Chapter 28
I put the car in park and turned off the engine. I looked out onto the peaceful water. The sun was just starting to set, when I reached the rock. I took my shoes off and placed my feet in the water.
Tomorrow I would be graduation, and then I would leave for Maryland. The thought of leaving Ashley behind like that was torturing me. Everything that Sid told me, made me looked at everything again. If I left, I have no idea what would happen between Ashley and I. I can see us trying to make everything work, but then I can also see it tearing us apart.
I love Ashley more than the world, and I don't want anything to happen to her, but by leaving I would be doing exactly that. All I could do was cry.
I felt my phone vibrating in my back pocket.
"Hello?"
"Hey beautiful," I heard Ashley's angelic voice.
"Ashley, hey," I said trying to make my voice sound as normal as possible.
"Spence, is everything okay?" she asked picking up on it.
"Everything's great Ash," I lied. "So what do I owe this wonderful call to?"
"Well, I was hoping that you didn't have plans tonight…" she paused.
"Yes actually I do. You see there's this beautiful girl who asked me to dinner tonight, and you know me, I couldn't say," I said trying to be completely serious, but cracking up at the same time.
"Well, this must be one lucky girl," she said seductively.
"One very lucky girl."
"Then this lucky girl will pick you up at 7."
"I'll be waiting," I said smiling through the smile.
I pocketed my phone and stood up. I took one more glance and the sunset lit water, before heading back towards the trail. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life, I think I always have, I just need the push to find it.
I pulled into my driveway about an hour later. Both of my parents' cars were in the driveway. I took a deep breath before entering the house. My father and Glen were sitting in the living room watching the football game that was on. I entered the living room and stood in the middle trying to figure out how to start.
"Honey, is everything okay?" my dad asked, turning down the game.
"Actually I wanted to talk to you about something," I said rubbing the back of my neck.
By that time my mother had entered the room to see what was going on. I motioned for her to sit down next to my father and brother. I started to pace back and forth trying to formulate the proper words. I watched as my family's eyes followed me.
"Spence, honey, whatever it is we can help?" my dad said. I could tell that he was starting to get worried. I took one last deep breath before turning to face them.
"I don't want to go to the Academy," I said sternly.
"What? What do you mean you don't want to go?" my mother asked.
"I mean, I don't want to go to the Academy."
"I don't understand," my father said quietly.
"I'm sorry. All I've ever known is the Navy, I've never gotten to branch off. The Academy was already set for me when I was born, but what if it's not what I want."
"Spencer, our family is Navy," my mother responded.
"I know, and I know that the possibility of me withdrawing from the Academy is are low, but I want to try. You guys mean so much to me and you've done so much, but I've always dreamed of being a writer, publishing articles, interviewing famous athletes."
"And where would you go?" my dad asked.
"I emailed Boston University about my admissions, and they offered me a spot on their lacrosse team."
"Is this what you want?" my dad asked getting up and approaching me.
I felt the glare of his eyes on me, but when I looked into them they were full of sadness and worry. I nodded, and he gave me a small smile before turning away.
"I'm sorry dad. I've let you down, but it's my life to live," I said pulling him back.
"You're my little girl Spence, I'll always be proud of you."
"I'll make some calls and see what we can do, but you'll have to attend the summer training. There's no way that I can get you out of that."
"Thanks dad," I said pulling him into a tight hug. I watched him as he retreated into his study. I turned back to my mom and Glen.
"Is this what you really want?" my mother asked me.
"Yes," I said softly.
"Then there's no use in trying to convince you. UPenn will be lucky to have you," she said giving me a hug before walking out of the room.
"I thought you weren't going to make the right choice," Glen said leaning back on the couch smirking.
"I just needed a little push," I said smiling.
"I'm happy for you Spence. Are you going to tell Ashley?" he asked.
"I'm meeting her tonight, but I don't want to tell her until everything is in order, in case something goes wrong."
"You were always the smart one," he said wrapping his arms around me. "I'm proud of you Spence."
"I'm proud of you too Glen," I laughed.
We finished watching the game around six. After that I retreated to my room to get ready for my night with Ashley. I changed out of the running clothes and put on a pair of khaki shorts and a fade Nirvana tank top. I had to idea what Ashley planned for tonight so I grabbed a flannel and tied it around my waist. I was putting on a little make-up when there was a knock at me door.
"It's open," I said putting on some mascara.
My dad walked into my room carrying some papers. He took a seat on the end of my bed and waited for my to finish my make-up. I sat down next to him and looked at the papers.
"So…?"
"I talked to one of the representative, who I happened to be close with, and all you have to do is sign these papers, but since it's very late in there is no way that they can pull you out of the summer training. So, you are require to attend, but it will help you get into shape for the lacrosse season."
"I don't know how to thank you," I said taking the papers and reading them over.
"You're my baby girl. I would do anything to make you happy," he said handing me a pen.
I signed the papers. I felt like I had the huge weight lifted off my shoulders. For once, I felt happier, lighter, free. I grabbed my laptop and started to compose a letter to the coach at Boston University accepting his offer.
Ashley's POV
I finished setting up the porch in the early morning. I was planning on going on a run with Spencer, but I had to cancel because I had to finish setting up the porch and getting the food.
I took Sid with me to get the stuff for the bruschetta and strawberries. It didn't take that long to get the strawberries washed and covered in creamy white chocolate. I had to ban Sid from the kitchen because he kept trying to eat them.
It was six when I had everything ready. I dropped Sid off at Noah's house for the night and raced home to shower. My parents went back to California to finish some settlement with the record company but they were planning on making it to the graduation, so it was just Sid and I. Sid agreed to stay at Noah's so that Spencer and I could have a quiet night.
