Chapter 27: Sweet Revenge
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
The sound of his harsh whisper woke her up from her deep slumber. She struggled to focus, blinking her eyes to get her bearings. She saw a familiar face pacing down in their room.
She checked the time noting it was past midnight.
"Did I wake you?" Klaus asked softly covering the mouthpiece.
"Nik, it's past twelve, what are you doing?" She squinted noticing he was still in the suit he left this morning. "Did you just get back?"
"Go back to sleep love. We can talk in the morning," he said exiting the room to continue with his conversation.
She huffed slightly annoyed at his actions but snuggled back into bed nonetheless. They had returned from Maldives over a fortnight ago, yet the situation of Klaus's company was still very much in crisis mode.
Since being back to the States, she had rarely spoken to him. He was always busy regardless of the time of the day. He would leave early in the morning and return late at night. It felt weird to sleep alone in a cold bed after all the time they had spent together in their honeymoon. To top that off, sometimes Klaus didn't even bothered returning home. She knew it was selfish of her to want more of his attentions on her at a time like this, but she couldn't prevent the emptiness she felt.
It was difficult being pregnant with twins. She was past her five-month mark about twenty weeks along and the physical signals of her pregnancy were thriving. She was at the stage of pregnancy where even mundane activities such as walking to the bathroom was making her feel out of breath. Besides that, she had to get a whole new wardrobe of maternity clothes, as she couldn't wear any of her usual clothes due to her expanding waistline and widening hips. She was also starting to feel self-conscious due to her increasing weight and size.
It didn't help that she was by herself most of the time. The insecure part of her was convinced Klaus was avoiding her due to her expanding figure and weight gain despite knowing it was very much not true. She was honestly afraid of how she much she would weigh in the next few months. Her hormones were also still in overdrive that she couldn't make it through a tear- jerker commercial without crying. Pregnancy truly was harder than she anticipated.
Caroline tried going back to sleep however it was difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position. Her growing bump was becoming more difficult to sleep through the night. She must been tossing and turning for quite some time because she was still awake when her husband returned to bed.
She watched as Klaus stripped down to his boxers than climbed into bed.
"Why aren't you sleeping?" He asked pulling her into his arms.
"Can't sleep," she mumbled.
He kissed her forehead, and then tucked her face into his chest. "I'm sorry for waking you."
"It's not a big deal. How's the company?"
Klaus sighed playing with her hair. "I'm still trying to fix things, but I don't want you to worry over it."
"Is there anything I can do to help?"
He shook his head. "Elijah is sorting out the legal aspect, hopefully we will set things back on track soon."
"I've missed you," she absentmindedly trailed her finger over the infinity tattoo he got of her. It still felt surreal that he had her name permanently inked on his body.
"I missed you too love. You have no idea how much," he murmured, stroking her hair once more.
"Promise me you won't overwork yourself."
"I can't make promises but I'll try. I've been working longer hours these past few days because my assistant had to return to Texas to visit his sick father. You remember Mike don't you?"
She nodded, "Have you tried finding a new assistant?"
"No, it would be too much of a hassle to train one especially at a time like this."
"Oh.."
"Sleep sweetheart, it's really late. We can talk in the morning," he yawned, his eyelids growing heavier and heavier.
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
He woke up to her screams. The kind of screams that shook the very core of his soul. He was immediately on full alert only to realize that his wife was having a bad dream.
"Caroline," he shook her gently.
She woke up breathing heavily; sweat dampening the roots of her hair.
"Hey, you're safe," he reassured her pulling her close.
"Klaus," she uttered huskily trying to get her heart rate to normal.
"You had a nightmare. None of it is real," he stroked her hand soothingly.
"It felt real," she choked recalling how vivid it seemed.
"Want to talk about it?"
"I dreamt I lost the babies," she whispered trying to rid herself of the leftover feelings from her nightmare.
"It was just a bad dream," he brushed her matted hair tenderly.
She was about to tell him how intense the dream felt when she felt a sharp pain, which caused her to double over.
"What's wrong?" Klaus looked over his wife worriedly. "Are you in pain?"
It was the first time she'd ever felt anything like it. She was shocked at it, thinking that she must have imagined the whole episode when she felt the kick again. "Klaus," she gasped in wonder.
"Caroline, tell me what's wrong."
She smiled and shook her head. Instead of telling him, she grabbed his hand and pressed it to her tiny baby bump. "Can you feel it?"
He pressed both hands to her stomach. His brows drew together in deep concentration. "What-"
He felt it then. The babies kicking. Their babies kicking.
"Is that…" He tried to ask, but his voice got stuck in his throat.
Caroline nodded with joy, understanding what he was silently asking. "It's the babies." It was the first movement she had felt and she was filled with happiness that Klaus had shared this precious moment with her.
"They're doing it again," he said in awe, feeling the twins kicking again.
Caroline was delighted to see the look of pure happiness and amazement in his eyes.
"My babies," he said softly, before lowering his head and kissing her ever so gently on her small bump.
"Our babies," she smiled.
The pair spent the next few minutes enjoying how miraculous it felt. "Does it hurt?" Klaus asked. He had read several books of pregnancy and childbirth that the kicking tends to be quite painful for the mother.
"Just a little but isn't it amazing?" She asked ignoring the pain. "I think the twins are excited to meet us."
"Please be gentle to your mother little loves," he whispered. "Your mother is very fragile."
