Chapter 28: Silver and Gold
Cassidy's POV:
Marlene and Lily had stayed over that night because they were both coming to the Potters annual Christmas party. Also because they were helping put our plan into action. James, Lily and Remus are going to sneak into the library while Marlene, Sirius, and I make sure that Chris and Grace don't leave the party and go upstairs to Chris' office.
We spent the morning and afternoon helping Grace decorate the ballroom and front entrance hall for the party. Everything was in shades of silver and gold. The balloons, the streamers, everything in beautiful shades of silver and gold. I added a few reds in as well because what was Christmas without some red?
"Girls," Grace chirped the afternoon of the party. "You better start getting ready. Party starts in a few hours."
"Okay Grace," I smiled. "We were just about to go up."
We did as we were told and went upstairs. I showered last night so Lily was going to use my bathroom and Marlene was using the one down the hall. Once they were done and dried off we began to do our make-up. I gave myself a smokey eye with grays and silvers. I also wore red lipstick with gloss. I maneuvered my hair into a complicated bun. It was messy but elegant at the same time. I entered my closet and closed the door so I could change. I pulled on sparkly sheer tights and a sparkly red and gold dress. It was tight and hugged me in all the right places. I slipped into my heels that were black and had glitter patterns and fabric bows going up my foot to the mouth of the shoe. The bottom of the shoes were red to match the red in my dress as well.
"Wow Cass," Marlene commented. "You clean up pretty nice."
"Stop it," I teased. "You're making me blush."
Once we were all ready we went downstairs to meet with the boys. They were all clean cut and shaven in their black dress robes.
"Well don't you boys clean up nicely," I observed.
"As do you Miss. Clark," James said formally. "As do you." We all cracked up and made our way to the ballroom.
"Everybody remember the plan?" I asked before we went inside. Everyone nodded or called out a yes. "Good, let's have some fun!"
We dance and laughed and had fun for about an hour. Then around 7 o'clock right when Chris was going to make his annual speech we all meet up. We had to make sure that Chris saw us all before Lily, James, and Remus went to find books. After Chris made his speech Sirius went with the other three to make sure they made it upstairs and Marlene and I kept our eyes on Grace and Chris.
"Have any ideas on how to keep them busy," I asked Marlene while casually sipping some punch.
"I have one," she admitted. "But I'm not sure how long it'll hold out."
"Anything will work," I encouraged.
"Okay come with me," she said grabbing my arm and pulling me through the crowd. When we made it to our destination I realized the plan.
"Mrs. Potter," Marlene exclaimed reaching out to hug her. "You look fantastic! Where on earth did you get that dress!?"
I didn't realize one question could set two people off for so long.
"Would you like to dance?"
I turned around and smiled at Sirius. I nodded and took his hand and he led me to the dance floor. We spotted Chris talking to people across the room so we were safe for now.
"Did they make it in," I questioned trying to smile casually.
"Yep Remus is standing guard and James and Lily are looking for books," Sirius smiled back. "I'm surprised Lily and Remus didn't have a heart attack at the amount of books in there."
"How many books," I asked suddenly interested.
"Loads," he said with a wink.
"Damn it," I whined. "Why did I agree to stay here?"
"Because you're good at distracting people," he suggested.
"Am I?" I mused.
"I don't know but let's find out," he said. "Chris is on the move." I turned around and saw him and a co-worker moving towards the doorway.
"Crap," I whispered. "Let's go." I said grabbing Sirius' hand. We beat Chris to the door and we stood by the grand stair case in the foyer waiting for Chris and his friend to show up.
"It should be in my private library Derek," I heard him say. "It's just up these stairs and down the hall a bit."
"You got a plan," Sirius whispered.
"Not a good one," I whispered back. "Did you see where Lily and James went? Or Remus as a matter of fact?" I asked a little louder this time. His eyes widened and I gave him a look as if to say play along.
"Cassidy? Sirius?" Chris called out. "What are you guys doing out here?"
"Chris," I chimed smiling. "Hi, we were just looking for Lily and James. And Remus too actually he went to look for them but never came back."
"Well I'm sure you'll find them," he assured us. "Kids this is my friend from work Derek Carmichael. Derek these are James friends Cassidy and Sirius. Although they're pretty much my kids too." He said the laugh part with a slight laugh and we laughed as well.
"Nice to meet you Mr. Carmichael," I said. "We should probably go look for our friends. Come on Sirius." I said pulling his hand with me up the stairs. He gave me a strange smile and I gave him one right back our eyes speaking for us.
"Oh we're right behind you," Chris said. "I'm just grabbing something from my office."
My eyes widened in fear at Sirius unsure of what to do next. He came close to my ear and whispered something. I rolled my eyes but nodded. Once I reached the top step I cried out in pain and reached down to clutch my ankle.
"Ouch!" I cried. "That bloody hurt!"
"Cassidy? Are you ok," Remus' voice called out from down the hall.
"Remus," I chimed. "There you are! I'm fine, these bloody heels are just an accident waiting to happen."
"Do you need me to look at it Cassi?" Chris asked looking at my foot.
"I'm fine," I said brushing it off. "Let's just finish looking for James and Lily." I said the last part a bit louder in case they could hear me and figure out an escape plan.
"I've looked everywhere," Remus called after me. "Can't find them."
"Well good luck with your search kids," Chris said stopping in front of his office. "I'm sure they'll show up. In here Derek." He muttered some spells to unlock the door and the three of us just stood in horror as he opened the door and went inside.
