Chapter 28

Brenna pulled up on the reins of Hiril and watched Raina slow her horse beside her. Alanna and Beatrice were guided to a stop by Ohtar, who had taken it as a personal responsibility to look after the young women accompanying Brenna's group. They had reached Ithilien with no problems. Brenna and Oriel made sure the girls were with them, but also that they became familiar and comfortable with the males in their company.

Aragorn and his men took visual surveys of the realm as they went. He spoke with the mayors and village officials when he was passing through. He and his men made certain that Brenna and the young women traveling with the group were well protected and that they were alright with the pace that was set. Aragorn had observed the girls that Brenna had taken under her wing. Young Raina would now be considered an adult, but she and the younger two girls were under Brenna's protection. Though judging by Ohtar's reaction, Brenna wasn't the only one who would be protecting them.

The company dismounted and was greeted by Faramir and Eowyn who were waiting on the steps of manor in which they lived. It was a beautiful construction, well behind the fortified walls of the settlement that they had established. It had grown and expanded since Brenna had last seen it. She helped make sure the girls had safely gotten off their horses. Raina tried to help her and Oriel with the younger girls. The pace in which they traveled was more than any of the girls was used to, but despite this they were happy and didn't complain at all.

Over the days of travel had seen the girls relax with the passing miles. The outdoors and change in scenery seemed to do them good. Alanna and Beatrice seemed to have bounced back remarkably from the trauma of essentially being sold by their father's. Each of them could often be seen talking with the members of their company and asking questions about their surroundings.

The change for Raina was bittersweet. While the new surroundings and escape from the reminder of her father's betrayal were refreshing, she was still a bit unsettled by the whole ordeal. She appreciated what Brenna and the others had done not only for her but the other girls. Drawing a deep calming breath, she grabbed her pack from Ash and patted the horse. Her body stiffened when she felt someone come up alongside her and she paused in her motions.

Ohtar had cautiously approached the red haired maiden. Alanna and Beatrice were chatted happily with Oriel who stood nearby. He saw Raina's body stiffen as he stood next to her. Sighing, he knew that he would have to let her adjust and give her more time. As far as he was concerned he was in no rush.

"Would you like assistance carrying your things milady?" Ohtar asked politely.

Raina turned and carefully observed the rugged Ranger standing a respectful distance away. She nodded cautiously, "Help would be appreciated milord."

"Ohtar, milady. I'm merely a Ranger of the North, not a noble lord such as the King." He told her quietly.

"Raina," she whispered. "My name is Raina," she told him in a slightly stronger voice.

He nodded in acknowledgement and smiled kindly at her. Holding his hand out for one of her packs, he waited for her to make the first move closer. He watched as she drew up her courage and handed him one of the packs. Again he smiled at her, causing around his eyes to crinkle slightly and change his appearance from the serious Ranger, to a much younger and ruggedly handsome man. On the inside he was thrilled and extremely proud of her.

Brenna watched the interaction with a soft smile. She felt Elladan come to stand beside her before she turned to face him. Following his line of sight she could see that he was observing Raina with Ohtar. She shouldered her packs, which he went to take for her. She smiled but tolled her eyes a bit at him.

"Not that I don't appreciate it, I am capable of carrying them you know?" she said with her voice tinged with amusement and affection.

"I know that. I just like to help and feel useful," he answered honestly. "Besides, the males here in Arda have been raised in such a way that they are expected to comport themselves in a chivalrous manner."

Brenna turned to face him, afraid that she had offended him. Putting a hand on his arm, "Elladan, I'm not upset that you want to help me. I hope that I didn't offend you or make you think that way. I like that you make me feel protected, cared for, and feminine when I'm around you," she told him as a slight blush formed on her cheeks.

He grinned down at her. "I'm not offended," he said with a wink. "I'm glad that you feel that way."

Elrohir chuckled under his breath as he walked by carrying the additional packs of Alanna and Beatrice who were now chatting animatedly to Oriel. She was herding the girls up the steps of the manor and towards Eowyn to receive directions to where they would be staying.

Raina and Ohtar had stepped up to Brenna and Elladan and the group made their way up the steps. Elladan had a hand on the small of Brenna's back as he protectively led her up the steps. Raina blushed seeing the intimate action, but silently wished to have that someday.

Eowyn and Faramir greeted them and led them into the manor. Eowyn had instantly taken a shine to the younger woman and warmly welcomed her to their home. Brenna nodded in thanks to her friend and watched as Raina was led away by the Lady of the house. Faramir looked at her in question and listened as she quietly explained to him the story of the girls now in her company. He looked livid and sick at that the thought that anyone could treat their own child in such a way. He promised to speak to Eowyn privately about it later.

Brenna went to the rooms that she had stayed in on her last visit. She found that Raina and the girls chose to share a room next to her with Oriel across the hall from them. Brenna thanked the maid that had a bath prepared for her and stripped of her dirty travel clothes. The girl took the soiled clothing to be laundered and took her leave of the room.

Sighing she sank into the warm water and washed away the dirt from their travel. Brenna relaxed into the tub and just soaked for a while. She added scented oils to the water, and gently washed her long hair. While rinsing her raven locks, she contemplated having her hair trimmed as it was now reaching past the small of her back. Dunking under the warm water, she sighed and let the tension ease out of her shoulders. She stood and dried off with a towel that was provided before donning a robe. She walked into her room and found that the maid had returned and laid out a dress for the evening meal.

Brenna allowed the girl to help her dress in a light purple gown and pull her hair back slightly from her face. She smiled at the young woman and thanked her. Standing, she went to her packs and pulled out the pouch that she had hidden within her things. She pulled out her necklaces and put them on. Once ready, she left her room to collect Raina and the younger girls. She greeted Oriel in the hallway and the two of them knocked on the door.

Raina shyly answered dressed and a simple green dress. She allowed them in and turned to call the younger girls. Alanna stood by her cousin with an excited smile as she showed them her new blue dress. Beatrice, not to be outdone, giggled as she showed them her own yellow dress with a little twirl.

Brenna laughed at the girls and ushered them out of the room and down the hall. She looped her arm through Raina's and talked to the girl as they made their way down the hall. Raina grinned at her friend. There were only five, perhaps six years between them in age, so Raina relaxed in her presence. Brenna grinned at Raina and squeezed her arm gently in support as the entered the dining hall.

Eowyn greeted them carrying a giggling Elboron. Brenna laughed and held her hands out to the little prince. He all but launched himself in her arms with an excited squeal. She caught him and raised him high in the air. His toothy smile had her laughing merrily and twirling him lightly. Eowyn watched with a tender smile as she observed her happy child.

Brenna set him down, and held his hands with her fingers as she let him toddle forward, leading her into the room. She knew that it wasn't completely prim and proper behavior, but she was surrounded by her friends and family. Her sole focus was on the little boy holding firmly onto her fingers. Glancing around, she caught Elladan's eye and shared a smile with him.

Aragorn crouched down to greet the little one as they approached. Elboron gave happy gurgle when he saw his father standing nearby. Brenna laughed and let him walk the rest of the way to the waiting arms of his father. She stood and straightened her dress a bit, smiling at her friends. Eowyn hugged her friend and went to stand with her husband and son.

