Chapter 28

When your name is finally drawn
I'll be happy that you're gone

Sam felt close to a panic attack. Just a few seconds prior it had looked like Lucifer would finally give in and stumble down the pit like he should. But then he pulled on his brother's feathered wings, badly hurting them, probably tearing several wounds –apparently, he couldn't see them- and they both shot towards where gravity took them, which was, at this very moment, the deepest pits of hell.

"NO! DEAN!" he shouted and was finally able to shake Abby off, who had tried to hold him back. It wasn't like he wanted to get rid of her and he knew she needed the support after that stunt she pulled but…god, he couldn't lose his brother! If he only had a rope or something, anything to stop this! He felt his feet flying over the burned grass, felt the pull get stronger as he reached the pit. He was jumping towards his brother before he knew it but felt the pull drag on him too. He would grab Lucifer and push Dean out of the way, he could do it-

That's when the 'Freeze!' rang through the air. It was as if the voice came from every direction at once but the other's gazes quickly made Sam realize that in fact, it had been Jesse. The boy had arrived just on time, on the other side of the pit. Sam didn't know if he teleported himself or not but he sure was able to do so, at least if his grand disappearance back when they first tried to capture him was anything to go on.

Just when Jesse spoke the word, everything seemed to slow down, freeze, as he said. But his hand had been pointed at Michael and Sam…and not at Lucifer.

And like everything had slowed down just a few seconds ago, now time seemed to want to compensate for it. Suddenly, Michael unfroze, the hole closed and Dean crashed into the ground –which was now back to its solid state below him. Sam crashed into it just a second later, staring at the impossible. The pit had completely vanished, leaving just the four rings lying in the grass, untouched.

And Lucifer was gone.

Sam breathed in a heavy breath, not realizing he'd been holding his. Abby arrived at his side. First she had come to get him from falling into the pit, now her hand slipped in his for reassurance, then hugging him quickly just to make sure he was still there and this was real. Because she too couldn't quite believe if this was a dream or a reality. She helped him up from the ground, then stared at Michael in worry, not quite sure if to approach or not. And he was so still…

Heaving in air heavily, Michael!Dean sat up. He whirled around, green eyes incredibly wide, and stared at Jesse.

"You did it!" and suddenly, he was laughing. "Oh by father we did it!" All the tension left his body and he was not the only one. As the oldest Archangel fell back into the now returned –but still burned- grass, laughing his heart out in joy, they could see the sky above them clearing from the black clouds that had previously occupied it. Even though the grass was burned around them, it was still there and Sam was sure it would grow back.

The grin slowly spread across his own face as well and he looked at Abby, then at Dean and as the archangel slowly sat up, still a stupid grin on his face, he was suddenly tackled by his little brother. Sam closed his arms around his big brother tightly, enjoying the intense warmth coming from him and just enjoying that he was alive, that they were both alive. No pit that dragged his brother to hell again, only this time so much deeper.

"That was too close, Dean." He whispered, let go and punched his brother in the shoulder, half in a teasing gesture, half to actually scold him for stupidity. To his surprise, Dean actually winced.

"Hey! Careful, this body is worn down." He protested, suddenly holding his middle. Blood fled from Sam's face as he saw the wound. There was grace leaking out and maybe blood too, it was hard to look at it. Just glancing in the general direction hurt and he scolded himself now from completely forgetting about that.

"Oh god, Dean!" he almost screamed it out and lunged forward, wanting to touch his hand to it to stop the bleeding. But a hand on his shoulder held him back. He whirled around, seeing Gabriel there, who had a smile on his face.

"I wouldn't touch that, if you touch grace you'd get pulverized and I bet we don't want that to happen, especially now." But even Gabriel couldn't hold back the grin on his face from spreading. He leaned down, also embracing Michael but being much gentler about it.

"We have to get you patched up, Mike." He drew his finger over the wound, at least subsiding the glowing white light enough so it didn't blind the non-angels around. The wound was far from healed but it was now at least save to be around without losing your eyesight. Michael seemed to possess all of Dean's stubbornness though and he tried to wave Gabriel away.

"I'll be fine. Believe me, the only thing that can kill me is down in that pit now."

"Are you sure?" the unexpected voice interrupted them and for a short second, Sam had a small panic attack, thinking Lucifer wasn't down the pit after all. But it was just Jesse, having stepped closer to their little group. Michael laughed, throwing his head back, mouth wide open.

"Ha! You're right. If you turned against me right now I might be in trouble." He leveled his head again and lifted a calculating eyebrow at the child standing not too far away from him, hands in the pockets of his jeans as if being here was just another occurrence that could have happened any day on his way to school.