"What the bloody hell!" we heard him yell out not even a moment later. We all froze in horror as James cried out as well.
"Dad," he croaked. "We were just-."
"Snogging in my office!" Chris exclaimed. My eyes widened and I tried not to laugh. I could hear Remus and Sirius trying to suppress the urge as well.
"Found them," Sirius whispered in my ear. I let loose a short laugh but covered my mouth afterwards,
"I'm just going to go," Lily said faintly. I heard the clacking of her heels and she ran out of the room. Her face was red and her hair was disheveled. She was clutching her bag so much her knuckles were white. When she spotted me she grabbed my wrist and dragged me down the hall and stairs.
"Did you guys even look for books," I asked a bit harshly. "Or were you using this as Lily and James time?"
"A little bit of both," she squeaked. She opened her bag and pulled out two very small books.
"What the bloody hell are those," I questioned.
"Your books," she answered. I smiled and gave her a quick hug. I left her outside the ballroom and I went in to grab Marlene. She was still talking to Grace about clothes and what not.
"Is it okay if I take her from you?" I asked sweetly. "Lily and I were just heading back upstairs. We're beat for the night."
"Of course," Grace chirped. "I hope you girls had a good night. I'll be up to check on you later."
"Okay," I smiled. "Good night." I grabbed Marlene's wrist and dragged her out of the room. We met Lily and we all headed to the living room and went up the stairs to my room. Once we were safely in my room Lily took out the small books and enlarged them once more.
"Brilliant," I whispered. "Let's get looking." But then there was a knock on the door. I lunged for my bag on the floor and stuff the books inside.
"Who is it," I called clearly. The boys opened the door and entered closing the door with a soft 'thud' behind them.
"Got the books," Sirius asked. I nodded and pointed to my bag on the armchair.
"Well what are we waiting for," he asked again. "Let's crack them open." I sighed and grabbed the bag off the chair and pulled the potions book out.
"I can wait on the Carlisle information," I told them. "I need this potion information now. Or else they are going to kill my brother." They all nodded in agreement and we began to look. We each took turns looking through the book.
"Do we even know what we're looking for?" James finally asked after we had gone through a quarter of the book and we'd almost given up. I groaned and threw my head back.
"I'll take that as a no," he said quietly. I closed the book and put it back in my bag and said goodnight to the boys. They left and we began to get ready for bed. Marlene and Lily went in the bathroom first to take off their make-up and takeout their hair while I waited on my bed. I sat at my desk looking at the potions book once more not really sure what to look for.
"Girls," Grace called from the hallway. "You in there?" I panicked and closed the book and threw it in the closet. I grabbed my robe off of the hook by the bathroom and pulled it on. I ripped my hair out of its bun and threw it into a messier one on top of my head.
"Yeah," I called out. I closed the bathroom door and told them to be quiet. I then closed the closet too just in case.
"Can I come in?" she called again.
"Yup," I shouted. I quickly grabbed a book off the shelf and hopped on my bed and opened the book to a random page.
"Your still not changed?" she asked her brows furrowed.
"Well Lily was showering and then Marlene just finished so I was waiting my turn," I explained. "Lily's changing in the closet and Marlene is finishing in the bathroom."
"Okay," she said. "Well good night girls." She called into the room. "Night Cass, love you."
"Love you too," I smiled closing the door behind her. "You guys can come out now." The two came out and started to laugh at me. I growled and pushed passed them and slammed the door. I stripped off my dress, knickers, and bra then stepped under the hot water.
I pulled my hair out of its bun and my curls cascaded down my back. I washed my hair and body and the make-up off my face. I stepped out and dried off changing into the pajamas I had brought in with me. I quickly braided my hair and went back out and said good night to my friends before sliding under the covers of my bed and quickly falling asleep.
Knock. Knock.
My eyes begin to flutter open.
Knock. Knock.
I sit up and look at the clock. The flashing red digits told me it was 3:37am.
'Seriously,' I thought to myself. 'Who in their right mind…?'
I got up and slipped into my slippers and pulled on my robe. I tip-toed over to the door and quietly pulled it open to find Sirius standing with a sheepish grin.
"Are you for real," I hissed at him. "It is three o'clock in the morning!"
"Sorry," he whispered. "I couldn't sleep, I was sorta hoping you couldn't either. I'll just go back to bed. Sorry." He started walking down the hall but I stopped him.
"Wait," I said. "Let's go downstairs." He smiled and headed in the direction of the stairs. I closed my door softly and followed him. He led me into the living room and he sat down on the couch I sat down next to him and snuggled into the warm couch. I grabbed a blanket on the back and wrapped it around my body.
"Why couldn't you sleep," I finally asked after we both got comfortable.
"Lots of stuff rattling around in my head I guess," he said with a shrug.
"Like what," I pried.
"Your brother, Wormtail, Ellie," After a few seconds he spoke again. "You."
"Me?" I asked in surprise. He nodded silently. "Why me?" I questioned him.
"Isn't it obvious Cassidy," he snorted. "I'm worried about you."
"Why would you be worried about me," I teased.
He rolled his eyes and laughed. "Because you're one of my best friends and I…"
"And you…?" I wondered.
"I love you," he said bluntly. "I know you already know that and I know you don't want to be with me yet but… I think about you because I love you and I'm worried."
We were both quiet for a while before I replied.
"I love you too Sirius," I admitted. "I'll be ready soon, I promise."
"Pinky promise," he smiled holding out his pinky.
"Pinky promise."
