The drive was fairly short as both Jack and Jerry tried to take as much of the outside in as they possibly could knowing their time was limited. They pulled up to a gated and fenced area as the two cops showed their badges and then drove in, driving to the back of the jail as four people, two men and two women in suits and with briefcases were waiting for them. Once the car was parked, the two officers helped Jack and Jerry out of the car and then handed them over to the four who escorted Jack and Jerry into the building and in different directions.

Jack and Jerry were placed in two separate rooms as the questioning was about to begin and the truth was gong to come out. "Hello Mr. Brewer, I'm DA Flinster and this is ADA Roberts. We'll be working on your case but for you to get the justice you deserve, you need to be completely honest with us, understood?" Mr. Flinster asked.

"Yes sir", Jack replied.

At the same time, Jerry was also getting questioned by his attorney. "Mr. Martinez, I'm DA McGabel and this is ADA Benson. We'll be asking you questioned regarding Mr. Clarkson and his group of men and we need you to be one-hundred- percent truthful with us. Are you ready?" Mrs. McGabel questioned.

"Yes ma'am", Jerry nodded.

"Before the incident, how long you have you known Mr. Clarkson?" Mr. Flinster wondered.

"Ten, almost eleven years", Jack responded.

"How did you two meet?" Mrs. McGabel probed.

"Well, I wasn't having the best family life around that time, so I liked to wander the streets to get away from it all and one day I saw Curlex and his gang hanging out by this biker bar. They were rough and mean looking but they were surprising nice to me and even gave me money to go buy something, sensing I needed a snack or a soda being was I was only ten and walking around by myself. Anyways, he was cool and so the next day I walked back over to return his money but he wouldn't take it back but he did say, "If you ever need a place to go, you know where to find us", as he walked away. That was the first time someone ever offered me another place to go and when things got difficult he was there for me", Jerry explained.

"And so, what did you do for him?" Mrs. Roberts inquired.

"Well, in the beginning nothing much. We just couldn't tell anyone where we were or what was going on, which was fine because we didn't have the slightest clue anyways. Curlex's motto was, "The less you and people know, the better". Then, once we were there for a longer period of time, we were allowed to go with them on their 'missions 'but were only used as their lookout. And once Curlex found us worthy enough, he made us do a solo 'mission or task' and if we passed, we were officially one of them. We were a part of the group and had your own new set of rules and jobs we had to do". Jack said.

"And what do you mean by new set of rules and jobs? What did you guys do?" Mr. Benson pushed.

"Well, once we joined Curlex, we had to follow his rules and what he expected from us. We obeyed him and didn't think too much of it because these rules were like the rules you learned in school. We had to behave and do what was asked of us. We had to be careful and never question his intentions. He always put our rules as life lessons and things we should always live by. And we did a lot of things but mostly collecting peoples' debts or other items they owed Curlex", Jerry retorted.

"You talked about passing a 'mission or task' and collecting debt; what did that entail of? Meetings? Blackmail?" Mr. Flinster questioned.

"Er, kind of. For the passing the mission part, we had to collect a debt or something that belonged to Curlex without getting caught. And for collecting the other debt, well, that's a little more complicated. Yeah there were meetings, but like in secret, behind closed doors. We did blackmail people past a certain point and then if we still didn't have what we needed, there was breaking in that sometimes involved physical contact as it was necessary to retrieve the item", Jack confessed.

"Ok, so what happened that night Mr. Clarkson got shot?" Mrs. McGabel moved on.

"Well, Jack and I got a text message from Curlex telling us we needed to come over. We went, arguments happened, Jack and I tried to protect ourselves and then shots just started getting fired", Jerry described.

"So all of this just happened? No one planned any of this out?" Mrs. Roberts clarified.

"Correct. We honestly thought it was just another meeting of some sort but when we saw the guns, everything just seemed off", Jack responded.

The DA and ADA's shared a look with one another and silently agreed that they had enough information and wrapped up their interrogation. "Ok, thank you Mr. Brewer, Mr. Martinez. We'll be in contact with your court date soon. Just try to stay calm and out of trouble", Mr. Benson nodded as he and the others left the room.