Caroline smiled at the sight of her husband softly talking down to her stomach. She could tell Klaus was going to be an amazing father. She allowed him to continue touching her stomach and talking to it until the urge to pee became unbearable.
It took some effort to get out of bed but it was easier than normal due to Klaus's help. "Have you been having trouble getting out of bed?" Klaus asked while she walked into their en-suite bathroom.
"A little."
"Why didn't you tell me?" He asked her once she was done.
"It's nothing to worry about. I'm still able to get up, it's just taking more time," she brushed off.
"You'll tell me when it gets too difficult?"
"I will," she nodded. She knew he was concerned for her safety but sometimes he was too overprotective.
"I have to go to work," he sighed looking at the time. It was already six in the morning. He needed to be at his office by seven past due to his scheduled conference and meetings with his board of directors.
"Already?" she pouted walking to him.
"I know sweetheart," he pressed a swift kiss on her forehead. "Go back to bed love," he said before exiting their room.
Seeing as his wife was up, he decided to serve her with a breakfast in bed. They hadn't been able to eat together for quite some time and he thought this could change that. He busied himself in his large kitchen while he waited for a fresh pot of coffee.
He made a sandwich filled with cheese and tomato slices than filled a glass of orange juice. After finishing up his portion of a toasted sandwich and coffee, he placed her serving on a small tray and carried it to his bedroom.
He frowned seeing his wife absent from the bed. "Caroline?" He called placing the tray on the bedside table.
"Hmm," she walked out of the bathroom.
Klaus stared at his wife. She had taken a shower and was dressed in a pleated light green chiffon dress. Her hair was already perfectly curled and she had also applied some light makeup. "Are you heading out?" he frowned. "At this hour?"
"Yup."
"Where to? You can take the car then, Ben can drive you to wherever you're heading."
"That won't be necessary," she said applying some mascara.
"I insist love. It would be better than taking a cab."
"It's not that, we're heading to the same direction."
"Where are you heading?" He asked while stripping naked to use the shower.
"I'm going to work with you!"
"You're what?" He turned abruptly facing her, momentarily forgetting his nakedness.
Caroline couldn't stop herself from checking out his beautiful shaft. It was erect and thick. She had missed feeling the amount of pleasure it brought her.
"You said you needed an assistant, so I thought I could help out," she said wetting her dry lips.
"Love, I don't think it's a good idea."
"Why not?" she crossed her arms over her chest staring at him heatedly. "If you're worried about the experience, I'll have you know I do have experience working for a firm. I was working part- time as Damon's secretary throughout my senior year and I also did a summer program for my family's firm."
"It's not that," he started.
"Are you embarrassed of me than? Embarrassed of having a pregnant woman as your assistant?"
"Of course not," he explained. "I just don't think you need to tire yourself out through working. Being pregnant is hard enough."
"Klaus, I'm pregnant, not an invalid," she said quickly.
"Do you really think it's wise?"
"I get to spend time with you, so why not? Besides I'm been so bored at home lately, all my friends are busy as well. Please?"
"Caroline I.." How could he object her when she was giving him that look? He really was a pushover when it came to her. He would move heaven and hell for his wife.
"Please? I'll head home if I start feeling tired."
"Fine," he relented knowing he would basically give in to anything she desired.
"Thank you Nik," she beamed fluffing her hair.
"Whatever makes you happy love."
"You brought me breakfast," she exclaimed noticing the tray of food.
"Why don't you eat up while I take a shower," he told her looking at his naked self.
"Sorry," she blushed eyeing his swollen erection.
He moved past her swiftly not wanting to test his control. "We'll leave in thirty minutes."
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
Caroline had finished the sandwich and fruit juice he prepared for her by the time Klaus exited the shower. "How was it?" He asked with a towel wrapped around himself.
"It was really great," she answered laying out a set of clean clothes for him. "You're wearing a suit again right?"
He nodded eyeing the ensemble she had laid out on the bed.
"You don't have to wear it if you don't want to," she said hastily seeing that his gaze remained fixed on the bed.
"Don't be silly, I'm just not used to having someone pick out clothes for me."
"Okay, well do you like what I picked?"
He nodded rummaging the drawers to find a clear pair of underwear. She watched him moved around, first drying his hair then putting on the clean boxers. Caroline was happy with how he looked with the suit she picked. The grey suit paired with the pale blue shirt complimented his stormy eyes.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" He asked her once more while spritzing his favorite cologne.
"Yes, I'm sure," she said walking out of the room to wait for him.
Accepting that she wasn't going to change her mind, he finished getting himself ready for work. By the time he exited their bedroom, his wife was already waiting at the front door.
"A little eager there love?"
"I've been cooped up in the house for days now," she lamented showing how eager she was to get out of the house.
"You could have gone out shopping during the day," he pointed out.
"And risk having the paparazzi on my tail while I look like a whale? No thank you."
"You look beautiful," he told her. She was still gorgeous, even at five months pregnant. In fact, she looked even more radiant than ever. Her skin looked like it was glowing.
"You always say that," she chided.
"I'm only speaking the truth. You'll forever be the most stunning woman I've ever laid eyes on."
Caroline laughed a little at how genuine he sounded. It was obvious she had gained some weight. Hence it was nice to know that despite her growing figure, Klaus would still try to convince her that her pregnant body was beautiful.
"I don't think you'll say that when I'm nine months along," she countered. "I'll be fat and most likely look like a whale."
