"I didn't know he looked in your file Kate. Otherwise I would've hurt him," Dr. Parish explained. "I never go into detail about my patients."
"Mhmm."
"I may have said something but after the accident he was very interested in knowing more about you. I may have said something to shut him up but nothing too bad."
"Okay I understand," Kate said as she sipped her tea. Lanie wanted to explain and apologize for Esposito interfering in her files. "He actually was a great help." She glanced over at him watching tv on the couch. He just smiled and nodded.
"Really? Well I'm thankful. So how is everything going? Haven't talked to you in a bit."
"Rick and I are good. I told him I had a meeting with my lawyer so we could discuss the divorce. Will still doesn't know. I have no clue about when to tell him."
"Why not?"
"I feel if I tell him early then he'd want to try and make it work. And as much as I hate to admit it that would be the right thing to do."
"And you don't wanna do the right thing?"
"I wanna do the right thing for me. I always put other people first this time it's my decision."
"So you're going to surprise him with the papers?" She asked folding her arms signaling Kate still has her undivided attention.
"I don't want to but it seems like the best way to go. Unless you think otherwise."
"That's a pretty big bomb to drop on his life. I'd rather you talk to him first. Or tell him that you want a divorce before giving him the papers."
"I will. Now that I think about it, it would be hard on him and I would hate to see him upset and confused and hurt at the same time. Even though he's the one that cheated on me."
"At first."
Kate bit the inside of her cheek then sighed. "At first."
She left Lanie's house with a question on her mind.
What if she tells him and he doesn't want to make it work? And why does she care?
Kate picked up Castle on her way home so they could discuss what would happen after she presented Will with the divorce papers. Castle says if she's the one to leave then she can always come stay with him.
"No I'm going to stay here with Martin and Anna. I can't just leave them."
"Okay. What about when schools over?"
"What about it?"
"They'll be home more which means I get to see you less. Unless of course you tell them about us."
"It sounds as if you want me to not cared
"Don't worry," she said while walking over to him. "It'll all work out." Kate kissed him quickly on the lips but when he didn't react she turned to see what was bothering him. When she turned she saw Anna standing there staring at the two of them together.
"Anna? What-what're you doing here? I thought you were with your brother."
"No. He's out with John," she said quickly before adding,"what's going on? Where's dad?"
"Your fathers at work. Anna sit down. We need to talk." Kate glanced at Castle to say that she needed some time with her daughter.
Anna hasn't spoken to her in three days. She understand her anger but she won't even give Kate a chance to explain. After Rick left them alone to talk she asked if she was cheating on Will. Kate couldn't lie to her so she said yes then Anna stormed out.
Rick has been keeping his distance because he doesn't want to stir up the pot an make anything worse in case they get caught again.
Kate's on her way to the kids school to pick up Anna. She wants them to go grab lunch so she can talk to her. She knows Anna's upset and she's given her time to vent but now it's Kate's turn. Hopefully she can explain so Anna understands before she goes running to her father or brother.
When Anna saw that it was her mother coming to pick her up she looked defeated, as if coming here was the last blow of a sword in Anna's back.
"Hey Anna."
"Hi," she said horsely.
"I wanted to take you out to lunch if that's okay. I think we need to talk."
"Yeah okay." Anna isn't looking at her. She just put on her coat and walked out of the building to Kate's car.
After twenty minutes of silence Kate asked Anna where she wanted to eat but Anna just shrugged.
"How about Leone's? In park avenue. I know how much you like their grilled cheese."
"Okay."
Once they arrived they settled on an outdoor table since it's sunny today. They ordered their sandwiches with a glass of lemonade and a side of fries.
"It's time to talk Anna," Kate said.
"Okay. So talk."
"Excuse me?"
"You were the one that was kissing another man. You have explaining to do so do it."
Kate took a deep breath. "I get you're upset but don't you ever use that tone with me."
"Sorry," she muttered.
"It's alright." Kate sat back in her chair before beginning her explanation. "You're father and I haven't been very happy together in a long time. We haven't touched or kissed or even said I love you in over a year. Maybe longer."
"I've noticed."
"Have you also noticed that your father is home less? Always late nights or he has to go out of town. A few months ago I had this awful feeling that something wasn't right in our marriage."
"What're you saying?"
"Anna your fathers been cheating in me for quite some time," she admitted as calmly as she could.
"That is not true!" Anna yelled.
"It is Anna. I've got proof. And as hard as is it to admit it I'm cheating too. Recently I met someone and he makes me feel so alive and wanted and loved. With him everything is right."
"That doesn't make it okay mommy."
"I know it doesn't. Your father and I are getting a divorce."
Kate can see tears beginning to well up in Anna's eyes and she wishes there was something she could do to make them stop.
"I'm so sorry Banana. I wish you didn't have to find out the way you did."
"It doesn't matter how I found out I would've still been this upset."
This is hard for Kate too but she knows she has to keep on.
"I know. I'm sorry I wish there was something I could do or say to make it better."
The waitress came and sat their food on the table. She stopped and asked Anna if everything was alright and when she nodded the waitress eyed Kate before she left.
"Why is dad cheating on you? What did you do?"
"I'm not sure if it was something I did sweetie. I think he just lost interest. I've spent countless hours pondering over this. Am I too fat? Too skinny? Not pretty enough? Am I boring? Am I a bad wife or a bad mother? I could never find the answer. You'd have to ask him."
"Why didn't you try to talk to him and work it out? Why did you just start cheating too?"
Neither one of them started eating yet.
"He would never give me the time of day. He'd come home late and is be sleeping and when I woke up the next morning he'd be gone. If he came home early he was always to tired to talk. I've tried cooking for him, seducing him, crying for him and he always just shrugs and puts his back toward me."
"He turned you down?" Anna asked astounded.
"Yeah. I figured he was being faithful to his mistress."
"That's fucked up."
Kate laughed before agreeing. "Don't use that language anymore. Anyway Anna I'm seeing Rick- that's his name, because I know I deserve to be happy. Is it wrong? Yes but I'm trying to make it right."
"Okay," she nodded. "I get it. Are you going to tell Martin?"
"Yes but later. I wanted to wait to tell you until it was official."
"Dad doesn't know you want a divorce?"
"No he doesn't. He doesn't even know that I know he's cheating."
"Wow."
"I want you to know that I'm not telling you this to get you to hate your father."
"I know. It just sucks to know he could do this."
"Yeah. But know he still loves you and his decisions toward me have nothing to do with you or Martin."
"Okay."
"Now eat your sandwich. I didn't pull you out of school for nothing."