The group sat and enjoyed a filling and delicious meal. They talked quietly about the happenings of the realm and its people. Faramir told her that a message had been sent to Legolas and the other members of her Guard to tell them of her arrival. She nodded in thanks and asked him how the people were fairing. He told her that their crops and harvest were extremely profitable and abundant the previous year. The conversation turned to other topics as the meal concluded.

The group went for a stroll through the gardens and spoke of their plans for the next few days. Brenna's group would need to visit with her Elvish Guard members for a time before she carried on to the Shire. She told them that she hoped to get there and back before the end of the summer. That would give them plenty of time to get there and back, as well as take any detours necessary.

Brenna strolled quietly with her arm looped through Elladan's as they made their way through the blooming gardens. With his free hand, he held her right hand and spun her betrothal ring. She leaned into his side a bit and breathed deeply the light floral scent that was beginning to permeate the air. The sun was just beginning to set in the sky and a chill began to settle in the air. She shivered slightly and he led her back towards the hall where the others were beginning to gather.

With a smile he bowed over her hand and kissed the back of it. He bid her good night and took his leave, leaving her with Raina and the girls to make their way back to their own rooms. He glanced over his shoulder and smiled at her as she ushered the younger girls to their rooms. Brenna helped settle Alanna and Beatrice in for the night and sat talking quietly with Raina.

"How are you doing Raina?" Brenna asked quietly. "You seem to be dealing with things much better."

"I am Brenna," Raina told her. "Thank you for helping us. I'm not sure what would have happened to us had you not intervened. I'm hurt by what my father did, but I'm in a much better place. It will take me some time before I can trust completely again, but I'm making progress and trying."

Brenna took her hand and smiled at the younger girl. "You've done well. You and the girls have adjusted well to the change in scenery as well."

"I know this will sound silly," Raina said softly, "but I feel free now. I love my family, but now I feel as though I have a chance in life. We were not very wealthy, when my brother died in the war our family fell into further hardship. My mother fell ill and passed away about a year ago. I always knew that I would be married off by my father to help with the family's interests. I never thought that I would be sold to pay his debts though."

"Well, you'll be looked after now. No one will force you to do anything that you do not want to. If you wish to learn a craft or skill I will do what I can to help you and the girls," Brenna told her.

The two sat talking quietly for a while longer. Brenna told her more about the members of her Guard and herself. She explained her own history to Raina and shared her story. Raina listened to her in shock, hearing the full story of Brenna. She listened in interest about her Guard and the fact that Brenna knew who their spouses would be. Raina had a slight suspicion regarding this, but Brenna assured her that even if she was meant to be with someone, she wouldn't be forced. Raina asked her directly and specifically whether she would be or was supposed to be the spouse of someone in her Guard.

Brenna nodded a bit reluctantly, "I won't lie to you. I've Seen that you will be the spouse of one of my Guard members," she answered. "He is good and noble man Raina. He knows of you and will not approach the subject of anything regarding that until you're ready."

"Who is he?" Raina asked somewhat nervously.

"I'm not sure that I should say," Brenna said. "I think that perhaps you ought to just let things happen."

"Please Brenna?" Raina implored.

Sighing Brenna stood and paced the room before turning back to face the younger woman. "You must have an open mind. Promise me that you will give him a chance to get to know you when you're ready." Brenna told her, waiting for her to agree before continuing. "Ohtar comes from a long line of men that have fought to protect the innocents and Free People of Arda. He was especially concerned for you and the girls when he learned of what had happened. He will not broach the subject unless he knows that you're ready. For now, he will just watch over you and get to know you if you'll allow him."

Raina nodded slowly. "Can you tell me more about him?" she asked nervously.

They talked for a while longer before Brenna left to her own room for the night. She shut her door and leaned on it, praying that Raina would give Ohtar a chance. Drawing a deep breath, she changed out of her gown and pulled on a night shirt. She took down her hair and brushed it out before climbing into bed.

The twittering of birds woke Brenna just as the sun was climbing up over the horizon. Stretching languidly, she pulled the blankets tighter around herself and snuggled down into the bed. With a small yawn, she got out of the bed and splashed water on her face from the basin on a table. Stretching out her back a bit, she turned toward the wardrobe where her things had been stored. Opening the door, she found that there were a number of additional dresses that Eowyn had provided for her. She shook her head and smiled at the thoughtfulness of her friend.

After some debate, she selected a mahogany colored riding habit. The rich tone of the dress accented her delicate complexion. Once she had most of the under layers on, she realized her slight dilemma. While she could get the outer layer of the riding habit on, she would not be able to lace it shut. She shrugged on the clothing and stood. Tip-toeing across the hall she knocked on Oriel's door. Her friend beckoned her in and laughed slightly at Brenna's slightly sheepish expression as she held her outer dress on. Oriel laced the back of the garment for her and braided her hair for her.

Brenna returned to her room and put on her boots and gathered her weapons and cloak. She went to Raina's room to see how she and the other girls were doing. Brenna found Raina helping the other girls get dressed and braid their hair. Brenna stepped forward to help them. All of them had on riding habits and their cloaks. Brenna helped them to put on their swords, daggers, and bows. She nodded to them with a smile and led them out of the room towards the main hall.

Brenna and the girls were brought into the main dining hall for breakfast. They were joined by Brenna's travel companions. She watched as Raina kept giving Ohtar subtle glances throughout the meal. She stifled a giggle when Raina looked away with a blush as he caught her eye one of the times. Elladan looked at her in question but she shook her head at him with a smile.

The group completed their meal and made their way out to the courtyard. Hiril and Ash were saddled and waiting as was the gentle mare that had been procured for Alanna and Beatrice to ride. Brenna approached her equine friends with a smile and offered each of them an apple. Both horses snorted and chomped happily causing the younger girls to giggle.

Elladan stepped up next to her with an amused look on his face. "Are you ready to leave love?" he asked with a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Brenna nodded with a grin and allowed him to boost her up in the saddle. It would only be a short ride to the elvish settlement nearby. Brenna was thrilled to reunite with the other members of her Elvish Guard. She grinned down at him from her perch in her saddle and smiled brightly. He kissed the back of her hand with his eyes dancing.

Brenna watched as a blushing Raina was boosted into her saddle by Ohtar. She grinned at her young friend and smiled as the younger two girls giggled as they were helped onto their horse. The rest of the group mounted and they set off towards the elvish settlement. It was only a half hour later that they reached the outskirts of the area where the elves had settled.

Legolas, Gimli, and the other members of her Guard were waiting with a larger group assembling behind them to greet Brenna. She dismounted and was immediately swept into a hug by her friend. Legolas picked her up and spun her around.

"Gwathel! You're looking well, how have you been?" Legolas asked as he put her down.

"I'm well, it has been an interesting time since we parted my friends," she said while subtly glancing towards the young women traveling with her.

Legolas nodded, "Come let us show you around little one. Welcome!"

Everyone else dismounted and their horses were taken to be cared for. They were led through the settlement by Legolas and the other members of Brenna's Guard. The group was greeted warmly and welcomed. Brenna's Guard led her to a large central hall to sit and discuss the happenings of the months that had passed since they last seen each other. Oriel discreetly led the younger women away, touring with some of the elleths that she knew, nodding to Brenna on her way out.

Brenna sat heavily in one of the chairs and filled them in on everything that had happened. They were shocked and appalled to hear what had happened to Brenna's young charges and seemed both concerned and happy that Ohtar was the future husband of young Raina. They were pleased that the man had found his match, but sad that one so young had been through so much. It was unconceivable to them that someone would every treat their children in such a way.