"Come on sweetheart," he cooed. "You're not fat, you'll never be fat in my eyes."
"I hope you mean that," she hit his arm playfully.
"Mr. Mikaelson. Mrs. Mikaelson," Ben- Klaus's driver of five years greeted.
"Morning Ben," Caroline smiled entering the car as the driver held the door for her.
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
Ben dropped them off at Mikaelson Global in record time. It was only a few minutes past seven when they got there. The lack of employees was another giveaway at how early it was.
"So what do I need to do?" Caroline asked once they got to Klaus's spacious office.
"I already checked my schedule for the day, so maybe you could start with sorting out the mails and returning those unanswered calls."
"Is that it?" She really thought she could be a bigger help than that. She was filling the position of his personal assistant, not just some random secretary.
"We'll start with that okay?"
"Alright," she agreed begrudgingly going to her new desk.
Klaus watched her getting settled at his personal assistant's desk through the glass panel in his office wall. He would never have imagined a day where his wife would abruptly decide to work at his assistant. It sounded like those cheesy romance scenarios of an office romance where the boss always hooks up with the secretary. Nonetheless, Klaus was pretty content with the view he was receiving.
The woman was perfect. He could see how determined she was at this new task. It was a welcome distraction from the amount of paperwork he had to look through. Satisfied that his wife was getting along just fine, he returned his attentions to his work.
Sorting out the mails and returning client's phone calls were easy. Caroline managed to complete both task in less than an hour. Thus, there she was sitting at her desk fondling with her fingers. Klaus had left a while ago to attend a board meeting at the conference room downstairs and she didn't want to interrupt him. She didn't know what else she could do.
Another hour had past and there were still no signs of him returning. She was growing bored. The whole floor was dead silent seeing as the whole floor only housed Klaus's private office and his personal assistant's desk. She tried occupying her time by checking the news to see whether there were any updates on the firm. It was just before eleven when the blonde stood up needing some air.
She also needed to stretch as her legs were cramping up again. She took the elevators and decided to head for the coffee shop across the firm. She knew Klaus drank roughly three cups of coffee per day and since she was taking a break, she decided to get her husband some coffee.
The café was busy for the time of the day. She slowly followed the line to place her order. She perused the menu board above the barista who was busy steaming milk.
"How can I help you today?" the barista smiled.
"I'll grab a café Americano with an extra shot and one of your brownies please."
"Was that decaf you're after Miss Salvatore?"
"No erm Kristen," Caroline smiled reading her nametag. "It's not for me."
"Oh my bad," Kristen blushed. "You're really beautiful in person," she couldn't help but add.
"Thanks," the blonde laughed lightly. "The coffee is for my husband, though l'll grab a soy decaf vanilla latte for me thanks."
She paid for the beverages and proceeded to wait for her order. Instead, she was ushered by one of the staff to take a seat. They really did pay extra attention to pregnant women, she thought.
Five minutes later, Kristen set both drinks and her box of brownie in front of her.
"Thanks," she got up from her chair.
"Could I possibly get an autograph?" The young barista asked shyly,
"Of course."
"I've seen all your movies," she couldn't help but gush.
"Thanks. Here you go," the actress handed her the autograph.
"Thank you. Have a nice day and I added an extra blue berry muffin, it's on me."
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
She was walking through the revolving doors of the building when she spotted a familiar figure. "Elijah!" She called out happily. She hadn't spoken to the oldest Mikaelson sibling since her wedding.
"Caroline," the lawyer smiled turning to face her. "The pregnancy glow suits you."
"Thanks Lijah. I'm past my half way mark which is still unbelievable." She stared down at the little bump with pride, her hand automatically resting on her swollen abdomen.
"My brother must be filled with happiness," a smile crept across his lips at seeing how happy she was. "I myself can't wait to meet my little niece and nephew."
"It shouldn't be long before we get to meet them," she whispered. "Enough about me, how have you been Lijah? Are you here for Klaus?"
"Indeed I am. We agreed on going through the latest developments during lunch, though it seems that I'm quite early. Miss Rogers here was just informing me that my brother is in a meeting," he gestured towards the receptionist.
"You can wait for him in his office then," she told her already leading the way.
Elijah followed the blonde's footsteps boarding the elevator. "I'm surprise to see you here Caroline."
"I've just been so bored at home. The company seems to be taking up most of his time and Kat's busy with her new collection. Elena and Bonnie are always busy so I've been lounging in the house. Thus, when Klaus told me his personal assistant had taken a short leave, I literally jumped at the opportunity, though I'm really not much help to him."
"I'm sure that's not true."
"He gives me baby task, maybe that's his way of telling me that he doesn't want me here without saying it out loud," she bit her lower lip, her face scrunched into a grimace.
"Do you want to know what I think?" They walked out of the elevator side by side.
Seeing her nod, the Mikaelson continued. "My brother is a very complex man. I think he just wants to keep you safe by minimizing your activity."
"But it's my choice," she folded her arms.
"I know but Niklaus is used to being the alpha male. I think the hospital trip really scared him. He's afraid something might go wrong if you work too hard especially considering you're carrying twins. You know how protective he gets."
"If you put it that way I guess it makes sense," she nodded. "But it just gets on my nerves how fragile he thinks I am. I want him to treat me like how he usually treats me, not some glass doll that would break at the slightest touch."
