"Really? An 'n'? Arceus, um..." Gary ran a hand through his hair while Leaf stared expectantly at him. Here they were, Leaf and Gary, following the route back to Saffron City, playing First Letter-Last Letter. After a few days for Gary and Fire to earn their own gym badges, some trainers looking wary as Leaf walked through the doors. Ignoring this, Leaf watched as Gary won his badge flawlessly and Fire by the skin of his teeth.
Both Dayna and Fire decided to stay behind to look further into the Safari, whereas Gary and Leaf wanted to get to the next city as soon as possible. With some goodbyes and sincere apologies to Fire and Dayna, both left with promises to keep in touch via pokégear.
Initially, there first few moments of traveling together had been extremely awkward. So awkward, that Gary literally tried making small talk about the pleasant weather, in which Leaf responded with 'it's nice'. After the suggestion of playing First Letter-Last Letter, though, things got more comfortable, laughing about mispronunciations of pokémon names and stuttering over finding the next answer. They must've gone through at least a fourth of the pokédex, Gary now stuck with finding a pokémons who name starts with 'N'.
"Ninjask!" Gary said triumphantly, knowing that K was a rather hard letter.
"Kabuto." Leaf answered cooly and calmly, smirking.
"Damnit." Gary muttered under his breath. "Octillery."
"Yanmega."
"Anorith."
"Happiny." Leaf answered as Gary once again cursed. Leaf smirked. "What is it, Mr. Hot-Shot? Can't think of a pokémon whose name starts with a Y?"
"Can I pass?"
"Then you loose." Leaf said with a shrug.
"Why don't you tell me some pokémon whose names start with 'Y'!" exclaimed Gary, pointing in her face, challenging her.
"Yanma," Leaf answered. "Yamask." Gary blinked, then groaned.
"Fine, you win this round, Leaf Green." Gary grumbled. Leaf rolled her eyes as the entered through the gate to Saffron City. As they entered onto the other side, they were greeted with complete screams and riots. Literally, the people of the city were running around as pokémon attacked them overhead.
"Get in your houses or get out of the way!" someone shouted through a megaphone. Gary and Leaf stood dumbfounded for a moment, watching the chaos while Rocket grunts rushed past. Then it kicked in that this city was being taken over, and they brought out their pokémon.
"Pidgeot!" Leaf exclaimed, bringing out her pokémon, the wing once injured now completely healed. "Time for an air battle!"
"Back her up, Ferrow!" Gary exclaimed.
"I'm going to trust they can handle themselves." Leaf said positively to Gary before turning back to the two birds in the air. "Meet us back at the Silph Company, in the middle of the city!" she grabbed another pokéball and tossed it in the air. "Slowking, Protect!" she said, pointing to a family cowering under a Nidoking. "Use telekinesis!" Slowkings eyes flashed green, and then the Nidoking was thrown into the air and slammed into the ground, falling unconscious from the surprise attack.
"Seems we're always getting ourselves in trouble, huh? I'm starting to wonder," Gary mused jokingly. "If trouble finds us more than we find it!"
"I should've tried to take out these grunts while I was here. I ran like a coward." Leaf growled, returning her Slowking and letting out her Pikachu, who promptly powered up it's signature Electro Ball attack. It hit the leader of a horde of Golbats, it's followers quickly defending its fallen leader. "Discharge!" she exclaimed, knocking them all out in one full swoop.
Suddenly, there was a flash on one of the jumbo screens hanging from a building, and there was the very boss of Team Rocket, smirking down at them.
"Leaf Green and Gary Oak." his voice rang out. "You have interfered with us long enough, and now," the camera turned to what looked like two separate rooms, showing from two separate cameras. In one room was an unconscious Dayna, laying on her side, bruised and ponytail out and flowing, hair matted with blood from a horrid gash on the side of her head. In the second was Fire, who had one eye opened, the other swollen shut. It was obvious he had taken the brunt of whatever attack they two had faced. Cuts lined his arms, clothing ripped and torn, his shirt soaked with blood as he held his hand over a horrible gash that was loosing more blood with each second. "Your friends paid the price."
Leafs hands flew to her mouth, looking at her two childhood friends beaten down so easily. The camera switched back to Giovanni.
"In one second, I could kill them, but I am feeling oddly generous and kind today. Here is my proposal: Battle and beat me, then I will not only release your friends, I will also retreat my forces from Saffron City. Loose, and your friends will be electrocuted, dying almost immediately." he smirked. "I am at the top of the Silph Company, currently, ah, persuading the president to hand over his newest creation, the Master Ball. You have one hour. If one or both of you fail to show up, Fire Red and Dayna Yellow die. Good day." the screen flickered for a moment, and then went back to the commercials flashing for tourists to buy newest products built by Silph Company. A silence seemed to fall over the city, and then the chaos began again.
