLA! WATCH OUT!"

Everything went in slow motion from this point on. I spun around in enough time to see Emmett running full speed towards me, he was running backwards to catch the ball and couldn't stop. The next thing I knew I was slammed into by Emmett as we both flew to the ground. I landed on my side and we slid a few feet. I must have hit my head because it began throbbing, and throughout that whole process I remember Emmett's elbow crashing into my stomach.

"BELLA!"

Everyone began to run over to us, Emmett quickly got up and started to ask if I was okay. The truth was I wasn't sure if I was okay, or if the baby was okay. I was only aware of the shooting pain in my head and the pain in my stomach which couldn't be good.

"Bella! Bella! Are you okay?!" Edward said, flying to his knees next to me.

"I'm not sure." I groaned.

"What hurts?" Carlisle asked.

"My head, and my stomach." I said.

"Her head is bleeding Carlisle." Emmett said.

Sure enough, there was blood coming from my forehead, and I immediately became dizzy at the thought of blood even if it wasn't very much.

"Do we move her?" Alice asked.

"No, Emmett go get my neck brace from upstairs." Carlisle said.

"Neck brace?! No, I'm fine." I said.

"Don't move!" Carlisle said.

I sighed, why does this happen to me?

Then I felt it, a sharp twinge in my stomach that made me scream out in pain and clutch my stomach. No one noticed the blood between my legs, it wasn't a lot but it was there.

"Bella!" Edward shouted.

"Edward! Stop yelling!" Esme scolded.

"Bella, what is it?" Carlisle asked.

"I'm not sure! My stomach hurts!" I cried out.

He placed a hand on my stomach, which was hard.

"It's a contraction, the baby might be in distress." He said.

"What?" I gasped.

"Just relax," Carlisle said taking the neck brace from Emmett who just ran from the house, "We are going to get this on you and we are headed to the hospital. Emmett go start my car for me, get the back seat comfortable for Bella."

"Got it!" Emmett said running for the garage.

"Now Bella, I'm going to place this on you okay?" He said.

"Okay." I said.

Edward held my hand the entire time Carlisle put the neck brace on. I thought it was ridiculous because my neck didn't hurt, but there was no arguing with Carlisle.

"Edward, help me get her up." Carlisle said.

"Are you sure that's safe?" Edward asked.

"I'm a doctor, remember? It may not be the best idea, but it's that or wait for an ambulance." He said.

"Right." Edward said helping Carlisle get me to my feet.

"OW!" I cried out.

"What?!" Edward gasped.

"Another pain!" I gasped clutching my stomach.

"Let's go!" Carlisle said.

We all filed into Carlisle's SUV which fit us all surprisingly. The entire ride there I had to deal with Edward freaking out, Alice telling me to breathe, and Emmett apologizing. I was about to blow, and I could tell that the stress was raising my blood pressure because my head started to throb more and the dizziness got worse.

"STOP! ALL OF YOU STOP!" I screamed.

Everyone shut up.

"Can I just have silence for one moment?! Without the 'Bella are you okay?!' or 'Breathe Bella, just breathe in and out' or the 'I'm so sorry Bella!' I just need a moment to myself!" I screamed.

The rest of the ride was pretty awkward, but quiet.

"What do you mean the babies lungs aren't developed enough?!" Edward yelled.

"I mean, the babies lungs are a little smaller then we would like them to be." Sarah said.

"And why are we only discovering this now?!" He snapped.

"Mr. Cullen, I understand your concern and you have a right to be upset but please keep your voice down." Sarah explained.

He sighed running his hands through his hair.

"Baby come here." I said.

He walked back over to me and grabbed my hand.

"Now, I would like to run some tests to make sure, but since we are past the 24 week mark I want you guys to start thinking about steroid injections." She said.

"You want to give my baby steroids?!" Edward gasped.

"Edward please calm down." I begged.

"How are you so calm?! She is telling us something could be wrong with the baby!" He was freaking out.

"Mr. Cullen, there isn't anything seriously wrong with the baby. The lungs are just smaller then I would like at six months. I believe with some steroid injections, it will help the lungs develop to where I want them to be. It's just a precaution in case we have to deliver it sooner then later." She said.

His eyes bugged out of his head, this was not going well at all.

"We may have the deliver the baby?" I asked before Edward could freak out.

"No, unless your pre-eclampsia gets worse. I just want to make sure though, if for some unforeseen reason, we do have to deliver I want your baby to have the best chances at survival." She said calmly.