"So, Anti-Christ. Will you?" he sounded serious, maybe a little concerned even. Sam mused what would happen if Jesse actually did turn against them right now…he'd never really grasped how powerful the kid was. How he just froze Michael in midair just now with his pure will…it was scary to think about. Jesse sure didn't show any emotion on his face, staring deep into Dean's eyes for a few seconds. Then, a smile broke out.

"Nah. I just wanted my parents to be save, you know that. I can return to them now, right?" he asked, head tilted lightly in question.

"Of course you may. I can't thank you enough for what you did, Jesse." He bowed his head as much as he could, sitting down. There was a short pause where Jesse just nodded at him like he was saying how it wasn't a problem and in which Michael shook his head, symbolizing that it was maybe a topic for another time.

"What will happen to the house on the beach?" Michael asked, drawing confused glances from everybody around. They were all gathered around Michael now, Abby directly behind Sam, Adam and Bobby next to her. Castiel was staying a little off to the right but he looked like he was holding in to not hug his brother as well.

"Maybe I'll take my parents there…by plane this time." Jesse answered, smiling calmly as if he was looking forward to that with all his heart. How could this child be the Anti-Christ? Suddenly, Cas stepped forward. He had looked torn for the time being, by now he was still hesitant but apparently sure enough to say something. He stepped forward in Jesse's direction. Suspicion rose in Jesse's eyes. After all, Cas had once tried to stab him. Sam was sure the child wouldn't forget that incident for quite some time, even if he simply turned Castiel into a toy.

"I wanted to say sorry, Jesse. You know, for…assuming you would take on the role destined for you." Castiel coughed as if trying to find words in the short pause following. "I have learned that humans have a way of surprising you sometimes." He glanced over at the two Winchester brothers, smiling a small smile, a short glance even falling on Abby, who smiled right back, squeezing Sam's shoulder slightly.

"I guess I can't really blame you either, Castiel. After all, you were just doing what you thought was right, to protect the ones who were important to you." Jesse inclined his head a little in Castiel's general direction. How unexpected, such wise words for such a small human. Cas bowed right back, Jesse waved one more time in the direction of their group, then turned around and walked away. When Sam blinked, the kid was gone.

"That boy…he saved the world and just walks away." Bobby commented, his voice not really giving away what his thoughts on the matter were. Sam nodded in response and Michael smiled.

"Well, to be precise, I saved the world. He just saved me from joining my brother's fate. Which would not have been fatal but...certainly unpleasant for me." Dean's index finger was lifted and he soon pointed it at himself. Sam pursed his lips, glaring at his brother pointedly.

"I'm sure there were more reasons against you falling into that pit other than it being 'unpleasant' for you personally." At that, Dean just rolled his eyes. Sam was about to protest again and fall into a rant about how Dean could dare to take that risk at all, when Gabriel interrupted them. He had leaned down to pick something up off the ground, frowning at it.

"What are we going to do with these?" he questioned, holding up the four rings of the horsemen. His question was met with several astonished glances and some of them flew to Michael, who seemed deep in thought about it.

"Mh, good question, Gab. Unfortunately, the rings themselves can't be destroyed. But keeping them apart and impossible to put together again should be enough to keep anybody from using them. Bobby, Adam." He turned to the two hunters standing at his right side, glancing down on him.

"Yeah?" Bobby asked, not quite sure what to expect.

"I want you to give out these rings to any hunters you choose individually so that only you know who has them. They should each make up the best hiding place they could find and bury their existence as best they can." Michael decided. Gabriel stared at him, Cas as well. Sam was simply stunned, not able to say anything.

"You want that responsibility to fall on the humans?" Castiel asked, bewildered. He didn't sound appalled, just shocked.

"Yes, I do. If the angels take this power upon them it will be common knowledge amongst all angels where the rings are hidden. It could mean a newfound target on us and a newfound source for spite and other petty things. What we need is time to rebuild. Many angels died, I felt their deaths. We need a new stability and our work with the hunters should lead us on a better path. And I believe giving them the rings is one of those things that should be done to set that bond in stone." As he neared the end of his speech, he had tried to stand up. Gabriel and Sam were quick to be by his side, keeping him from stumbling forwards. He was still weak, even if he didn't want to admit it. Probably, the wound in his wings added to his imbalance. Sam had heard somewhere that the angel's wings were extremely tightly bound with the state of their grace so maybe the missing feathers and the wound there were hurting Michael more than the actual stabbing in his stomach.

"But first, I think we all need some rest." Michael concluded, holding his stomach and wincing. They all nodded and Bobby grinned.

"How about we all go and take a look if my house is still standing?"

Sooooooo! Not last chapter, there's one more (plus eventually an epilogue if you want), but I think this already wraps up very much. Lucifer's gone and the world was saved! But is it really that easy? ;P

Please leave a comment, would love to know what you think on my choice of narration here ^^

PLEASE REVIEW :3 (even if just a little bit)