Once Jack and Jerry were alone, another set of officers came in and took them to central booking as they needed to get thoroughly searched and put into the system. After all that was done, Jack and Jerry caught a fast glance at one another as they both nodded as in saying, "Good luck", and got led in different directions not being allowed to communicate with one another as they were labeled as 'accomplice 1' and 'accomplice 2'.

Jerry ended up in the east wing in a single cell which was nice, but poor Jack, he ended up in the west wing with a roommate who looked around two-fifty, was all muscle with tattoos and scars and who could easy smash Jack into pieces if he ever pissed him off so Jack's goal was to just stay on his side of the cell at all times.

The minutes seems to tick by slowly as within the next few hours that Jack had been locked up, his parents came to visit him. He was allowed to speak to them in one of the interrogation rooms privately as the officers saw how fragile and shocked the mother looked. As soon as Bethany saw Jack enter the room in handcuffs, she embraced him in a tight hug, not knowing what was happening. "Jack, what did you do?" she cried as they both took their seats.

"It's a long story and I can't tell you just yet. Just please, try to understand and know that I'm so incredibly sorry", Jack whispered softly.

"Oh sweetheart", Bethany replied, grabbing his hands and giving them a gentle squeeze.

"Is it really that bad?" James wondered, joining the conversation.

"James! Look at where we are. It kind of has to be for our son to end up in jail", Bethany hissed.

"Beth, you need to calm down. And who knows how bad it really is. You haven't been accused of anything yet, right?" James continued.

"Er, not exactly", Jack mumbled.

"Excuse me?" both James and Bethany questioned.

"Like I said, it's a long story but my attorney seems good and I know this will all get straightened out", Jack assured.

"Wait…so you have an attorney? Are you going court?" Bethany inquired.

"Yeah, I have an attorney. Two actually and I am, just don't know when", Jack answered.

"Good heavens Jack. What the hell have you gotten yourself in to?" Bethany murmured, shaking her head at her eldest son. "Does this also have to do with Hilary and why she was in the hospital? And Kim?"

Jack looked down at the table and just nodded his head, not being able to answer as he hated to think of what he put his sister and ex-girlfriend through because this wasn't how it was supposed to end.

Bethany hated seeing Jack so vulnerable and lost but knew that whatever Jack did, there was a reason behind it and eventually everything would work out. "Honey, I know you're in a difficult spot right now but just know that your father and I will always be here for you", Bethany smiled.

"And support you no matter what", James added.

"Thanks mom, dad", Jack responded, returning the smile.

James and Bethany nodded and sensed their conversation was over for the moment as three got up. His parents giving him and hug and Bethany kissed his cheek as they left. Jack smiled and waved one last time knowing that he had to be strong for his family.

On the way back to his cell, Jack asked an officer for a few pieces of paper, envelopes and a pen needing to write something very important. Of course they didn't give it to him but the more Jack pestered them and explained his reason, they finally gave in and as soon as he got his items he went straight to work. The first one was to Kim, needing to send her luck and love for her new journey.

"Dearest Kim", it began. "Though it's only been two weeks, almost three , I miss you so much. I hope you're doing well and enjoying touring with Brighton. I know you're going to kill it every night you perform, so break a leg for me. Nothing's new with me, just waiting for a court date but it seems to be pretty straightforward so I know I'll find out soon. Please, take care of yourself and remember that I love you.

Love, Jack"

After Jack folded the letter and put it in the envelope, he realized that he didn't know where to send it so he quickly wrote another letter, hoping they would help him out.

"Dear Haley", he wrote, "I'm sure by now you're confused, angry, lonely and sad. I'm sorry for what happened and I promise to explain everything in my next letter to you but the reason I'm writing to you now is because I need your help. And before you roll your eyes or throw this letter away, just know that it's not illegal or anything like that. I need your help in getting my letters to Kim wherever she is and I know you know. I'm begging you, please help me as her letter will be sent out in a few days. Thanks and please, take care of yourself and look after Lou for Jerry and I.