I nodded, I was so calm because I had heard all of this back in Florida. The doctor went over all the complications that could happen, and underdeveloped lungs were one of them. This had been my first ultrasound since being back, so I assumed why they didn't catch it sooner. Sarah left the room leaving us to talk.

"Edward, are you okay?" I asked.

"I don't know. How are you so calm?" He asked sitting down on the bed.

"Because I was told the complications that could arise with this pregnancy in Florida and I have had time to accept that this is the cards we were dealt." I said.

"You're amazing." He said.

I blushed.

"You're pretty amazing too." I said.

"No I'm not, I'm freaking out." He said.

"It's normal, I didn't show it to anyone, but I had a hard time dealing with the news." I said.

"I wish I had your strength, and your braveness." He said.

"Stop it." I said blushing more.

"I can't. I'm here to make sure that you know how awesome you are." He said.

I was lucky, I didn't have any serious head injuries and I didn't break any bones surprisingly. The baby also seemed fine, minus the lungs not being developed. I was bleeding down... there but the doctors did some test and we should find the results out soon. I was having contractions, but the doctor and nurses were able to stop them with some medication. My blood pressure was a little high, and didn't want seem to want to go down but it hasn't sky rocketed yet.

"I grabbed some extra clothes for both of us, and some movies. I thought we could order pizza and have a movie night." Edward said.

"Edward, go home. I told you that you didn't have to stay with me." I groaned.

"No way, I am not leaving you in the hospital alone all night." He said.

"I'm not alone though." I said.

"Bella, I'm not leaving." He said.

"Fine." I sighed.

We ended up ordering a large sausage and mushroom pizza, and half had anchovies and pineapple added to it. Edward swore up and down that he wanted nothing to do with that half, until I started crying (I was faking it, but shhh) because he didn't like my pizza. After he acted like he loved the sausage, mushroom, pineapple, and anchovy pizza we put in Tangled.

"Why does she have to be trapped up in that tower?" Edward asked.

"Because her hair is magic that keeps the creepy old lady young again." I explained.

"So, why not just cut a chunk off?" He asked.

"Did you not see the beginning? If you cut her hair it turns brown and dies." I said.

"Oh. So, does she ever find out she is the princess?" He asked.

"Will you just watch the movie!" I laughed.

Edward's POV

The movie ended, pizza was ate, and now Bella was fast asleep. I was reading the many pamphlets and articles the hospital had on pre-eclampsia to brush up on my knowledge of the subject. The lights were off, but I had a small desk lamp on a metal tray that shined on the papers and books on my lap.

"No." Bella mumbled.

I glanced up, but she didn't say anything else so I went back to me reading.

"No! No please no!" She gasped starting to move around.

"Bella?" I said.

"No please, not the baby! Please don't hurt my baby!" She cried out.

I shot up from the chair and rushed over to the bed.

"Bella! Bella, you're dreaming love! Please wake up!" I said shaking her gently.

She let out a scream and started to thrash around, like she was trying to fight someone off her.

"Bella! Bella! Wake up! It's just a nightmare!" I said.

I shook her a little harder which seemed to work because she let out a gasp and opened her eyes. Her eyes darted around the room before settling on me.

"Edward?" She whispered.

"You were having a nightmare." I told her.

"I was." She said, sounding like she was glad it was a dream and not real.

"What was it about?" I asked.

"Your father, biological father, came back. He came back and threatened to kill me and that he would make sure this time to actually kill me unlike last time. He didn't care that I was pregnant, he said I shouldn't of had a baby with you anyway." She whispered.

"No! He isn't coming near you Bella. Not ever again will he hurt you in any way." I told her.

"I know, but he's out there somewhere." She said.

"Are you still worried he'll come back?" I asked.

"A little, but I know that I'm protected." She told me.

"You are, and so is the baby." I told her.

She smiled.

"Feel ready to go back to sleep?" I asked.

She nodded, I tucked her back in and kissed her lips before returning to my chair.

"So, are you coming back to work soon?" Dr. Williams asked.

"Soon, I need to make sure my wife is alright first." I told him.

"How far along is she?" He asked.

"Six months." I said smiling.

"Excited or nervous?" He asked.

"Both?" I laughed. "I'm not sure what to feel."

"Well, I hope for nothing but the best for your family." He said grabbing his chart.

"Thank you." I said as he walked away.

I smiled as I watched a mother being pushed out of the hospital in a wheel chair holding her new born baby.

"SHE'S BLEEDING AGAIN! SOMEONE PAGE DR. CULLEN" Someone screamed.

