Maura's Birthday

Jane's POV

"Kris, answer your damn phone," I mumbled as I glanced down at my watch with my phone at my ear. Today was Maura's birthday and I placed Kris in charge of making sure everything was set at the house before I came over with Maura.

I went so far as covering Kris so she could go bake with Ma even though I told Ma that I could do it with her. However, she preferred to have Kris who would not argue with her.

"Come on, Kris…"

"Kris Marx's phone, this is her grandmother answering," I heard Ma answer.

"Ma, where's Kris?"

"Oh Janie, Kris and I are still baking over here. You need to delay a bit longer."

I glanced over my shoulder toward Maura's office. "I'm delaying as best as I can but I don't know how many times she can go over toxicology reports," I hissed.

I heard Ma huffed, "Jane Clementine Rizzoli, figure something out because I don't see you doing this baking!"

I rolled my eyes, "I volunteered but you told me that I'm not the best baker and took Kris. She's lucky that she can bake cookies."

"I heard that," Kris shouted from a distance. There was a couple mumbles exchanged until I heard, "It was one time! I almost burned the kitchen one time! I can cook."

"Sure, we'll go with that."

"Not cool, Ma."

"You can cook, not bake." I rubbed the back of my neck then asked, "Is the house all set?"

"Um…well. Sort of?"

"Sort of," I squeaked. I glanced toward Maura's office, seeing her still focus on the papers on her desk. I turned my body away slightly and questioned, "Kris, you and Ma left three hours ago. What did you do with those three hours? You just needed to buy a couple of things, bake a cake and decorate."

Suddenly, I heard Kris let out a small nervous chuckle.

I hated when she did that because it meant that something between then and now. "Kris," I said in a low tone, "what happened?"

"Ma, I'm working as fast as I can. I'm not a miracle worker and there's nothing wrong," Kris replied.

"When you say nothing it means something." I heard a loud beep and heard Kris cuss quietly. I winced at the sound and asked, "What was that?"

"Wait…what Nonna? You need me?"

"Krislyn Gabriel Leo…"

"See you later, Ma!"

"Kris!"

But it was too late. I huffed, placing my phone back into its holder. "Jane," I turned to see Maura standing at the doorway with a small smirk. "Is there something wrong?"

"What? No…psh…" I assured uneasily.

"It sounded like you had an interesting conversation with someone."

I shook my head. "It was just Ma telling me that she's cooking dinner and Kris's helping," I informed her. Maura's smirk shifted quickly with her hazel eyes widening with a worried expression. "Don't worry if Ma and her are cooking that means that we will have a okay kitchen."

"I hope." She walked back into her office and I followed closely behind. I took a seat in the uncomfortable sofa while Maura returned to her desk. "Jane, I have a question for you," she told me.

"And I have an answer."

Maura rolled her eyes but asked, "What are you and Kris planning?"

My eyes widened, feeling my pulse racing. She's catching on! Think of something, I told myself. "What do you mean," I questioned.

Maura's face scrunched up a bit then she shook her head. "Never mind, I'm overanalyzing things," she informed me.

I gave a small playful smile. "Well, don't right now," I told her as I stood up from my spot. I took her hand into mine, pulling her from around her desk. "Come on, let's have some fun. It's your birthday."

Maura gave a surprised expression and I gave a small smile. "You thought Kris and I forgot," I asked her.

"Well, we've been busy lately with the cases and Liam and Aly. It's been kind of hard to remember certain dates and-"

I cut her off, kissing her lips gently. I pulled back, pressing my forehead against hers, as I spoke to her, "I could never forget my wife's birthday. I'm sorry if you thought that and you are right we've been busy but I would not forget this day."

Maura smiled then kissed my chin. "So what's the plan," she inquired.

"I'm thinking lunch, take a walk, and… maybe go to that museum you've been itching to go to?"

Maura's hazel eyes brightened at this comment. "You mean that Antiquities from India that just arrived! Oh Jane, how did you know that I wanted to go?"

I gave a playful roll of my eyes. "I'm a detective as well as your wife," I answered confidently.

"Of course," Maura giggled.

I hope Ma and Kris are ready by the time we get back home.

"We are on crunch time!"

"Nonna, I don't think we should panic yet."

"I told you to cook it for twenty minutes at 350 degrees!"

"You told me 375!"

"Oh my goodness. I'm going to clean this up."

"Um…ok. So, I do what now?"

"Think of a plan B! How can you mix up cake baking degrees? I should have listened to Janie and Maura about you and baking"

"It was only once!"

Maura's POV

"Thank you so much, Jane. I know going to the museum isn't your favorite," I said to her as we stepped toward the front door.

"Maura, I don't mind the weird looking statues especially when I got a beautiful tour guide like yourself." I blushed at the comment while Jane winked at me playfully. I pulled out the keys to the house and began to unlock the front door until Jane's phone began to ring suddenly causing me to frown. Suddenly, I felt my phone ring quickly causing me to glance down and answered, "Isles?"

"Doctor Isles, you need to come back to the lab," Susie informed me over the phone.

"Susie, can it be handle for tomorrow?"

"I'm sorry, Doctor Isles. It needs to be handled right now. It's quite urgent."

I sighed and glanced over to see Jane pressing her lips together in a small frown. "Are you sure," she inquired to the person on the phone. She looked up at me and mouthed 'work,' giving an apologetic look in her eyes.

"Doctor Isles?"

I huffed and answered, "I'll be there soon." I hung up and I looked over at Jane, asking her, "Do you need to drive back to Headquarters?"