Love, Jack".

He quickly folded up the letter and stuffed it into the envelope and scribbled an address down on the front, needing to get this out ASAP.

And while he was in a writing mood, he needed to write one last letter.

"Hey Jer, I just wanted to thank you for being the best friend a guy could ever ask for. We've had some pretty awesome and crazy adventures and knowing you, you're probably blaming yourself for the mess were in right now but don't. It's not your fault, trust me. We were both naïve and young back in the day but you have to admit it wasn't all bad and that at times he was a cool guy but it just sucks that we have to take the blame for his mess. Just stay calm and things will work out. Hopefully I'll see you soon. Stay strong bro.

Jack".

Once he was finished, he called over the officer and said, "I don't really know how this works but could you please send this two letters out for me.

The officer looked at Jack and then at the letters and replied, "I'm not supposed to but I'll help you out kid. But I do need to read what you wrote in case you holding back any evidence or conspiring with these people".

"I understand and its fine", Jack answered kindly.

Within minutes the officer was done reading the letters and gave Jack a short nod of approval and left. Jack smiled a real smile for the first time in weeks and felt a sense of relief as he realized he didn't have to worry about Curlex or anything regarding that work from here on out. It was over, they were free; well, kind of but the point was after all this was over, he and Jerry could go back and have a normal life, well as normal as it can be. The rest of the night went by fairly quickly as even though the beds were far from comfortable, Jack and Jerry had a reasonable amount of rest, probably due from the exhaustion.

The next day came and went as Jack just stayed in his cell, lying on his cot and stared up at his ceiling. Everything that has happened over the past few months seemed so unreal; like it was all just a horrible nightmare and for the first time in a longtime he said a prayer and only wished the outcome wouldn't join the rest of his awful memories. Evening soon approached as Jack and Jerry got called out to meet with their attorney's. All six crammed into one room as the four shared the next step of the process. "Well, we have it all sorted out". Mr. Flinster started.

"Mr. Brewer, your court date is on Monday and they're holding your bail at fifty thousand dollars. If you can't make bail, a car will escort you to the court house", Mrs. Roberts added.

"And Mr. Martinez, your court date is on Tuesday and like Mr. Brewer, your bail is set at fifty thousand dollars and if you can't make bail, you too will be escorted to the courthouse", Mrs. McGabel.

"But we do have some so not so good news", Mr. Benson mentioned.

Jack and Jerry shared a look and felt their stomachs drop. "Don't worry, it not as bad as it sounds but it is not what we wanted", Mr. Flinster quickly jumped in trying to ease their nerves.

"It's just that a judge will sentence you and not a jury like we wanted. Also, if you're charged you'll both be placed in different locations", Mrs. Roberts explained gently.

The two took in the information as Jack asked, "Why is a judge doing it?"

"Because the state of California is representing Mr. Clarkson and the attorney thinks that a jury will not be impartial considering your age and story. They'll think that the jurors will feel sorry for you and not give you the correct 'punishment'", Mrs. McGabel stated rolling her eyes.

"Oh…" both guys replied and nodded, understanding the reason.

"So, any other questions?" Mr. Benson asked.

"You said that Jack and I won't be together, right? So, where will we go?" Jerry wondered.

"We don't know for sure. Just another prison somehow in California". Mr. Flinster answered.

"And I was just wondering, why are our court dates different?" Jack threw in.

"We all decided that for you both to get an open-minded trial, you can't go together because it will look like conspiracy. We have to show it wasn't planned and that you guys aren't working together", Mrs. Roberts responded seriously.

The four saw the defeated expression on Jack and Jerry's faces as Mrs. McGabel said, "I know it seems grim now but trust us. We won't let anything bad happen to ether of you".

The guys nodded as Jack sighed, "Thank you all of you for helping us. We really do appreciate it".

"It's our job son but honestly, you two deserve a fighting chance. We know you didn't do anything wrong and you've both proven to be great young men. Just keep your head up", Mr. Benson smiled.