"I understand he can get annoyingly protective but he's just putting you and the babies safety first. He always has your best interest at heart. So my advice is to just enjoy your time together, it might be difficult to have some alone time in a few months." He nodded to the soft swell of her belly. "You both will have two babies that will occupy your time and attentions."
"I might be overreacting then. The hormones must be messing with my brain cells."
"I'm positive he appreciates you being here. He's missed you."
"I've missed him too," she said sadly. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Of course."
"Is the company going to be alright? Can you tell me what happened? He doesn't tell me much as he doesn't want me to stress over it, but I would like to know Lijah."
"Let's take a seat first," he pointed for them to sit in the white sofas in the office.
"Tell me please," she placed the coffees and savories on the table.
"Logan Sanders, one of his main clients lost his entire entity to another party and this party has been using the company for some illegal activities. The SEC got hold of the suspicious activities and are investigating whether Niklaus knew or participated in those illegal undertakings. There's been numerous criminal activity such as fraud, off shore transfer, tax invasion and some other dealings."
"Klaus will be alright though?" She asked nervously. She believed that her husband was innocent in all this.
"My brother had no prior knowledge of this undertakings but someone has been framing him."
"Oh God! Who would do something like this? Why? Do you know who did this?"
"Niklaus is the owner of one of the most successful in the field. There are a lot of competitors that despise how successful he is. The man in question is called Trevor Queen. I heard he holds a huge grudge on Niklaus. Have you heard of him?"
"Yes.." She stuttered. Unbelievable. She would never have thought possible for Trevor to stoop so low. The man was vengeful but she didn't thought he could be this evil.
"We're trying to sort the mess out but word has spread of this and some of Klaus's other clients are filling a lawsuit."
"Do you think it will be okay?" She asked worriedly. The situation sounded critically serious and she was annoyed Klaus didn't fill her in on what's happening.
"We'll get through this together," he told her firmly. "I don't want you to worry about it. Niklaus will kill me if he found out I told you."
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
"Elijah sorry to keep you waiting!" Klaus loosened his tie and unbuttoned his collar while strolling in.
"It's alright brother. It's been less than ten minutes. Besides your lovely wife has been very welcoming," he humored wanting his brother to relax. He could sense how stress his younger brother was at the moment.
"I hope you haven't been complaining about me behind my back love," he chuckled moving to wrap an arm around her waist then pulling her close against his body. He then pressed his lips on her forehead in the quick and proper fashion of a gentleman.
"Elijah was just telling me about your lunch plans." She tried to keep her voice even. She was trying to battle how distraught she felt about what Elijah just told her. Why would Klaus hide that from her? Did he not trust her with it?
"Shit, I totally forgot to tell you."
"You're more than welcome to join us Caroline," Elijah offered.
"No..I don't want to get in the middle of it. You both have business to discuss."
"Nonsense, love. Of course you'll be joining us. What sort of husband would I be if I neglect my wife?" He tried to humor her. He had felt her body tense when he pulled her to him.
"My brother is right. You won't be imposing us at all," Elijah reaffirmed not realizing the tension.
"Okay then," she forced a small smile.
"Great, let me just organize some paperwork first then we can leave," he let her go turning to face his desk.
"Elijah, can you give us a moment please?"
"Sure, I'll be downstairs then."
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
As soon as Elijah was out of earshot, Caroline whipped around and stared at him pointedly. "Why didn't you tell me Trevor was behind this?"
"How did you…" he started, "Elijah," he grunted. He had specifically told his brother to keep his wife out of the loop. Caroline could be a neurotic control freak when she was stressed and he really wanted to avoid that. He should have known Elijah would cave.
"Were you planning on telling me?" She took a step forward and poked an index finger at his broad chest.
"Ow." He rubbed the spot.
Taking another step, she jabbed at his chest once more. "I'm a big girl and don't need protecting."
"Stop that."
"Then tell me why you hid this from me," another poke and step followed hard on the second.
"It was unimportant and I didn't want to worry you."
"Unimportant?" she shrieked. "It sounds bloody serious to me!"
He sighed taking a deep breath. "Will you sit down first? You're nearly six months pregnant woman."
"Arrgh, I'm pregnant, not an invalid. When will you stop treating me like one?" She wasn't afraid to show him how annoyed she was.
"Calm down love," he cajoled.
"Seriously!" She snapped. "God, you're infuriating!"
"I'm infuriating?" he grinned. "Come on love, don't be mad. You know you love me," he moved to stand behind her. Klaus placed his hands around her waist to caress the soft swell of her belly.
"You arrogant cocky infuriating ass," she retorted trying to move her body out of his reach.
Her little tantrum didn't faze him though. "Did you call me an infuriating ass?" he teased.
"Yup. Let me go Klaus."
"Love, you know you don't mean that," he pulled her to him, dropped his voice to a whisper.
"Were you ever going to tell me?" She asked above a whisper.
"No," he confessed.
"Why not? I thought we don't have secrets between one another!"
"We don't," he said softly. "I just didn't want to see you get all worked up over it. I didn't want you worrying sweetheart. We're having two babies. Any more stress on you isn't good."
"So instead you lie to me?"
"I didn't lie, I just kept the truth away from you. It's not something I want you to worry over. Elijah and I have got it covered."
"It's still not right. You shouldn't be keeping anything from me."
"Caroline love, I'm sorry for what I did but I've only wanted to keep you safe. You and our children's safety remain to be my main concern."
"Do you promise to not hide anything more from me?"
"I'll do my best."
"Good, don' think this is over Mr. Your brother is waiting for us so we'll continue this when we get home."