"Gary," Leaf swallowed, turning to look at him. "It seems that, not only do we run into trouble, but we also bring trouble upon others."
"We'll be fine." Gary said.
"But Fire and Dayna aren't mediocre trainers! Look what happened to them. It's like- It's like what they did to my Dad! And we don't know if their pokémon are alive or dead!"
"Leaf," Gary said, placing both hands on her shoulders, a strong grip with a heavy gaze. "Do. Not. Panic. Not only does it not help our situation, it wastes our time limit that he gave us. Think logically, okay? First, we need to call back Pidgeot and Ferrow. Then we need to get to a pokémon center and pokémart to stock up on supplies. Understand?" Leaf looked into his eyes for a moment, let out a long sigh, and nodded.
"Let's do this, Gary."

"Perhaps they don't actually care?" Giovanni mused to himself as he stared at he clock on the wall. He sat in the presidents desk while the actual president was guarded by his grunts. "Tell me, Mr. President," he turned, his cool gaze settling on the older man, who flinched under the pressure of his eyes. Ah, fear. Something in which Giovanni thrived off of. "Wouldn't it be interesting to see Dayna Yellow die by your Electirizer and Fire Red die by your Magmarizer?"
"Th-They're children!" exclaimed the president. "They've done nothing, why would you want to kill them?"
"Because their acquaintances got in my way." Giovanni answered, turning back towards the clock. Only two minutes. Impatiently, he began to tap his fingers on the oak desk, inching towards the button that would immediately release the pent up electricity in the Electirizers. He smirked as the two minutes went down to one.
"Giovanni!" a door slammed open, and he smirked.
"So you finally made it. You almost ran out of time." he turned towards the two teenagers that stood there. "Seems almost... lucky, hm? Lucky you escaped us each time, lucky you got out of death, lucky that by the mere thirty seconds before the time ran out, you made it."
"It's not luck that brought us so far!" Leaf exclaimed angrily, letting out her Venusuar. "Release my friends!"
"Battle and beat me first." Giovanni said with a smirk as Gary let out his Charizard, a cold glare fixated on his face. Giovanni's smirk grew as he threw two pokéballs into the air, releasing a Rhyhorn and a Nidoqueen. "Lets see if this luck will save your friends a second time!"
"Venusaur, Grass Knot on Nidoqueen!" Leaf exclaimed, pointing to the pokémon.
"Brick Break!" Gary ordered, pointing towards Rhyhorn. The two super effective attacks hit, Rhyhorn out almost instantly while Nidoqueen winced as the strong tendrils of grass wrapped around her arms and legs, holding her in place.
"Nidoqueen, Poison Sting, Rhyhorn Scary Face!" Giovanni ordered with a flick of his wrist. Nidoqeen, though trapped by the grass knot, let out a ton of poisoned, flowing needles, piercing the skin of both pokémon and nearly hitting the trainers as well. The Scary Face attack locked Charizard in place, meaning that the fire-flying type couldn't escape even if she tried.
"He's ruthless!" exclaimed Leaf as Poison Sting rushed past her, nearly hitting her bare arm.
"Why, thank you, I'll take that as a compliment." Giovanni smirked.
"Tell your Charizard to fly up high." Leaf muttered to Gary. He blinked, but nodded nonetheless.
"Charizard, fly up!" Gary ordered, his faithful started obeying.
"Venasaur, Earthquake!" Leaf ordered, the building suddenly shaking violently. Just as everyone was sure that it would collapse, Nidoqueen an Rhyhorn fainted. Giovanni seemed unfazed as he returned them and sent out a Nidorino and Kangaskhan. Leaf blinked at this. "A normal and poison type."
"Charizard, Focus Blast! Leaf, cover for us!"
"Grass Knot, keep them in place!" Leaf ordered, watching Charizard overhead as it stared intently at her two targets. Once again, the small, sturdy tendrils burst from the ground and wrapped themselves around the limbs of the opponents. Suddenly, a blast of glowing energy shot down, slamming into Kagaskhan, knocking in unconscious almost immediately.
"Alright, a one-hit KO!" Gary exclaimed arrogantly.
"Now it's my turn." Leaf said. Rage coursing through her veins, Leaf ordered the final attack. Her mighty Venusaur, knowing of his trainers past with this notorious team, unleashed the Solar beam, knocking out his final pokémon. A moment of absolute silence as Giovanni returned his Nidorino.