Jack and Jerry retuned the gesture, giving their attorney's a small smile as silence filed the air. Mr. Flinster knew their meeting was over as he finished, "Well, Mr. Brewer, Mr. Martinez, we'll see you in a few days", turning around to look at the others who nodded and gave a small wave before turning around and leaving the room.

Before the offer came back in to take Jack and Jerry back to their cells, they shared a hurried hug as Jerry quickly mumbled, "Thanks for the letter. Be safe, good luck and I love you bro".

"You too Jer and I love you too man", Jack whispered as they got pulled apart.

The next morning Bethany and James stopped by again after a getting call early this morning from DA Flinster who elucidated Jack's situation as best he could without sharing too much to them and even though they were ever more confused and still considerably angry, they promised it be there for support him.

Jerry's mother Marie also stopped by, crying hysterically about her son being in jail and having to go to court. "¿Por qué no me lo dijiste? e lo dijiste?" she cried.

"It's a long story ma. I'm sorry", Jerry replied.

"Don't be. I know you and I know you have your reasons, just promise me you'll be strong ok?" she wished.

"I promise", Jerry smiled, hugging his mother tightly for the fits time in years.

OoOoOoOo

The weekend went by fast as today was the day. Jack was being lead out to the awaiting car, dressed in a new suit, curtsey of Mrs. Roberts and Mrs., McGabel and was just hours away from facing his fate being decided by a judge that he hoped was reasonable and pleasant.

The drive was short and soon the car was entering the parking lot with Mr. Flinster and Mrs. Roberts already waiting for him. "Good morning Jack. How are you feeling?" Mrs. Roberts asked, fixing Jack's tie.

"Morning and I'm ok but nervous. Just trying to stay positive". Jack replied fidgeting.

"That's good to hear. Shall we head and get this show on the road?" Mr. Flinster asked Mrs. Roberts and Jack who both nodded and entered the courthouse through the back doors.

As the three were making their way through the halls to the courtroom, Jack heard someone yell, "Jackie!" and instantly turned around to see Sophia running towards him. He bent down as she jumped into his arms, wrapping her arms his neck and hugging him tightly. "I've missed you Jack", she cried into his neck.

"I've missed you too, so much Soph. Just know that I love you more than the world itself, ok", Jack assured her.

She just nodded and held on tight as Jack looked behind him to his attorneys' who nodded in understanding. Jack walked back over to his family as Luke also gave Jack a hug as Jack smirked, "Hey Bro".

His parents gave him a sad smile as his mother asked, "How are you holding up honey?"

"I'm ok. Just trying to not to think about it too much", Jack replied, shrugging his shoulders.

He caught Hilary's glance and handed Sophia, who was fighting him over to his mother and went to embrace his sister in a hug, whispering, "I'm so sorry", over and over in her ear.

"Don't be. It's not your fault but I'm just worried for you", Hilary mumbled as tears started to appear in the corner of her eyes.

"Don't worry worry about me, I'll be fine", Jack promised, kissing her hair.

"Jack", Mr. Flinster waved.

Jack nodded, hugged every one of his family members and then leaned down closer to Luke and whispered, "I need you to keep Sophia out here. I don't want her to hear any of this, ok?"

Luke nodded and took Sophia from his mom as Jack, his attorneys and his family entered the courtroom as within minutes, everyone was seated and the judge entered. "All rise for the honorable Judge Baker. Court is now in session", the bailiff spoke.

"Good morning everyone. Today we'll be looking a case number 4v420, Mr. Brewer verses California. Mr. Brewer, how do you plead?" Judge Baker asked.

"Not guilty", jack replied in a strong tone

"OK, who's the defendants first witness", the judge continued.

"We will like to call Mr. Brewer up to the stand", Mr. Flinster responded as Jack got up and made his way to the witness stand.

The bailiff walked over to Jack, told him place his left hand on the bible, raise his right as he was being read his oath. "Do you solemnly swear to affirm to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you god?"

"I do", Jack agreed as he took his seat.

"Mr. Brewer, on the night of August fourteenth when you meet Mr. Clarkson, it was a normal night, right?" Mr. Flinster asked.