She spent a while explaining to them her intent to visit the Shire. All of them immediately said that they'd be accompanying her, regardless of the innocent purpose of the trip. They were not taking any chances where she was concerned. Legolas called for some of the other elves from his homeland. He asked a few of them to lead their people in his stead while he traveled with Brenna. They agreed and nodded to Lady Brenna, understanding that whatever she was doing must be important if it required the presence of her full Guard.

Looking around the room she watched as Ohtar and Erchirion spoke quietly with Faramir. Aragorn approached them with two of his men. Turning, she could see that the elves in the room were making their own plans and arrangements for the trip. She smiled at Elladan who had come to her side and sat in the chair next to her.

"Are you well melamin?" Elladan asked. "You seem tired."

She gripped his hand in her own. "I'm fine. There's just so much to be done and so very little time. Already four years since the war have passed. When the issue with the threat to the north is concluded we'll have maybe one year before we need to prepare to face the brewing problems to the south and east. The conclusion of that will take another year or two. In between that time I will be traveling between the realms healing and helping to bring the heirs into the realms. I will have some time between, but I feel as though I will constantly be on the move," she told him wearily.

The members of her Guard had overheard her and were clearly concerned for their young charge. There was a silent message passed throughout the group, they would be making the necessary plans and arrangements to make sure that their young friend was not alone. Elladan brought her finger tips to his lips and he kissed them softly.

"Well, now that we've got a rough idea of when we will need to travel we can make the plans to meet and make sure you reach your destinations safely," he told her with a slight smile. "Will we be staying in any particular place for extended periods of time that you haven't mentioned?"

Brenna dropped her gaze and blushed. She nodded and met his eyes, "Yes, we will stay in Imladris for months at a time when we can."

A slow smile crossed his face and he nodded, "It would be nice to go home for a while. Would you mind going for a walk so we might talk in private for a few moments?"

She moved to stand, and he held her hand, intertwining their fingers when she was on her feet. The other member of her Guard watched them walk out through the entrance towards the gardens outside. Elrohir had a wistful smile on his face as he thought of staying in his home from time to time in the coming years. It was a sentiment that was shared with the rest of the elves from Rivendell present.

Elladan led her out around one of the gardens nearby and sat on one of the benches still holding her hand. He smiled affectionately at her, "So we are to live in Imladris?"

He watched in amusement at she blushed. "Yes," she began a bit shyly. "I would like to spend time there when we can and have that be sort of a retreat for us from the rest of the world when we can."

"As I said, it will be wonderful to go home," he told her with his eyes sparkling happily.

"There's something that I wanted to talk to you about," she began a bit nervously. "It's about our wedding and bonding ceremony."

He cleared his throat and felt a bit warm. "What about it love?"

"Would you be opposed to having the ceremony in Imladris?" she asked.

He released his breath in a whoosh. "Of course not melamin! I'm honored and thrilled that you want to have our marriage start in a place that holds such a dear place in my heart."

Brenna smiled shyly at him. "What are wedding ceremonies like here in Arda? And what sort of ceremony would we have?" she asked him softly.

"It depends on the culture and people," he answered. "Why what are weddings likes from your home?"

"They are not so different from the ones here that I've seen. There's the ceremonial union of the couple and the vows, as well as the feast or celebration. Then there's obviously the private union between the couple," she said softly.

"If there are differences or specific customs that you would like to have acknowledged, please let me know and I will try to make sure that they're included and honored." Elladan told her quietly.

Brenna nodded to him with a smile. "I know we have some time before we really need to plan things, but I thought it would be good to talk over some of this."

"You know that you can talk to me about anything right?" he asked her.

"Of course I know that!" she exclaimed. "Elladan, in the short time that I've been in Arda I've come to rely on you and your support."

They were found by Oriel and Raina murmuring quietly to one another in the garden a short while later. Alanna and Beatrice followed behind them whispering excitedly to each other as they looked around. Brenna and Elladan greeted them all with smiles and joined them as they entered the central hall.

When they entered they saw that a lunch had been prepared and they were all beginning to eat and talk quietly. Plans had been made to set out the following morning to begin the journey to the Shire. Brenna and her group returned to the home of Faramir and Eowyn to begin packing and getting ready for their journey. Brenna and the girls went to their rooms and with the help of some maids had their things packed and prepared to leave early morning.

The next morning everyone woke relatively early and prepared to leave. They were met by the members of Brenna's Guard and twenty-five Rangers from Ithilien. Aragorn left instructions for Faramir to head to Minas Tirith within the next few days to help Arwen handle the realm in his absence. Faramir and Eowyn made the necessary arrangements and plans to head to Minas Tirith as soon as possible.

Brenna rode side-by-side with Raina and Oriel. On the other side of Raina rode the younger girls. Brenna's Guard were riding protectively around her. Aragorn and his company of knights and Rangers were formed up around them as well. They were traveling at a moderate pace, stopping every so often to rest and water the horses. They crossed the Anduin and headed northwest on the Great West Road for a time, before they turned north to follow the Anduin. After some debate they decided to avoid Dunland after the problems with them in the war. There was a tentative truce and Aragorn was not willing to risk their group by that path.

A few days later they were greeted by a company of Rohirrim waiting on their border. Eomer had sent a party of Riders to escort them through to their northern most borders safely. He made arrangements for twenty of his Riders to accompany the group. Among them were Haleth and Fram, who had volunteered to lead the group and make sure that Brenna was kept safe. It was a happy reunion for Brenna as she had greatly missed her Rohirric friends.

She listened as they each happily described their wives. Hulda and Olga were their names and they sounded very much like women that Brenna would love to get to know. They told her about the others, and their wives and families. She rode alongside the two of them for quite some time catching up on the happenings of Rohan. Over time she eventually called over and introduced Raina, Alanna, and Beatrice to the group. They greeted the girls warmly and talked to them about their homeland.

Later that night by the fire Brenna told them what had happened to the young women. She saw the hands of the men before her go to their swords and their knuckles turn white. She urged them quietly to be cautious around the young girls and cautioned them of Ohtar who had become very protective of them. They received the message loud and clear; behave and be respectful the girls and understand that Ohtar had a special interest in them, particularly Raina. None of them needed a reminder on etiquette for they were all honorable and noble gentlemen. They may be a bit rough around the edges at times, but they were always respectful and courteous of Brenna and any other ladies present.

About a week later Haldir and his brother's led them to Caras Galadhon to seek refuge for a couple of days to rest. The girls were in awe of the mighty wood. The return was both joyful and sad for the elves. To see their home all but deserted caused an ache and a great sadness within them. Brenna and Oriel brought the girls up to the Main Talan. The rest of the company set up camp on the ground, as they were more comfortable there.

Brenna sighed when she lay down in her bed that night after she took a bath. They had eaten quietly around a large campfire in the company of everyone and retired to their own sleeping areas afterwards. Brenna made sure that the girls were set for the night before she made her way to her own rooms. She was exhausted by the time she exited the bath. It had been a long journey and it would still be another couple of weeks before they would make it to the Rivendell and then another two weeks after that to the Shire.

