Chapter 28

House limped back and forth. He was in the waiting room. Lisa was back in surgery. He looked at Sam, who was sitting in one of the chairs. Her head was ontop of her knees, which were brought up on the chair. She was quiet. But he could tell that she was upset. And worried. He was too. He kept looking at the doors. He had a knot in the pit of his stomach. He always did when one of his kids was in the hospital. Lisa's stomach hadn't gotten better, which meant that she was going to have to surgery to find out why. They thought they had missed something when they did the initial surgery. House sighed and forged the urge to choke the surgeon. He frowned and he kept limping. He looked at his oldest daughter. She hated this as much as he did. He limped over to her chair and he sat next to her. He placed a hand on her shoulder. A gesture that surprised a nurse who was passing by.

Neither House nor Sam paid her any attention. They didn't look up until they heard footsteps coming in their direction. It was the surgeon. The same one from when Sam was brought in when she was attacked. House got to his feet. He looked at the other doctor right in the eye. Sam looked up, she could feel her heart beating fast in her chest. She was nervous. Her arms were wrapped tightly around her knees tight. She held her breath.

"Well?" House asked matter of factly. "How is my Daughter?"

The other doctor sighed and he brought his mask down. Sam looked at him, but she said nothing. He took a long breath. House glared at him. His hand shook and his cane did as well. He hated waiting. Not knowing, it bothered him.

The surgeon looked at them. "The intial surgeon made a mistake during Lisa's surgery. He left part of a sponge in her stomach."

"How is she NOW," House gritted.

"She's in recovery, She's going to be alright. We got everything this time."

House sighed in relief. He limped past the other doctor and he headed into recovery. Sam followed him, getting up from the chair and walking with him.

When they got to the room, Lisa was still asleep. She had tubes in her arms and one in her throat. House sighed and he sat next to her. He put his foot out in front of him. Sam sat on the other side of her sister's bed. She couldn't look at her. It hurt too much. She blinked and she got off of the bed. She made her way into the bathroom which was in the hallway. She ducked inside and she started to cry. House watched as she walked off. He was upset as well and he took a deep breath. Tears started to sting at his eyes.

He wiped his eyes and he took another breath. The sound of Lisa's heart monitor beeping as a reminder that she was still alive. House took out his bottle of Vicodin and he popped the top off. He tapped the bottle and a few pills spilled into his hand. He swallowed them in one gulp, closing the bottle and stuffing it back into her pocket. He took out his phone and he dialed a number. Outside, a nurse looked at him.

"You can't have your phone on, House," she said. House glared at her. He put the phone to his ear as it started to ring.

"I need you here," He said to the voice on the other end. "She's out of surgery and is in recovery, but.." his voice broke alittle. "I need you here." He ended the phone call and put the phone back into his pocket. He frowned.

About an hour later, Sam came out of the bathroom. Her eyes were puffy from crying. She wiped her eyes on her sleeve and made her way back to the room. House was watching television. A soap opera by the looks of it. He looked at her as she entered. He just nodded. No words needed to be said. She walked over to Lisa's bed and she sighed. House made a gesture for her to come over by him and she did so. He got up and he hugged her. The year had been hard for all of them. They had enough of hospitals to last them a few lifetimes.

They both turned and looked at the youngest member of the House family when they heard her wake up. House looked at her. He limped over to her, holding onto the railing. He took her hand in his. He leaned down and he kissed her forehead.

She blinked at them. She felt like crying. Her little eyes filled with tears.
