The next day John and Nicki were planning on telling Ava the news that she was going to be a big sister but they chose to do it over ice-cream so it wouldn't be so bad for Ava if she wasn't really too thrilled on the idea. "What kind of ice-cream do you want princess?" asks John.
"Chocolate with lots of sprinkles," she answers with a smile. "Lots and lots of sprinkles."
"Okay," says John with a smile as he shakes his head. "And what about you, Nicki?"
"A vanilla milkshake will be fine," she says.
"Okay," he says as he walks to the window to order what they wanted.
"I love ice-cream," says Ava to Nicki. "Do you?"
"I do too," she says.
"My mommy doesn't let me eat too much sugar but daddy does," says Ava.
"Sugar is the best part of being a kid," says Nicki. "Why doesn't your mommy let you eat a lot of sugar?"
"I don't know. She says it will rot my teeth but my teeth are going to fall out anyway," says Ava making Nicki smile. She may have been 3 but she was as smart as ever. "Did you let your little boy have sugar?"
"I did," says Nicki. "He liked getting special treats."
"Me too," she says. "What was his favorite?"
"He liked hot fudge sundaes," says Nicki. "Those were his absolute favorites."
"Those are good too," says Ava. "I wish I could meet your son. He sounds fun. I get bored by myself."
"Really?" asks Nicki as she sees John approaching the table.
"Yes. My mommy doesn't let me have friends over and at Daddy's it's just him and me."
"Oh," says Nicki.
"One bowl of chocolate ice-cream with sprinkles for Ms. Ava Cena," says John as he hands Ava her ice-cream.
Her eyes grow big when she sees the ice-cream in front of her. "Sprinkles," she says with a smile. "Thank-you, Daddy."
"You're welcome, Princess," he says. "And here is a vanilla milkshake for Ms. Nicki James."
"Thanks," she says. "What did you get?"
"Just a hot fudge sundae," he says. "I'm not wrestling as much so I can eat some junk food."
"I didn't say anything," says Nicki with a smile. "Besides you look great."
"Thanks," he says with a smile. "So Ava how is your day going?"
"Good," she says eating a spoonful of ice-cream as it starts to melt in the Florida heat. "Even better with ice-cream," she says with a mouth full of ice-cream and sprinkles and her mouth surrounded by chocolate ice-cream.
"That's good to know," says John with a smile. "I guess the ice-cream is good?"
"It's the best!" she says.
"Take it easy you might get brain freeze," says John with a laugh.
"Okay, Daddy," she says.
"Ava, Nicki and I have a couple things we want to tell you okay?"
"Okay," she answers.
"First, how would you feel if Nicki came to live with us?"
"I would like that," she says. "I like Nicki."
"Okay because in a couple weeks she will be moving in with us," says John.
"That's awesome," she says. "Mommy's boyfriend Randy lives with her."
"Oh really?" asks John thinking about how his own best friend betrayed him and slept with Nikki behind his back.
"Yes, Daddy," she says. "Well, not really but he does have sleepovers."
"I see," says John. "Anyway, Nicki will be living with us."
"Okay," says Ava. "Is she going to be my new mommy?"
"Not your new mommy but she is going to be like a mommy to you," says John. "You don't have to call her mommy."
"But I want to," says Ava.
"I don't know if that's a good idea, Ava."
"But I want to," says Ava.
"Okay," says John going against his better judgment. Nicki remains quiet knowing that it is a bad idea for Ava to call her mommy. She doesn't' want to step on any toes or make anyone upset.
"Are you going to marry her, Daddy?"
"I don't know," says John. "So you're okay with her living with us?"
"Yes, Daddy," she says as she continues to eat her ice-cream.
"I just wanted to make sure it is all right with you," says John as he takes Nicki's hand under the table interlocking their fingers. "We also have some other big news to tell you."
"What?" asks Ava with excitement.
"Well," says John. "Nicki and I are going to have a baby so you're going to be a big sister!"
"I'm going to be a big sister?" asks Ava.
"Yes," says John, "You're going to be a big sister."
"Yay! When?"
"In May," says John.
"Is it a sister or a brother?"
"We won't know till the baby comes," says John. "Are you excited?"
"Yes!" she says. "I really want a baby sister!"
"We'll have to wait and see," says John with a smile.
Later that afternoon Ava was sitting in the living room watching a movie while Nicki and John were in the kitchen as Nicki was starting to prepare dinner. "That didn't go too bad," says Nicki.
"Not at all. She seems really excited," says John. "I just hope she's excited when the baby gets here."
"Me too," says Nicki. "But do you think it's a good idea for her to call me mommy?"
"Probably not," says John, "but she wants to."
"I know but I don't want to piss her real mom off she doesn't like me to begin with."
"She'll get over it," says John.
"Whatever you say," says Nicki, "and what's all this stuff with Randy? I thought he was your friend."
"He is," says John, "but he did sleep with Nikki while we were married. I was so mad at him but we worked it out."
"So it doesn't bother you that Nikki is still having a sleepovers with him?"
"No. I don't care," says John. "It's their lives. Nikki isn't my wife anymore."
"Okay," says Nicki as John's cell phone starts to ring.
"And speaking of the devil," he says before answering it. "Yes?"
"John, where's Ava? I want to talk to my little girl," says Nikki.
"She's watching TV," says John. "What do you want?"
"My daily phone call with her. I miss her," she answers.
"Fine," says John as he gets up and walks to the living room. "Ava, your mommy is on the phone."
"Mommy!" says Ava as she jumps up from the couch to talk to her mom. John hands her the phone. "Hi, Mommy!"
"Hi, Baby girl," she says. "How's everything at Daddy's?"
"Good," she says, "Daddy gave me a Sofia bedroom and I'm going to ballet."
"That sounds fun," says Nikki with a bit of jealousy in her voice. "I miss you."
"I miss you too, Mommy," she says. "But guess what!"
"What?" asks Nikki.
"I'm going to be a big sister!" she says.
"A big sister?" asks Nikki with even more jealousy in her voice. "That's cool."
"I know," says Ava, "Mommy, I have to go. I'm watching Sofia."
"Okay. Bye, Ava."
"Bye, Mommy," says Ava before hanging up the phone.