The company took respite beneath the mighty bows of the mellyrn trees for a couple of days before continuing on. Their horses and bodies needed rest from the rigorous pace in which Brenna was urging them to travel. There was an urgency to her journey that had her friends and Guard concerned. Even though they knew that this journey was about reaching the Shire they were still uneasy about venturing so close to the rising darkness and evil in the Old North Kingdom.

Brenna walked beneath the trees of the mellyrn in a simple elvish dress and long cloak. She ran her hands lovingly over the trunks of the trees and hummed to herself. Raina and the younger girls were spending time with Oriel for the day, exploring and being told about the once mighty elvish dwelling here. Brenna's Elvish Guard quietly shadowed Brenna at a respectful distance. Though they were within the protective borders of the realm, they were reluctant to let her venture too far without protection.

The sun crossed the sky as she walked quietly lost in her thoughts. She paused from time to time, healing what was left of the damage within the woodland realm. Sighing, she looked around herself, slightly confused as to where she was. Haldir and his brothers approached her with smiles.

"A bit lost little one?" Haldir asked in amusement.

"I let my mind wander and lead me where it would," she admitted somewhat sheepishly.

"All is well Brenna, there is no harm done," Haldir assured her. "Though next time try to pay more attention to your surroundings. While we were nearby the entire time, it wouldn't do for you to needlessly put yourself in danger."

"I understand," she said with a soft smile. "I could feel the echoes of the past on the way here. I can feel the power and presence of those before us in these woods."

Haldir and the others looked at her curiously. "What do you mean Brenna?" he asked.

"Here, let me show you," she said taking his hand and putting it on the trunk of one of the trees. "Close your eyes and feel the tree. Feel its spirit and let it show you."

He and the others followed her instructions. They let out startled gasps the trees thrummed and showed them glimpses and images imprinted on them from the past. Elder elves and those who had first settled Arda were shown walking the wood and waking the trees. Blurred images and feelings swirled through them until they moved their hands away from the bark of the tree trunks.

Brenna smiled at them and laughed slightly at the astonished looks on their faces. "See what I mean? It's slightly distracting."

Elladan observed at her with a charmed look on his face and smiled at her. She was a marvel to him. It humbled him that she paid such close attention to the little things in life. More often than not he and his kind took for granted the simple things in life. He often forgot the small joys and wonders of the world that she couldn't seem to get enough of. Being with her reminded him of these things and helped him to see things in a new light. He was beginning to see the world through her eyes, as were all of the others that knew her.

Brenna followed them back towards Caras Galadhon. She hummed quietly as she let Elladan and the others lead her along the set path. She could feel and hear the forest thrumming around her. Elladan's large warm hand was on the small of her back leading her along the path. They were all soothed by the sound of her voice and with her aid could now feel the forest. For Legolas and the other Woodland elves this was a deeper connection and feeling than they had experienced before.

The group reached the heart of Lothlorien rather quickly and Brenna greeted the others that were preparing the evening meal. She smiled to her friends softly and helped make the preparations for their eminent departure. Clothing was folded and packed away, food and other provisions were gathered and distributed, and their water bladders were filled. The group stayed up talking for a while, making their decision on their path. The group agreed to follow the Anduin further north to Great East Road and through a pass over the Misty Mountains.

Brenna, Oriel, Raina and the two younger girls traveled protectively surrounded Brenna's Guard once more. The group kept their pace swift as they made their way north. From time to time Brenna would stop to heal the land, but for the most part she stayed in the saddle and sang softly to Hiril. On the morning of their departure Brenna went to each of the horses and whispered to them. Ash and Hiril butted their noses into her shoulders. The others observed her but said nothing. For the Rohirrim and the members of her Guard that had been there with her during the war, it was eerily reminiscent of her blessings on the horses before the charge and rescue of Gondor by the Rohirrim. The action caused many to go on guard and more insistent that Brenna and the other women stay in the protective center of their traveling company.

They journey was a swift pace. Though they were in a time of relative peace, none were willing to risk complacency. Alanna and Beatrice didn't seem to fully understand the tension and possible danger that they could be facing, but Raina understood it and kept her hand close to the sword at her side. Ohtar rode nearby and spoke quietly with her as they rode. Brenna smiled seeing the two interact.

The company would ride for hours at time before taking small breaks to rest and water their horses. When the sun began to dip in the sky Legolas, Telgalad and Faelchon would scout ahead and find the most secure locations to camp. They volunteered to do so as the company traveled closer to their homeland. Their trek north to the Great East Road took another week and a half. The weather had turned rough for a few days and the group had decided to seek shelter rather than to risk injury.

The group carefully led their horses through the mountain pass and pushed on as best they could. The males were mindful that they had females in their company and that most of them were not accustomed to such rigorous travel. Brenna was the exception to this however having traveled with the Fellowship and ridden to war. Oriel was also becoming part of that exception as she had remained at Brenna's side for years now.

Once they had made it through the Misty Mountain pass they set out on the Great East Road heading west. Their intended destination was Rivendell. If they were swift they could make it to The Last Homely House in a short two days. It was the Sons of Elrond and Aragorn that led the company to safe locations to camp for the next two nights. Brenna made sure that Raina and the younger girls were doing alright before she went to sit next to Elladan their first night camping to the west of the Misty Mountains.

"What has you so quiet Elladan?" Brenna asked him softly.

He looked contemplative for a moment before answering. "It will be difficult to return home without the rest of my family there. I fear that it will no longer feel like home," he told her.

Brenna could see the sorrow in his eyes, but didn't know what to say to give him comfort. The long years of his life seemed to weigh on him as they sat companionably on a rock. They were surrounded by dense woods. The myriad of colors around them reminded Brenna of autumn at home. She felt a pang of homesickness that she tried to squash. Elladan looked at her in concern when he briefly felt her grief. He watched a flash of sadness cross her face before she seemed to stamp down on it. Turning he took one of her small hands in his own. Holding the petite hand in his own, he grinned when he felt callouses from where she gripped her various weapons and the reigns of her horses.

Brenna looked at him in question when she felt him tracing her hands with his own. She shivered slightly feeling the gentle and innocent touch of his larger hands. Looking up at him with large eyes she felt her pulse thunder in her ears. He looked down at her and swallowed visibly and cleared his throat. Standing he offered his hand to help her stand as well and they made their way back towards the main group. Elladan led her to her bedroll and went to scout out the surrounding area before taking watch.

Brenna closed her eyes and sung softly as the day faded into night. Looking up at the stars she sang of Valinor and found peace in the words and tune. The songs lulled Alanna and Beatrice to sleep. Raina seemed to be falling asleep herself and gave in to the fight. Brenna looked around and found that many in the camp were tucking in for the night. She herself closed her eyes, but instead of sleep she sought the Counsel of the Valar.

As everything around faded and drifted away, she heard the concerned and startled gasp of one of the nearby members of her Elvish Guard. Her consciousness drifted and she soon found herself lounging under the light of the Two Trees. Her head was on the lap of Elbereth as she lay under the light. Brenna listened contently as Elbereth sang ancient and beautiful songs of the creation. She spent a peaceful night under the watchful eyes of the Valar before they sent her into a deep and restful sleep.

Brenna awoke to Raina frantically shaking her and sobbing. Her eyes cracked open as she looked at the distraught young woman. Alanna and Beatrice were sitting nearby by crying. Their distress had awoken the rest of the camp and raised the alarm. Brenna's Guard tried to calm down and console the girls as best they could. Oriel knelt nearby trying to explain that Brenna was fine.