I whipped around and saw nurses rushing into Bella's room, my heart stopped as I took off running.

"Dad!" I gasped as I ran into the room.

Carlisle looked up, "Edward wait outside."

"No! Dad what's wrong with her?!" I gasped.

"Edward! Now." He warned.

A nurse led me out of the room and closed the doors. I watched as Bella cried out in pain, I looked at the bed, the blanket was covered in blood where her legs were.

"Edward! What happened?!" Alice shrieked.

"I don't know! One minute she is fast asleep and the next she's bleeding!" I said running my fingers through my hair.

"She'll be fine, dad will fix her." She said grabbing my hand and squeezing it.

I gave her a small smile even though I was scared to death. Bella had told me to wait until she has another scare with her pre-eclampsia. I just hoped we wouldn't see another one, and not a bad one like this.

"One of the pamphlets... One of them said that once someone gets pre-eclampsia that it will likely come back for every pregnancy." I said my voice starting to shake.

Alice just looked at me not knowing what to say.

"How can I do this to her? She wants more kids after this one. But how can I do that knowing this is what we have to go through to get one? It's not fair! She has to risk her life to have a baby!" I said trying to stop the tears.

Alice pulled me away from the door and into an empty exam room. She closed the door, shut the lights off, and put a privacy screen in front of the door. I stood in the middle of the room trying not to lose it. That didn't work for too long because once Alice hugged me I just started sobbing.

"It's going to be okay." She said.

"You don't know that! The pamphlets said NOTHING about severe bleeding!" I cried.

"I do. This is Bella we are talking about. Even when she's unconscious she is stubborn. She won't give up and you need to not give up on her either. I know you have been bottling all this inside Edward, everyone else may be blind but I am not. I was just waiting for you to be ready to let it out." She told me.

"I'm scared Alice. I'm really scared." I said pulling away from the hug.

"We all are Edward. The wonderful thing about this family is that you don't have to go through this alone. Adopted or not you are apart of this family. Cullen's stick together." She said smiling.

"Thank you." I said.

There was a knock on the door, Carlisle walked in. I turned around wiping my eyes.

"Dad." I said.

He had a grim look on his face.

"No..." I said.

Alice rushed over to me and held my hand.

"She's alive." He said making it clear she wasn't dead.

"The baby? Wh- What about the baby?" I asked.

"I need you to follow me into my office." He said.

"No, I want to know what's going on!" I screamed.

"Edward, my office. Now." He said.

I looked at Alice.

"Can Alice be there?" I asked.

"If that's what you want." He said.

Once we were in the office we sat down in the chairs in front of his desk. He took a deep breath running his hand through his hair before sitting down. He set a chart, which I was assuming was Bella's, down on the desk. It looked like he was trying to figure out where to start.

"Dad, I'm going nuts over here." I said.

"Bella's condition just got worse." He said.

Alice grabbed my hand, "How worse?"

"Bella has placental abruption." He said.

"Wh-What's that?" I asked.

"It happens when there is bleeding behind the placenta, between the placenta and the wall of the uterus. It some cases it can be just a small amount of bleeding, but as you saw Bella lost a lot of blood. At first we didn't know what was happening. We thought the worst, we thought she was having a miscarriage." He said.

"How do you know that this is what she has?" I asked, feeling completely lost.

"Two of the causes are pre-eclampsia and a sudden blow to the abdomen such as a car accident or..."

"Someone elbowing her in the stomach." I sighed.

He nodded.

I put my head in my hands.

"What happens now?" I asked feeling another break down coming.

"We watch both Bella and the baby very carefully. She has to stay at the hospital for a few days if not a week. If she is fine and the baby is fine she can be released but still will have to be watched. Edward, there is more." He said.

I just stared at him, what more could there be?

"If things get worse, we may have to deliver the baby." He said.

My eyes opened wide, "She's only 26 weeks! It's too early!"

"That's why I'm hoping that everything will work out." Carlisle said.

I felt sick to my stomach.

"The risks... What are the risks to the baby.." Alice asked.

Dad hesitated, he tried to hide it but I could see it.

"Premature birth, growth problems, and.."

"And?" Alice said.

"Stillbirth or dying in the first 28 days of being born." He said.

Bella.

Please don't hate me! Also, if I got any information wrong about placental abruption I am sorry. It took a while to write this chapter, not because I didn't know what to write but just because I was researching what this was. So I hope I got the facts right and it all makes sense, if not eh, it's fiction for a reason! I =P Review!