"Listen closely, Giovanni," Leaf spat his name like it was a vile taste in her mouth. "I don't care what trickery you use against me, I'll beat you every damn time." her Venasuar let out a growl, feeling the same emotions as his trainer.
"We won." Gary said coldly. "Now leave." Giovanni looked slightly surprised for only a moment before his cold smirk came back.
"I'm an honorable man." he said. "So we will take our leave. Good day." Suddenly the lights turned off, getting shouts of exclamation and a very girly scream. Then the lights turned back on and Giovanni was gone.
"Was that you screaming?" Gary asked with a smirk.
"No." Leaf said, glancing at the shaking president who was pushing himself off the floor. Gary shrugged, and moved towards the security monitors on the desk. After clicking a few things, he stood back.
"All of them, gone. Completely left the building." he said calmly. "I know where Fire and Dayna is, as well."
"That's great." Leaf said. "Sir," she turned back towards the president, who seemed slightly frazzled, but otherwise unharmed. "Our friends are seriously hurt, we'll be right back, okay?"
"O-of course. I must get my bearings myself." he said, sitting down in his chair with a shaky sigh. The two bolted from the room, Leaf following Gary as he traveled down several flights of stairs, and into another room with two locked doors, side by side.
"Flareon!" Leaf exclaimed as the fire type popped out of her pokéball. "Melt the locks, now!" With a small roar and a burst of flames, the locks and doorknobs clattered to the floor in a half melted mess. "Dayna!" exclaimed Leaf as the blond girl ran out of the room in a panic.
"Fire won't speak to me anymore! We were talking for a while after I woke up, we could hear each other through the walls, but he suddenly stopped!" she exclaimed as she ran into the other room, where Fire, arm still against his stomach, stared blankly at the wall. His eyes were drooping, and he was having trouble keeping them open. Blood was pooling around him, but he was breathing, quick, short breaths. "Fire!" exclaimed Dayna in a panic.
"Don't let him fall asleep!" Gary exclaimed, taking charge of the situation. "Is there a pulse?"
"W-weak but th-there." Dayna said, moving her fingers from his neck.
"Leaf, call the paramedics. If they're on there way, tell them to hurry." Leaf, in a slight shock, numbly nodded, and brought out her pokégear. Gary and Dayna worked to pull off Fires jacket and shirt, revealing three long, deep claw marks across his stomach. Gary winced while Dayna gasped. Once again, Gary began taking charge. "Dayna, this is going to be hard, but I need you to make a remedy to disinfect the cut, okay? I'm going to try and stop the bleeding." Dayna swallowed and walked out of the room, where her and Fire's bags were located. Gary, on the other hand, ripped off his black polo, balled it up, and pressed it to the three claws, almost instantly soaking it with crimson blood.
"Yes, my friend is bleeding profusely. I don't know how long, for a few hours? They look fresh, and we've only been separated for three days! Yes, he has a pulse and is breathing... Well what do you think we're trying to do?! Make popcorn?! Arceus... Oh, Arceus..."
"G-ary?" Fire asked in between gasps. "Where's Day-na?"
"Fine. Don't talk." Gary grunted, pressing against the cuts. He held up the bloody polo, grimaced seeing that it was dripping slightly, and tossed it aside as Leaf hung up the pokégear.
"They're speeding up, I'm pretty sure, but-"
"Give me your shirt." Gary ordered. Leaf blinked.
"Wh-What?!" Leaf exclaimed, red to the face and slightly taken aback by his sudden and unusual request. Gary, impatient, reached forward, grabbed the bottom hem of her blue tank-top, and basically ripped it over her shoulders, leaving her in her plain black cami.
"I'm sorry." Gary said, balling up the turquoise garment and holding it to the cuts, instantly staining it crimson. "Fire doesn't have time to wait."
"I... It's fine." Leaf said, suddenly feeling very bare with out the shirt.
"Okay, I'm here!" Dayna said, holding two clay bowl, one with some sort of liquid in it, the other with some sort of mint-greenish paste in it. She was balancing a roll of gauze in the crook of her elbow. She glanced between shirtless Gary and tank-topless Leaf, and then at the bloody polo in the corner. Her eyes fell on the shirt at Reds cuts, stained crimson, but the blood no longer flowing into the shirt.
"I think we stopped the bleeding." Gary said. "It took two shirts, but it stopped."
"Paramedics are on their way." Leaf said. Dayna sighed, and kneeled next to Fire.
"Day-na..." he mumbled, eyes glazed over.
"Shh." Dayna cooed as she removed the bloody shirt. "This is going to disinfect the cuts. It's going to hurt, but since we don't know what kind of bacteria was growing on the Houndooms claws, you desperately need this. Do you understand?" Fire grabbed at Dayna's spare hand and, slowly, he nodded.