Brenna sat up and startled the crying girls. The three younger girls launched themselves at her. She held them in confusion, and tried to get them to calm down enough to talk. After a few moments Brenna was able to discern that Raina had tried to wake her and found her unresponsive. Brenna explained to the girls what had happened and where she had gone. The three younger girls listened with wide eyes. Raina dipped her head in embarrassment, but Brenna just hugged her and smiled.

"All is well my friend," she assured the girls. "No need to be embarrassed, I should have warned you about this long before now."

"Did you really see the Valar?" Alanna asked shyly.

Brenna smiled and nodded her head. Oriel helped the younger two girls back to their bedrolls to help them pack. Raina was now sitting next to Brenna, though she had calmed a bit she was still visibly shaken. Brenna put an arm around the younger woman's shoulder and spoke to her quietly until it neared the time that they would need to leave to make the rest of their journey to the Last Homely House.

Ohtar watched Raina quietly from the other side of the camp where he was readying the horses. He was mentally berating himself for not making sure that she knew about Brenna's trips to the Valar. He made sure that the younger girls were situated before he made his way towards Raina and Brenna. Crouching down he offered to help her get her gear and things packed. Raina nodded her head in thanks and shyly allowed him to help her.

Brenna watched the exchange in bemusement and shook her head guiltily. She hadn't realized that the younger girls didn't know that her "trips" happened often when she was sleeping. Shaking herself from her musings she set about packing her things and getting ready to leave.

Soon the whole company had their gear packed and they were ready to move out. By midday they would be arriving at the outer border of Imladris. Brenna mounted Hiril and followed the group out of the encampment. Elladan and Elrohir had scouted ahead to check their path and the borders of their homeland. Brenna and the ladies of the company were protectively encircled as they traveled.

A few hours later Elladan and Elrohir had returned, but with them were a few familiar faces. Brenna grinned when she saw that Beleg and his company were with them. Beleg caught her eye and smiled slightly. He nodded his head to her in acknowledgment and spoke quietly with his kinsmen. Brenna could tell by his tense posture that there would need to be a meeting held when they arrived in Imladris. All did not appear to be well judging by the tight set to Beleg's jaw. It was something that most of the company had observed. They kept their thoughts and observations to themselves so as not to worry the young girls present.

Brenna and the rest of her Guard exchanged looks and subtle nods. Brenna turned and looked at Aragorn with a grim set to her mouth and nodded to him. He looked at his 'little sister' with sad eyes and returned her nod. It was quietly passed through the group that something wasn't right. They quickened their pace and entered the outer border of Imladris within a couple of hours. They did not stop their rigorous pace until they had reached the Last Homely House. Lord Glorfindel and Lord Celeborn greeted them on the steps of the main hall. Brenna dismounted and turned to grab her things only to find that Elladan was already there helping her. She made sure that Raina and the girls were all set and allowed Elladan to lead her up the steps to the Halls of his father.

Brenna followed him down the familiar hallways to the rooms that she had stayed in all those years ago. He let her in the room and allowed her to step in. Inside she smiled seeing that everything was left just as she had remembered. There were the trunks that had been taken here by the elves traveling West stacked neatly to the left of the door. She smiled and nodded to Elladan as he took his leave of her.

He paused at the door and turned back to her with a concerned look on his face. "Will you be alright melamin?" he asked her.

"Aye, Elladan. I will be alright. I just want to freshen up before we gather in your study to go over whatever news Beleg has." Brenna told him quietly.

Elladan nodded and took his leave. He shut the door of Brenna's room securely behind him and made his way down the hallway to his own set of rooms. His mind was on Brenna; his instincts were screaming at him to get her far, far away and not let her continue on westward towards the Shire. He shook himself from his musings and stripped his travel clothes and stepped into the bath.

Meanwhile down the hall Oriel and the girls were settling into rooms next to and across from Brenna. They were being housed in the rooms of the family and high officials rather than the typical guest rooms on the other side of the dwelling. Raina, Alanna, and Beatrice were looking around with wide eyes. To them it was like something out of a fairytale. The building was beautiful. They would be sharing a room for comfort and ease. Oriel settled the young ones into their room and made her way across the hall to her own room. She quickly freshened and changed before making her way to Brenna's rooms.

Brenna was brushing out her hair at the vanity when a knock on her door startled her from her musings. She called to enter and smiled as Oriel stepped into the room. Her friend and companion shut the door and helped her step into a burgundy colored elvish dress. The underdress and layers were of a soft rose color. The edging of the gown had the telltale silver stars and Celtic knots stitched into the fabric. Brenna traced the silver thread with her hands. She smoothed out the fabric before sitting down to braid back her hair away from her face in two small braids while leaving the rest of her hair flowing freely down her back. She put on both of her necklaces as well as the delicate headdress from Colfinell and turned to look for a leather pair of slippers. Once found the two elleths turned and left the room. They made their way to the study that was used by Lord Celeborn and Lord Elrond before him.

They entered the room and Elladan stepped forward to lead her to the chair next to his. Oriel seated herself nearby. Aragorn sat on the other side of Brenna, while Elrohir sat on the other side of his brother. Across from them were Lord Celeborn and Lord Glorfindel. The other delegates and members of Brenna's Guard filled in the rest of the room. Once everyone necessary was present they shut the doors and stationed guards outside. Brenna observed those present and had a chilling sense of dread overwhelm her. She turned and looked at Beleg who had a grim set to his features. He caught Brenna's eye and nodded slowly.

Brenna sat stunned wondering how much time they really had. She was certain that what she had seen would give them five years to prepare, but it seemed that something had happened. She was lost in her thoughts as the meeting was called to order. When Beleg started speaking she turned to face him. With a growing sense of fear she listened as he reported that already in Arnor and as far northwest as the Bay of Forochel had already been experiencing the menacing presence of the Shadow Wraith. The Dunedain Rangers were reporting that livestock was going missing and that there were two known fishing vessels that had seemingly vanished from the seas with no explanation.

Brenna sat listening and felt her breathing become uneven. She trembled as she felt the onslaught of the visions crash through her. Flash! She watched as a mist rose up out of the sea and took two fishing ships by surprise. She could hear the anguished cries of terror through the mist. Flash! She saw the Shadow Wraith was slowly stalking the lands under the cover of darkness. Flash! She saw her allies assembling. Flash! She saw herself drawing her sword and being surrounded by mist. She could feel its icy cold grip and menacing laugh. Flash! Flash! Flash!

"Brenna!" Aragorn urged her to snap out of it. He could feel her trembling and her skin was icy cold.

Elladan and his brother knelt next to her. Aragorn and the Sons of Elrond were running their hands over her and whispering in elvish. Brenna's Guard watched in concern as she seemed to be battling something beyond their reach. Elladan tried to remain calm even as the fear and concern for his love overwhelmed him. The three continued their chanting, trying to draw her back to them. They watched as her breath came out icy cold, so cold that they could see it. Her Guard drew nearer and added their voices to the chanting. Oriel knelt in front of her friend and lent her voice and what limited healing powers that she had.

Brenna fought even as the cold seemed to overwhelm her senses. Silently she prayed to the Valar for help and strength. With a mighty white flash of power they lent her their aid. The Shadow Wrath was thrown off and injured as it snarled in pain and disappeared. Elbereth then went to her and held her as Manwe and the other Valar surround her. The fury etched on their faces was frightening.

