Chapter Twenty-Seven

Hey hey hey hey hey! Sorry about my crazy sugarishness, my parents made the mistake of letting me go to the mall unsupervised. They seemed to forget that said mall has a candy store! Anyway, again, I haven't updated in FOREVER but I've missed lots of school due to a class trip, and I am now bombarded with makeup work. And only 5 days before winter break! Bah humbug to you, homework! Anyway, here's the next chappieeeeee!

Rainpaw's heart was pounding so fast it felt as if it was going to burst out of her chest. As the five apprentices and their mentors returned to camp, Rainpaw could see the entire Clan gathered already. Stormstar stood on the High Branch with Amberleaf at his side. Amberleaf's amber gaze bore into the arriving group.

"The last cats have arrived, Stormstar. Everyone is ready." The tortoiseshell deputy addressed her leader.

The massive grey and white tom gave a yowl for attention.

"Cats of ShadowClan! We are gathered here on account of ThunderClan at this very moment attempting to steal the grassy clearing. They originally gave us this piece of territory as a gift, but time and time again they have gone back on their word, selfishly trying to take it back as if their needs are greater than ours. Are we going to let them have it?"

Snarls of defiance burst from the crowd, cats shouting, "Never!"

Stormstar's eyes blazed blue fire, and his tail lashed. "Very well. Today, ShadowClan will prove that we will not be pushed around. We will show those ThunderClan cats that that clearing now, and always will, be ours!"

The Clan cheered, Rainpaw joining in, excited for her first fight despite the butterflies in her stomach.

Stormstar's gaze swept across every cat in the clearing. "Alright! ThunderClan has brought almost every single warrior for this. We will have to match them; however, the camp must not be left unguarded. Specklenose, Morningbreeze, Pebblefur, Sandpaw, and Duskpaw. You six will stay and defend the camp."

"And us? We can help too, right?" Grasskit squeaked, him and Redkit jumping in excitement."

Stormstar's eyes glittered in amusement. "Of course, Grasskit. I can trust you two to defend your mother Bluefire, can't I?"

Redkit stood up straighter. "You can count on us, Stormstar!"

The clan chuckled, glad to have one last laugh before the battle.

"As for the rest of you," Amberleaf spoke now. "Stormstar and I will organize you. We can do this, everyone!"

Rainpaw slunk silently through the forest on the heels of her patrol. She took shaky breaths, trying to calm herself. She felt Leafdrop's ginger pelt pressing up against hers, and her mentor asked her, "Do you feel ready?"

Rainpaw gulped, "I feel like the frog I ate came back to life in my stomach and is hopping around inside it! And I think my legs don't feel like fighting because they've decided to turn as sturdy as flower stems."

Leafdrop gave an amused purr. "That's good, you feel normal. Everyone gets battle jitters."

Rainpaw cocked her head.

"Even Stormstar and Amberleaf?"

"Probably them most of all. They are the ones leading the clan into battle." Leafdrop reasoned.

Rainpaw nodded thoughtfully. All of a sudden, the patrol leader, Shadeclaw motioned with his tail for the group to stop.

"Now, listen carefully. Stormstar has instructed us to not all come out at once. Once the fight starts, we will use our greatest strength, the shadows of twilight, to launch an ambush. I want Paleflower, Cinderstorm, Thornfang, Quickfoot, Moonshadow, Owlpaw, and Icepaw on one side. Paleflower will lead you at my call. Volewhisker, Sootpaw, Rosefur, Leafdrop, and Rainpaw, you all will be on the other side, led by myself. Are we ready?"

There were soft murmurs of agreement from the group, and he battle patrol split up. As Icepaw brushed past Rainpaw, she whispered, "Good luck, I know you'll be great!"

Rainpaw blinked her thanks to the friendly older white apprentice who had been so kind to her.

As they crouched under a clump of ferns, Rainpaw peeked into the clearing and had to hold back a gasp of fear.

There were ThunderClan cats all over the clearing, and they were just standing there, waiting.

Rainpaw shuddered. Robinstar really must have brought almost her entire clan. The silver apprentice could spot Mosspaw, Swiftpaw, and Emberpaw from the Gathering, as well as the ThunderClan deputy, Foxclaw, who was conversing with a light brown tabby tom. From the way the two were standing, as well as their facial expressions, not to mention their similar build and matching golden eyes, Rainpaw figured they were related. Littermates, maybe?

Foxclaw looked extremely nervous, and he kept glancing worriedly over at his leader.

Robinstar herself was sitting in the middle of the clearing, her tortoiseshell tabby fur as wild as usual, and her eyes staring focused directly at the ground as if she feared it would disappear out from under her.

All of a sudden, the ThunderClan leader's too-bright green gaze shot up, staring directly into the woods where ShadowClan was hiding.

"I sense our friends have arrived," she hissed, claws curling in and out of the soil, sunlight catching on the tips. "Come out, Stormstar! Or is your clan too cowardly to fight to keep what you stole?"

Stormstar strode out confidently, eyes blazing blue flames. Amberleaf was right beside him, and behind him lined up Squirrelfoot, Mudstripe, Stonefall, Wolfleap, Pinetail, Badgerheart, Doveflight, Cloudshade, Dawnblaze, and Lilypaw.

Rainpaw looked on in worry as she saw Mudstripe pressing protectively against Lilypaw, who kept edging away from her father and staring eagerly at the leaders

"ShadowClan is never afraid to defend what belongs to us," Stormstar growled, tail lashing angrily. "However, we don't want a battle. We have many mouths to feed and it is practically leaf-bare. I will give you one more chance, Robinstar, to take your cats and leave in peace."

Robinstar looked at him for a moment, blinking her bright green gaze. Then, all of a sudden, her eyes darkened as if clouds had covered them like they did the moon.

The old tortoiseshell tabby crouched low.

"Never."

With that, she lunged straight for Stormstar, surprising Rainpaw by her sudden speed, shrieking, "ThunderClan, attack!"