"Yes", Jack answered.

"So, what went wrong then? Minus the ending", Mr. Flinster continued.

"Um, lots of things. Mr. Clarkson was angrier than I have even seen him and everyone had weapons, which I have never seen before either", Jack said.

"And why was he so angry?" Mr. Flinster wondered.

"Because I was lying to him and he found out", Jack shared, looking towards the ground.

"About what?" Mr. Flinster went on.

"That I didn't have a girlfriend when I did. We'd been dating for the past ten months", Jack responded.

"Ok, so you said that he got mad at that. What was he going to do about it?" Mr. Flinster pushed.

"That he was going to teach me a lesson", Jack growled, remembering the conversation.

"Objection your honor. Where is this going?" Mr. Penton yelled.

"Overruled but Mr. Flinster, I advise you to move this along", Judge Baker suggested.

"Yes sir", Mr. Flinster nodded and added, "So what happen then?"

"He kidnapped my sister and ex-girlfriend", Jack retorted.

"So, what did you do?" Mr. Flinster inquired.

"Well, I wanted to protect them the best I could so I told my friend to grab the gun one of the guards was holding when they weren't paying attention. Once we knocked out the two guys we had guns pointed at us so we pointed our guns back at them. The two guys got back up and we fought them again and one they were down for good, shots just starting getting fired and then everything happened so fast", Jack admitted.

"So, you're saying that you grabbed the gun to protect yourself and everything was in self-defense ", Mr. Flinster clarified.

"Yes sir", Jack nodded.

"Ok, thank you Mr. Brewer. That's all for right now", Mr. Flinster finished, giving Jack a small nod.

The other attorney, Mr. Penton, was listening carefully throughout Jack's testimony and though Jack seemed honest and calm, he was going to push him farther, getting the justice Mr. Clarkson deserves. He got up from his table and started to approach the witness stand and asked, "Mr. Brewer, it sounds like Mr. Clarkson wasn't a very pleasant man to you. Were you ever afraid of him?"

"No, not necessarily", Jack replied honestly.

"Could you please clarify that for me?" Mr. Penton requested.

'Um, yeah sure. So I was never afraid of Mr. Clarkson himself but was afraid of what he was capable of. I was afraid for my family and friends safety and I was afraid of some of the assignment we had to do", Jack explained.

"And exactly, what did you have to do?" Mr. Penton wondered.

"We had to collect what people owed Mr. Clarkson", Jack described.

"Like specific items? Money?" Mr. Penton inquired.

"Yeah, there were some specific items we had to regain, but those were rare. Most times the items were flash drives with information he needed", Jack answered.

"Were you ever curious about what you were retrieving?" Mr. Penton pushed.

"Yeah, of course", Jack retorted.

"Were you ever nosy enough to sneak around" Mr. Penton probed.

"No, that was one of Mr. Clarkson's rule. We never questioned his work or our jobs", Jack reminded.

"Ok, fair enough. Have you ever used or fired a firearm before that night?" Mr. Penton continued.

"No, I haven't", Jack affirmed.

Mr. Penton nodded and took a quick glance at his notes, deciding to move from that subject for the time being and then asked, "You mentioned a friend before, is he your accomplice? How did you two met?"

"No, he is not my accomplice but my best friend. We met when we at school when we were like eleven, maybe twelve", Jack shot back.

"So, was it him or you that met Mr. Clarkson?" Mr. Penton wondered.

"It was him", Jack mumbled.

"Ah, I see", Mr. Penton slightly smirked as he jotted something down in his notebook. "So, from my understanding, Mr. Clarkson could be a quote end quote a 'dangerous' man as you put it and you never expected or planned any of this, correct?"

"Yes", Jack replied slowly.

"It just seems crazy to me that all these things happened and that for a person who has never used a gun before kills the man that he wants to be free from", Mr. Penton shouts.

"OBJECTION!" Mr. Flinster yelled at the same time. "What evidence do you have that suggests my client killed Mr. Clarkson?"