"Hush child," Elbereth soothed. "We've got you now. Peace little one, all is well."

Brenna relaxed into her embraced and shifted slightly as Manwe stepped forward to carry her through the confusing maze in which the Shadow Wraith had entrapped her in. He had somehow drawn her from her visions and led her to get lost within a realm all his own. All around them was shrouded in mist and shadows. Brenna was shivering from the cold. Manwe warmed her as he led the way back through the maze and shifted them back to Valinor. He strode tall and purposefully into His Halls. He gently laid her on a chaise as Elbereth stepped forward and wrapped her in a thick cloak. They soothed their young charge. Their anger was palpable.

"He will answer for this!" Lorien stated fiercely. "This will not stand."

"Calm brother," Manwe urged. "It will not go unanswered, rest assured the Shadow Wraith and those responsible will be brought to justice for this travesty. Now however we must focus on Brenna."

Elbereth sat with the young elleth and sang to her softly while Este worked to heal and sooth the trembling elleth. Each of the Valar gathered round and murmured their blessing over the elleth and kissed her brow as she drifted to a deep healing sleep. Once she was settled the Valar convened in a meeting.

"We shall need to send them more help, her more help." Elbereth said strongly.

The others nodded in agreement. "Aye, it shall be so," Manwe stated. "We will need to address those that are here in these Halls and those that reside in Valinor to see who would volunteer to help."

"The fallen?" Nienna asked sadly.

"Aye the fallen," Manwe said thoughtfully. "Those that have the courage to fight once more. I will give them a choice to step out of these Halls into Valinor and aboard a ship to Arda to fight with our chosen one."

The group talked for hours while Brenna slept in their presence. Elbereth stood and brushed Brenna's brow softly. "Go now child, back with our blessings and protection. We will be watching ever more carefully now. It shall not harm you in our visions again little one."

Brenna was made aware of her return by the sound of weeping. She stirred and drew a shaky breath causing the person holding her to cry out in alarm. Other voices and hands overwhelmed her as she struggled to regain consciousness. She felt the familiar presence of Elladan holding her and rocking her. She burrowed her face into the crook of his neck and breathed in his woodsy scent. Brenna felt him tighten his arms around her.

"I thought that I had lost you," he choked out hoarsely. "You went so cold and then you were gone. You stopped breathing." He said while resting his cheek on her head.

Elladan sat down and continued holding her. Though not completely appropriate, he needed the comfort of having her near and hearing her heart beat steadily. The others in the room were not much better. Her Guard felt the instant that she had left them much like Elladan had. Aragorn and the other men present were just as affected. Oriel sat nearby, clearly shaken and recovering from the grief that had sunk in when she felt her friend leave.

"Can you tell us what happened mela?" Elladan asked.

"Gwathel, are you well?" Legolas asked emotionally.

Brenna pulled her face away from Elladan's shoulder and looked up into his eyes. She could see the pain there and the joy that was returning. Laying her hand on his cheek she sought to lend him some comfort. He swallowed thickly and closed his eyes leaning into her touch. He rested his own hand on hers before bringing it to his lips. Brenna smiled at him and turned to face the others. Clearing her throat she told them of what she had seen and experienced. They had paled when they realized that she was almost lost to them. Each of them thanked the Valar and prayed for their continued help.

"So it begins," Aragorn stated quietly. "Are you sure that you're alright Brenna?"

"I'm better. Had they not intervened I don't want to think about what would have happened," Brenna told him. "I was so cold. It was only when they brought me back to Valinor to recover that I started to feel again. They held council and I'm pretty sure that they will be sending more help, but I can't be sure I wasn't awake."

"What do you mean?" Elrohir asked in concern.

"Elbereth and Este soothed me to sleep and rest. I was in the room of the Hall with them, but they watched over me as I slept," she answered them.

"How was the Shadow Wraith able to get you Brenna?" Aragorn asked.

"I'm not sure and I don't think that the Valar knew for certain either, but I can tell you that they were furious." She answered him quietly. "They were able to reach me and I'm fine now. That's all that matters to me. It cannot reach me in that realm anymore. They've limited its powers to reach me. Though in the physical world, I fear that it will be too much for me alone."

"You won't be alone love," Elladan told her fiercely. "How soon before we need to face it?"

Brenna shook her head in concern and bit her lip. "I'm not sure. I thought we would have five years before the major confrontation, but I truly fear that it will now retaliate. I fear that the timeline is now skewed. We may now only have two or three years at most if we are lucky. I just pray that it's enough time to gather allies and make the necessary preparations."

"Just two years?" Gimli asked. "Lass, that's not enough time to refortify the North and prepare defenses."

"Well it's not as if I had planned it to be this way Gimli," Brenna said in exasperation causing the dwarf to flush in mild embarrassment.

Aragorn stood and faced the assembled group. "Envoys will need to be sent out and preparations will need to be made. We cannot leave our own borders defenseless so soon after the War, but we can send aid and enough help to fight back this foe."

There were brief conversations throughout the group. Haleth had selected his fastest Rider and two others to accompany him. The representatives of the other realms did the same. Gimli requested that a messenger be sent to his clan and his cousin. Brenna was carefully put on her feet as Elladan stood and took her hand in his own. The group broke and went their separate ways to make the necessary arrangements to enact their plans. Elladan led Brenna through the halls to a private courtyard. Oriel and the rest of Brenna's Guard followed closely behind and sat with the two elves.

"Brenna," Oriel began, "how are you feeling?"

"Tired, but I'm alright." Brenna said sitting on a bench leaning into Elladan's side. "It was so strange. It had me trapped and I couldn't get out. It attacked in my vision and there was nothing that I could do."

"What can be done to help?" Haldir asked.

With a shrug Brenna replied, "Not much. The Valar have done what they can to protect me."

"Should you have someone with you at all times?" Elrohir asked looking concerned.

Brenna shook her head, "No, whether I'm alone or with others, there's really not anything that can be done if I'm subjected to such an attack again."

None of her friends looked pleased or comforted by that statement. Brenna just sat on the bench listening to the soothing sound of the Falls of Rauros. She quietly began humming the songs of Elbereth and felt her brow warm in response. A warm gentle breeze swirled around them in response. She felt Elladan squeeze her hand in comfort and smiled.

Brenna opened her eyes and found her friends sitting around talking and getting some much needed rest. It had been a long and trying journey from Minas Tirith to Imladris. They were all feeling the weariness from their journey. They would spend a week in Imladris before setting out to the Shire. They and their horses needed the rest and they needed to restock their provisions.

Brenna opened her eyes to see Lord Celeborn and Lord Glorfindel entering the clearing with Aragorn. She stood as the entered and smiled at them in greeting. Aragorn went to her side and checked her over once more himself. Lord Glorfindel greeted his kinsmen in the traditional warriors greeting before turning to Brenna.

"Well met Lady Brenna," Glorfindel said while nodding his head respectfully to her. "The Valar visited me one night in my dreams last year. They told me that my aid would be needed to fight against an ancient foe. I am honored to stand with you to fight this foe."

Brenna smiled at him shakily. "Your help is most welcome Lord Glorfindel. The Shadow Wraith is stalking these shores even now. It somehow managed to reach me in my dreams and my visions. It is nothing like I have ever faced before. This evil is something darker and more malevolent than the Nazgul that I faced."