Jane nodded and gave an apologetic look. "I'm sorry, Maur. Cavanaugh said that there was some mess with all the paperwork that even Korsak, Frost, Frankie and Kris are all back at the bullpen doing damage control," Jane informed me.

"It seems there's an issue also at the morgue."

Jane gave a soft expression, kissing the top of my head. "I'm sorry, Maura," she apologized against my ear.

I gave her a small forced smile, knowing that my birthday didn't go as planned. "It's okay, Jane," I reassured her as I leaned up and kissed her chin.

R&I

We entered BPD and approached the elevators. "How about I escort you down to the morgue," Jane suggested.

"Don't you need to go up to the bullpen?"

"They can wait."

I bit my lower lip while Jane entered the elevator with me. She then pulled out her phone briefly and said, "I'm just going to send a quick text to Korsak to let him know that I'll be up there soon."

I nodded and soon, the elevator reached the morgue. We both stepped off and I decided to approach my office. "Thank you for accompanying me, Jane," I told her.

Jane smiled, kissing the side of my head. "It's no problem, Maur," she informed me. She then stepped back, "I better go see what's wrong with this paperwork."

"See you in a bit."

"Of course."

As Jane walked off, I unlocked my office and entered. I placed my purse on my desk then I looked up to see the lights in the autopsy room were on. "I thought I turned those off before I left for the evening," I said to myself.

I approached the door and pushed it opened.

"SURPRISE," I jumped and gasped in surprise, with my hands up in surprise, at the sight of Korsak, Frost, Susie, Jane, Angela, Gabriella and Kris standing together. "Happy Birthday Maura," they all said together with wide smiles.

I looked around the autopsy room, taking note of the party decorations. I then noticed that on the autopsy table by Angela was a beautifully decorated cake that said, "Happy birthday Maura."

Jane and Kris soon walked toward me with Liam in Jane's arms and Aly in Kris' arms. "Look at Mommy, you two. She looks very surprised," Jane commented to Liam and Aly who giggled. I took Aly from Kris' arms and kissed their cheeks while Jane asked softly, "You like it?"

"How…I mean, I thought…"

"We made her speechless," Kris chuckled.

I shook my head and asked softly, "How did you do all of this?"

Jane looked over at Kris who smiled sheepishly. "Well, overall, we've been trying to plan this out for a bit. So we decided to reroute you around the area," Kris explained.

"We had an incident in the kitchen," Angela added.

Jane raised an eyebrow and I bit my lower lip. "How bad," I asked Kris.

Kris gave an awkward smile. "Let's just safely assume that I plan on cleaning it as soon as I get home." I gave a curious expression and she sighed, "I might have burned the first cake."

"Might? She did. You're right, Janie, she needs work on her baking," Angela added.

Kris rolled her eyes and I laughed at the gesture then I realized something. "So there's no emergency," I inquired.

"None. After the incident in the kitchen, Nonna told me to think up a plan B and I decided that we could still cook the cake at Gabriella's. However, we would just relocate the party here."

"I'm sorry about lying, Doctor Isles," Susie apologized. "This was the only way I thought about in means of you coming down."

I smiled at Susie. "It's okay, Susie. I understand completely," I assured her.

"Ma called me to drive you back here so I made the excuse that there was a mix up," Jane added.

"That text message in the elevator…"

"I texted Korsak to let him know that we were on our way down." I could feel the tears forming in my eyes, sliding gently. Everyone's smile dropped slightly as Jane moved closer, "Hey, what's wrong?"

"It's nothing, Jane. These are happy tears," I sniffed. Kris handed a small tissue and I dapped my eyes. "You did this all for me?"

Jane and Kris gave small smiles at each other then looked back at me. "Maura, there's a reason to celebrate," Jane informed me. "This world would not be the same if you weren't in it."

"I never…"

"We know."

Kris pulled out her phone and handed it to me. "Just press play," she informed.

I looked over at them with a curious look and pressed the play button to see Mother and Father appearing on the screen. "Hello Darling," Mother greeted.

"Hi sweetheart," Father greeted.

"We're sorry we're not there for the cake but we'll be over tomorrow to celebrate with the family. But Maura, you are our greatest gift to us and we love you so much."

I felt the tears form more as I tightened my grip on the phone.

"We're so proud of you, honey," Father added.

Mother nodded. "We've always had and I know we've hadn't said it enough but we are so proud of the woman you've become."

"We'll see you soon!"

"We love you," Mother then blew a small kiss and Father gave a small wave.

I felt my throat constrict then I noticed Kris move aside slowly, taking Aly and the phone from me causing me to give a curious look. I then noticed that Angela lightened several candles on the cake. Jane placed a hand on the middle of my back, pushing me gently toward the cake before my loved ones surrounded me.

I looked up at everyone then back at the cake. "Thank you for all of this. This is the best surprise I ever had," I told them gratefully.

I glanced over at Jane as she whispered, "Make a wish." I gave her a skeptical look and Jane rolled her eyes, "I know. I know but it's tradition. We'd talked about this before. So…make a wish."

I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath before I opened them and blew out the candles. As everyone cheered, Kris asked curiously, "So what did you wish for?"

I looked at Kris then at the twins before I looked at Jane. She gave a smirk, "Did you wish for world peace or something?" I shook my head and Jane chuckled, "Then what?"

"I didn't make a wish."

"Maura…"

"Because I already have everything I could ever ask for," I explained which caused Jane and Kris to smile widely.