"Arceus, we're going to loose him," Gary said. Dayna looked at his hand entwined with hers, closed her eyes, and dumped the homemade disinfectant onto the gashes. Their was a moment of dreaded anticipation, and then a strange sizzling noise. Fire screamed in agony, nearly crushing Dayna's hand in his grip. Slowly, the noise came to a stop, the once red and angry gashes a light pink.
"Arceus, Mew, Arceus, gah!" Fire exclaimed, reaching up to touch the now clean gashes.
"No, don't!" Dayna exclaimed. Gary immediately went into action, holding his arm down while he jerked. "Fire, it's going to hurt, it's helping, though. I promise you, it will be over soon." she turned towards Leaf. "Leaf, get the other bowl, and put it on the cuts until there's none left." Leaf nodded, picking up the clay bowl. Scooping the green stuff into her palm, she slathered it over the first cut, continuing the process until none of the medication was left. Fire's grimace of pain slowly turned into that of relief.
"That..." he paused. "Doesn't feel so bad..."
"Can you sit up for a moment?" Dayna asked. Fire grimaced as he pushed himself up, Dayna supporting him. "Gary, Leaf," she nodded towards the gauze. The two took it and began to wrap it around Fire's torso, covering the cuts completely and tying the ends in a knot. Dayna let out a sigh. "That should do it. How long till the paramedics get here? He'll need blood, since he lost so much..." she was interrupted by sirens and sudden footsteps on the stairs. Suddenly, paramedics burst into the room, rolling a gurney into the room.
"Is there more than one injured person?" one ordered, taking in the bloodied shirts tossed aside.
"Only Fire." Dayna said. The paramedic blinked.
"Miss, you're bleeding profusely on your head." he said. Dayna blinked, and put her fingers up to the gash on her head.
"Oh... I guess with all the action with Fire, I forgot about myself." Dayna said, watching as two more loaded Fire onto the gurney and rolled him out of the room.
"Can you walk, Miss?"
"Yes."
"We're going to have to fix the gash on your head." he said, looking at it. "I do not think it will require stitches, but I want to check for signs of a concussion." he then lead Dayna out of the room, leaving Gary and Leaf alone.
"I hope you don't plan on going outside like that." Leaf said. "Women already throw themselves at you, now they'll probably bow to your feet."
"I'll put on my spare shirt if my glory is to much for you, Leaf." Gary smirked. "I'm washing my hands, first." Leaf rolled her eyes and pulled her own spare tank-top over her head. Slowly, they walked to the nearest bathroom, leaving their discarded shirts behind. "I'll be right back," Gary said over his shoulder as he entered the mens room. Leaf leaned casually against the wall, watching from the window as they loaded Fire and Dayna into an ambulance.
"I'm surprised you're here again." a familiar voice rang in her head. Leaf froze at this, remembering the purple pokémon which she last saw in a test tube.
"Mewtwo?" she asked aloud in a quiet whisper.
"Tell me... are you the trainer that is causing such a ruckus amongst Team Rocket?"
"Hey Leaf. Leeeaf. Leaf!" someone clapped their hands in front of her face and she jumped slightly, blinking wildly.
"Uh, yeah, Gary?" she asked, turning to look at him, seeing as he had a fresh black polo shirt on.
"You zoned out for a minute there." he said. "The president wants to talk to us. Didn't you hear the announcement?" Leaf shook her head. "And what's a Mewtwo?"
"Nothing." Leaf said. "Absolutely nothing."

"You youngsters saved not only my life, but the lives of every employee in the building! I'm grateful. So grateful, in fact, that I want to give you this." the president pressed a button under his desk, and a pedestal suddenly rose up from the floor, a pokéball sitting behind glass. Leaf and Gary stared through the glass at the purple pokéball with two pink circles on it, a small white 'M' in the center just above the button.
"Is this...?" Gary asked, trailing off as the glass slid down into the pedestal.
"Yes, this is the Master Ball, guaranteed to catch any pokémon, even those that are said to be legends." the president whispered, almost as if in awe with his own creation.
"This is what Giovanni wanted to steal?" Leaf asked.
"Can it really catch any pokémon?" Gary asked. For some reason, Lead immediately thought of Mewtwo. Did he plan to recapture this obviously crazy powerful pokémon...?
"Yes, to both questions." the president said while taking the pokéball in his hand and passing it to Leaf. "Now I am entrusting it to you. Perhaps you can catch whatever they want before they can?"
"Perhaps." Leaf said, taking it and tucking it safely into her bag. "Perhaps I can."