"Nazgul?" Lord Glorfindel asked in surprise. "I had heard stories of your deeds milady, but I had not thought that one so young would face such evil and live to tell the tale."

Brenna smirked, "Looks can be deceiving. I'm a capable fighter, but I fear I will need all the help that I can get when it is time to face down the Shadow Wraith."

Lord Glorfindel smiled at the young elleth. "Perhaps we can spar on the morrow and see what you're capable of?" he asked with a mischievous look on his face.

When her companions went to protest she held up hand. "Of course milord," Brenna said with a grin. "I look forward to facing off against such a formidable sparring partner."

He nodded to her with a smile and gave a small wink as Lord Celeborn stepped forward to greet her. He pulled her into an embrace, "How are you feeling young one?" he asked.

"I am well, much better than I was before," she replied.

He noticed her necklaces and looked at her inquiringly seeing the unfamiliar pendant. Brenna grinned, holding up the large teardrop sapphire and mithril necklace from Gimli's cousin Thorin.

"Twas a gift from the King under the mountain," she explained with sparkling green eyes. "Gimli's kinsmen are generous and noble."

The aforementioned dwarf flushed and puffed out his chest in response. Brenna chuckled and explained more of her travels to Lord Celeborn and the others. She explained to them everything that had happened and would be happening in the coming years. Her account was met with a few raised eyebrows, but admiring looks. The elvish lords began to make the necessary plans to make sure that they were able to aid their young elleth, for she was theirs to guide and protect.

The group took the much needed rest that they needed. Brenna took the time to show the girls around Rivendell during their stay. Elladan would often accompany them and guide them around his home. He took pleasure in sharing stories of his youth with Brenna and the other girls as they walked under the bows of the trees through the various gardens. Brenna went through the collection of her belongings in her rooms and carefully packaged everything in the various chests and containers that they were brought in. Lady Colfinell and Lady Galadriel had nearly entire wardrobes of elvish attire made for her and brought here. She realized that Arwen had also had clothing made and kept in the wardrobe in her room. There were a number of trinkets and heirlooms from her parents Talan that had been brought to Rivendell for her.

She was sitting at her vanity one afternoon humming to herself when a particularly strong vision swamped her. Dark clouds and shadows engulfed her, shrouding the predator that now stalked her. Chills ran down her spine as she felt the cold air and rumbling, menacing laugh surrounding her. Her feet seemed frozen in place. She couldn't move her limbs even as the Shadow Wraith loomed before her. Her eye darted around her looking for help, for some sort of escape. As the great beast reared up and back with its massive jaws stretching wide and then lunging forward, the vision changed. Flash! Samwise sat staring out his window overlooking the Shire. Flash! Lothíriel approached Eomer with her news. Flash! Their remaining enemies were beginning to grow restless. There was talk of retribution and revenge. Flash! Flash! Flash!

With a groan she pulled herself from it and forced the vision back. She felt strong arms around her, holding her and anchoring her back to reality. She heard voices around her, but couldn't quite focus on them. Her body shivered from and unseen cold even as Elladan tugged a blanket snugly around her and cradled her to his chest. Raina was kneeling next to her, holding her hand.

"You're back with us now," the younger girl told her thickly. "I felt something was wrong and came to check on you. The room felt ice cold and you were slumping over in your seat when I came in the room. You weren't responding so I sent the girls to get help. I couldn't leave you alone."

Brenna smiled weakly at her and rested her head against Elladan's chest. "I'm glad that I wasn't alone," she said shakily. "That vision was too strong. It wasn't an attack on me again, but it does involve the Shadow Wraith."

Elladan tightened his grip reflexively at her words and swallowed back his emotions. He could feel the cold of her skin. Even now wrapped warmly he could still feel the cold. He looked around the room and saw that her Guard had responded immediately to the frantic calls and cries for help from the younger girls. Nodding to them, he knew that they would have to convene again to discuss what was to come. If this foe held this much power now, he feared for his love for when they finally faced it. He looked at Lord Glorfindel and nodded grimly to the elder. He was the only one present who even came close to knowing what they would be fighting against.

Aragorn knelt next to Brenna and ran his hand over her brow. He had feared the worst when they came into her room to find her body frigid and convulsing. She was mumbling, but unresponsive to them. It had taken the combined power of her Elvish Guard, Lords Celeborn and Glorfindel and himself to draw her back to them. It concerned him greatly to know that the closer they got to the beast, the more it affected her.

Brenna allowed Elladan to lift her and carry her out of her room towards the Main Hall. He called for the fire to be re-lit in the large fireplace and gentle placed her in a chair nearby. A crowd had formed around them as a few elves worked quickly to get the fire roaring. Brenna still shivered as she felt her limbs thaw. She stared at the flames and collected her thoughts.

"This is going to be more difficult than I think any of us had anticipated," she paused. "I think that the Shadow Wraith has more power than we can begin to know. It thrives on cold and ice. My own Elements are Wind and Water, so I should be able to wield some power against it, but there is so much more to it. Melkor is using this agent of evil for revenge. His minions even now plot to do his bidding."

Voices all around burst out at once. The myriad of sounds assaulted Brenna's ears and throbbing head. Elladan called for them to quiet as he saw and felt her pain rolling off of her.

"With your help I was able to pull out of that vision and my power naturally rolled into others," she said with a tired smile. "King Eomer will be getting some wonderful news from his queen soon."

The statement caused cheers to ring out, especially with the men present. Fram and Haleth grinned at Brenna happily, knowing that their king and friend would be beside himself at the thought of a child. It would be a happy time for their home.

Brenna stared into the fire once more and told them the rest of what she had seen. The news of trouble with the Easterlings and Haradrim had many of them concerned, especially when they would be facing the Shadow Wraith shortly before that.

Brenna pulled the blanket tighter around herself as she let the warmth of the fire seep in. Closing her eyes she prayed to the Valar for strength and guidance. She felt the answering warmth on her brow and smiled. She drew comfort in the knowledge that they wouldn't be alone. Even as the thought crossed her mind, her conscious thoughts were drawn gently to another vision, which she knew was sent from the Valar. In it she saw a ship preparing to leave the shores of Valinor. Upon it boarded strong and tall warriors that had heeded the call of the Valar. Some had been given the choice to return from the Halls of Mandos and be given life once more, but in payment they were asked to fight. It would be their last request of these noble beings. She watched as the elves waved towards their kin and began sailing towards Arda.

Brenna sat up and stood quickly, nearly tumbling to the ground. Elladan caught and steadied her on her feet. Those present in the room looked at her in concern and waited for her response.

"What is it Brenna?" Elladan asked.

She struggled for words. Her large green eyes filled with tears, startling and alarming those present. "Help is on the way," she told him thickly. "The Valar are sending more help."

"Help?" he asked cautiously hopeful.

"Yes help," Brenna said with a watery smile. "I need to make haste towards the Gray Havens. The ship will dock just a week after we reach the Shire. I will have to make my time much shorter with Samwise."

"When you say help you mean that there are elves returning from Valinor?" Aragorn asked in disbelief.

"Not just Valinor my friend," Brenna said quietly. She turned towards Lord Glorfindel. "Many were given a choice, but it comes at a price. For their return to the living, those that have passed to the Halls of Mandos have been tasked to aid Arda one last time. Some of the great warriors and kings of old are returning."