I threw on a tank top and a thin jacket before heading over to Spencer's. When I knocked on the door Glen opened it. He smiled and asked if I had everything set. I nodded and gave him a small hug.
"She's upstairs," he said motioning to her room.
I made my way up the stairs and leaned against the frame of the door. Spencer was sitting on her bed typing quickly. She was so engrossed in what she was typing that she didn't even noticed that I was there. She stopped typing for a moment and her eyes scanned over the email.
"I didn't think a screen could be that interesting," I said resting of the frame.
"Ashley," she laughed putting her hand over he heart. "When did you get here?"
"A few minutes ago. I just wanted to admire by beautiful girlfriend for a while."
"Like what you see?" she asked closing the laptop.
"Um, depends," I said wrapping my arms around her, "does it come with a kiss?"
Spencer smile, before pressing her gently lips against mine. When we pulled apart, we both broke into laughter.
"So, what have you got planned?" she asked following me out of her house.
"Well, I have a little surprise for you, but I thought that maybe we could have dinner first," I said intertwining our fingers.
"I have a surprise for you, but it will have to wait for later I guess," she said smiling back at me.
"I hope you don't mind, but I thought that we could have a night in," I said bringing her to table. I had made sure that everything was perfect before I went to get Spencer.
"Ashley, it looks wonderful," she said giving me a kiss on the lips before seating down.
"I thought I would try to make your favorite," I said pulling the bruschetta out of the oven.
"You know I love everything," she said smiling.
"Well, I happen to know that you like these a little more," I said placing a plate in front of her.
"You're amazing," she said pulling me closer to her. "I can't believe I got so lucky."
"And you're my wonder woman," I said pulling her in a kiss.
We ate of food in high spirits and laughs. Every time Spencer laughed, I left my body shiver. Her voice was so angelic that I could get lost it every time. We finished the bruschetta and cleared the table.
"That was delicious Ashley," she said patting her full stomach.
"I hope you have room in there for dessert," I laughed.
"And what would that be?" she asked seductively. I felt like my whole body could explode any minute.
"I guess you'll just have to wait and see," I said laughing. "Come here."
Spencer made her way over to me. She was so beautiful; I don't think that I could ever let her go. I wrapped my arms around her waist, and pulled her close to me. Her breath hitched when our bodies touched.
"Ash…"
"Spence…close your eyes," I said rubbing my nose against hers. She closed her eyes and I wrapped a bandana around them.
Spencer's POV
"Ash, where are you taking me?" I asked laughing as Ashley put a blindfold.
"It's a surprise," she said kissing me on the lips. I felt her wrap her arm around my waist and guide me somewhere. I felt the cool grass between my toes as we walked toward. I could see a faint hint of light through my blindfold, so we were probably somewhere with light. Ashley's arms tighten around me to stop me from moving forward. I stood there. I heard Ashley walk away for a few minutes, before she gently untied the blindfold.
"Are your eyes closed?" she asked before removing the blindfold. I nodded and I felt the blindfold drop away from my face. I kept my eyes closed until I felt Ashley's body front of mine. My eyes fluttered opened and I was meet with those beautiful chocolate eyes. She gave me her signature Davies smile, before moving so that I could see what was behind me. Ashley had set up lights that curled around some posts and along the picketed roof. She had set up her hammock between the two posts.
"I know that it's not much, but I know how much you wanted to go to prom and everything. So I thought that we could have a little prom/date of our own…" she said shoving her hands into her pocket. "Do you like it?"
"I love it," I said grabbing her by the waist and giving her a passionate kiss.
"Would you care to dance?" she asked holding out her hand. I laced out fingers as she pulled me out into the middle of the 'stage' (the middle of the roof and the grassy area). She must have press a button or something because music started to play in the background.
Ashley wrapped her arms around my waist pulling me in closer, and I wrapped my arms are her neck. We swayed to the beat of the music. I don't know how long we dance for, but if felt infinite. I never wanted this moment to end. I felt safe in Ashley's arms, like nothing could hurt me, but I could hurt her. That was what scared me the most. I shook the thought from my head and focused on Ashley smiling back at me as we dance. She was an idol of beauty. The light seemed to reflect off of her and every perfect way. The last two weeks have been the best weeks of my life. Every available moment we had we were together. Sunset on the lake, movies, lazy days, city days, anything that we could think of, but every second we were together was precious, it was never wasted. In two days I was laving Ashley, and in three she was leaving.
"Thank you Ash," I said giving her a kiss. "No one has every done anything this nice for me. It really means a lot…"
"And you mean a lot to me," she said finishing my sentence. She stopped dancing I my arms and was now staring straight into my eyes. I released my hold on her and grabbed her hand. I pulled her over the hammock. We lay down and Ashley wrapped her arms around me. Her eyes grazed up where the stars were shining against the dark sky. Her fingers gently raked through my hair.
"That first day you saw me or meet me, why did you talk to me?" she asked out of nowhere.
"Well my parents told me that there was a family moving in next door. They told me that they had a daughter about my age, so I thought that I would check it out. I noticed that someone was having trouble with some stuff aka you trying to get your bed out of the van. I thought that it was a mover, so being the Good Samaritan that I am I thought I would offer my help. And…you caught my eye." The first time that I saw Ashley was when I saw her in the moving truck. She caught my eye, what can I saw. I only saw the back of her, but that was enough for me.
"I caught your eye?" she asked skeptically.
"Oh grow up," I said punching her playfully in the arm. She was laughing hard, and I felt my lungs cave into the laughter as well.
"What about you, what did you think when you first met me?" I asked wanting her opinion, since she sort of asked for mine.
"I thought that you were the most beautiful girl that I had ever laid my eyes upon."
"I love you Ash."
"I love you more," she said pressing her lips against mine.