"Of course not," he said voice full of amusement.
"Here, I got you some coffee before I knew you were going to be such a dick," she shoved the paper cup into his chest.
"Come on love, we have a lunch to get to."
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
Lunch with Elijah had been uneventful. She found out how much trouble Mikaelson Global was in. Although she couldn't comprehend in depth on the brothers' conversation, she could pick out several words and it was not a good sign. Several of Klaus's clients were abandoning their contracts stating that Klaus had breached his end of the obligation.
Why would Trevor do something like this to them? To the company? It was obvious the man had a grudge on Klaus but was it really necessary to take things to this extent?
He was taking it too far. There was plenty of other stuff at stake here due to his accusation. She needed to try and talk to the man. Maybe she could work something out that would stop him from making things worse.
Klaus had left after they got back to the office for another meeting. Caroline had been toying with her phone, trying to muster the courage to do what she thought was right. She had tried to call him a couple of times but she chickened out at the very end.
What are you so afraid off? He started this, you're just making things right. But should you really be doing this behind Nik's back?
She couldn't tell her husband what she intended to do. Nik would never allow it. He was a man of pride, he wouldn't allow her to call Trevor and try to compromise.
Her hand hovered over the contact she had saved. Do it Caroline!
She finally built up her courage to dial the number. Her heart was beating so fast and the palms of her hands were sweating as she was left wondering if she was doing the right thing.
The call connected before she could change her mind. "Hello," a rough voice spoke.
"Hi Trevor, I'm not sure if you remember me but this is Caroline," she said trying to keep her voice calm and even.
Trevor was surprised to her from her. "Mrs. Mikaelson," he sneered feeling the rage he had for Klaus starting to build up.
"Yes that's me," she said lightly.
"Is there something you need?"
"I know you are manipulating Klaus and his clients. It's not right, I want you to stop this revenge plan of yours."
He laughed at her request. "No can do. I'm only giving him what he deserves. I'm sorry you are caught in the cross fire though."
"You can't just frame my husband for something he hasn't done! That's not right!"
"Oh yes I can and if you haven't realized I already did."
"What would it take for you to stop this?"
"Now you're talking. Hmm, meet me tonight at The Ritz Carlton at seven sharp and I'm sure we can work something out."
"Fine," she agreed not thinking through.
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
"You were right," Trevor ended the call turning to face the woman sitting opposite him.
"I told you she'd eventually call. I did some digging and Caroline Salvatore is one of the most gullible and innocent woman out there," the curly haired brunette laughed.
"Not everyone can be a conniving bitch like you."
"Ouch, are you forgetting we are both benefiting from this," she belittled him.
"I just think we've taken things too far. I get that you want Mikaelson but I don't think this is right."
"Oh come on, are you seriously backing down now? Man up would you! No wonder your wife left you."
"Don't push it Tatia," he growled warningly. In spite of his wife's infidelity, there was still a part of him that was still pining after her.
"We're almost there. The hard part is over now we'll just have to wait and see their marriage fall apart," she reminded her partner in crime.
"I still disagree that we need to drag her into this. The woman is pregnant for God's sake." He tried to make her see how serious the situation was. He had known Tatia was a malicious woman but even he felt that this was wrong.
"I cannot fucking believe you're having cold feet now!" She stared at him pointedly. "We've already hit Klaus where it hurts most. He'll come running back to me when he finds out I'm the only one that can help him and you'll get the pleasure of seeing Klaus suffer just like how he hurt you," she grinned.
"I know the plan," he deadpanned. "I just think we should leave Caroline out of this."
"You're not seriously developing feelings for that slut are you?"
"Do you know how fragile a pregnant woman's psychological state can be? Rose suffered from severe emotional distraught when she was in her early stages and the doctor said that was the cause of her miscarriage. What if something happens to her baby? Are you going to be responsible for the death of it?"
Trevor had been filled with so much hatred for the cocky bastard that he hadn't given much thought to their lunatic plan. Now that everything was in motion, it dawned on him how severe the consequences of his actions might be. It surely did not help that Tatia was still hell bent on getting the Mikaelson back.
"I cannot believe this. Are you fucking kidding me? We're in this together," she shrieked. "I will not take the fall alone! I don't give a fuck if she loses the baby. It's not going to affect me anyway."
"You're bloody delusional woman! Even if the bastard knows that you're the key to his company's problems, I can assure you he's not going to come crawling back to you. Haven't you seen how happy he is with Caroline? He's never going to leave her for you especially now that she's carrying his offspring."
"Why are you defending that wench? Have you fallen for her? What does she have that make men fall head over heels for her so damn easily? I seriously don't get what he sees in her. She's just so plain and ordinary looking. A typical dumb blonde. Besides, that fake innocence just makes me want to throw up," she snarled pretending to gag.
"You're really a crazy bitch! I don't know why I even agreed to be apart of this," he groaned and ran his fingers through his hair in frustration.
"It's too late to regret now, partner."
"I will not risk hurting Caroline or the baby. Our target is on Klaus, let's keep it that way," he exploded. "We keep her out of this."
"You should tell her to back off while on your little date later then," she snapped.
"I mean it Tatia, or else I'm out!"
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
The call ended for some time before Caroline could grasp what she had just agreed to. She had agreed to meet the devil himself. It was by far one of her most reckless decision she'd made in her life.
The shrill ring of her mobile startled her out of her thoughts. She jumped before accepting the call.