"One of the bullets recovered from Mr. Clarkson's body traces back to the gun Mr. Brewer used during the incident", Mr. Penton shared

"How did you get that?" Mr. Flinster sneered, turning to face Mr. Penton.

"The investigators collected all the evidence from the house and dusted everything for prints. Once the results came back, Mr. Brewer and his 'friend' Mr. Martinez's names popped right up", Mr. Penton smiled.

Mr. Flinster was about to reply when Judge Baker stopped then. "I demand order in this court. Mr. Flinster, please keep your comments to yourself until it's your turn for questioning. And Mr. Penton, stop patronizing the defendant and throwing out accusations. I feel its time for a break so, Mr. Penton, are you finished questioning Mr. Brewer?" he asked.

"I have one more question your honor, may I?" Mr. Penton tested.

"Very well, but last one", Judge Baker warned and Mr. Penton approached Jack again.

"I'm sorry for throwing accusations into this Mr. Brewer. I know you say that this was all in some way self-defense but do you think that maybe subconsciously when you had that gun in your hand that you truly wanted to kill Mr. Clarkson?" Mr. Penton pressed.

"Objection your honor", Mr. Flinster roared before Jock could answer.

"Sustain. I do have to agree with Mr. Flinster. Mr. Penton, I already warned you about your behavior. If you keep badgering the witness, you leave me no choice than to make my ruling right now", Judge Baker informed sternly.

"Sorry your honor", Mr. Penton grumbled.

"Alright, there will be an hour recess. I advise both councilmen to get your act together and your heads out of your asses. Court will resume at eleven", Judge Baker finished as he got up from his chair.

Mr. Penton quickly exited the courtroom as Jack walked back to Mr. Flinster and Mrs. Roberts. "You're doing great Jack. Just keep your head up", Mr. Flinster smiled proudly.

"Go, hang out with your family. We'll get you when its time", Mrs. Roberts suggested, patting Jack's back.

Jack nodded in agreement and walked over to his family to see his mother sobbing into his dad's shoulder and that sight alone broke his heart even more. The four exited the courtroom as James kept looking at Jack, not believing that his son was involved in such a thing. "Is all that true?" James finally asked Jack once they were outside to were Sophia and Luke were playing.

"Yeah", Jack sighed but pointed out, "I met Jerry a little after you guys adopted me and we all know that I was in a bad place".

"Oh, we know. But that still doesn't account for all the years after that", James shot back, trying to understand the situation.

"I tried to leave, but once my life got figure out it was too late because I was already a part of his 'group'", Jack snapped.

"I see that but I just wish you did", James breathed, looking out at the rest of his family.

"Trust me dad, I do too", Jack mumbled as James patted Jack's shoulder and then gave it a squeeze as they walked over to join their family.

Fifty minutes pass as Mr. Flinster went to go find the Brewer family. He looked down a few hallways and even the small cafeteria before finally making his way outside. He stopped at the first step and watched the Brewer family together, laughing and having fun together and he knew right then that he was going to fight even harder to keep this family together at any cost. "Is it time?" Jack asked at the bottom of the steps, breaking him out of his thoughts.

"Yeah, the door just opened", he replied.

Jack nodded and turned around to share with his family as the four said their goodbyes to Luke and Sophia once again and then made their way back inside. Ten minutes passed as the bailiff reenters the room and says, "All rise for Judge Baker. Court is back in session".

Judge Baker retook his seat and stared between Mr. Flinster and Mr. Penton as new information was just brought to his attention. "Councilmen, please approach the bench", Judge Baker said as the two attorney's shared a look but followed the request. "It's been brought to my attention that this case is split into two separate cases with another judge taking over the other. I have talked it over with her and we have both decided that it would be best for everyone if we all talk this through before we continue on. So, I've contacted the other attorney's on the other case and we are meeting in my chambers in one hour", Judge Baker finished as he got up from his chair, not wanting to discuss the matter any further.

"Wait…What?" both Mr. Flinster and Mr. Penton yelled, confused at what just happened.

And there you go folks. Sorry for the ending but please let me know what you think.

Please, let's try and reach between 445-450 before the next chapter.

Thanks and until next time,
