As Nick releases her from the embrace, she looks in to his face and sees tiredness etched within. She reaches up and gently strokes his cheek.

"You look exhausted, why don't I drive us home."

Nick's eyes light up in amusement.

"You know how to drive?"

"Everyone knows how to drive. I just haven't done it for a while."

"And yet I'm suppose to let you behind the wheel of my BMW?"

"By the look of you, I think it would be safer in the hands of a twelve-year-old. Now are you going to let me have the keys, or we'll take a taxi back."

Nick holds his hands up in mock surrender.

"Okay okay you win."

He fishes his keys out of his pocket and places them in Jenny's open palm. He puts his arm around her and pulls her in close. He plants a kiss on her hair and whispers:

"This new bossy side of you? Is it something that I need to get used to?"

Jenny elbows him in the stomach.

"Ouch, I'll take that as a yes."

Jenny is happy to see Nick's beautiful smile, even if only fleetingly.

When they arrive back at Nick's home, Burton is asleep on the couch. Nick speaks softly.

"Dad"

Burton doesn't stir. Nick tries again, a bit louder.

"Dad"

Burton's eyes pop open.

"Oh hi Son, how's Lulu."

"The doctor says she'll be okay, she's sleeping. Caroline is with her."

"That must have gone well?"

Nick shrugs.

"How's Anne? I hope she didn't give you too much trouble."

"No, we read a couple of stories and then she was fast asleep. Do you need me in the morning?"

Nick lets out a sigh.

"I don't know. I'll take the day off, it will depend how Lulu is. I said that I would take Anne in to see her when she wakes up."

Burton stands up, he pats Nick on the arm.

"Just call if you need anything. Now get to bed, that daughter of yours will no doubt be up soon and you look dead on your feet."

"I will. Thanks Dad."

"Anytime, you know that."

"I do."

Burton leans in and whispers in Nick's ear.

"I approve of the new girlfriend, about time."

"Shhh Dad."

Burton smiles at seeing Nick turn a few shades of red."

"Good night son. Good night Jenny, it was lovely meeting you."

Jenny looks on amused as she see's Nick's embarrassment and guesses the cause. After Burton closes the door behind him, Jenny moves into Nick's arms.

"I hope he said nice things about me."

Nick smiles.

"He approves, coming from my father you can take that as a big compliment."

"I will, but there's only one person's approval I seek."

She gives him a kiss, Nick pulls her closer and it becomes sweet and lingering. Jenny pushes against him and tries to pull away. Nick pulls her in closer and whispers.

"Now where do you think you're going."

He kisses her again. She pulls away.

"To bed."

Nick gives a wicked smile.

"I'm right behind you."

Jenny laughs.

"To sleep, it's four in the morning and you have a little girl who will be waking up needing your attention."

Jenny turns to head up the stairs. Nick catches her wrist. Jenny sees pain pass across his face, he looks a little uncomfortable.

"I...I..I'm not sure I can sleep tonight."

"You have to try, but maybe I know a way of helping it along."

Relief washes across Nick's face, along with a smile.

"Now that does sound interesting."

Nick's dragged awake, by the sound of Anne crying for her mom. He jumps out of bed and throws on some sweat pants. He groans as he sees the time displayed on the alarm clock, 5:30, he's been asleep for an hour. He makes his way to Anne's room, it's still dark but opening the door bathes Anne in light from the hallway. She's tangled up in her sheets. She stops crying when the door opens, but her eyes are red and full of tears. She holds out her free arm towards Nick.

"It's all right, Daddy will help you."

He quickly frees her and before he knows it she,s on her feet and throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face against him. He wraps his arms around her and lifts her up. He sits down in the rocking chair. Anne is whimpering against his chest and he strokes her hair.

"Shhh, it's okay, Daddy's got you."

Nick closes his eyes, the lack of sleep and the stress of the entire evening has made him bone tired. He tries to shrug off the guilt of finding pleasure with Jenny while Lulu's in a hospital bed, after taking an overdose. He tries to tell himself that it's not his fault, that he's always done his best for Lulu and for Anne. But there has to be something he's missed. There must have been signs, before today, that Lulu was falling apart. Her work hasn't suffered and she still kept everything up to her high standard in her home. He mentally shakes his head, nothing comes to mind, the move to Chicago being the only indication.

Jenny is waking up and turns over to cuddle with Nick to find him gone, she's surprised by the pang of loneliness the discovery brings . She looks at the clock and it's 7:30p.m. She guesses that Anne woke up and Nick has taken her downstairs to avoiding disturbing her. She puts on Nick discarded shirt and goes out on to the landing. She expected to hear noises from downstairs but all is quiet and there's no sign of any lights. She spies that the door to Anne's room is ajar. She gently pushes it open to find Nick fast asleep in the rocking chair with Anne sleeping on his shoulder. She smiles at the sight and turns to go but his voice stops her.

"I'm not asleep."

Anne scrunches up her body as she begins to wake.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake her."

"She's been working on it for the last five minutes."

Anne has turned towards the sound of Jenny's voice, she's rubbing her eyes and blinks.

Jenny walks a little closer.

"Hi Anne."

Anne buries herself in Nick's chest, then turns her head to sneak a peek and gives Jenny a half smile.

Jenny smiles back and looks at Nick. She can see he's still very tired.

"You didn't get much sleep did you?"

Nick shrugs.

"I'll be fine after a shower."

She leans over and gives him a kiss.

"I'll go start breakfast."