"Caroline?"
"Hey Damon," she said in a breathless voice.
"How's my darling sister doing?" He teased trying to lighten the situation.
"What's up?"
"I heard about the trouble Klaus got himself in. Are you all right? Do you want to come back home and stay till it dies down?"
"You're overreacting."
"Stefan and I are really worried about you. The situation looks pretty bad," the older Salvatore countered. He had kept up with the latest development of Mikaelson Global and things were really not looking well for his brother-in-law.
"Oh My God, I must not be getting the full picture if you think it's bad!"
"Take a deep breath Care bear," Damon instructed from the other line.
"Can we even do anything about it? Please tell me there's something we can try," she said in a broken whisper.
"I don't think so," her brother started than paused. "Wait, maybe there's something. I have a mate who's working for the SEC, maybe he can fill us in on what's wrong and maybe we can enlist for his help on the matter."
"Really that's great!" She beamed her mood already taking a turn. "Who is this friend and are you sure he'll help us?"
"You remember Enzo don't you? My mate who used to have a crush on you when you were in high school? It's a good thing then that Enzo is a big fan of telling the truth. He wouldn't just use a scapegoat to take the fall for the blame."
"I think I do remember him. It's been really long though, he's the one with the accent right?"
"Yup. I'm surprised you didn't fall for him when accents seem to be your type," he chuckled.
"Haha, very funny Damon. You're hilarious," she gritted her teeth. "Come on brother. This is serious Damon."
"Fine, I'll stop," he humored her.
"Good, so can you please contact Enzo and arrange a meeting for me? Preferably as soon as possible before it gets any worse."
"Of course."
"Great! Let me know the details. I got to go," she hurriedly ended the call seeing a man get off the elevator.
"I'm here to see Mr. Mikaelson," the man told her.
"Yes, do you have an appointment?" she asked while checking Klaus's schedule.
"I'm from the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission and I would like to have a word with your boss."
"Sorry, Mr…? She waited for him to tell her his name.
"Agent Markos Brown," he said.
"I'm sorry Agent Brown but Mr. Mikaelson is currently in a meeting. He shouldn't be too long, would you like to take a seat while waiting?"
"Well I suggest you let him know that I'm here. I have a warrant for the files relating to Sanders Corporation."
"Sorry, I'll get right on it," she flushed dialing Klaus's number. Shit! He had a warrant! Things were obviously spiraling out of control!
She breathed a sigh of relief when the call connected. "Caroline, I'm busy at the moment. I'll call you back when I'm done," she heard her husband's gruff voice.
"Wait Klaus. This is urgent! The SEC guy is here," she said nervously carefully taking a peek at the officer.
"FUCK! I'm on my way."
Markos had already taken a seat enjoying the view when she was done with the phone call. "Can I get you anything?" She tried making small talk.
"I'm good thanks," he replied curtly. He looked at her curiously before remembering why she looked so familiar. "I know you. You're Caroline Salvatore."
"Yes, I am."
"Your husband is in a lot of trouble."
"About that, you people have the wrong guy. I can vouch that Klaus doesn't dabble in any criminal affairs. You should be out arresting someone else."
"Enlighten me then," he urged.
"All these charges were not committed by Klaus but by one of his rivals. You should be directing your resources on Trevor Queen instead. He was the one the manipulated Sanders Corporation."
"That's a lovely theory of yours but the problem is Mr. Queen is the one that brought this to our attention. I doubt he's the culprit in it. Besides, all evidence points to Mikaelson Global."
"Have you even looked into Mr. Queen? Or are you just taking what he says for granted and using my husband as a scapegoat."
"Listen Miss, you don't work in Wall Street so you might not know how it works, but your husband committed a serious crime. Tax evasion, stock manipulation, fraudulent misstatements I can go on.."
"I told you, Trevor was the one responsible for it. Mr. Sanders lost his entire company to Mr. Queen through gambling. He's been manipulating the Sanders Corporation as the entity is still technically under Mr. Sanders. He's been using the company to for dirty dealings so your agency could direct your attention on Klaus's company. None of the allegations are true, Klaus was not apart of any of these recent transactions. He's doing this because he has a grudge on Klaus."
"You have to understand I'm only doing my job and all evidence points to Mr. Mikaelson."
Just then the sound of Klaus's voice filtered in the room.
"Glad for you to make it, Mr. Mikaelson," Markos stood up offering a handshake. "Agent Markos Brown."
"What can I do for you?" Klaus asked getting straight to the point.
The man pulled a folded document from inside his jacket. "This is a warrant for all files relating to the Sanders Corporation."
Klaus took the legal document and scanned it briefly.
"This is just a formal notice in advance. My men and I will return later this evening for the files requested. If you have no further questions, I'll be back for the files later."

"Klaus, what are you going to do?" Caroline asked her husband worriedly. If the SEC guy already had a warrant for files, that would mean they already had a pile of evidence ready to prosecute her husband with. "Klaus, are you listening to me?" She asked louder seeing her husband still staring blankly at the warrant.
He scrunched the warrant and threw it haphazardly. "I'm going to kill Trevor Queen."
"No you are not," she said tugging his arm in hopes of calming him.
"That dick will regret messing with me."
"You're not going to hurt him," she said sharply.
"I'm not just going to sit around and watch my company fall apart."
"I'm not asking you too. We just need to prove that you had no knowledge of any of this illegal dealings."
