Chapter Twenty-Eight

Katherine woke up slowly as she pushed herself up from the bed, she noticed that the cool cloth that had been behind her head fell at the same time.

"You're awake, finally."

Katherine turned around and saw Stefan staring right at her, he was sitting in his chair and tapping his foot like he usually did when he was nervous. Crap, something must have happened and from what Katherine could remember it wasn't exactly a thrill.

"What the hell happened?" she rubbed the back of her skull. "I feel like someone threw a brick to the side of my head. Actually, I think that would have been less painful."

"You were ambushed." Stefan said simply. "From what I can pinpoint someone attacked you on your way to Mystic Falls, drugged you left you here and took Rebekah."

Katherine blinked confused. "They took Rebekah? Why? Where?"

"I don't know." He shook his head and it was obvious that he didn't want to talk about it. "They took Klaus as well."

"If they took Klaus of all people-"she trailed off as she rested her head against the headboard.

"Hey, we'll get them back," Stefan patted her knee as he stood up.

Katherine immediately stood up. "Where are you going?"

"Marcel, Elijah, and I are talking in the office. Or arguing. I just came to check on you."

"Wait, I'll come with you." She said as she stood up.

Stefan hesitated. "Katherine, really-"

"Stefan," Katherine repeated in the same mocking voice that she had used a hundred times. "You didn't really think I was going to just sit around and wait for news did you?"

The tension in the office was high. Stefan and Marcel were glaring at each other blaming each of other for the whole Rebekah situation and Elijah was starting to lose his cool and Katherine guessed it was because his siblings were missing, Katherine wouldn't budge from there, and the fact that Marcel and Stefan were acting like a couple of thirteen years old.

"That is enough from both of you," Elijah barked. "We are not going to get anything done if you two keep arguing about it." He started taking off his shirt and tie exposing his chest that was now tattooed with a list of names. "Katerina?"

Katherine had to blink twice to take away her gaze from his chest. "Oh, yeah?"

Elijah looked slightly amused, but it quickly disappeared. "I want you to write all the names down."

Marcel crossed his arms over his chest. "Who gave them to you?"

"Apparently, Celeste gave us a clue." Elijah explained. "If we can figure out what these names mean then it would lead us to where my siblings are. The mark is supposed to disappear after we figure out the clue."

"And if we don't?" Stefan asked, dreading the answer.

Elijah sighed. "Let's just hope it doesn't come to that." He saw that Katherine wasn't writing names anymore. "Katerina, are you all right?"

"Elijah, what are these names? Do they mean something?" Katherine hadn't bothered to face him, but she was staring at a particular name engraved near his neck.

"I suspect that these are the names of the girls that Celeste has inhabited through the years." He paused. "Why is something the matter?"

"Yeah," she said pointing to the name on his neck: Jessica Rogers. "I knew Jessica briefly when I was in New Orleans in 1933, she was a witch and I was hoping that she would be able to use some kind of spell so that Klaus couldn't find me when I was on the run. When she refused to help me, I killed her, she practically let herself be killed."

"Where did you kill her?" Stefan asked, hoping that it would lead them to an answer.

Katherine cocked her head to the side, trying to remember. "In front of a sanitarium. Fleur-de-lies sanitarium if I'm not mistaken."

The names started disappearing from Elijah's body.

"The sanitarium, that's where you'll find them." Marcel said calmly.

"You mean the one-"Stefan's voice trailed off.

Elijah narrowed his brown eyes towards them. "Marcel, Stefan you're hiding something from me, what is it?"

Stefan glared at Marcel.

Marcel sighed. "All right, but you're not going to like it."

"All this time I have wondered how our father found us," Elijah rubbed his temples. "How he could have manage to destroy the one place we could have called home."

"Elijah-"

Elijah pinned Marcel against the wall. "Rebekah, I loved her. I think I still do. But don't you see Klaus would never allow us to be together, but hey hasn't he done the same thing to you? Destroy every relationship you've had had only to end up with nothing?"

Elijah let go off Marcel.

"Stefan, you knew?" Elijah's mood instantly darkened as he looked towards the youngest Salvatore.

"I barely found out a few days ago." He admitted. "I honestly was hoping that Klaus would never find out. He can get a bit . . . murderes."

"Yes, well I will not let my sister suffer my brother's wrath when both of you are to blame." Elijah said coldly. "Both of you come with me, Marcel you will show me exactly where this sanitarium is."

"Wait," Katherine attempted to follow them. "I'm coming with you."

Elijah sighed as he looked at Stefan and Marcel. "You two go, I'll catch up with you."

Once they were alone in the room, Elijah placed both hands against Katherine's shoulders. "Katerina."

"Don't you Katerina me," Katherine slapped his hands away. "Elijah, do you really expect me to just stay here? I mean I know Klaus and Rebekah aren't exactly my favorite people, but I don't want them to be tortured by some psycho witch, do you know what Klaus will do? He will kill Rebekah."

"I understand your concern, Katerina." Elijah tried to explain. "But this is between me and my siblings."

"Then why can Marcel and Stefan go if this is so family oriented?" Katherine shot back as she crossed her arms across her chest. "Elijah, I am not some damsel in distress."

"I know you're not," he said exasperated. "But in case you forgotten in the last five minutes, you're human and pregnant with twins."

"I'm not staying here." Katherine replied stubbornly.

"I mean it, Katherine," Elijah said through gritted teeth. "I would not forgive myself, nor would Klaus ever forgive me if something happened to you. So please stay in the compound."

"Elijah-"Katherine couldn't get another word out because in the blink of an eye, Elijah was gone.
