It seemed stupid. No one would ever be stupid enough to attack the Institute directly. Still orders were orders and so two ruggedly handsome demons walked along the top edge of the primary building's roof - trying their best to curb their boredom.
"Just answer the question," a violet haired, chiseled man asked his friend as he nudged him playfully in the ribs, "How was she?"
Grinning wolfishly, his bronze skinned friend with spiked ebony hair shrugged once before responding snidely, "I mean, she..."
Russet eyes widened and his sentence trailed off as his mouth hung open upon seeing...whatever the hell it was that was hurling towards them.
Out on the expansive city skyline, less than a few miles away, a lancelike ray of blue-white light shot out from the billowing clouds reflecting the pink light of dusk and landing directly in the center of the campus. The ground shook. Demons screamed. Alarms sounded. Armed soldiers swarmed like ants from every door and window in a response time that would've impressed the most seasoned military experts of all time.
For a moment, the burning hot beam merely stayed just that and then, oh and then, there was a blinding flash, like sheet-lightning, and a huge ball of flame belched upward, leaving a series of smoke-rings to float more slowly after it. That fireball flattened, then spread to form the mushroom-head of a column of incandescent gas that mounted to overtake it, engorging the smoke-rings as it rose, twisting, writhing, changing shape, turning to dark smoke in one moment and belching flame and crackling with lightning the next. Those unfortunate enough to have reached the threat were vaporized instantly in the blast while the rest lay dazed on their backs with various levels of burns covering their bodies.
"My name is Mazoku," a loud booming voice suddenly emanated from amidst the flames - the only indication of a source was two gleaming golden eyes in the smoke, "Too long has the Institute laid waste to our proud races. Humans now walk these lands believing they own them. Taking those territories from proud, strong lines. Yet still we hide in the shadows like vermin. No longer. The time of the Institute has ended. The time demons rule the earth once more begins now."
"Fuck," the violet haired man breathed anxiously as he lay flat on his stomach and watched the display with wide eyes, "Who the hell is that?"
"Mazoku. Weren't you listening?" his ebony hired friend hissed back - never taking his eyes off the impressive looking demon as he emerged from the smoke, "I've never seen anything like him."
"Me either," the violet haired man swallowed thickly before casting a quick look at his comrade, "Should we make a run for it?"

At first no-one moved - their bodies frozen mid-stride as their brains struggled to make sense of the input. The ground shook violently beneath their feet and a noise like extended thunder only worse because the vibrations are coming from below. Then like a switch has been flicked several thousand screams suddenly filled the air, the walls of the city groaned and lights flickered rapidly before going out altogether leaving a frightening darkness in the dwindling light. What could be seen - however - was flames coming from nowhere other than the Institute in the distance.
"HOLY SHIT BALLS BATMAN!" Raiden screamed in a mixture of awe and alarm as he gaped at the giant being towering over the cityscape, "WHO THE HELL IS THAT?!"
Slowly, very slowly, everyone turned to give the young Wolf a withering glare before turning worried gazes onto an uncharacteristically shell shocked Sesshomaru.
"I..." Sesshomaru began slowly as he stared incredulously into the distance before glancing towards the hospital where his brother awaited their side, "I..."
"InuYasha is perfectly capable of kicking someone's ass on his own and he's got Ayame with him," Koga suddenly interrupted in an irritated tone that had everyone turning their attention towards him, "You go. Raiden and I will assist the mutt while the rest of you deal with that fucker. The timings too perfect. He knew you'd be away. Kagome was a distraction."
"Agreed," Shiori spoke up before taking a shaky breath and turning to Koga, "I'll go with you. You'll need someone who can cast sufficient barriers."
Sesshomaru was blinking sluggishly at the sight before him - which in and of itself was the most jarring aspect of this new development. Never had any of them, probably anyone ever, seen the daiyoukai so frazzled.
"They...no one..." Sesshomaru whispered hoarsely after a moment before he awkwardly fumbled with his phone and looked at it in mild horror, "No one has..."
"What the hell are you waiting for?! Go!" Koga barked out exasperatedly at the still stunned daiyoukai before he turned back towards the hospital, "Raiden. Shiori. You're with me."
"Well this escalated quickly," Raiden chuckled nervously before having the good grace to look chagrined when his father sent him a withering glare. Huffing slightly, Raiden rolled his eyes and pointed towards the Godzilla sized figure reeking havoc in the distance, "What? It did!"
Sighingheavily, Koga rolled his eyes and took off at breakneck speed as Sesshomaru immersed himself in a ball of light and took off towards the figure.

'Deep breaths. Deep breaths. Just keep calm. He's... he's... gone... but you still have a piece of him. You have someone to protect,' Kagome thought sternly to herself as she continued focusing on the small barrier surrounding her unborn child, 'As long as you don't struggle they won't do anything more.'
It had been true so far that once she stopped putting up a fight and feigned unconsciousness they hadn't done... well really anything to her. They'd placed a guard in her room and based on the screaming match that had ensured doctored up some paperwork claiming she was batshit crazy. There had been something so familiar about that voice that she couldn't quite place. So...
All at once the whole world began moving up and down with such force that computers and vials crashed to the ground before shattering into a million pieces. Then, oh and then, a blast of energy surged through everything - obviously demonic in nature based on the way it seemed to just flow around the barrier she'd created. Screams filled the hospital as the lights flickered and went out. Opening her eyes and sitting up best she could, she noticed the guard had abandoned her. Slowly and unsteadily, Kagome got onto the ground struggling to keep her balance as they ground continued shaking. She had to get outside. She had to...
And then she saw someone she never thought she'd see again and who she felt slightly chagrined to have forgotten before all such thoughts fled her mind when another massive shift in he earth knocked her to the floor.
"Lady Kagome? How?"