"Arrgh!" He swept all the papers off his desk in one angry motion. "How could I not know he had been pulling this stunt!"
"Damon has a friend that works for the SEC. He should be able to help you."
"You told your brother about this?" He frowned looking at her.
"I did," she answered plainly. "Though Damn knew before I said anything. I just asked him if he knew anyone that could help."
"Don't bother, I don't need his help," he raised his voice at her. Klaus was never one to ask for help and he wasn't going to start now. He had gotten along just fine by himself for the past thirty years of his life. He had started his company from scratch without any help from his family or friends. It was weak to ask for help and Klaus Mikaelson was not weak.
"Klaus.." she tried.
"I don't need your help Caroline. I can handle my company myself," he replied in spite.
"Why are you doing this? I'm just trying to help," she said lowering her gaze as she felt tears starting to form. Klaus had never ever yelled at her like this before, come to think of it he had never yelled at her. Not even when she was pushing his buttons. She didn't know quite how to deal with it.
"I've handled my company on my own just fine. I don't need some outsider's help to tell me how to run my own company," his tone was lethal.
"But maybe he can offer you some insight on your situation," she mumbled. "You shouldn't let your pride get in the way of this."
"My pride?" He bellowed incredulous. "I could have known Logan Sanders had lost his company to the bastard due to his gambling addiction. If it wasn't for that bloody two month vacation I took, this would never have happened!" He grunted in annoyance.
"Oh God, you're blaming me for this," she cried, the daunting realization that this was her fault.
If she wasn't admitted to the hospital that one time, Klaus would never have left his work to look after her.
Klaus looked at her dumbfounded. How on earth did she come to that ridiculous conclusion? The Wall Street highflier adored his company but it was nothing compared to the love he had for her.
"What? Sweetheart you have it all wrong." With wide eyes Niklaus couldn't believe the words that had just escaped his wife's mouth.
"I'm not blind Klaus, I'm not stupid." The blonde had never taken a tone with him like this before, it was like something in her shifted. "You took the leave to take care of me."
"I will never regret taking my time off for you," he told her firmly. "Don't you dare think that this is your fault."
"How can I not when you were just insinuating that?"
"I was not," he grabbed his wife by the chin forcing her to look him in the eye.
"I can see it in your eyes. You might not blame me for it, but you still regret your decision," Caroline said in a defeated tone.
"Listen to me, this is not okay. I don't want you thinking for one minute that I ever thought that this was your fault. It isn't. If it's any ones fault, it is mine. If I hadn't fooled around with his wife or got the contract fairly, I would not have this target on my back. This is most definitely not your fault, you understand me!"
"But.."
"No buts," he shushed her. "This is not because of you alright?"
Caroline didn't know what to say. She lifted her face and her teary eyes searched his face. She looked down one more and sighed, "Klaus I'm sorry, I…"
"Shhh," he whispered tightening his arm around her, pulling her head to nestle under his chin. He brought his left hand up to rest against her damp cheek. "Don't apologize."
"What are we going to do?" She asked when she felt calmer. She didn't move but kept her hand pressed to him, her head on his shoulder.
He smiled without realizing it and bent his head to place a light kiss on the top of her head. "We'll figure it out. Elijah is already filling a lawsuit as we speak."
"I really do believe you can turn the situation around but can you please just meet up with Damon's friend with me. Enzo's a childhood friend and I trust he'll do everything in his power to find the truth," she said quietly.
Klaus made a conscious decision to speak the words. "Okay, if you truly think he'll be beneficiary to our situation."
"We'll just talk to him first and see what he thinks. We can go from there okay? I don't want to pressure you into doing this."
He moved his hand to cup her face and stroked her cheek with his thumb, "Okay love."

"Have you spoken to Care yet?" The younger Salvatore asked when he stepped foot into the spacious office.
"Come on in Stefan," Damon mocked. His brother was always a gentleman to an outsider eye, but that was mostly a facade. "What happened to the common courtesy of knocking?"
"So what did she say?" He asked in an impatient tone ignoring of Damon's snarky attitude.
"Well from what I can tell Mikaelson got himself in some deep shit."
"We need to help them."
"Stefan brother, it'll be lovely if you'd stop stating the obvious," the raven haired Salvatore drawled. "Obviously we have to help him. This affects our sister. We have to protect her."
"Glad we are on the same page. I was concerned you would be petty and not help due to your distain for the man."
"I don't give a damn about Klaus, I'm doing this for Caroline."
Stefan shook his head at his brother's childish ways. Damon was in his early thirties yet most of the time; he acted like a ten year old.
"What's the plan?"
"Why am I always the one coming up with a plan? You should try coming up one yourself some time," he scolded.
"I'm not the one with the diabolical mind," the younger Salvatore countered.
"Obviously," Damon lamented. "It's not much of a plan but at least it's a start. Caroline filled me in on the situation and apparently Klaus wasn't associated with any of this accusations."
"So someone is framing him?"
"That's the best part. Caroline told me the man doing this is Trevor Queen. The guy who lost our multi- million contract to Klaus."
"The contract you practically handed it to Klaus on a silver platter in exchange for our sister's reputation," Stefan commented frowning at the implication of the situation. If Trevor was really the one behind this charade, Damon and him were partly at fault for giving Klaus the contract due to their personal relationship.
"Who could have known he would turn out to be such a sore loser?"
"What's the plan Damon?"
"We need to try to prove that he's innocent..."
