Charlie peered at Bass over breakfast, almost like a giddy schoolgirl. They had talked into the wee hours of the morning — a first, really, for them — discussing everything from wedding vows to diaper duty.

"Okay. What gives?" Miles growled, looking at Bass and then Charlie. He felt like he was missing something.

"We're getting married," Bass replied with a cheeky grin as Charlie chimed in, "and we're having a baby."

Miles dropped his head, pushed his chair from the table and walked out without a word, passing Aaron on his way.

"What's with him?" Aaron asked, plopping down in the chair Miles had vacated. Bass and Charlie shared a look and burst out laughing. Aaron eyed them both, perplexed.

Bass found Miles with a bottle in his hand, hiding out in his office.

"Come on, man. No fair celebrating alone," Bass kidded, perching on Miles' desk.

Miles was silent for a moment before speaking.

"I got to hand it to you, Bass," he said. "You never cease to amaze me."

He took a swig before glancing at his friend, the guy he grew up with as a brother who would soon be his son-in-law and the father of his grandchild. It was almost too much to comprehend.

Miles held up the bottle as a toast.

"You will finally get the Matheson-Monroe alliance you always wanted. We will truly be family now," he said with a rueful laugh.

One of Lena's friends, a cowboy preacher named Colt Ramsey, offered to officiate the small private ceremony. Cynthia cleared one of the warehouse levels with Roark and Jenessa's help and lightly decorated it for the wedding.

Bass didn't see the point in waiting to tie the knot, especially since Charlie was obviously expectant and wanted it to be clear to all resistance fighters under her command who she belonged to.

The affair was simple. Charlie with her slightly rounded belly stood in a pale yellow flowing dress Lena had found for her next to Bass who was dressed in slacks and dress shirt he had scrounged up. Miles served as best man and Aaron as man of honor. The vows were said, silver rings Bass had managed to barter for exchanged, and a kiss to seal the deal.

All accomplished before hell broke loose.