"Lass," Gimli interjected. "You'll have all the allies that you need to face the Shadow. You mustn't give up. Were there any dwarves by any chance?"

"I'm afraid not my friend," she told him somewhat sadly. "Though, I'm confident that I'll have more than enough dwarves here in Arda at my side."

She stood near the fire with the silver stars shining brightly on her brow. Drawing a deep breath she knew that the fight ahead of them wouldn't be without loss or pain. She prayed that those coming to her aid would be kept safe, that they would survive. The group dispersed and retired to their rooms for the night.

The next morning Brenna dressed in a tunic and grabbed her weapons. She made her way through the halls to grab something to eat before going to the training areas. In the large dining hall she was greeted by Lord Glorfindel already breaking his fast and her Guard. She sat at one of the long tables and ate a light breakfast before joining Lord Glorfindel on his way out to the practice and training fields. Walking along the familiar paths she smiled and waved to the familiar faces along her way. The members of her Guard followed behind her ready to get in some practice of their own.

Lord Glorfindel placed his extra weapons on a nearby bench and turned to face Brenna. He smiled at her and bowed towards her while unsheathing his sword. Brenna repeated his actions and faced off against him. The two circled one another for a few brief moments before their blades met in a clash. Lord Glorfindel seemed to move with blinding speed and Brenna struggled to keep up with her opponent. She knew that she was outclassed and facing a far superior opponent. She ducked and parried and fought to maintain her ground. She spun out and jumped back when his blade came at her mid-section. She knew that he was testing her skill and pushing her further than any of her sparring partners previously.

The fight lasted for a solid fifteen minutes before Brenna's arms began to tire. Though she was now a seasoned fighter, it had been some time since she had fought in a prolonged battle. By now both of them were showing signs of weariness, but continued to press on. Brenna blocked, and ducked when Lord Glorfindel slashed his blade out at her. She turned, ducked and threw her leg out, catching him off guard briefly before her pressed back towards her with a renewed furor. Brenna's arms throbbed with the exertion and strain. Lord Glorfindel locked blades with her before flicking his wrist and wrenching her blade from her hands. He bowed to her with a grin on his face.

"You fight well little one," Lord Glorfindel said.

Elladan entered the practice ring and grabbed Brenna's sword where it had landed. Elrohir was right behind him was a cloth for Brenna to wipe her brow with. They had been the ones to initially train her and had worked with her since then to hone her skills. Both of them were extremely proud that she had lasted so long in the ring with Lord Glorfindel who had helped to train them so many years ago. All of Brenna's Guard were beaming with pride and slight awe of watching Brenna sparring so well. She had literally lasted in the ring with a Legend.

Brenna sat on the bench with the rest of her gear and accepted the canteen of water that was handed to her by a grinning Legolas. She looked and saw the other members of her Guard standing nearby with similar expressions of amusement. For many of them they had been worried about the outcome. They knew that Lord Glorfindel would never intentionally hurt her, but he wouldn't necessarily hold back on her.

Elladan sat next to her and talked to her quietly as the group began to pair off and spar. It was a good release of tension and stress for the group. Brenna joined Legolas and some of the others at the archery range and began brushing up and honing her skills there. It only took her two shots to hit the center ring. She went through a series of targets at varying distances and put herself through the paces.

After a brief break she faced off against Elrohir with the twin blades. She let everything around her fall away and she focused solely on her opponent. It was only instinct that had her ducking and facing the surprise attack from behind that Legolas had given. Now she was facing both of them with her twin blades. Luckily she had her sword in the scabbard at her hip and two daggers as well. They were not holding back on her and were pressing their advantage as much as they could.

Where one would attack the other would circle. Brenna knew that she was in trouble. She was trying very hard to thwart both attacks. She ducked and felt the air whoosh over her neck. Rolling she kicked out her leg and knocked Legolas off of his feet while bringing one blade up to block the thrust from Elrohir. She pushed herself to her feet and kicked Legolas's blade away and quickly turned back to Elrohir. Her brow was drenched in sweat and she fought to hold them off. She lost one blade and then another and unsheathed her sword and her larger dagger. They continued fighting for another five minutes before she was completely disarmed.

Her chest was heaving by the end. She had sustained a couple of cuts and minor scratches in the sparring match, but she gave as good as she got. Elladan crouched next to her and checked her over. Her limbs were shaking and her breathing was beginning to come in erratic gasps. Her eyes rolled back and Elladan caught her as the visions swamped her.

Flash! They greeted the ship of warriors in the Gray Havens. Flash! The Dunedain were beginning to rebuild some of the old fortresses and watch towers of old. Flash! King Thorin was calling together a host of dwarves to aid in the rebuilding and preparations for the upcoming battle against the Shadow. Flash! Lothíriel was in labor. Flash! Flash! Flash!

Elladan swept the tired elleth up in his arms and took the steps two at a time back up to the halls. He made his way down the corridors to her rooms where he was met by Oriel and Raina. Elrohir and Aragorn were right behind him as well as Lords Celeborn and Glorfindel. It was obvious to them that she was exhausted and had been pushed to her limit for the time being. When they were certain that she was now resting peacefully, they took their leave and left her with the females to be changed and bathed.

Stepping into the hallway the males looked at each other before making their way to the study. The rest of Brenna's Guard was there waiting for news. Once everyone was situated around the room the door was shut.

"She fought well, extremely well," Lord Glorfindel said somewhat surprised. "Lady Brenna has gained a lot of skill with both blade and bow in her short time here in Arda."

"Aye she has," Lord Celeborn said.

"Let us hope that it is enough," Elladan said wearily.

Lord Glorfindel turned and looked at Elladan in concern. "You must believe in her and the Valar. You must believe in yourself that nothing will happen to her and that she will be fine my friend."

"She has already been hurt more than once on our watch," Elladan said almost desperately. "How are we supposed to defend her from this ancient evil?"

Elrohir looked at his brother in concern and a little anger. He reached over and smacked him on the back of the head. "Don't let her hear you talking like that Elladan. She needs you to pull it together and be strong for her."

Elladan closed his eyes and took a deep cleansing breath. He knew that they were right but seeing her so tired and hurt so often was something that was beginning to take its toll on him. He prayed silently to the Valar for the strength, courage, and will to be there and do what he must for her. He opened his eyes and nodded at them grimly.

"Aye, you're right," he said quietly. "I mustn't despair. She is stronger than any of us know and I need to remember and hold on to the fact that she has seen us all after this, decades beyond."

The males discussed tactics and strategy. They planned numbers and positions and logistics for their forces. They would slowly bring in groups over the next year or two to make ready for the Shadow Wraith. They would do all that they could to make the clash with the foul beast as much to their advantage as possible. They spent the rest of the afternoon planning and making the arrangements.

Meanwhile back in Brenna's room they had stripped her of her dirty and sweaty tunic. It was sent to be mended and laundered. Gently the tended her wounds and bathed her before dressing the unconscious elleth in a soft shift and night shirt. Oriel sat in a chair next to her friend's bed reading while Raina sat doing needlepoint on the settee in the corner. Beatrice and Alanna were next to her practicing their own sewing. The ladies kept vigil over their sleeping friend and took turns sitting with her throughout the night. All the while Brenna slept deeply and peacefully under the careful watch of her friends and the Valar.