"And how do we do that?" Stefan interrupted.
"Let me finish," he glared at his younger brother. "As I was saying, my friend Enzo works for the SEC and I'm going to ask him for help."
"That's your brilliant plan?" Stefan scowled. It didn't sound like a plan.
"Hey, at least I came up with something!"
"Is Enzo going to help?"
"I was just about to call him when you burst in here."
Damon gave him a dirty look before pulling up Enzo's contact. The call connected several seconds later.
"Enzo mate."
"Damon? Is that you?"
"It's me Enzo."
"I have to say I'm thoroughly surprised by hearing from you Damon Salvatore. It's been a while," Enzo grinned.
"It has. The last time we spoke must have been a couple of years ago. I was worried that you might have changed numbers, I'm glad you didn't."
"I'm guessing you need something."
"Just a favor."
"Lay it on me mate."
"I'm sure you heard about Mikaelson Global being under scrutiny from your agency."
"Yes what about it? A close colleague of mine is actually the head of the case."
"I hope this isn't a conflict of interest but I'm asking you to find evidence against your friend's case."
"Why pray tell would I do that?"
Damon sighed heavily before continuing. "The truth is Klaus is an innocent victim in the whole ordeal and we were hoping you could help us prove his innocence."
"We?"
"My sister and i."
"Caroline?" He asked in disbelief.
"Caroline's married to him," Damon offered.
"I heard about that, though I'm surprised they're still together."
"They are indeed still together and I really don't want to see her get hurt over this. Hence why I was hoping you could help us build a case to prove his innocence for old time's sake."
"Damon, this is a really big favor you're asking," Enzo told him seriously.
"I know and I feel awful for putting you in such a position but we really need your help," Damon said in desperation.
"It's going to be hard. There's a huge case on Klaus already. My colleague is already on his way to their headquarters as we speak."
"I understand that. I also know you're a firm believer of finding out the truth and I'm telling you Klaus Mikaelson isn't your guy. The guy you should be looking at is Trevor Queen."
"Do you have any prove that this Trevor guy is the one responsible?"
When Damon remained silent, he took his silence as a sign. "You don't even have any solid evidence yet you remained adamant that Klaus isn't our guy."
"Enzo please," Damon cut him off. "For old times sake. Help me just this once. My sister's happiness is at stake here. She's also heavily pregnant with twins. I can't let anything happen to him or it will undoubtedly affect her."
Enzo took the next few minutes to ponder and contemplate on his choice. Damon was one of his best mates growing up, in spite of their friendship growing apart in recent years, the Salvatore remains to be one of his most trusted confidant. Furthermore, he used to harbor a crush on Caroline. Although the feelings weren't present anymore, he still didn't want anything bad to befall on the gorgeous blonde.
"Alright, I'm fairly certain I'll regret this but I'll help you." He exhaled heavily telling Damon his decision.
"I owe you one mate," Damon smiled giving Stefan who was trying to eavesdrop a cocky grin.
"I'll drop by your place later and we can go over our game plan."
"I take it Enzo agreed?" Stefan asked watching Damon's relax demeanor after he ended the phone call.
"Of course he did. He's one of the good guys. Besides, what are friends for?"
"Great so now where do we go from here?"

"Ben, mind dropping me off at the Ritz Carlton please?" Caroline asked quietly when he had driven past the office building.
"Of course."
She gave him a small smile than resumed with her messy thoughts. Klaus had to meet another of his clients that he instructed Ben to send her home first. Instead of heading home, she was going to the hotel to meet up with Trevor behind his back.
Since having that fight earlier with her husband, Caroline had made a selfish decision of keeping this meeting from him. She knew he wouldn't react well to the news and would most likely forbid her from meeting with the enemy. She couldn't allow that. All his hard work was at stake here, she couldn't allow his pride to get in the way.
The blonde kept reassuring herself that this was for him that it was the right thing to do despite of how she was going about it. She didn't know why Trevor wanted to see her but she hoped she could try and change his mind and most importantly get him to stop this foolishness.
Caroline was so consumed with her inner thoughts that she jumped a little when Ben opened the door.
"We're here. Do you need me to wait for you?" Klaus's driver asked.
"It's alright Ben. I don't know how long I'll be. Don't worry about me, I'll see you tomorrow."
"But Mrs. Mikaelson," he stopped noting the subtle glare the blonde was giving him. "Caroline, my apologies."
"That's better," she beamed. Caroline hated it when Ben referred to her so formally. She had told him multiple times to call her by her first name, though the man was too stubborn at times. She had grown up in a loving and caring environment where she had formed close ties with the help her family had when she was younger. Because of that, she always felt uncomfortable when Klaus's housekeeper or driver acknowledges her so formally.
"Mr. Mikaelson gave me specific instructions to send you back home. It's my responsibility to send you safely back to your place."
"It's alright Ben. I can take a cab. Go home. It's already late, your family should be waiting for you."
"Are you sure?"
Caroline nodded, "Good night."
As she made her way into the lobby of the hotel, she felt her heart thumping quicker with each step she took. She was nervous about this meeting and her jittering nerves were not helping her. She was mentally berating herself for being a coward as all she wanted to do was turned back around to where she came from.
She was just about to turn around and forget about this whole arrangement when a cold voice stopped her. "You made it." She stiffened recognizing the owner of the eerie voice. The man that was the mastermind behind all this.
Cautiously, she turned around to face his cold and calculating eyes.
