Chapter Twenty-Eight

"Well, good work!" Jack praised them after they informed him of their victory. "I'm proud of you two! That case was complex and emotionally charged. Nice job!"
Connie expressed her gratitude with a smile.
"Thanks, Jack," Mike said sincerely. "But watch, the media's gonna make us out to be heartless," he added flatly.
"Well—what's popular isn't always right, and what's right isn't always popular," Jack said. "You two did what was right. Aaron Sanders got a fair trial and was convicted by a jury of his peers. Nothing the media says is going to change that."
"That's true," Connie agreed good-naturedly, giving Mike a reassuring smile.
"Well—this puts the Hobart case at the top of the pile," said Jack. "I'm going to need an update ASAP. I've already got reporters calling me, asking for a statement about it."
"No problem," said Mike.
"We've got your back," Connie said with another smile.
"But be sure to go have a drink to celebrate," Jack added with a smile. "That's important, too."
"Oh, we are!" said Connie.
"That's great!" said Jack.
"But you both know you can expect Randolph to file for an appeal, right?"
"I'll be surprised if he doesn't," said Mike.
"Well, if and when he does—we'll deal with it," Connie said reassuringly to him and Jack.
"That we will," Jack said good-naturedly. "You two have a good evening—and again, great work and congratulations!"
"Thanks, Jack," said Mike.
"Thank you, Jack," said Connie.
After saying 'goodbye' to Jack and walking past his office—
"You always have a positive outlook on things," Mike complimented her.
Connie smiled.
"Meh—it's how I roll," she joked, flirting with him.
Mike smiled, and when the two of them reached the elevator, he stood back chivalrously so she could get on first.
